Sun Rays and Sunsets over the West Maui Mountains

For only a few days, twice a year, does the sun set in the Iao Valley when viewed from Maui’s North Shore. Its that time of year right now, and although the clouds were, as usual, covering the peaks of the West Mauis, the suns rays still shone out through the gaps in the clouds,like light shining through cracks in a wall, creating a spectacular sight and beautiful light.

Basking Green Turtles near Makena in Maui, Hawaii

And then there were three.

The first time a crossed this tiny stony beach a huge boulder startled me because it began to move. It was a large green turtle calmly returning the to water. I quickly tried to dig out my little Canon Ixus camera, by which time it had virtually vanished from sight amongst the rocks and boulders in the shallow bay. About an hour later, on my return to the car I had to pass by the same little beach again, this time I looked ahead incase the green turtle had maybe returned. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were now three turtles, fast asleep, resting just above the waters edge. Trying to pass them quietly didn’t even cause them to bat an eyelid. So I slowly crouched down infront of all three – as far back as the tiny beach would allow and snapped a few pictures.. What a precious moment. Best of all was that I could walk away without having even woken them.

Puunene Sugar Mill on a cloudless Maui day

It was a wonderfully clear Maui day today. There was a gentle breeze but it wasn’t coming from the normal tradewinds direction. The West Maui Mountain horizon is usually cloudy, but todays wind direction must have blown all the clouds away. Passing by the Pu’unene sugar mill today the mountains seemed so close. So I parked in a side turning, dug out my little IXUS camera, and snapped it..

Haleakala Crater, Maui – A fine winters day

It was 50F at the summit and was t-shirt and shorts weather in the crater. One of the popular day hikes is a 12mile trail that starts at the summit (10,020ft), descends down sliding sands and goes through the crater, passing cinder cones, the silversword loop and Holua cabin and campsite at 6940ft, then it ascends up the Halemau’u trailhead also known as the switchbacks, over rainbow bridge, and ends at the carpark at 8000ft. Weather can change dramatically very quickly, so hikers are advised to prepare well.
