Black Forest Cake Candle

This is a fake Black Forest cake Candle made totally with paraffin wax.This particular cake is our family favorite and tastes good too.
Its easy to make a wax cake as it does not require a particular mold, any round metal container can be used .
The chocolate brown base was made in a round metal box , the cream is whipped wax and the red cherries are handmade red wax balls.

Chunk Candles

Chunk candles are a good way of utilizing wax chunks lying around if you make candles on a regular basis. These wax bits and pieces can be utilised for making Chunk Candles with interesting results. The only thing which has to be kept in mind is the color combination.
We can make several combinations and designs with wax chunks,will try to put up more such candles. Be innovative, make chunk candles!

Candle Display

This simple arrangement displays a floating candle surrounded with ready made roses and leaves which can be substituted with real ones.
Candle making is a wonderful experience , taking a chunk of wax and turning into a beautiful candle is an excellent way to express creativity.

T -Lite Candles

T-Lite candles are beautiful and can be used in various ways. Nowadays we can buy decorated T-Lite candles and use them for a scintillating effect. Empty T-Lites are also sold and can be filled with wax to make lovely candles.The best part is that T-Lites can be refilled and used several times.

Diya Candle

This is a reusable candle made with the repour method.First make the wax container/diya and then fill it with contrasting colored wax.
METHOD
1 Take a cupcake mold or a small bowl
2 Fill it with melted wax
3 Let it set till a layer forms
5 Pour out the wax , a hollow wax container will be formed
6 Fill the hollow wax diya with contrasting colored wax and fix the wick
7 Let it set for a few hours.
Cut the wick when the candle is ready. Decorate it with 3 D colors and enjoy !
This candle can be reused by refilling as only the inner part will melt and burn ,the outer wax container will not melt.

Decorated Candle

Rose Candles

These rose candles can be used as floating candles or otherwise and have been made in a mold. They have a burn time of about 45 minutes and are around 2 " in diameter. These are usually sold in a pack .
The advantage of using a mold is that it needs no expertise and anybody can make candles in it. Strictly not designer but very popular all the same !
We see these flower candles being sold at Diwali . The molds are costly but are a one time investment as they have a very long life.

Decorative Candle

This is a totally handmade paraffin wax creation, candle, roses, leaves and base are all made of wax .It can kept on a plate or on a candle-stand for a pleasing effect.But most often people use these as decoration pieces and hardly ever burn them !
I teach these in my candle making classes and the students love to make them in colors of their choice.

Strawberry Cupcake Candles-Tutorial

Fake food candles are pretty unique and most of the times we have to be very creative to achieve the look we want.These are strawberry cupcakes made in real pastry molds used for real cupcakes !
Here is a tutorial on how to make them.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1 Wax and additives (stearic acid )
2 Wax colors , brown for the cupcake, pink for the topping
3 Wick , prepared earlier
4 Pastry mold
5 Double boiler, spoon, wick tabs.

PROCEDURE
Heat some wax in a double boiler , mix steric acid , a bit of brown color .
Put the primed wick in the wick tab and set it in the lightly oiled mold.
Pour in the brown colored wax in the mold.
Let it set for an hour.
Heat some wax and make light pink shade , let it cool, make froth . Spoon it over the set wax , keep the wick centred.
Spoon red melted wax over it if desired.

Chunky Candle

I really had a lot of fun making this candle as there are 3 shades of chunks vertically !
Its easy to make chunky layers but making this was a challenge. I wanted colored chunks in white background so I used pink, green and blue chunks and a white wax to set them.
A medium size pillar mold was used for making this candle.

Ball Candle

This small ball candle is made in a ball mold , I have painted it with acrylic colours to make it look different.
METHOD
1 Make a ball candle using a ball mold.
2 Use rubber bands to mark segments on the ball candle.One can make as many segments as required eg two rubber bands will give four segments etc.
3 Put rubber band across the candle, the wick can be the intersecting point.
4 Paint the segments as desired, do not remove the rubber bands.
5 After the paint has dried, remove the rubber bands carefully.
The candlestand has been decorated with handmade cold porcelain flowers.

