Traveling in the Indian summer isn’t easy, especially when you’re stuck wearing clothes that don’t breathe. I remember wishing, for the hundredth time, that my pants had pockets—or that I had found a pair of comfortable cotton trousers that weren’t plain or boring. Polyester was out of the question. "This road feels like a mall for homestays!" said my partner, filled with mixed emotions of excitement an disappointment at Naddi, Dharamshala. We shared a silent exchange on if that was any good. It didn't take long for me to realize that some places change, to never be the same again. As a vlogger, I felt a sudden pang of guilt. Are we travelers, to blame?

Who among you, noticed the trash than the Naddi View?

Just then, I remembered feeling disappointed when we saw a large pile of trash waterfall in the morning at Mc. Leod. Take Triund trek, for instance. Beautiful views. Gazed by herds of cattle, horses, and goats on the valleys, hilltops, and meadows. While it boasts stunning views of majestic snow-covered mountains, it's disheartening to see tissue papers and plastic bags left behind on human waste, which don't decompose easily. When will we ever learn?

Can we reverse the offbeatness, please?

Are other lesser-known places going through similar changes? Should we stop playing with the offbeat lesser known places, and revive 'what we already have' instead?

During our three-month stay, we formed connections with many locals - from the juice vendor in Naddi to the hairdresser in McLeod to the organic shopkeeper in Dharamshala, and the Maggi vendor in Bal Gaon.

Before my stays in Dharamshala were brief, making it challenging to grasp the gravity of the situation amidst our quick exploration, but this time it was different.

At Balgaon Khad(Khad = Little River)

The Cons - What Locals Say?

While sustainability and greenwashing might be popular now, people in some remote areas have been practicing it for a long time. Our modern lifestyle can sometimes disrupt theirs.

Locals expressed frustration, citing instances where YouTubers promoted non-existent / not easy-to-reach offbeat locations for seconds of fame, which has posed a big hassle for the local taxis and locals alike. At a tea stall, a friend of our driver, sadly said, "Us locals have always been proud of keeping our place clean. But now, these people, don't seem to care about Dharamshala's future. Do you get it, ma'am?"

A local hairdresser in McLeod said, "For some, it may be just entertainment, but for us, it's our livelihood. The main issue is with bikers, mainly from Delhi, they leave litter everywhere and it's polluting our environment, our beauty, and our water.

Although everyone says it's safe to drink tap water during the monsoons, we found a thin layer of oil on it. When we asked around, people said the water used to be pure but isn't anymore. They don't drink directly from the tap either; they use filters or boil the water in monsoons.

It's ironic because I've visited parts of Europe where they have natural, drinkable water flowing straight from the mountains to our taps. Don't we want the same for our places?

The irony is that Dharamshala has excellent water management, collecting and purifying water from springs and rain before distributing it. Do we desire for the pristine mountain water to remain untainted? Or, do we aim to install water filters at every mountain, because we humans have gotten irresponsible, and cannot preserve what is pure?

The Pros of Development - Local Economy and Employment

Despite the concerns, there are silver linings. Homestays contribute to the local economy and foster community development. Some locals take pride in the city's growth and the employment opportunities it offers. I, as a traveler, thoroughly enjoyed how accessible Naddi has become; even Amazon was delivering here!

Locals aspire for their towns to prosper, but often, rapid unplanned urbanization leads to difficulties.

Unfortunately, we can't just rely on travelers to clean up and behave responsibly. Instead, the government could enforce a rule: anyone staying longer than a couple of days (let's say 5 days) must dedicate at least one day to a local community project. Another idea is for the government to support only accommodations like homestays, eco-stays, or resorts that focus on protecting the environment rather than just making money.

The Pros of Development - Adventure Sports and Tourism Infrastructure

Building infrastructure can create tourism opportunities like ropeways in Dharamshala, which is exciting for visitors. Plus, new adventure sports also provide jobs for locals.

But are these adventure sports always regulated? And is making remote areas more accessible with ropeways beneficial, or does it just lead to more congestion in challenging terrain?

As travelers, we often prioritize cost over safety and neglect to inquire about pilot experience. In Kangra, including Dharamshala, paragliding deaths prompted temporary ban in 2022, reminding us of the value of life. While we may overlook such incidents as old news, it's crucial to recognize how easily we risk lives.

I support safe adventure sports in India, provided they are overseen by knowledgeable and regulated professionals. While I felt secure paragliding in the well-known Bir Billing area with an acclaimed pilot, would I be willing to try the same sport in the lesser-known Intrunag in Dharamshala, unless my safety is guaranteed?

The question remains: can our efforts to preserve the environment match the rate of degradation? Alongside legitimate homestays, there's been an increase in illegal construction, resulting in water shortages, seepage, and landslides. Can these trends be reversed?

We visited the spot, and although media often exaggerates, its a reminder not to mess with nature.

Locals mentioned that only constructions closest to the overflowing khad during monsoons very effected.

Local NGOs are actively working to promote sustainability and clean up the ecosystem. Yet, can short-term volunteer efforts undo years of neglect? Can our short stays in a homestay or eco-friendly resort for a few days help preserve a place or should we now opt for slow travel with mindfulness?

Traveling responsibly isn't always easy. While I advocate for taking it slow, how many of us can spend our short vacations giving back to the places we visit? That's why many opt for quick trips without much thought.

It's tough to balance idealism with reality. If we had more time off we could volunteer or if everyone approached travel like bloggers, maybe things would be different. But for now, many might skip opportunities to help out in favor of ticking places off their lists.

Lots of folks might skip things like cleaning up trash or helping the environment because they're focused on quickly seeing new places. Short vacations and limited time off make it tough to prioritize responsible travel. After all, not everyone can afford to take it slow, right?

Guys, finding a swimsuit in Dharamshala is a challenge, we found it at a kirana store in Dharamshala main market that mainly sold academic items. He said to me, mam Dharamshala me hum swimming costume use ni karte, we jump like that only in our rivers and our khads.

While Airbnb offers a convenient list, it's often smarter to explore on your own in hill stations. You might stumble upon homes that are nearly one-third the cost of those listed on these sites. We chose homestays in Naddi, which was pleasant, but looking back, renting might have been a wiser financial decision.

The Need to Deinfluence Travel and Why? Do you know?

Drones flying high in mountain areas pose a threat to the delicate ecosystem of birds and disturb the circadian rhythms of mountain dwellers who wake up and sleep early. Before you call me a hypocrite for using drones while criticizing their effects, I wonder if we, as content creators, are disrupting peace.

A simple solution could be to create a repository of drone shots that all bloggers can use. USA for example, has banned the usage of drones in their national parks.

Travel is my bread and butter, but lately, I've been thinking: why can't travel bloggers stay in one place for a while and help restore it? We could bring in brands, collaborations, and funds for a higher purpose and relish the sustainable goals UN has set into fruition making each place we visit a better place to be at.

Those little nudges in my head, reminding me to smell the roses before they wilt, suddenly made sense. As travel bloggers, they say our greatest passion is to explore. Life might take a backseat, but our wanderlust and desire to share beautiful content with the world never wanes. In the past three years, I've been asked countless times: What's going on? Where did I disappear to?

Shifting Focus beyond Screens to Embrace Life's rawness in Himachal

Some have even joked they can't imagine me doing anything else. Yet, I've struggled to find a balance between settling down and continuing to wander, feeling like I have no roots or a place to call home, and I must!

In a time when packing bags is the norm for many vloggers, I've found myself taking things a bit slower. Sure, some may argue that taking a three-year break had put us behind in the competitive world of travel blogging, where everyone seems to be always on the go and living their best life. But for me, it was about finding what felt right.

Excitement and Connections

Today, I'd love to share why life is more than just travel—it's a beautiful part of it, but not the whole picture. While exploring new places can be magical, nothing compares to the warmth and comfort of loved ones back home. I've admittedly brushed aside this truth a few times, but both before and after Covid, reality has gently nudged me back to it.

Life Can Be Hard

Contrary to what others might think, I can't center my whole life around travel alone. Over the past three years, I've faced tough losses—from the passing of my father to setbacks in my relationship, fertility struggles/losses, and four bouts of Covid. With all these challenges, I've realized that while travel is something I enjoy, I'm still searching for whether it's my ultimate passion amidst everything else going on. Life can be hard sometimes, and we have to choose.

What Drives Me Now...

However, I haven't stopped traveling altogether, though I'm not always driven to document every moment on vlogs or social media. Why, you might wonder?

Mainly because I'm disheartened by the excessive exploitation of every corner of the globe in the name of exploration. It leaves me questioning whether future generations will have any sense of wonder left, as our relentless pursuit of new experiences risks exhausting the charm and curiosity of these places.

Dreams may be limitless, but places have their limits too.

2021 was the last time I used my camera. Isn't travel supposed to be lightweight anyways?

The past three years also have been a tough journey filled with pain and loss, but they've also pushed me to seek deeper fulfillment beyond quick bursts of happiness. While I might love the idea of visiting 30 countries in a year, I also have to consider how much time I'd have left for my family and friends, who are integral parts of my life.

Lessons from Covid

Covid taught me that while travel can be exciting, it comes with challenges. For instance, think about the spouses of Merchant Navy officers—they might enjoy the constant travel, but it's still a job and can be draining.

Back in 2020, we all remember the height of Covid when hospitals were overwhelmed. I was living in New York, one of the first places in the USA to detect the virus. In December 2020, I attended the Global Travel Fair in New York and came back very sick. At that time, Covid tests were rare and only done in emergencies. My husband caught the virus from me, and we both had a 104-degree fever, a bad cough, and extreme weakness for over a month. It took a heavy toll on me, forcing me to cancel all my modeling assignments for the next two months because I couldn’t walk a mile without struggling to breathe.

After recovering, I traveled from New Jersey to New York for a modeling assignment. Despite wearing a mask, I had breathing difficulties after a woman next to me coughed badly. The clinic doctor in PPE advised a chest x-ray if symptoms persisted, as only severe Covid cases were being tested. The symptoms subsided with self-medication. That’s when I paused taking risks with my life knowing that my immunity has taken a backseat.

That same year, my father passed away in India due to medical neglect post lung disease. The rest of 2020 was spent grieving his loss and helping my family recover.

Realizations in Leh

The following year in 2021, we traveled to Leh as soon as flights no longer required Covid tests, but the crowded plane was overwhelming. We stayed for two weeks and enjoyed visiting apple orchards and flower beds, staying in homestays with home-cooked food, soaking in hot springs, and my partner's cycling excursions. Despite these pleasant experiences, we both ended up with an infection and had to be on steroids for almost a month.

It was then I realized I was stretching myself a little too much. It felt like my body was telling me to stop. Travel was an escape I enjoyed, but it could never make me whole.

Seeking Healing

I needed time to heal and to let go of life's adversities. I went through intense fertility treatments(IVF), which unfortunately failed twice. That same year, I took on written assignments with tourism boards and brands, but my heart wasn’t fully in it. I needed to find emotional renewal after such distress, and that's something you can't achieve in front of a camera.

After that, everyone recommended we try Ayurvedic treatment, specifically Panchakarma. If you think it's all about spa treatments and massages, you're mistaken—that's just a small part of it. Real Ayurveda is tough, but when done properly, it can lead to a new you. However, the benefits don't happen immediately; they come after a month of recovery.

We stayed in Udupi for over a month. A friend showed us around the coast and temples, and we underwent Ayurvedic treatment. We played volleyball with newfound friends, shared cultural exchanges, and had lots of laughs.

Unfortunately, it backfired (yes, Ayurvedic treatments can have side effects no one warns you about). For the first time since my teens, my face broke out with pus and pimples, and it took me several months to recover.

Embracing Slow Travel

After that, we spent three months in Himachal, mostly in Dharamshala and Bir, and enjoyed countless simple, everyday experiences. We talked with locals, took walks, watched clouds drift by, strolled through mustard fields with views of the snow-covered Dhauladar, cycled in Bir, tried bhang with taxi drivers on Shivratri, picked rhododendron flowers, watched corn being harvested and dried, and just breathed and lived.

Living in different places for short periods made me recognize the importance of stability in each new "home" I temporarily settled in. Basics like access to groceries, friendship circles, healthcare, electricity, internet, and reliable utilities are crucial for a sense of stability. While this setup can be enriching, it can also present challenges. Our urban lifestyles often shield us from the day-to-day struggles, but smaller locales come with their own set of obstacles.

Living amidst the stunning sunsets in the mountains or the breathtaking snowy landscapes was initially exhilarating. However, with time, the novelty wore off. While we continued to appreciate these natural wonders, my partner began to feel bored after three months. He started craving change and missing home.

He no longer enjoyed the bus rides (45 minutes downhill) to the Dharamshala market for groceries, nor did he like being stuck indoors during the monsoon season.

