Since taking off on his own the prolific Olie Smith has established himself as a highly regarded talent after a string of big-hitting productions and remixes; seemingly never short of inspiration on which to base his works, this latest double E.P. looks set to be another hit.

Both tracks have taken their place on Anjunabeats Volume 7 but it’s ‘Cadence’ that has the honour of being first up on this E.P.; dreamy breakdowns, gorgeously radiant melodies and effortlessly flowing choruses mean that whilst summer may have gone for another year this one will always take you back when it gets going. Finnish superstars Super8 & Tab are back with the first release from their debut artist album and the eagerly awaited follow-up to ‘Delusion’ and last year’s smash hit ‘Elektra’. Taking its title from the Maldivian paradise of the same name, ‘Irufushi’ is yet another stormer from Miika and Janne; elements of the DNA from its predecessor are evident as its grinding groove and fleeting vocal effects drive it towards a textbook energy-building breakdown, before it bursts into life with a euphoric detonation of peak-time synths.

Next up Ashley Wallbridge checks in for the second remix, and works up a progressive-minded number full of peaks and troughs.

Launching the adrenaline levels into the stratosphere on the second remix is Sean Tyas; full-on bass, beats and a futuristic breakdown morph ‘Irufushi’ into an unrelenting, uncompromising main-roomer.

They walked down the aisle to Above & Beyond, were blessed on Anjuna Beach, then honeymooned at A&B's Sunburn Festival

Julie and Myron are a true clubland romance. Their eyes met across a crowded dance floor at Passion in Coalville in 2003 and they haven't looked back since. Both huge fans of trance dons Above & Beyond, the couple travelled all over the UK to see them in action, but never got to meet their heroes. Then, one day on the other side of the world, all that changed.

In December 2007, Julie and Myron decided to tie the knot. "We wanted to get married in Goa, but we found out we couldn't do the legal side there," explains Julie. "So we decided to fly there for a blessing afterwards." At the UK service - held in an Indian restaurant in Leicester - the pair walked back down the aisle to their favorite Above & Beyond track, 'Good For Me' before setting off for Goa, Their destination: Anjuna Beach, name-sake of A&B's label, Anjunabeats.

"As it happened, Above & Beyond were playing at Sunburn festival, which was near where we were. We met two English girls there who had won a competition to meet them." Before they knew it, Julie and Myron were whisked backstage to meet Paavoi Siljamäki and Jono Grant. "It was a perfect day, " says Julie.

Converts tend to emerge excitedly from their first Above & Beyond gig experience and ask 'was that really trance?' The answer is usually yes and no, for while Above & Beyond are proud of their role in defining the melodic trance sound and their synonymy with the quality end of the genre, trance is too small a word for what they do.

There's no clearer example of this than the success of Anjunadeep, the trio's melodic and progressive house offshoot that’s grown from being a promising sibling label to a dynamic and influential imprint in its own right, winning fans such as James Zabiela, Desyn Masiello, Eric Prydz, and Laurent Garnier along the way, and receiving a nomination for Best Record Label at DJ Mag’s Best of British Awards 2008.

It's a progression which brings us to 'Above & Beyond Anjunadeep:01', the label's debut compilation. The Anjunadeep offshoot of Anjunabeats was founded in '05, to scout the secret alleys and distant corners of progressive music and return bearing rare treasures. The label has quickly become influential and prestigious in its own right, featuring heavyweight artists like Jaytech, Boom Jinx and Maor Levi and numbering James Zabiela and Desyn Masiello among its fans. Whilst hands in the air moments are absent, there's still plenty here for trance devotees, as the A&B boys have put together a spacey, hypnotic collection, relentless in its own understated, bass-driven way, and perfect for pre-club warm-up or end of the afterparty. 4/5

Anjunadeep continue to straddle the camps of subtle trance and quality proggy house and this selection is testament to just how successfully they manage it. 16 Bit Lolitas set the tone with the ethereal chords and chunky beats of ‘Nobody Seems To Care’ and the quality doesn’t dip from thereon. Interplay’s driving ‘Room Service’, Komytea’s blissful builder ‘9’ and the anthemic bleepery of Jaytech’s ‘Sundance’ help form a set that’s warmly mellow yet highly danceable. Euphoric not cheesy, soulful not syrupy: this is fine, trance-edged house with substance that will makes you feel like the sun is shining on your face even during the bleak midwinter. 8/10

A debut compilation from Above & Beyond’s progressive house offshoot and we can clearly expect some great things from Anjunadeep in the future – much like Gabriel & Dresden, these guys have been unfairly dismissed as all-out trance merchants when all they’re really into is melody. Much deeper in style and with far fewer vocals, this would still sound fantastic in a big-room setting, with Jaytech (the man can do no wrong – check out ‘Sundance’) 16 Bit Lolitas, PROFF and Komytea adding proggy depth to some massive, euphoric synth hooks.