Stacked Candles

Stacked candles can be made with the help of cookie cutters.
1 Pour melted wax (check out procedure in the blog) in a deep tray or vessel.
2 Cut out various shapes when the wax is semi-hard, make a hole in the centre with a nail .
3 Leave the wax to harden , the shapes will come out easily.
4 Thread the wick through each shape , the wick can be knotted at one end .
5 Leave 1/2" wick at the top.
One can use bottle caps as cutters to make round shapes or use a knife to cut out shapes .

Painted Candles

Painted candles are unique as each one is lovingly handpainted. I have used acrylic colors to do the painting, there are special candle painting colors also available in the market.I have tried to give a new look to an old candle by painting on it.
Right now I have very little wax left at home so I am hoarding it ! Have to get supplies soon.

Easter Candles

These cute Easter candles can be made easily with the eggs available at home .
METHOD
1 Break a readymade candle , retain wick , collect wax.
2 Empty an egg by making a hole at the top pointed end.
3 Wash several times with water giving a final rinse with vinegar solution. Dry the egg shell overnite .
4 Melt the wax in a double boiler , add wax crayon for color if desired .
5 Pour the wax into the dry egg shell .Keep in a small bowl so that it doesnt topple over .
6 Insert the wick when the wax is nearly set .
7 Let the wax set for 7-8 hours .
8 Peel off the egg shell and take out the candle .
9 Level the candle by rubbing on a hot plate /pan .
10 Cut the wick , leaving 1/4 th of an inch .
Enjoy !

Dipped Candles

Any candle can be given a fresh look by using the dipping method.
Here a white candle was dipped in pink wax halfway and we got a beautiful pink and white candle !
METHOD
1 Heat desired colored wax in a container with additives.
2 Select the candle to be dipped .
3 Use tongs to hold the candle if the wick is small.
4 Dip the candle in the liquid wax , fully to give a new coat of color .
5 One can give as many coatings of wax as desired, there should be intervals between coating or the previous one would melt.

TIP- Keep the temperature of the wax coating low so that the candle does not melt in the process.
The container should be filled half-way so that the wax does not spill out when the candle is dipped.

Nowadays aroma candles or votives are a rage, they are in great demand and come in a variety of fragnances . One can find rose, vanilla, jasmine, sandal wood ,pine, coffee and many other candle aroma oils which can be used for both wax and gel candles . Aroma candles are used in spas , aromapathy treatments and to provide a pleasing ambience at home . Pillar, votives ball, floating , T-lites can all be made into aroma candles with the addition of aroma oils.
Lavender candles relieve stress and are very soothing, eucalyptus help in relieving colds ,peppermint help in aches and pains of joints . Citronella candles make great outdoor candles as they repel insects !
Aroma candles are easy to make and require only the addition of special candle scents which are available in candle making supply shops . But only a few drops of the scent should be used in a candle or it can be disasterous , too much of a good thing can be bad ! The aroma candle should have a pleasant fragnance and should not be over-powering like an incense stick.
Aroma candles are made as normal candles and the fragnance oils added at the final stage.

2 Use 1 ounce of aroma oil in 1 pound of wax at 175 degrees F or 75 degrees C .
3 Vybar or stearic acid is essential to hold the scent in the candle.
4 Mix in the aroma oil well for an even scented candle.
5 Be adventurous and make a layered candle with two complimentary scents !
6 Try to match the fragnance with the color for a classy effect, eg sandal wood candles look great in yellowish shades .
TIP- Use only special candle aroma oils as they do not contain alcohol which is inflammable and dangerous.