Wherever I've stayed for an extended period, I've faced this recurring challenge: turning it into my home. When I do establish a place as my home, I expect it to have all the comforts and necessities right from the start, which can often be a financial investment. However, despite these challenges, the idea of having a permanent home in Dharamshala, where we could have our belongings and establish a sense of stability, still holds appeal for us.

This slow travel also made me realize how locals are starting to resent influencers—they see the environmental harm even as the economy gets a boost. I wonder why no one talks about de-influencing fast travel!

Holistic Healing in Coimbatore

After that, we went to Coimbatore for another Ayurvedic treatment, which pleasantly surprised me and opened doors to holistic spiritual healing. It was also enjoyable because the doctor was a friend's sister, and we had a great time both at the institute and outside, traveling together with their family.

Returning to Stability

Twelve years ago, I quit my job to embrace the unknown of travel. However, I found myself missing the financial stability it provided. I started working as a video anchor(journalist) for a local media channel, covering food, women entrepreneurs, and now animals.

After a year of hard work, I learned to appreciate the small things in life, like gardening, waking up with purpose, healing my body, and talking to locals every day. Yet, this job doesn't compare to my first love: travel.

It's frustratingly busy, leaving little room for my travel blogging endeavors to flourish. With only Sundays off and field work filling up the rest of my week, I often find myself using that time to rest, despite wanting to invest more of my imagination into travel blogging and vlogging. I occasionally find myself reminiscing about my IT career. Although the work was monotonous, it allowed me ample time for other activities, and the pay was good.

The essence of travel is undeniably alluring and addictive. Who wouldn't crave a life filled with endless adventures, meeting new people, and exploring new paths every week? However, life encompasses more than just travel.

Balance Amongst Complexities

I once tried to prioritize travel above all else, setting aside my other life goals. Yet, I came to realize that true happiness and contentment lie in finding a balance—a pace of travel that doesn't consume my entire life. I still aspire to nurture my marital life and pursue reasonable goals like having a place to call home, and I wouldn't trade those aspirations for anything.

Now I grasp the complexities of life. When my father passed away while we were living in the US, I couldn't be here in India, due to travel restrictions amidst the extreme Covid situation. It took me months to overcome the regret. I always longed to start a family of my own, but constant instability made it challenging to settle down and pursue parenthood.

By the time we were ready to root ourselves and undergo painful procedures, the obstacles seemed insurmountable. I initially believed that travel could fill the void left by these losses, but now I understand that hurried travel only provides temporary excitement.

Instead, deep, slow travel—immersing oneself in a place for months—has the power to heal. While it may be financially burdensome and challenging to take leave from a job, such travel doesn't negatively impact the places we visit and prevents us from becoming emotionally drained.

Certainly, adoption is an option, but it requires a deep sense of stability for the child we bring into our lives. Even if we decide to remain child-free, any long-term relationship eventually needs a sense of security—whether it’s a stable home, financial reliability, a companion we can enjoy life with or a family who can need us. While I've enjoyed solo travel, I've discovered that I gravitate towards people who make journeys more interesting and fun. It's about not simply accepting things as they are. Am I wrong somewhere?

This realization has shown me that both can coexist. I've found balance in my life by caring for my mother, and she, in turn, cares for me. Spending time with my three newborn nieces has brought moments of joy and hope, helping me heal from past losses that also strained my relationship.

Honestly, there are times when I wish I could fly off like I did ten years ago, with reckless abandon and endless wonder.

However, my heart now finds fulfillment in a life that extends beyond travel. I've come to understand that I am not someone who can find happiness in lavish hotels for a day or two or be content with a few drone shots, merely appreciating a view. Instead, I prefer to save and embrace stillness.

Perhaps being a nomad isn't suitable for everyone. Maybe in my 30's, I had different stories to share. I would rather be a traveler who has truly lived.

Finding a New Perspective

The universe has put me in the backseat for a reason. I began to see life differently, realizing that "you only live once - zindagi na milegi dobara" doesn't mean constantly chasing excitement. Instead, it means truly living and not missing out on life, at any given point in life.

Don't worry, my dear readers. Let's not feel disheartened. As Indians, we're already on the move constantly, breaking out of our comfort zones without anyone's urging. The real challenge lies not in exploring the external world, but in delving deep within ourselves and making the changes the world truly needs from us.

Traveling isn't something to be frowned upon. Yet, there are times when all we crave is the comfort and familiarity of being with our loved ones, cherishing the simple moments together. Remember how, after their adventurous trip to Spain, the "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" friends returned to Mumbai to revel in the joy of togetherness!

Certainly, when we are young, rebellion often defines us. Yet, as time passes, we evolve beyond it. We begin to see ourselves and others as flawed beings. With age comes a heightened awareness of life's complexities.

When faced with a breakup, traveling offers solace—a breath of fresh air, a change of scenery that heals. However, as we age, life's decisions become more daunting. Questions about stability, finances, healthcare, and familial responsibilities weigh heavily, often influenced by our desire to travel.

“When the Motorbikes vroom and race on the twisty curvy roads along the Hawk’s Nest Scenic Byway that got popular as was featured in BMW Commercials, Porsche Ad, Dr. Strange Marvel Movie Lamborghini Scene and a few others, it hugs parallelly the Hawk’s nest winding cliff on one side and a two-foot thick stone wall hundreds of feet above the Delaware River on the other..... The lush greenery, the Spring flowers, and the plethora of Waterfalls in the region make it an interesting place to visit along Route 97."

I paused myself for a minute at the overlook parking sites, to look down at the quaint river that had river rafters paddling down, the lush greenery surrounding the region, and the marvel of watching rush in the eyes of the Bikers.

The region is a beautiful mix of slow and fast intertwined together in the universal randomness of being. This snake road with twists and turns lasts for a very short while though. But there’s still plenty to do! ”

Raymondskills Falls, Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area: This is an easy peasy trail of 0.4 miles from the parking lot. It is more like a walk on the wooden boardwalk steps than the hike. And anyone will be able to do it. The waterfall along the cliff is amazing!

On our way out, we can check the off-road path to the bottom of the fall where people swim. We did not go there as that was blocked due to broken trees. We didn’t do it but it is suggested online.

Shohola Falls, Poconos: Just 20 min drive from Raymondskills Falls is Shohola Falls. This is a 0.6-mile loop from the parking lot. The trail begins with marked steps cutting across the woods and thereafter you can follow the path along the meadow to the waterfall lookout. When we went, the path wasn’t a proper trial and hence was slippery at times. We however found that Fishermen were having a great time at the lookout. When we started chatting with them, they showed us how fishes were jumping beneath the waterfall.

A few people on the internet have suggested that we go to the other side of the bridge, take Brooks Rd and park at the end of the road. Fairly big parking lot, a short walk from there will get you to the view you want to see. But we never did that, and never knew about it as there was no network in the region when we had arrived. There are plenty of other sites and marking trails in the Poconos, that one can also explore during their visit to Port Javis.

Riverside Creamery: We did not go to this Creamery during our visit. But I thought it was worth mentioning here, as people have talked about delicious ice cream with a great view. Some flavors mentioned online is Vanilla icecream with Raspberry Sauce, Deep fried ice cream, Panda paw Sundae, etc.

Roebling Aqueduct Bridge: Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct, also known as the Roebling Bridge, is the oldest existing wire suspension bridge in the United States.

Park Avenue Observatory: The observatory is on Rt 42 just before existing Port Javis.

Fox n Hare Brewing Company: We haven’t been there but it's known for great brewery along the charming street for beer and burgers.

"Finger Lakes is a land of surprises of cuisines and beverages, and it always makes my stomach eat and drink at its heart's most whole. Before visiting this wonderland of deliciousness, I never knew Icecream flights existed. I never knew that Stout Beer with Hebenaro Chocolate tasted so good. I could still reminisce about the different varieties of Cheese in a refurbished old barn as part of the Cheese trail. And oh! How can we forget the award-winning Grape Pies from Naples, NY? Must I tell you, if you aren't a foodie, you still have plenty to do - for example, how about witnessing White deers!

F.L.X Winery, Dundee

Featuring an array of exciting menu items, including Deep Fried Almond Joy and Crunchy Fried Nutella, this casual yet delectable burger joint is one of the best. I love how friendly the ambiance and the staff were. It could easily pass as an old-school reunion joint with a sweet touch of savory and eclectic touch of fun and experimentation. The banner there read "Deliciousness is here - Best burgers in Murcia," which holds to each word.

They served us plenty of good food, such as a burger with Chicken patty, Fried eggs, Kimchi, and Miso and Cilantro. Another one had homemade sausage, chipotle meal, fried onion, and cheese crusts.

As our driver drove from F.L.X Winery to Spotted Duck - an ice cream place, he pointed us towards a haunted home in Finger Lake that came in between.

Spotted Duck Creamery, Penn Yan

Located in Penn Yan, which is famous for Buckwheat and local flavors, Spotted Duck Creamery is one of its kind, as it uses original Duck eggs for its frozen custard.

Churning ice cream is a Hoover family tradition. Daniel and his wife Elizabeth grew up on organic farms, so local and organic ingredients were a must. They started their flocks of ducks, and we can spend some time with them, watching them or feeding them from outside the grills.

They said to us, "Duck eggs make creamier and tastier ice cream. It takes about 15 min to churn. We churn it right on the sidewalk of our store. The churn equipment is an old-style retrofitted Ice and Salt churn. These are three foil, and inside is food-grade antifreeze so that our ice cream canister sets right down to it. "

Of course, it's a must-stop with a flight of gourmet ice-creams. Some of the flavors that stuck to my mind were Super Stout, Dairy-Free Candied Coconut, Elderberry Port Reserve, etc.

Muranda Cheese Company. A little detour from the usual fare, is Muranda Cheese Company. An old establishment in the area, this barn is surrounded by their own farm. They have quick cheese tastings in which they do make you taste different varieties of cheese. I would say, my experience neither was too good nor too bad, but it left me wanting for more. This place would make a perfect venue for a farm style wedding.

Some of the notable variants of Cheese that we tasted were - Red Buddy Cheese(Crunchy Cheese), Bel Celio(to be used in pasta sauce), Gotcha Gouda(that pairs with Cider), Dilli Girl(cheese with dill and garlic), Muranda Blue(to use it as seasoning on salads), etc.

If you have time, do not forget to visit other places in the area. For example, Seneca Lake State Park has a finger lakes visitor center, and also has an iconic IloveFingerLakes billboard. One can also enjoy a pleasant stroll in and around the state park. The Army Depot White Deer has white deers, so one can visit their tours as well.

Finger Lakes Wines : Inside the Winemaking Process and Wine Tasting

"We want our wines balanced. I believe that each wine here should reflect the fruit. We certainly have to do some things while making the wine but we want our Chardonnay to taste like Chardonnay and not like the Oak Barrels, " says Gene Pierce the owner of Glenora Wine Cellars in Finger Lakes.

Today as we reflect upon the dynamic scene of Finger Lake's Wine & Beer trail, we learn how wine is made, stored, and bottled at our first stop at Glenora Wine Cellars located at the South Side of Seneca Lake.

Glenora Vineyard: Overlooking the Seneca Lake, Glenora Vineyard is a picturesque Vineyard located in the Finger Lakes. As we walked into the Vineyard, we even saw Green lush grapes on the Vines.

September must be the ideal month to come here, for the weather was pleasant and our mood was jubilant. Truth be told, the ideal time to take pictures would be now when the sampling hasn't started yet. Because once the tours and the sampling starts, we get so engrossed in the practicality of knowing what goes behind the scenes, that often we forget taking pictures.

Wine Making Process

Gene tells us, " We make 800 wines per acre. That's about 4000 tonnes of wine per acre. And we have got about 10 pounds of grape per Vine. And that 10 pounds of grape would take roughly four bottles of wine. The concentrated wines, such as Icewines, make roughly one bottle of wine per vine."

Pressing

Pointing towards the two tin pressing barrels in our back, he says, "The winemaking process starts with the pressing operation. Think of these barrels as the tin can laying on the side with a whole bunch of tiny holes in it. Inside the tin can is a balloon bladder. So we pour the grapes inside the Tin can, and then we inflate the balloon. The inflation results in gently pressing the grapes from all sides, and the juice comes out through the holes. We apply gentle pressure on the grapes is because we don't want to break the seeds. The grape juice then flows into catching trays and is pumped into the tanks in the winery. "

There is one exception to the rule, however. The red pigment from the red wines, just like apples, comes from mainly the skin than from the flesh. Hence, they add the yeast and let it ferment in the heat so that pigments and the juice break down.

Fermentation

As we walked inside the production chambers, tons of barrels awaited us. They use these barrels for fermentation and aging of varieties of wines such as the Chardonnay and the Pinot Blanc.

Wine Tasting

We were having the wine sample of Cabernet Franc - one of the most popular red wine varietal from here. Cabernet Francs is a full-bodied, rich red wine with a lingering finish and gentle tannins.

As we sipped onto our samples, they told us that the barrels we saw were mainly French and American oak barrels. They were marked in red for red wines and white for white wines for ferment individually.

The Cabernet Francs that we had was a 2016 wine. One of the staff at the venue recalls that it was a hot year and a fantastic year for red wines. It was our California year, he says. What made people a little nervous was that year had a little bit of drought, but we weren't affected that much because the wines here are dependent on Vineyard Size.

One of the staff explains, " You see, Wines have roots that grow deep in the ground. So when you have wine that has lots of soil, then the wine has deeper reservoir water. In that case, the wines can survive a few weeks without water because the wine is set 6-7 feet under the soil to keep it going. Whereas if one has wines growing in shallow soil, the wines would run out of the water after a couple of weeks and be stressed out. All in all, it was a bit of a challenging year, but it worked for us. "

Gene continues, "Because there are actual pores, it enhances the speed of the aging process and picks up some flavors from the oak."

Sparkling Wine | Yeast, and More...

After we looked inside the vaults of the barrels, we walked into the next stage, where we had yeast going on for sparkling wines, which we were lucky enough to see. They offered us samples of Sparkling wine.

The demand for Sparkling wines is enormous, and Glenora was one of the early ones(since the 1880s) to make Sparkling Wines made out of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. The yeast that we saw gets shifted to another tank where sugar is added and capped. After it has consumed the Chardonnay in 6-9 weeks, the yeast that has no sugar left starts to become dormant and begins to settle and break down. The longer you have yeast, the stronger the flavors get. There'll then be extended yeast in it. As the yeast comes up, fruit diminishes, and the drink becomes more on the yeasty side. What we were having was on yeast for three years, i.e., 2015.

The Egg Shaped Concrete Cask Fermentation Process

Concrete gives creaminess to the wine without the woody flavors. Wines have a lot of acidities, and it leaches onto the calcium that causes a reaction. There is a movement known as Biodynamics going on inside.

The Egg-Shape cask also serves a purpose. The designs of barrels are such that the shape and the material help in further fermentation. The wines are fermented at the bottom of the concrete casks and raise the air upwards and heat everything. When people stir it, it gives flavor and body to the wine.

Another variety of wines that they carry are the ice-wines. We were lucky to be served Ice-wines on the porch of an inside restaurant that had a great view.

Gene says, "During winters, the water inside the grape freezes whereas the fresh hasn't. Since it's a bit more solid, it does not freeze. We pick the grapes by hand from Dec to Feb. After we pick them, we directly send them to the press. The juice that hasn't frozen comes out in the press, hence it a real concentration of fruit flavors and the juice, and then you ferment it. That is why these wines are sweeter, more intense, more fruit".

In the end, Gene and I took a stroll into the Vineyard. Our visit to the Vineyard did end on a sweet note of fresh air, hanging grapes, a view of the mighty Seneca Lake, and Great Wines. What else could we want more..!

Did you know? Penn Yan in Finger Lakes is also known for its Buckwheat. So, it's easy to go gluten-free in Finger Lakes.

The farm owner says, "I was once working at Cornell. After I quit Cornell, I joined the farm. We have some 20 varieties of food, regional items, and two units of cider donuts here. If you look outside the window, you may see the little farm stand from the original sales in 1995".

Fruit Picking - Apples & Peaches

He continues, "Apple picking is standard, whereas peach picking does not happen everywhere. Here, U-pick for peaches occurs twice a year. The difference between Apples and Peaches is that the Apples grow narrow and tall, whereas the peaches grow flat."

He further continues, " Most travelers aren't big pickers but usually locals who come here every weekend. We also get about 1000s of children from school every year. We also get many international folks as Corning incorporates fruit picking as a team-building activity. It was one day that we got people from 27 countries." He felt proud as he says so, his face beaming with a sense of achievement.

Talking of some of the struggles of keeping Apple Farm, he says, "The Deers get on the farm, and there are also Bears around here. So, their families and friends watch around it. Lots of these trees have tree guards on; we sometimes even paint them in white."

Farm Produce - Food & Wine on Table

He continues, " In Geneva, F.L.X Table is an award-winning restaurant awarded by US8 - Best Winery Restaurant. There, we have a fixed menu by the chef and all the options of wine. You can pick wines according to the taste that resonates with the palette, whether sweet, dry, or country style. We also serve wines from the private collection because we are doing food and wine together; you can leave the cork in the bottle as the wine gets exposed to oxygen otherwise.

In Geneva, we also have an open tasting room of wines. We also sell local wine flour (Flour made from Grape Seeds); we make our butter, honey, and oils out of Squash seeds, Hemp Seeds, etc. "

Local Winery

"We also have a local winery called Element Winery. It started in 2009, and within a year, we became famous for red wines. There, we let our grapes express themselves without doing much into it. The only exception to it is that we remove the imperfect or damaged berries during the harvest because that would change the smell and the taste. And they are stored in steel bottles. We wanted to create a benchmark for finger lakes wine.", he said. "

After we had a tasty lunch at the Apple Farm, we headed to the Farm Sanctuary.

Farm Sanctuary

If you are an animal lover, you'd love to come here. Even if you aren't an animal lover, the visit to the farm sanctuary will open your eyes to the realities of these animals and bring awareness to why we must opt for plant-based food over meat because that would save the animal.

When we think of barns, we think of red barns, rolling pastures, and plenty of animals, similar to what we had in the Sanctuary. Here the Sanctuary stood for something more - its role was to protect farm animals, rescue them, and aspire to changes in how society treats farm animals.

Our Sweet volunteer from the Farm Sanctuary Says, "Today, when we meet our animals, you will see they are no different than our dogs and cats. Most animals raised for meat, dairy, and eggs, spend their lives on large-scale operations with thousands of other animals. Most are packed into cages, pens, and warehouses as tightly as possible to maximize profit. To your right, you will see examples of extreme confinement."

Pointing towards a few cages ahead of us, she says, "See the battery cage for hens used in egg production. Look at this gestation cage for pregnant pigs; Look beyond the words on our eggs package - cage-free and free-range. They are merely deception.

Animals are so tightly confined that they don't have enough space to turn around and even lie down. And many of the animals are raised this way, not going outdoors their entire lives. Unfortunately, 99% of animals in America are raised this way."

What more did we see?

Like humans, animals also carry bacteria. We were told hence to wash our hands before we entered the Sanctuary. No food was allowed with us because we had to remember we were guests around the animal's home. We were also told some of these Animals might be shy because of the abuse they have gone through.

Before they were rescued, some of these animals were trapped inside with no access to clean water and food. They were so scared on their arrival here that they would not leave the Barn because they hadn't seen sunlight before. And now, many of them are super friendly, super affectionate, and spend all their time together. A little love can heal. And this is a perfect example.

A sense of calmness was bestowed upon on, along with many moments of "Awws." We rarely get to see these moments so up close in our city life. Our first stop was a cow pasture. Our volunteer told us, "Sometimes when we go on these tours, we find 2-hour-old babies. Here, Today a lot of them are over 15. These guys appreciate their time here."

We then played with the Turkey and The Sheep in their Barn. The next Barn we went to was the Pig Barn. I often thought, "Why are Pigs labeled as food. More importantly, why are pigs seen as dirty/ugly but not cute". That changed when I saw the movie "Babe," the story of a pig raised as livestock.

Our volunteer continues, "Just like Dogs, they always pee away from home. Pigs sleep 18 hours every single day. Pigs are used to produce more Pigs in the breeding cells, and the cell crate is so small that they can't even turn. Because they are so intelligent, they start picking up on Erratic Behaviors such as Biting on Bars."

Pointing to Mia, who was rescued, she says," The time she gave birth, the crate was so small she can't even turn to see her piglet. Three weeks or 21 days after they were taken away from their mothers. After that, they go through terrible mutilations - having their eyes taken out, their teeth chipped, their tails chopped. Look at Mia; she does not have a tail. "

"The mother pig will then be forcibly impregnated by artificial insemination and returned to the gestation cage until the cycle continues until her body is so worn out she can't hold a pregnancy, then she is sent to be slaughtered. ", says she.

Then why do we eat them?

Even though livestock is the primary source of energy waste, water degradation, and many free-range gases in the entire world, we believe that we may need Protein and Calcium found in them.

Humans are the only animals to have milk from another species. Protein is found in every single food we eat. They no longer recommend Diary as a source of Calcium to us as it increases the risk of Cancer. But we still take it, perhaps because we are brainwashed into it.

Why aren't any charges against offenders?

These are very normal practices in the industry, and hence there are very few laws to protect the animals. And that was the reason farm sanctuary was started to educate the public - What we eat comes at the cost of the lives of animals who deserve to be loved. And that's a solid message to deliver.

Half A Day in Watkins Glen State Park for Nature Lovers

"Rated as 3rd best State Park in all of US, the 19-tiered waterfalls at Watkins Glen Gorge Trail is a marvel to watch. Whether it was walking behind the waterfalls at the Cavern Cascade or passing through Tunnels, or learning about the mills used here to churn grains or hear about stories of rappelling down, this gateway falls near Corning is a great summer pause, especially for the lovers of hikes. No wonder the park draws about a million people per month between May to October. "

When we went, a heavy downpour greeted us, and the waterfalls went savage. We were wet yet excited in our ponchos as it was a rare beauty to watch.

One of the previous visitors to the park said..."Oh, I have been to Watkins Glen Concert during Woodstock as a teenager, and it was astounding!"

Is it open in Winters? Why and Why not?

The Gorge Trail is the biggest in the park, and it closes in early November as soon as it starts to freeze. They had to close it because it becomes hazardous. The park reopens after they repel down and try to find and remove every obstruction possible.

Trail Summery

The entrance to the park is unlike any I have seen. Nestled in the middle of the town, this makes for a quick stop while traveling to other places in Finger Lakes. The main entrance is on NY-12 in downtown Watkins Glen on Franklin Street. There are two more entrances to the park. It takes 2 hours to do the hike, with intermediate stops to take pictures in between.

Our visit to State Park began with a visit to the Information Desk first. Before the trail to the hike begins, we see a few trickles and an information board containing details on the Mills that were once there.

As we proceed further towards the Gorge Trail, we hear the roar of the falls. People say this year ( 2018) the falls aren't in full force due to less rainfall.

The Gorge Trail is beautiful, as it provides one of the best views of Cascades and Waterfalls along with potholes that are formed by swiftly moving water in the gorge. And as we proceeded from the Entrance tunnel to the Sentry bridge from where you can view the first waterfall, our tour guide pointed us towards a rock underneath where they used to take Vintage photographs in the yesteryears.

The trail is pretty narrow at the gorge, and high stone walls surround the steps, and the hike is mainly in the shade. For me, my favorite part of the hike was Cavern Cascade, as it gave me a chance to touch and feel the waterfall from behind the waterfall. For many people, the favorite is the Rainbow Waterfall, but we did not hike till that far as it was pouring heavily, and we were allowed only to go a certain distance. There is an Indian Trail at the end that also passes through the cemetery in the middle.

Hiking the Glen during COVID-19

I haven’t been to the Glen myself during COVID-19, but from resources and reviews online, I can say:

Don’t forget your mask. It's a popular trail in the area and can get crowded.
Go early on a weekday.
Stop at the information center at the main entrance to get a map of the trail. There are restrooms in the information center.
During COVID, you can only do one way. i.e, start at Gorge Trail and end at Indian Trail or vice versa.
Wear good shoes. When we went, It was raining and the path was somewhat slippery at places.

Is the hike doable?

The hike in the park is rated as moderate with a 500-foot elevation change. A few things to note about the hike is:

I believe anyone with the average physical condition will be able to do it this well-maintained hiking path. It is a mix of stone steps (800) and some flat surfaces. I have seen old people do it by stopping and pausing midway. Kids are also able to do it.
There are no dogs allowed on the Gorge Trail and people have ranted online that the rim trail also isn’t very dog friendly. Hence, keep your dogs at home.

Is it open in Winters? Why and Why not...

The Watkins were the first owners of the area and their original purchase was of 300,000 acres. It is a small park and was run as a private resort until 1906.

Native Americans and Watkins Glen

In the past, it was once that the country had taken sides with the British army (Britons). It was then that the government didn't have any money to pay the soldiers, and not only did they draw the Native Americans out, but they also gave out these lands. As a result, some of the soldiers got rewarded in lands. Our guide says, "They paid some of my relatives in lands. "

Henry teeter was the first caretaker of the park. Tourism started in Watkins Glen in the year 1863. The Native Americans always knew about this site as they lived further north and would come down during the summer to fish. There's also a trail on the top part of the gorge called the Indian Trail.