Painted candles

Painted candles are really great for theme parties and get-togethers. One can make or buy candles and paint flowers ,designs,messages as desired. Its also a way to refresh your candles by giving them a make-over .
Painting on candles is not as difficult as it appears .Candle painting is quite forgiving, just wipe off what you dont like. A special medium is available for candle painting but fabric/acrylic paints work fine.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1 Candle
2 Acrylic colors,paint brushes
METHOD
Take a candle,wipe it clean with a soft cloth. Think of a design ,it can be floral or abstract . Draw a design on the candle lightly with a pencil. Start filling in colors. Dont worry if there are mistakes as they can be wiped clean . Give two coats of colors if required.
Just remember to take scentless candles for painting as aromas have oils which make the surface oily and difficult to paint.
A coat or spray of varnish can be used to seal the painted design.

Mushroom Candles

Mushroom Candles are handcrafted novelty candles and add beauty and elegance to any decor.They are quite easy to make.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1 Wax , wick ,stearic acid , red , green wax color
2 Flat tray or baking tray (aluminium )
3 A round flat mold for the base
METHOD
Melt wax in a pan for the base. Pour it in the lightly oiled mold and let it set for a few hours. Unmold and keep ready .
Mushroom Stem - Melt wax in a pan , add a pinch of staeric acid, and pour it in an aluminium flat tray or plate , a steel plate will also do. Prepare wick by dipping in the melting wax.
Cut a three inch wick ready. While the wax is still rubbery and spongy to touch mark a 2 inch by 4 inch strip for the mushroom stem with a knife. Pick the strip carefully and roll the wick in it. Do not cut the excess as we need it ! This takes care of the stem.
Mushroom Head- Mix in red wax color in the left over wax and heat it, pour it in the tray. While still warm scoop up a small amount and fashion it into a cap for the mushroom stem. Make a tiny hole in the centre of the wax cap and attach it to the ready stem by threading the wick through it. If required a little bit of melted wax can be used to make it stick.The mushroom candle is ready and now the excess wick can be cut.
Base - Take the ready base and layer it with foam wax, green wax color can be added to give it a natural effect ( heat wax , let it cool , make froth with fork or whisk ) .Quickly insert the prepared mushrooms into the warm wax froth as desired .White acrylic paint can be used to dot the mushrooms if required.
TIP- Several wax stems can be prepared and kept ready, even wax mushrooms can be stored and used accordingly.

Easy Water Candle

Water Candles are really eye-catching and a great talking point . One can put any decorative piece inside the glass including plastic flowers , stones, beads, sand and even real fruits and flowers !
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1 Wax ,addiitives or a store bought candle
2 Plastic, glass , ceramic decorative pieces or even real fruits and flowers as they will not be coming in contact with the flame anyway.
3 Break a candle , save the wick or follow candle making instructions in the blog
4 Heat wax in an old pan or in a double boiler carefully
5 Select glassware , wipe clean.
6 Put in items of your choice , you can also glue them , fill 3/4 with water
7 Pour the melted wax slowly and carefully over the ENTIRE surface of water like a layer.This is very important .
8 Keep wicks ready. Push in the wicks in the semi-hard wax layer , it will cool faster as its in water !
9 Let the candle set , do not shift it.Do not try to clean any spills .
10 Clean the wax spills from the glassware if any after the candle has set.

Enjoy !
PS- The ENTIRE surface of the water has to be layered with wax so that all the items remain UNDER it and do not catch fire.

Easy Wax Diyas

Diwali is the festival of lights and earthen diyas are still very popular and readily available. Its quite exciting to see beautiful diyas in various shapes and sizes being sold in the market.Traditionally diyas are filled with oil but we can fill them with wax and have a spill-free Diwali !
PROCEDURE
Select diyas , wash and dry them . This will get rid of the dust and dirt. Now paint them in colors of your choice.One can use poster or acrylic colors.
1 If you are unable to get candlemaking material ,break a store bought candle carefully keeping the wick intact.
2 Heat the wax pieces in an old aluminium pot till wax turns liquid.
3 Pour it in the painted diyas.
4 Cut pieces of wick according to the number of the diyas.
Push in the wick when the wax is slightly set.
5 Let the wax harden.
6 Sprinkle some sparkle on it to give a festive look.
7 Enjoy !
PS - All additives are already in the store bought candle so no need to add anything ! Isnt it fun !!!!