Why are Mills in Gorges?

Our guide continues, "All of our Gorges here have mills in them as they were easy places to make dams to direct water for power and sawmills. At that time, we were growing a lot of grain here, and we hadn't expanded. We hadn't made it to the West Coast yet, and so they did have rudimentary trails to get to the dams."

How Watkins Glen got Promoted

So, there was a journalist named Morvalden Ells who had gone to the Watkins Glen, and when he was back from there, he gives his writing to the owner who owned the Newspaper thinking that he'd make some money and if they could get someone to fix the trails maybe they could tourism too. To promote the idea and to attract people, he gave the names to the falls that we use today - Minnie Ha Ha Falls, Spiral Gorge, etc.

At one point in history, Watkins Glen was called the Switzerland of America. They also had a restaurant across the gorge called Swiss Chalet. Before the development and the promotion, it was just another trail site that everybody had to walk through, and they also used to sell lemonade here.

Legend says that the story of Minnie ha ha Falls was based on a Native American princess who had two braves interested in her. She loved one brave, and another guy was kind of an extra. So, he pushed the one guy she was in love with off the gorge. As he fell, he grabbed the ankle of the other guy, and both of them fell in the valley. Minnie Ha Ha then jumped herself, fracturing the rock in a heart-shaped pool. There is also a similar story in the stony brook. So, the journalist may have pulled names a little bit from other areas too!

So what he was able to do was that in 1863 on July 4th, he was able to open it up for tourism, and 10,000 people came that first year. That was when they use to charge everyone $1 a day at the entrance. Within two years, there were 20000 visitors.

Today, there is a vehicle use fee of $8. If you pay at Watkins Glen, you can keep the receipt and show the ticket then at other State Parks, making it user-friendly. During the week, if you a New York State Resident and over 65, you can also show the license for entry.

Watkins Glens and Sour Past

On July 7th, Watkins Glens witnessed enormous floods. It was also the year of civilian conservation during the Great Depression. It was raining like today, which slowly moved to the area and caused significant flooding. Most of the trails got washed entirely. People down in the towns also got hurt.

As we walked up in the trail, we could see the suspension bridge. Our guide says the water was just 5 feet below that bridge during the floods. The floods kicked the bridge before that into the gorge as the water was to the valley as the water was about 80 feet high, ripping everything off. The gorge was then closed for the summer of 1935.

In 1936, they opened it for temporary repairs, and the stonework that we see here was done in 1941. Our guide says, "There is one staircase that we used in 1906, but today with the rains, we probably won't get there"..

There was also a hotel that also Burnt in the 1920s at the Watkins Glen, where the lily pond is. They used to harvest rice crops. This hotel was built in 1873.

Watkins Glen International

Watkins Glen International, nicknamed "The Glen", is an automobile race track located just southwest of the village of Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. It was long known around the world as the home of the Formula One United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for twenty consecutive years (1961–1980). The circuit is known as the Mecca of North American road racing and is a very popular venue among fans and drivers.

They have Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival every year - this year in September 2022. Parked along the village's main streets, you will find over 600 classic sports cars of all ages and marques for your enjoyment. The featured highlight of the Festival is a tribute to the original Grand Prix races using the original 6.6-mile road course. The whole town shuts down, and the Festival is neat, exciting, and stands out.

Rockwell Museum and Food in Corning Downtown | A Photoessay

Have you heard of Blanket Stories? I could never imagine how blankets could be a prized possession. Yet, at the Rockwell museum where I stood, I had a tower of blankets topped over one another containing collective memories of individual blanket stories.

Whereas, downtown Corning is a college town where huge servings of Mac and Cheese at the FoodNetwork recognized Mooney's blew my gut. They say this is one of the top places in the nation to get Mac and Cheese!

If you have in mind what a small city like Corning will have to offer than the Corning Museum of Glass, you may not have explored the vibrant small town in Upstate New York just yet, but it truly deserves it. We spent five days visiting downtown Corning mainly at night for dinners, but there was always good food and good people.

Blanket Stories at Rockwell Museum

I will conveniently walk you through the city through the photo essay. Our Boltbus(from New York - Bukhingam - Corning) dropped us in Corning, and just a few feet away was Rockwell Museum.

Sadly, I hear that Boltbus since 2021, has suspended services. The other alternatives would be Megabus or Greyhound.

The Rockwell Museum collection portrays America's spirit, character, and values through the eyes of American artists. I, of course, loved the Blanket Stories Tower, which was unique. But I also loved the collection of Guns and artifacts by Native Americans. There's a lot to see in this museum, and one can easily spend half a day. The Giftshops also contain cute little things such as Handpainted socks.

Food and Such

I don't know how many of us go to Corning to walk by the lanes. My first time in the town was merely a sole visit to Corning Museum of Glass. However, this time since we stayed for longer, we yearned to explore more.

Thanks to newfound friends from TEBX(Travel Blog Exchange) such as Jason Rupp, Jason Barnette, April Hope(who I traveled with and is a long-time friend), and Amanda, exploring the city was a breeze.

We walked by the downtown and tasted some fantastic homemade flavors of ice cream samples at the Dippity Do Dahs Homemade Ice Cream. Some of the unique ones were French Toast and more.

After that, we took the taxi to our stay at Holiday Inn at Painted Post, located just on the outskirts of Corning. The hotel is basic and affordable yet connected.

Small towns always bring us familiarity. And what we experienced over the next five days was unusual. Little did we know when we would call a cab, either of the two drivers would come making us think if those two were the only two drivers in town. We became acquaintances to somewhat friends, who could share the history and the culture of the place. He told us about the Painted Post and its connection with Native Americans. He even gifted us glasses which we found was a lovely gesture.

Usually, after the TEBX sessions, my newfound friends and I would hunt down downtown Corning for some food. The market street of Corning has tiny restaurants galore. Food was so plenty that we all connected over food and drinks, more than the sessions.

Just stroll by the street, and most often than not, you will find anything within walkable distance. Whatever we wanted, whether it was Tacos, or Burgers and Beer, or Fusion Food at the Cellar or Cocktails at Hand and Foot, we got them all.

Corning Museum of Glass | How I made my own Glass

Ah! Glass. What else can I say? I often wondered, "How were you created?" I couldn't resist getting to know you better because you were so visually appealing, whether transparent, structured, carved, or colored. Today, I appreciate you even more because I made my Glass at the Corning Museum, and you had to go through melting, forming, blasting, and a variety of other processes, yet you came out as if nothing had happened.

At the Corning Museum, I did check the Glass Making schedule at the welcome center and enrolled in one of those available classes.

Glassforming

We made our own Glass Flower using the Glassforming process, which allows us to choose the colors and then shape and tweeze the hot furnace glass. When I was making my own Glass Flower, I didn't know if I could make one. With the hot furnace Glass in one hand and tweezer in another, I had envisioned myself making something weirdly random, let alone a flower. Yet my palpitation turned into excitement when you came out as I had imagined. The good thing is, they even let you take your Glass back. We must wait for the Glass to cool completely before picking it up the next day.

SandBlasting

This time we made our etched Glass. Sandblasting is the term for this procedure. I'd call Glass peeling away and revealing its true colors in layman's terms. With Silicon Carbide on our Glass and stickers, a full-blown 45 pounds per square inch of pressure passed through the machine.

I had often wondered if my random sticker placement would result in an unsightly, unusable Glass, but it surprised me when it came out of the machine looking quite lovely. The trick is to put stickers on the areas that we don't want to be sparkly, i.e., matt. Cubic zirconium is the most well-known version, according to our demonstrator Cat.

Silicon Carbide, a material used in race cars and spaceships, was used, and we were talking about removing a whole layer of Glass while the colors on the sticker faded. Yes, it's fragile, but it came out as a lovely decorative piece.

I would strongly advise you to use your time slot for the Glass Studio, or you can wait for your turn at the open class outside the CMOG building. It's a must-do!

Corning Museum of Glass: A Glass Lover's Paradise!

From Roman Glass to Murano Glass, Micromosaic Paintings to Optical Fibres, the Corning Museum of Glass exhibits, demonstrations and the in-house docent's tours are treasures to look around. Established in 1951 by Corning Glass Works(now Corning Incorporated) it is a must-do on a road trip from New York. I have been there twice and have never gotten bored. I even got a chance to try my hand at Glass making at their studios.

Did you know? During the 1900s, newspapers referred to it as Crystal City because it sold many glass and glass products worldwide.

Where is the Corning Museum of Glass?

How to reach Corning:

It is conveniently located around 3 hours from New York and is easy to reach by road. If you do not have a car to drive, as we did not, plenty of buses go to Corning, some with one stop at Binghamton, NY. The nearest airport is Elmira(22 min) if one does not want to go via road.

Travel within Corning:

Within Corning, one can easily take cheap and reliable taxis.

There is plenty to do in the area. A free shuttle bus runs continuously from the Welcome Center of the Museum and to the Rockwell Museum and downtown Corning, where you'll find Historic Market Street shops and restaurants.

It is best to combine it with a visit to Watkins Glen State Park, the Finger Lakes, and Ithaca. It also makes for an excellent place to stop for a few days before continuing north to Niagara. Letchworth State Park, located between Corning and Niagara Falls, is worth visiting.

What to expect?

Parking: We've never had a problem finding a parking spot here. On-site primary parking is available. It's just off I-86 at Exit 46. Keep an eye out for CMoG banners and a Welcome Center.

Entry Ticket: The CMOG (Corning Museum of Glass) admission fee is $10 for residents and $20 for general admission. Kids 17 and under can come free.

Top things to look inside

How many days should you plan to spend here? It is possible to complete it in a single day, but it may be stressful. I recommend visiting the galleries for at least two days, watching the demonstrations, and participating in glass-making workshops.

Wandering inside such a big museum can be overwhelming. So here's a rundown of my favorites:

1. 35 Centuries of Glass Gallery: This is the most rewarding gallery to visit, whether with a docent or on your own. This gallery will take you through the various stages of glass evolution:

a) Roman Empire:

The Romans invited two things that we still use today: Glass and furnaces. The journey began around 20-30 AD when Caseous Agassi was dictator, and things started to happen in the Roman Empire, where finances improved, and people became more organized and creative. The Roman Empire spanned the entire Mediterranean.

We had glassmakers who would break the Glass, which was then given to glassworkers who would melt the Glass to create the body, then sold to glass marketers at the marketplace.

That was when they hadn't figured out how to clean the Glass. The Glass would have a lot of brown and green undertones here.

b) From Mediterranian to the Middle East to France:

When people moved by air to the Middle East, the North, and further into France, they adapted their methods and experimentation based on religion, location, and design. During that time, they did a lot of experimentation with enamel. They also experimented with stains such as Silver Oxide and Copper Oxide.

Our docent directed us to the mask lamp and explained that if we mixed colors into Gum Arabic and painted it out before refiring the Glass, it bonds and becomes one piece, but if we take our hands and go over it, we can still feel it.

c) The Venetian Glass / The Bubbled Glass of Murano:

We talked about the 1400s AD when Venetians were experimenters who kept everything in the family. All of the Glass recipes they created were only shared within their family in Italy.

There were so many hash crops in the area that they soon started tearing down houses to make way for the development of Glass in the area. The government then decided to relocate them to the Italian island of Murano. That is why Murano has become the world's glass capital.

The Venetians had sworn that they would never reveal their recipes, even if it meant death. These families shared information and worked together to create clear Glass.

Murano Glass is hand-blown, so bubbles and asymmetry are to be expected. So there were bubbles inside these glasses, and they got there eventually, but it took a lot of trial and error, fine-tuning, and fining.

To get the bubbles out of the Glass, one must control the temperature because the bubbles come from the bottom of the Glass, rise to the top, grow larger, and explode at the top, releasing the gas. As the docent pointed out in the images above, these bubbles are geometrically placed in the Glass on purpose in some exhibits.

We can do that here in Corning, he says. Venetians used enamels to enhance worldly outwork. They also began combining various pieces of Glass to create multiple types of sculptures.

d) 1600- 1700 AD: During the 1600s, people experimented with clear Glass and spectacles. Microscopes and telescopes were invented between 1600 and 1700.

e) In 1800, 's In India, England established a glass market. The market was created for the most affluent Nobel families. They went with Chandeliers into these families. Chandeliers of this size were hung from the ceiling.

f)Micromosaic: Micromosaic is a completely different type of glassmaking. Our docent directed us to a Micromosaic portrait made of about 2000 pounds of Glass. It was created in the early 1900s and has approximately 25000 different colours. During the process of Glassmaking, the glass sheet was broken into small pieces (i.e 1500 pieces of glasses per square inch)

g)Mosaic Studio Painting: The Vatican Museum Studio is now the conservatory for Vatican City for all the repair work for all the building artwork. Everything that comes out of Mosaic studio is meant to look like a painting. It's their operating procedure.

They use micro scissors to position the micromosaics. They usually make a lot of portraits with the sky, and the rest is added based on what the customers want.

h)The Glass Center began on the East Coast of America and gradually spread to Pittsburg. The glass industry in America flourished, giving birth to Corning Incorporated and bringing about the transformation from Farm Town to Crystal City.

i) Tiffany: This magnificent Glass piece was initially in New York before being donated to the Corning Museum of Glass in 1999. This all-around cut glass is created so that there are brushstrokes on the face where light enters. Tiffany incorporated these into the design.

2. Glass in Optical Fibres

When we think of Glass, we think of window panes, drinking glasses, etc. Optical fibers operate based on the physics of internal reflection. The red light beam exits the first material and bounces back into both times because we have two transparent materials that form a reflective barrier that pushes light back into the first one. There is also a sample of Copper Wire, as Copper Wire handles approximately 500,000 phone calls.

On the other hand, optical fibers are tiny piece of glass that is slightly thicker than human hair and sends signals in the form of a laser light codec. This single optical fiber can carry approximately 9 billion phone calls. For the copper wire to stay with it, we need 10,000 times the amount of copper wire on the wall. So you can see how amazing it is to communicate with light.

Seed Beads of Czechoslovakia

It took 4.5 million Czechoslovakian glass beads and over a year and a half of threading by women to create a mile-long seed bead with a beginning and an end.

Art has taken precedence in our lives even more since the pandemic. While museums were once viewed primarily as educational institutions that we could cross off our bucket list, as we spend more time at home indulging in our artistic endeavors and creativity, the role of art has become central in our lives, necessitating the need to get out there to heal and understand through art.

Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director M+ says, “Great cities have great cultural institutions. M+ is the first global museum. In Asia, there is no institution that’s collecting visual art together with design and architecture and moving image, none. When M+ opens it will change people’s life.”

West Kowloon is so diverse that it will pique your curiosity no matter what your interests are. We could marvel at the skyscrapers and mountains, or we could delve into West Kowloon's history of seafaring Tanka People - also known as Water Gypsies or Water people - docking their fishing boats. We could go on and on about our experience at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre, the only surviving pre-World War II theatre. Or we could keep our cameras ready for the Flight of Stairs, which is a series of steps with a 2D flower garden painted on them.

I have created itineraries picking the best of Art Galleries, Street Art, and Artsy Cafes in Kowloon. So, let's begin our journey of ten of my favorite spots from the West Kowloon Cultural District:

The Best of Art Galleries:

I've put together a map that highlights the local art galleries. Because the loop is only 20 minutes long, art gallery enthusiasts will appreciate the variety of options available.

1. M+: If you thought M+ was just another museum, you're in for a surprise. M+ is a must-see on the West Kowloon waterfront, featuring 20th and 21st century visual art, design, and architecture, as well as moving visuals and the thematic area of Hong Kong visual culture. Jacques Herzog, Founding Partner of Herzog & de Meuron, says, “By visual art, we mean it’s much more open for performance, for photography, for ceramic work, for design, for architecture. That variety and diversity is important today than it was 10 or 20 years ago.”

There are about 8000 works in the museum, plus 50,000 items collection dedicated to architecture. The collection is divided into 3 areas: 1) Design and Architecture. 2)Moving Image 3) Visual Art.

2. Hong Kong Museum of Art: You can also go to the newly renovated Hong Kong Museum of Art, which has rotating exhibitions and international exhibits. The Hong Kong Museum of Art is the city's first public art museum, with a collection of approximately 17,000 artefacts ranging from Chinese antiquities and calligraphy to modern installations and Western paintings.

Anyone who gets more interested in calligraphy can also visit Yau Sang Cheong to learn more about the Chinese Calligraphy. They also have workshops to learn the fundamentals of this traditional art form.

Yau Sang Cheong transports you to the brushstrokes that defined classical Chinese art and calligraphy, as well as a specialty shop selling calligraphy brushes, ink, and other Chinese art supplies.

3. Museum of History: The museum's exhibitions trace the city's evolution from a modest fishing village to the bustling metropolis it is today, with fascinating relics and photographs providing an insight into the city's past!

4. Cultural Center: Head to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to witness a live performance, ranging from ballet shows to theatre productions, for culture vultures who wish to continue their discovery of arts and creativity along the harbourfront. Since its opening in 1989, this multipurpose venue has been the leading location for cultural performance, and it is well known for its visual appeal — its hallways and consistent tilework lend themselves particularly well to dramatic Instagram pictures!

We may momentarily stretch our legs at the Art Park and waterfront promenade, which are ideal for green grass spaces and skyline photos, since we will be in and near Victoria Harbor when visiting M+ and the Cultural Centre.

The Best of Street Art

Let’s begin by tracing directions on Google map of our favourite street arts.

1. Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market: I strongly suggest stopping by the Gwo Laan, or Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market if you are near the Yau Ma Tei Theatre or the Temple Street area. Imagine going through a sensory overload of fresh fruit, both local and exotic, while appreciating the art deco brick and stone structures of this historic building. Shutter art captures the lively market's comings and goings, from personified apples, oranges, and pineapples to a quiet scene of mahjong-playing locals. They say that the real action in the market is during the night, when tons and thousands of boxes of produce are moved in and out in this large wholesale fruit market. See if you can find the name plates adorning the shopfronts, which bear the names of various firms that are often as old as the structures themselves.

To view shutter art, you must visit while the shutters are down, around mid-morning, after the stalls have completed their early morning bidding session and before the market opens to the public for retail shopping.

2. Flight of Stairs: This is a popular photo op for both locals and photographers. Different sections of the stairwell are painted with a different type of flower, so you can sit amongst a field of purple tulips, yellow sunflowers, or red roses — whichever appeals to you the most.

3. 176–178 Shanghai Street: Only a few buildings in Hong Kong still have a covered terrace on the ground level in the manner of historic shophouses, but one of them is the building at 176–178 Shanghai Street. They were mostly occupied by Chinese merchants in the past and were known locally as tong lau, which literally means 'Chinese building.' Though the four-story tenement building has since been rebuilt, a big sign on top of the structure carries the numerals '1940,' the year of construction. It currently houses a typical pawn store, which is a dying industry in and of itself.

The characters for the bat’s Chinese name (蝠) and good fortune (福), and ‘to turn around’ (倒) and ‘to arrive’ (到) are homophones, auspiciously alluding to the arrival of good fortune.

4. Surrealist mural piece: Murals are a living art canvas that may be used to express a variety of subjects. The Surrealist Mural Piece, for example, is located on Shanghai Street, near to the Red Brick Building, which is a popular tourist attraction. The large artwork illustrates urban life alongside a plea to mankind to adopt environmentally conscious actions. At first look, we perceive a robot-like creature standing on top of a flowering bush and riding a bicycle.

As we explore deeper into the mural's secret meaning, our attention is drawn to his mandarin vest. His waistcoat is adorned with windows and air conditioners, emulating the characteristic building facades of Hong Kong's cityscape, including the one on which it rests! Isn’t it an interesting way to know how the typical building facades of Hong Kong are!

The Best of Artsy Cafes

The two artsy cafes mentioned below are situated 5 minutes apart from each other, and this is where they stand on Google Map.

1. PICKY: Begin your tour with a cup of coffee or tea at PICKY, which is located inside Tung Nam Lou, a heritage building that has been turned into a boutique art hotel. It began as a neighborhood seafood restaurant, then evolved into an office building, and finally into a celebration of arts and culture in the community. Explore the terrace for views of historic tong lau buildings all around — a flavor of old Hong Kong — and drink tea or coffee surrounded by art pieces and design-conscious furnishings.

2. Mido Café: Make a pit stop at Mido Cafe for some classic Hong Kong cha chaan teng cuisine if you're hungry after a screening at the Broadway Cinamatheque (a unique theatre that runs arthouse films in addition to blockbuster movies). Since their opening in 1950, their basic interiors have remained the same, consisting of classic remains of Hong Kong's newly industrialised landscape.

Movies are works of art because they are interpretations of reality. If you're in Kowloon and curious about regional cinema, the Vision Signage Production Mural on Reclamation Street is a good photo opportunity because the owner's film props appear in 90 percent of Hong Kong-based films. The Box, Hong Kong's largest black box theatre, is housed in Freespace at Art Park, making it an ideal venue for experimental productions and events. Also, take a walk down the Avenue of Stars next to the Victoria Harbor and marvel at the entertainment titans who shaped Hong Kong's indelible film industry and continue to inspire us today.

The West Kowloon Cultural District is hence one of the HK Neighborhoods that is unique enough to inspire a great vacation with a high-energy vibe you must not miss!

New York | How Fashion Evolved in the time of Covid-19 | NYFW

The idea of putting New York on hold is a metaphor. We've seen this city fight against stillness, and movement is what its soul craves. In the last two years, the fashion world in New York has undergone a series of transformations. We've come a long way in a short time, from an economic slumber that forced mass-market brands to close their doors to the emergence of style that served a higher purpose than just couture.

In 2020, I admired her designs from far at #newyorkfashionweek. In 2021 I got to wear them ❤️ Her designs are straight out of dreamland, and the uniqueness of it is so profound that even the passersby at the Central Park complimented me for it.

Our needs have changed as we grapple with depressing news in today's world. While many may have adopted a lifestyle in which ice-cream bellies have replaced traditional forms, we cannot deny that fashion is responsible for a large portion of each country's livelihood. After the pandemic is over, we'll need clothing, though slightly oversized as comfort takes precedence over style, sooner or later.

We are slowly and figuratively trying to inject hope in despair by accepting pear-sized humane models with open arms, walking for more severe causes that need a voice, and bringing local artisans to light. Although some may refer to it as frugal, I refer to it as expansion. New York must go on and in style, whatever the case may be.

Local Cultures Abound

Vanny Tousignant, a well-known fashion designer and creator of International Fashion & Arts Week / New York Indonesia Fashion Week says: "I open the doors to the world of fashion in New York for Indonesian designers and artisans. Many of them don't know how to get here or how to be rewarded for their efforts."

Since the beginning of the year, magazines have been at the forefront of regaining visibility. This year, we saw her expand her wings into magazines, where her work could reach out to the masses who are currently housebound. We're reviving the age-old tradition of reading magazines.

Fashion Goes Locally Outdoors

As doors open to new ways to maintain fashion, we've seen it regain momentum once more as Covid cases begin to fall in New York. Even at its peak, we discovered that alternate methods of sustaining were the season's theme. We've seen online auditions and voting for private shows (Couture Fashion Week).

During the past six months, Alexander Gurman, the producer of Mr. Great Fashion Show, has come up with many such ideas, holding multiple shows in the area, often outdoors where risk is lower.

The outdoor shoot provides space for the models and makes them feel safer. The added advantage is the sparkle in the eyes of bystanders who have previously just seen fashion behind closed doors.

Natasha Berezhnaya's designs, which are renowned in the theatrical world, have been seen floundering in angelic cityscapes.

Fashion Goes Billboards and UN

Almost all the designers that have modeled for or collaborated with, including Pamela Quinzi, Heritage India's Prashant Goel, Natasha Berezhnaya, Vanny Tousignant, Dovile, were honored to be published on the Times Square Billboards/Big Adverts this past year. It was interesting because we shifted our focus from runways to getting ourselves out there in the world.

Also, I was fortunate to be modeling for the designer with the flare for Indian costumes, "Prashant Goel," at the United Nations Building in New York, which was a very unusual location yet very appealing as "We were representing India and its costumes to the world." Designer Prashant Goel also received the Highest Honor Award, a Resolution from Her Excellency, the Mayor of Union, New Jersey, Michele Delisfort at the United Nations for his outstanding promotion of multiculturalism, arts and cultural diversity. Prashant designed pieces for Disney productions, the film Eat Pray Love, which starred Julia Roberts, and has designed for several government officials, including an anarkali gown for Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney.

I think the theme this past year was, "If people aren't reaching us, let us reach them." Everything was experimental yet very profound. It spoke for itself in many ways; as many new models got a chance, designers focused more on building their profiles, makeup artists such as Nighat Mua launched their magazines or got published, like that. I felt a great sense of happiness for them because you know they deserve every ounce of recognition if you have worked with them. I have worked with Nighat and she is a pro as a make up artist. Her speciality is she never does over the top make up, yet she makes it look very natural and refined.

Fashion & Cause

Amid the doom and gloom of winters and Covid-19, Alexander Gurman, a city native, arranged a fashion show with the dogs to spread positivity and optimism while also bringing attention to more severe issues such as animal cruelty.

Fashion, Creativity & Exotic Locales

Dovile Riebschlager, originally from Lithuania lives in Chicago, tells how water droplets inspired her when she was a teenager. Her innovative ensembles are now one-of-a-kind, as she aims for excellence in every piece she makes.

She frequently travels to New York from Chicago to perform in various shows, including Alexander's. Her portfolio has recently been packed with outdoor shoots in multiple locations around the United States, including the epic terrains of Utah. Isn't it fascinating how nature, as her source of inspiration, combines so well with the ambiance and textiles?

We've seen Vegan heels. We've seen sustainable fashion, as well as Patrick Duffy's Global Fashion Exchange. The idea is to let fashion 'quote and quote' there while reducing the amount of waste we produce and more wisely use our resources, providing the best and the best to wear.

In the coming years, the age of use-and-throw fashion will become obsolete as we focus on quality rather than quantity, which is also the need of the hour. Fashion resell / exchange sites, such as Poshmark and Thredup, for example, are growing in popularity, as are swap programs all over the city.We are leaning more towards eco-friendly and recycling fashion, which is a very effective change.

A Boom for Photographers

This year has been both a bane and a boom, said Alexander, a fashion photographer and frequent traveler in the region. Although fashion used to only refer to fashion shows, this year has seen a massive increase in the hiring of freelance creative artists by magazines. I thoroughly enjoyed Alexander's company and ideas during the photo shoot because he was attentive and experimental.

Several fashion photographers' creative studios, such as Charles Mitchell's, have been overrun with portrait photography bookings. I loved Charles's photography skills because he clicks plenty of pictures, and so many of them come out to be just perfect, whether it's in the studio or outdoors. I think he can make look anyone beautiful on camera.

Meanwhile, cameraman Luis helped me transition from just a regular runway model to a media host for NYFW and other shows during the pandemic, and I thought that was a big jump. Still, his constant support and videography skills made me believe in myself.

But is it all safe?

Fashion has thrived, and designers have pushed the envelope using adaptive methods. However, a few designers and models would still prefer to stay at home rather than risk their health which as a matter of fact is a choice.

Despite the slow speed and minimal participation over the last two years, a flow has emerged. Fashion transforms from a caterpillar to a butterfly, with more meaning, alignment, and a way to meet the masses rather than just the elites.

As regular people, models aren't dumb, and when I did shows when Covid was prevalent, most models came in their masks too! When it was at its peak, shows were cancelled or such venues were chosen where crowd was a distant possibility or live online shows were streamed.

Designers are rooting for upcoming Feb 2022, but when it was September 2021 when situation was grim yet aiming to be better, we've found ways to survive and thrive. The proof is in the way we put on the shows. One such event was Joe Corbalis's Westchester Fashion Show, which took place. The fashion quotient must not die, even if it is masked and in style.

What do I think as a model?

If you were to ask me as a model, what did I gain from it? It's lovely to be a part of the change. When I first arrived in New York, I was astounded by how well people dressed. But, as I dug deeper, I realized that New York was born to breathe fashion.

It is now, as it has always been, a part of New York culture. And, while there were times last season when I stayed at home, refusing to leave, I couldn't help but smile when I saw the fashion shows I did or the editorials I got published. We discovered excellent copying mechanisms where outdoor became the need of the hour, and editorials took center stage.

A part of me refers to it as "creative madness." If it wasn't for an outdoor fashion show, would I have walked in the snow or with a dog? No. I would be ecstatic if I got published without even submitting a cover letter to magazines. But that is a rarity. Had I taken part in some studio shoots? Perhaps.

Nonetheless, here I am, filling that void with the opportunities that have arisen. I believe it's a space where reflection has given rise to "what can we do" rather than "what should we do," and it's a lovely place with the potential to brew change for the upcoming shows, whenever that may be.

New York Fashion Week | How I became a runway model!

It was in the year 2019-20 that I lived my dream of being a runway model at the most prestigious fashion show in the world - the New York Fashion Week. As an amateur in Fashion Week shows, those seconds on the runway felt like a ticking time bomb.

What happens if I lose my balance? Malfunctions are possible, or are they? What if I come to a halt due to stage fright? Is my smile elegant enough? Is my make-up still on point? Finally, am I even cut out to be a model?

The high expectations of excellence coupled with the elegance of movement and poise may make it seem as if each model is born with it; however, the truth is that it takes a lot of sweat and teamwork to achieve what may seem to many to be an impossible dream.

NYFW is back. From runways to interviews to behind the scenes, check out my experience as a runway model and a first time host. This was a chance of a lifetime as I not only got a chance to walk for them, but several other shows during the NYFW including the Couture Fashion Week , Downtown Fashion Week etc.

Yet I wouldn't trade it for a dime, as I learned so much. I remember the first time I walked and the sweat on my forehead. It was both terrifying and thrilling. Touchwood, God has blessed me that even during Covid times, I got published in two New York-based Magazines.

My family in India always warned me that modeling was not a respectable career. The tales of prying eyes lusting for the cobwebs of greed and superficiality continued to circulate. It wasn't until I took the plunge that I understood that, though I wouldn't refute these arguments, I can always admit that there are good people and bad people in my 1.5 years in this business.

Although no one speaks about goodness, people are eager to label the whole industry as trash based on what they've read about it, even though they've never worked in it. Coming from someone who wasn't born on a silver spoon but managed to smash it with grace, as did many of my peers, I'd say that not everything you hear is entirely accurate.

It is also necessary to be cautious than naive in this industry, as a few may be willing to take advantage of you. In some instances, you must know how to shove off men - I wouldn't say that creepy designers or camerapersons don't exist. They do, and you will get the hint. It's unfortunate when things happen to a select few; however, being vigilant matters for the most part. This holds for all industry; fashion it is a little more. I never felt the water running under the bridge. If I were uncomfortable around a designer or a cameraperson, I would say no. You must know where to draw the line.

Yes, a few models are lounging around; no, it isn't every one of us. If your fears are holding you back, it's time to learn the truth.

Shortcuts to being a model

1. Pageant Participation

Winning a prestigious pageant is a pretty sure way to gain immediate attention and connections. Participating in a pageant necessitates a high level of commitment, and the competition is fierce and reasonable. When judging the finalists, the talent round, their ability to walk confidently, their introduction, and their answers in the question-and-answer round are considered.

Most of us have already watched Pageants on television. I believe that each of us should participate in a Pageant at least once in our lives. If you win or lose, the possibilities are potentially rewarding in the long run. In the next blog post, I'll tell you about my pageant experience.

2. Paid Participation

Other opportunities may arise due to honing your modeling aspirations as a newbie, depending on the types of pageants you've completed. As a result, if you have an interest and manage to interact with the right people, pageants can be an excellent introduction to the world of modeling and even acting.

I discovered from my own experience that most of these opportunities cost the models extra, as participating in fashion shows would cost anything between $100 and $250 (in the United States). The choice is entirely yours; some people don't want to spend time looking for openings by the book, so these approaches will get you results quickly and with minimal effort. Depending on the type of Pageant you have participated in, the cost can be complimentary or vary.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that specific organizers are taking advantage of your desperation to walk the ramp walk and charging exorbitantly on top of it. Even so, some genuine ones can be found through solid connections and ramp walks with reputable designers. Participants are less likely to be clawed because pageants are seen as respectful.

There are several different styles of pageants held worldwide, and it's essential to know which one will get you where you want to go and how prestigious it is.

Miss / Mrs. India New Jersey was the more prestigious and well-known of the two pageants I competed in: IFAB Model of the Year and Mrs. India New Jersey. In the United States, it is done state-by-state, then country-by-country, and lastly worldwide. It is by the same franchise as Miss India, so the participation stands solid and legit. However, one must neither disappoint themselves nor stop at just one pageant - there are several, and if we compare, they also give the same benefits as this one. In New York, there was Mrs. Bharat, Miss Tourism, Miss Bollywood, Miss Immigrant. There are plenty, but one must be eager to know what leads to where and what that pageant's motto is.

The winner is invited to prominent state events because they proudly represent the state and country from which they hail. Through the victory fund and invites, some of the winners end up undertaking charity activities. Overall, it's a fantastic chance for personal and professional development.

Pageants can also lead to acting opportunities.

I know a few of my pageant-winner ladies who have acted given the opportunity. It could be a small role; it could be significant. It could be in a television commercial, a serial, a regional film etc.

When you see your real-life friends do it, all the rumors you've heard vanishes. So, I wouldn't suggest that the catastrophe stories you hear aren't true, but they aren't everyone's reality. Many people have broken the ice, worked hard, and gotten where they are sole because of their abilities.

My mom still refuses to believe it. Till about a year or two back, she didn't even think that one can be a model for real if they have no prior legit connections, and even if they do, the industry will heavily exploit them. None of that happened. The threat may be honest, but realities are beyond that.

My first modeling break occurred just after I competed in a pageant. During Pageant rehearsals, the contacts I made helped me land my first modeling gig in Nach Baliye USA, where I got to walk the runway with other contestants. Tarang, the organizer, instructed us to perfect our walks and practice in front of a mirror.

Following that, I approached fashion photographers and designers, who gave me a second chance and scheduled another runway walk for me. Following my pageant victory, I paid to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week's Couture Fashion Week as a first-timer.

I later joined simply on the basis of relationships created and auditions without spending a dollar. So yes, there are both ways to participate.

3. Going the Traditional Way!

Know your city's local fashion walks

Even though the ramp walks through Pageants were sufficient to establish some profile, my heart yearned for that extra mile where I could experience it as regulars do without having to pay money.

What if I wasn't a contestant in a beauty pageant? Did you know that the walks in Pageant are primarily different from the ramp walk?

That's because the attention in the Pageant is on you; in the ramp walk, it's on what you're bringing out, i.e., the designs. And it isn't a cakewalk either.

Since there is a lack of knowledge about ramp walks, people are intimidated when you tell them about your modest origins because they imagine you as a model from the start who knows everything.

You got the chance because you were in New York, as everybody claims. Yes, I believe that New York provides us with many choices, but as with anything else, you must take risks. Just because someone enjoys flying does not mean they are already a pilot.

Cut to the chase; as Pageant contestants, we were unaware that we still needed to get outside of our comfort zones and keep things going on our own because the Pageant's glory only lasts a few months before it becomes obsolete and stalled. As Pageant contestants, my friend and I began meeting new people, and one thing led to another.

I cannot overstate the importance of each stepping stone in this industry. Thanks to designer Philippe Valy, I got my first break as an impromptu model for his designs at an art exhibition. After that, I attended fashion gatherings with him and his team to Westchester Fashion Week Party by Joe Corbalis in New York(That is also where I met Saimaji), Scarsdale Fashion Week, and got featured in a pop band 'The Lox' by Mills Miller Productions.

My friend Itishree (who has two young children) was more motivated than I was. We joined Facebook fashion forums as a result of her foresight. We would not have known about such fashion events happening every week in the city if we hadn't met Jewelry Designer Saima Chaudhry at an Indian Fair and walked for her.

Participating in local fashion events (whether at the Skyroom in Times Square or elsewhere in the city) helped us believe in ourselves. It also allowed us to get some fair practice on a smaller platform to let loose and let learning take its course.

We met many entrants from college, models modeling in their old age, models juggling their children and lives, and friends of models who were interested in giving it a try and were permitted to do so.

They instructed us on where we should walk, pause, and pose. It even included photoshoots and even after-parties for those who were able to wait and mingle. I also discovered that the majority of designers were aware of your requirements. If you were uncomfortable wearing something, you could respectfully decline, or you could tell them that you aren't, and they can give you something else to wear if they have.

In addition, modeling has something for everyone. You could be as reserved as the girl next door who has to use the restroom to change, or you could be someone who becomes relaxed, changing in front of select few (primarily females in front of female designers); at the end of the day, it becomes as professional as it is.

Most people don't have time to assess the semi naked bodies, and since the show is time-intensive, everybody focuses on making it a success!

One must always be grateful for the crew in any fashion show. The makeup & hair artists, photographers, assistant designers, and designers themselves are all a team. So many times, makeup has transformed me into a better version of myself, and a few times also has been such that it made me burst into tears of disapproval. Hence, models need to learn how to do their makeup, angles, weaknesses, and strength despite everyone surrounding them for quick fixes. Of course, comfortable pair of high heels hurt no one.

During the same time, we met designers (such as Shamsun Elite, Natasha Berezhnaya, Pamela Quinzi, Dean John, Annitta Ausar, and Alexander Gurman) who wanted to exhibit their work in between New York Fashion Week months.

We also encountered several journalists and photographers, some of whom worked for well-known publications and others who were just as eager to get their names on the wall as we were.

I really loved walking on Annitta Ausar designs on Vegan leather in a local fashion show.

One of the models from the show 'Dawn Mecca' invited me to be an award handler at Winter Film Festival Awards, NYC.

We might have done something if we had known it wasn't just practice but could contribute to something more concrete at the time. Wise models learned this early on and participated in NYFW and be featured on magazine covers. My friend and I also walked in a few shows with designers like Shamsun Elite, with whom we had previously walked in Skyroom.

I believe that auditioning for New York Fashion Week on my own was a game-changer for me. I can set all of my previous experiences aside and conclude that this well-organized platform is incredible.

Castings/auditions are akin to exams for me, and I'm terrified of them. For seconds of your walk, you can be accepted or denied. My first audition / casting call was for New Jersey Fashion Week, for which two of my friends and I were chosen. Following that, we got to practice our runs, and one of the designers complimented me, boosting my self-esteem. But that wasn't the only thing there was.

Most of the castings have dress code as black.

As we have resumes in other industries, we have comp card in modeling. A comp card is a one-page profile with your portrait, front and side shots along with your vitals(height, weight etc).

We discovered that while NYFW is a global forum, millions of people apply. We traveled to New York for the audition, waited in line, moved in batches, and were ultimately denied. It happened several times. We were frustrated that the more popular channels may not suit us because they chose the best walks. We would have judged them above us if we were judges.

And when you've worked hard to get there, that's a tough pill to swallow. Even though a part of me was mulling about the possibility that it was too far away, I am someone who does not give up easily. That's when I found out about another NYFW casting and decided to go instead of staying at home. And I managed to get through it somehow.

I realized at that point that I needed to do something more specific to pass this audition. I practiced in front of my home mirror, even though my house is cramped and small. Initially, I was hesitant to participate in the show because one of the designers had lingerie in her line, and I assumed that I would have to wear it.

But, as I previously said, saying "no" can be done in various ways. If you're a model, you have the option of walking with other designers if you're not happy with anything. However, I can't stop thinking about how taken aback I was by the whole concept on stage. I regret misjudging the situation when I saw people of all body shapes and sizes walking around in the lingerie of their choice. Initially, I had no knowledge of the designer as a human. In my defense, I was a novice at the time and had thought that the worst would happen.

These castings/auditions typically happen a month or two before the show i.e If you are aiming at February show, you must start looking for auditions in the month of Dec-Jan, if you are aiming at September show, you must start looking for auditions in the month of Jul-Aug. The call to audition posters appears mostly on Eventbrite or are shared on various Facebook groups. Also, if you are part of the local in between fashion shows, you may be well aware of it in advance through word of mouth.

NYFW Walk Experience

In any case, everything about being a part of NYFW was meticulously planned. The make-up was flawless and on time. They gave us practice walks and told us what we wanted to work on, such as not moving my arms too much because it's distracting, not doing repetitive poses unless it's planned, bringing the attitude to your face, smiling a little less, and more.

I felt like I was walking on fire to be perfect there. People there gave me feedback and helped me improve for the better. And this occurred on the day of my pre-rehearsal walk after being selected in an audition. I can still feel the terror in my stomach. They might dismiss me at any moment because I lacked formal training and was vehemently expressionless in contrast to my usual cheerful over-the-top smiles.

I'm still unsure if that's me in my show videos because I look like a runway model with attitude and heels to conquer the world. Backstage, I was also impressed with last-minute stitching and repairs; the amount of effort put in by each designer is commendable.

Following that, I appeared in many fashion shows for various designers and even became an NYFW interviewer and host. I could go on and on about it in other blogs, but the point is that the hustle is real, but it's well worth it!

Go through agencies

In the city, there are numerous modeling agencies. I wouldn't know anything about them because I never ask their advice. However, if you want to pursue modeling as a career, it's a good idea to refine your skills and join agencies that will help you get proper exposure. Even if you do not join and agency or a database, you will still learn it. As I said, I never tried them.

For example, when we walked for designer Saima Chowdhry on her jewelry line, we met several models from the same agency for the first time.

I met many others from agencies at events such as Downtown Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, Couture Fashion Week, Infinite Exposure shows and others. Designers may choose to take the whole batch from agencies because they are more likely to select qualified models over untrained models. Models can also register on websites such as Model Mayhem, which is a model database.

Take a modeling coaching.

When I participated in the "AWF to Paris" show during New York Fashion Week, I heard about modeling coaching for the first time. Within an hour, she had transformed me into a much better person than I had been. I loved how, for an hour, she became my guru, as she did with any participant who lacked. Her name in Indigo Blu and she's very good.

I then inquired about her occupation, to which she replied that she is a plus-size model and a coach. I always regret not making time to practice under her for a month because it would have transformed me into the person I had imagined myself to be, and maybe my battle with myself would have been less.

Limitations - Height, Size & Age but are they?

"It's not something we do on purpose. According to a designer, we do it this way so that we have to make one size ". Before I met with her, I had a habit of taking rejections quite personally. Since most of us are average and plus-sized women, we must open our hearts to them as a world. What sells, though, is what is shown. It's all about business, and it's constantly evolving.

So, the next time you see castings with height restrictions of 5'7" and up, which are popular at NYFW, don't be disappointed; instead, consider it a spectrum of rejection. Several 'not so tall,' 'not so slim,' and 'not so young' people are still doing it so well. In the end, I believe your self-assurance is essential. That is what the walk is all about!

The less confident you are in yourself, the more limiting your feelings about your success would be, and the less invested you will be in correcting yourself. And I'm not saying you can't feel nervous when walking with those svelte models and think you're less than, but the walk is all about positivity. It's obvious when it comes from inside.

Time Commitment & Are We Paid?

Okay, we've reached the end of our discussion. When it comes to modeling, you must ask yourself some difficult questions. Many people expect you to give up your time and contribution to the industry for free. However, after you've collaborated with a few designers, you can request a fee, which many will gladly provide. The majority of people do it as a part-time job, a freelancer, or a hobby.

Unfortunately, many fashion photographers are veterans or former military personnel who are not compensated for their work. After 1.5 years in the industry, it's a shame how expensive photography can become and how insensitive we can become towards those behind the lens. For the most part, staying alive in a pricey city like NYC is a daily challenge. I have heard numerous stories on unpaid assignments from my dear photographer friends - Luis, Alexander (ALEXMTZPHOTOS), Johnny L Sylman etc.

When NYFW shows, it can be very time-consuming, requiring all-day make-up and rehearsal sessions. NYFW shows are usually a day affair like you can be called at 11am for a show at 7pm or can be called at 2pm for a show at 8pm etc. The local city events typically begin at 8 p.m. and last until around midnight. After that, one can linger as long as they want to socialize. Even depending on the producer, some shows might run exceptionally late.

Even though I am not a social butterfly, I did enjoy talking to prominent show organizers in a select few afterparties, such as this one with infinite exposure show director who had a scheduled NYFW show in the coming week.

It is not unusual for shows to get delayed by an hour or two or more. And yes, usually, NYFW shows are so hectic that finding time to eat in between shows for a model can be challenging.

So oh yes, pack some munchies always in your bag!

Do you cut it? Different Types of Modelling

Designer Vanny Tousignant, who runs an independent show during New York Fashion week called International Fashion and Arts Week, is exceptionally picky for her models. She strives for excellence in her work and is very straightforward about her expectations.

Similarly, Heritage India's designer, Prashant Goel, wants his models to represent the grace of Indian culture.

And, for both of them, I've seen some models best suited for portrait photographs. As a result, a variety of modeling techniques emerge.

Some people excel at stills, while others excel at runways. It's all up to you. Building your profile with a skilled photographer in the area, such as Charles Mitchell & Richard Simpson, is a good idea.

Great Sand Dunes National Park | Camping & Hiking

The landscape of the Great Sand Dunes is diverse. It's almost like a painting. We used to draw such sorts as children, with all elements of nature engraved. During the spring months of late May and June, there are snow-capped mountains, dunes, and a brook. On our visit in Oct, the stream had dried up. It also boasts a varied terrain, including wetlands, woods, and tundra. Where do you think we should go hiking? We inquired of the ranger. "Do you prefer the dunes or the mountains?" she said.

It can fascinate us by altering the colors of amber at sunset and waking us up to elks in the morning by the shrubs. While we climbed, we never stopped huffing and puffing, but the vista was worth it. I told myself that this hike would take all day. Could we go to the other side if we had more time?

Do you believe we'll be able to get this far? We had no idea that even sand has a mood as we went towards the first ridge of tall dunes to see the entire dune field. It can both call us to withdraw and tempt us to sled down.

Sledding must be super fun way to get down on the incline sand slopes and many people get them!

That's where the stream flows during spring - it's at the start of the hike.

Or maybe if we started early, we could have saved us the storm; we were already getting sandblasted by the afternoon storms by the time we reached the first ridge. Some eye gear would have helped.

Great Sand Dunes is one of the best locations in the United States to enjoy the night sky. To experience it fully, one must view it on a moonless night by following the moon calendar online. The dune field has the most open area of the sky, and one can park at the Dunes parking area and take a short stroll into the dunes for excellent viewing. Although we got lazier, we preferred watching it straight from our campsite as we just had half a day.

Stay @ Pinot Flats Campground

The dunes were visible from our campground at the Pinon Flats. We had made a reservation through the recreation.gov website in advance, and we had a great time there. The bright skies with dazzling stars were the most incredible part.

Camping cost: $20.

We got our logwood from the campground canteen and attempted to start a fire with the help of a few papers we had. The wind was strong at night, and it took us some time to get there.

The canteen stocks the necessities, and the campground has restrooms.

Do not forget to get the Jolly Ranger pop from the canteen, its really nice!

For dinner, we had carried the extra lobster bisque and Beignet Bites from Pagosa Springs. If the wind wasn't heavy, we could have cooked something.

As I stretched my arms to get out of bed in the morning, an elk herd passed by. Even though many forums mention mosquito bites, we did not experience any during our October visit. The winds were strong at night, and it was cold.

I also tried out night photography on my phone camera for the first time and got some decent shots. If you're interested in attempting it, here's what the settings were.

I used Samsung Note 10. It doesn't have an incredible camera but did a decent job.
Place it on a steady surface.
Go to more > pro, then change the settings to f/1.5, the 30s, and ISO at 500.
Please put it on a timer and capture it.

Other Important Information

From Dunes Parking to High Dune on First Ridge is a hike of 2.5 miles roundtrip and there are no trails.
We don't get sand-boards inside the park. They can be obtained at Oasis store outside the park.
The Medano Creek is seasonal and easily accessible from Dunes parking. Peak flow occurs late May to early June
From Pinot Flats Campground, to Dunes Overlook is a hike of 2.3 miles roundtrip.
From Montville/Mosca Pass Trailhead are three hikes - Montville Nature Trail (0.5 miles), Mosca Pass Trail(7 miles), Wellington Ditch Trail(1 mile).
One can drive 4WD vehicle along the Medano Pass Primitive road to Sand Pit or Castle Creek Picnic areas.
If you have time, one can hike star dune(5 Hour roundtrip) - the tallest dune in America.
Enjoy Zapata Falls(20 feet high wall cascade waterfall) by taking a hike from the Zapata Falls recreational area that is located nearby from the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

My Pagosa Hot Springs Experience | A day affair into divinity

Nothing beats feeling liberated in the alluring hot springs of Pagosa for a few hours of nirvana. The name 'Pagosa' comes from the Ute word for "healing waters." There are 25 pools in the Springs, each with its personality. Pagosa also claims to have the world's deepest known Geothermal Hot springs. The Mother Spring aquifer, at over 1002 feet deep, has been certified as "The World's Deepest" by Guinness World Records.

It was also my first encounter with a clothing-optional hot spring at The Healing Waters Resort and Spa, where I overcame my uneasiness about going the full monty.

Pagosa is genuinely unique in that it provides us with hot springs of varying temperatures. Spending a day here is very easy for hot water lovers, and the sulfur-rich content of the water makes your skin smooth, despite the pungent smell.

The History

I often wonder if Hot Springs at Pagosa was formed or framed and how it was before any of the major resorts existed. Did the locals then visit these pools of water to purify and heal them before delving into a more business-like structure that was systematic and convenient for fussy travelers like us? According to history, it was once popular with Native Americans before becoming a white settlement in the 1800s.

As I dipped my two feet into the San Juan River, my curiosity got even stronger. The small black pebbles in the riverbed made me wonder if the hot springs and volcanoes were linked. The springs' hot water comes from cracks that allow it to rise from more than 6000 feet beneath the earth's surface, warmed by excess heat from the area's volcanic activity.

This modest yet famous bathhouse is nestled along the picturesque San Juan river bank and worth visiting. Pagosa Springs has a laid-back atmosphere, and it's easy to see why. Nothing beats romancing the waters, which are very calming to both the soul and the skin. I could lay here for hours and yet have a childlike delight in exploring the many bath pools.

The Springs is popular with both locals and tourists, so the line that formed outside the Springs as soon as it opened was not unexpected. Your food and drink are not permitted inside, but the resort staff can carry refreshments to your pool.

Entry Ticket: $49 per adult

Open to Public: 9am - 10pm

1. As soon as you walk in, you'll want to dip your toes in all of the pools. Then, over time, the fact that there are so many people and so few entries in each will begin to overwhelm you.

2. I would suggest reading the temperature of each pool and grabbing hold of it if it hasn't reached capacity (on average six people) or is empty. Also, make sure to pick up your towels or rent them from the gift shop.

3. Temperatures ranging from 90 to 97 degrees Fahrenheit are relatively tolerable and warm on our bodies. Anything above 100 degrees Fahrenheit can become dangerously hot, even burning the skin or causing rashes. Anything less than 90 degrees Fahrenheit is considered lukewarm.

4. We were lucky to find our pool to call our own. It was lukewarm at 88 and had slipped many people's minds. It was near the river's banks, with water flowing out and in. On the sides of our pool, there was a small streamlet.

5. I was one of those who, like many others, jumped at the chance to find another lone pool, only to be disappointed when I dipped my feet in because it was too hot to bear even for seconds. I even went in one of the river's hottest pools(113 degrees). Oh, no! My feet turned red, but those few moments taught me how temperatures could vary within a few meters.

I was also relieved that all of the other pools had a flat floor underneath because, while rolling your feet on the hot volcanic stones may appear to be nature's way of doing it, your feet may squirm on the touch if it's too hot.

6. Then, as the crowd thinned out by mid-afternoon, we hopped around different pools and got to see most of them. The pools along the sulphuric walls on the river banks, in my opinion, are scenic and have relatively warm water.

7. Mid-afternoon may be an excellent time to enjoy all pools; there is so much one can bathe before people begin to leave. The cocktails on-site are one-of-a-kind and delicious! They're also a little strong, but getting a little tipsy and relaxing is a great way to spend an afternoon.

8. After speaking with two locals in one of the pools, I discovered that Pagosa is an excellent gift for parents planning anniversary getaways. It drew visitors from all over the world, including Lithuania and Vietnam. Their children gave an elderly couple the Pagosa Experience, and they couldn't stop thanking them over and over.

9. Is it secure? Except for Pagosa, we were pleased with the mask compliance during Covid-19 exposures in all of Colorado. Even though the resort had mask compliance, the nature of the springs made it challenging to manage mask wear.

10. Inside the pools, masks are prohibited. Outside of it, on the walking pavement and elsewhere, we must wear masks. Even though most of us were hopping from one pool to the next, it wasn't easy for a few to be compliant. Fortunately, my beau and I did not catch Covid, but chances are slightly higher here than elsewhere.

Healing Waters Resort & Spa@ Pagosa | The Nude Bath Experience

This budget-friendly hotel where we stayed is centrally located in downtown Pagosa and across the street from the Springs. It is simple but well-equipped. With the pools, you can find a sweet spot. They felt more mineral-rich than the Springs, and the experience of the Clothing Optional Hot Springs was unique.

The primary swimming pool area has a pleasant temperature. The steam from the pool and the soothing touch of the water, and the beautiful sky above provide guests a truly private experience. The optional clothes pools offer different men and women bathing experiences.

I was initially terrified by the thought of going completely naked because, as Indians, we are not used to such things. However, after I let go of it all, I had a great time.

Beignets @ Pagosa | Best Place to Eat

There are a few good restaurants in Pagosa, but our favorite is The Lost Cajun. The friendly servers and boho Lousiana-style décor were our favorites. It brought back memories of our trip to New Orleans. We had Lobster Bisque and Beignet Bites as takeout, and they were both delicious.

My Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad Train Experience

Heritage Train Journeys are always one of a kind. Durango Train scenic ride takes you alongside the river gorge of the Animas River that flows parallel and mountains in the interiors of San Juan National Forests, said to be inaccessible by public transportation and hence virgin. It's story goes back to those times when gold and silver mine ores were hauled. Later it was used to transport Uranium during World War II, and it also got popular with Hollywood where few scenes were shot.

To us, on our visit, during this past fall, gave us colors to play from nature that definitely will make a great watercolor painting to get inspired from - the chuck of the steam train getting into the forests with blue-hued river smiling at us was nothing short of extraordinary. Durango Train Ride is a must do!

Just a quick rewind into where we had started. Last we talked about leaving Ouray. En route our road trip from Ouray to Rockwood Station in Durango via Silverton's Million Dollar Highway, we made several pitstops - whether they were to catch a glimpse of the waterfall next to the highway or to get awed by the bed of bright yellow flowers in the Valley.

Our reservation with the train was for a 12:15 pm departure and we had booked our tickets online.

There were two options to choose from - either we take the vintage coach or we take the open-air gondola. We rightly opted for the open-air gondola because it provided a great panoramic view.

These trains also run during winters and are called Casacade Canyon winter train. The glory of watching the snow on the cliffs, the frozen Animas river and the crisp air must be something else from the train.

What to expect at the Rockwood Station?

Usually trains run from Durango to Silverton, but during Covid, it is running between Rockwood to Silverton. The ride to-fro is 2 hours.

The Rockwood station has temporary setups such as a food truck, vault toilets, and a tent shed where information was being shared and the music was being played during our wait times.

At the information center, when you show them your tickets, they tell you your coach number.
The previous batch of passengers was disembarking during our visit. It is surprising to see the exit of cars running parallel to the train tracks.

The Train Experience

Masks needed to be worn at all times inside the train. The conductor comes and checks it.
Whichever side of the train you choose to sit on, you will get the view. The riverside is definitely more gorgeous, which would first be on your right and then on your left along the first leg of your journey, and then reverse, hence giving viewing angles to both sides of the passengers.

Is Ouray Hyped? | Box Canyon and Ouray Hot Springs

Sometimes it all boils down to making a choice. Between the touristic Telluride, the popular mountain town of Colorado, and a little offbeat Ouray also known as Switzerland of America, we chose Ouray from the word of mouth. I would be lying to myself if I say those heated public Ouray Thermal Pools weren't Instagram worthy, in fact making the perfect shot with the view of the mountains on a backdrop was easier, still, we weren't feeling it to the bone.

Because something about it was incredibly man-made and commercialized. Yet, we found our solace in our short hike to box canyon(A waterfall that comes from inside the Canyon) & the Ouray downtown & our walk along the Uncompahgre river situated next to our hotel stay.

Needless to say, the view of the 13000 feet of San Juan Mountains surrounding Ouray gives it a very hill station vibe.

Do these pools look like Hot Spings to you? Hmm...we thought so too. There were several pools with different temperatures, but these didn't woo us at all.

I think the most I enjoyed in Ouray was our stay at the charming Hot Springs Inn located adjacent to Uncompahgre river. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the river and strolling down the riverwalk was pretty easy and scenic too. The decor is very Scandinavian type, very artistic and we loved how a few pieces in the room gave us a 'straight out of a museum' vibe. The room was enormously big and very cozy. Due to Covid protocols, one can collect their packaged breakfast (which was very ordinary) but can also book their timed entry into their hot inflatable pools.

Ouray downtown is a small downtown with a few blocks surrounded by mountains. We especially loved the Thai food (both takeaway and dine-in) at Thai Chilli, and we loved the ice-cream delicacies of Mouses Chocolates & Coffee. There are a few breweries on these blocks, but little did we know that they were closing early and hence we missed entry.

Hiking wise, we did the easiest hike to Box Canyon waterfalls situated outside the city. The easiest hike down into the Canyon takes 15 minutes on the paved grilled steps. There, the roar of a waterfall from inside the canyon gives a very rushed water peek into from a side angle.

It was founded as a mining camp and helped the city of Ouray establish itself as a permanent community. Box Canyon is home to Box Canyon Falls, a 285 feet (87 m) waterfall, with quartzite walls that extend almost one hundred feet past the falls. Access to the canyon is through a short, 500 feet (150 m) foot trail to the base of the falls or a steep trail leading to the top of the falls. The admission fees is $5.

Another hike is towards the high bridge that is longer and steeper, but we did not go there. If you have time you can do the perimeter trail or if you have a day the blue lakes trail.

Do you see the cement wall on the side of the creek? Hot Springs that once surfaced here but now a pipe inside the vault carries the steaming 150 degree(F) water to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool.

The steady roar of the waterfalls can be heard year around. Did you know, that the force of the falls could provide power to the whole of Ouray? Here in this picture, is the old mining equipment left from the 1960's in the canyon.

During the summer months of June, the rare Black Swifts rests in their summer homes. Their nests are often seen camouflaged in the canyon walls.

So here are a few things to keep in mind when exploring Ouray:

The shower rooms have no curtains in the Restrooms inside Ouray Hot Springs.
Ouray Box Canyon closes at sharp 5 pm. She warned us, if we are left inside, we would be left inside.
Many restaurants and bars close early here, like around 8 pm. We are not sure if that was because of Covid, but it was very early to get in the bar even though the long queue outside Ouray Brewery was inviting us in.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison | Colorado

Before I visited the Black Canyon, I had never asked myself why Canyons were the way they were. But here, the colors spoke for themselves, proud and bold. Often shrouded in shadows, and barely receiving sunshine (parts of Canyon receive 30 minutes of sunshine throughout the day) due to steepness and depth; the name said it all. At its narrowest, it is 40 feet wide at the river. It's amazing how nature plays with color, the river also looks black from above, and the entire terrain looks as if God has painted it in 50 shades of Black and Grey!

So magnificent and distinctive does it look during Sunset that I wish I stayed more like one of the readers mentioned on the Facebook group. The sunsets make the north rim glimmer in hues of oranges at the top, while the rest remains black as the sun rays trying to find a way into the Canyon but the Canyon stands

put.

A part of me knew that spending so less time at this marvelous place would be a mistake, as there are couple of hiking trails and even camping in the area. I couldn't help but think how would it be down there, that we can see from above and admire or how different does it look during sunrise, if sunsets are so beautiful? Or as the sun rays, sun fights for its chance to peek in, and the canyons resists but by the time it's evening, them need a little warmth and shine too.

But going blindly by Facebook left us conflicted on which direction to move from after a point. When we googled 'Black Canyon of the Gunnison' on the map while driving from Aspen from somewhere in between, we were to make a choice - to head to north rim or the south rim? Oh, how have we forgotten Canyons have rims. And how foolish were we, that we thought we could get by without any research knowing that networks can be missing in some areas. Thankfully, we landed in the right rim easily accessible - the south rim.

How were these Canyons formed?

It took about 2 million years to shape the canyon as you see it today. If you could come back in another 2 million years, what do you think Black Canyon would look like?

Over a billion years ago, molten rock was squeezed into fissures forming the light-colored bands which thread Black Canyon’s otherwise dark walls. We were standing on one of these bands. As the hot fluid slowly cooled and hardened, minerals formed into crystals. On looking closely, one may even recognize flecks of Mica, Feldspar, Quartz and even Garnet. Those bands of lighter colored igneous rock - called pegmatite dikes - are more resistant to erosion than the dark gneisses(sounds like “nice-es”) into which they intrude.

Consequently, the pegmatite weathers more slowly than the gneiss. The vertical position of the dikes here, combined with their resistance to weathering, has produced the fin-like appearance of parts of the canyon walls. You will see pegmatite at nearly every overlook.

Swift water of the Gunnison river and abrasion from the sediment it carries are the chief cutting tools in the deepening of the Black Canyon but there are other forces important to the carving of the canyons. Moisture entering joins and fractures promote weathering.

South Rim Drive

The South Rim Drive is 7 miles from Tomichi Point to High Point, and has 12 overlooks.The South Rim Visitor Center, which features exhibits on the canyon, is located at Gunnison Point. As we drove from Gunnison Point to the High Point, we found ourself driving parallel to the canyon. This short drive is a beautiful drive.

As we reached the High Point, we found ourselves staring at 180 degree vista of the Canyon. To our right was the south rim. The south rim has eroded back farther than the north (to our left). The south rim faces north so it does not receive as much sun and does not dry out as quickly as the north rim. Since moisture is an important factor in erosion, a moist slope will tend to erode at a faster rate than a dry slope.

Thus, the canyon rims are gradually worn away. What the river can’t carry away accumulates as steel piles of talus against the canyon walls or creates rapids in the river.

The carving process has been slowed by the construction of the dams upstream. These dams hold back most of the sediment and most of the peak spring runoff, both of which are necessary for the river to deepen its bed effectively and carry off material eroded from the canyon walls.

The Canyons at the North Rim are steeper and hence fewer lights get in. That is also where, the road is less paved, and it's more primitive from what I have heard. South rim whereas, where we went, has paved roads, a visitor center, and a couple of vista points.

Our first stop was Tomichi Point. Tomichi Point gives us the first glance into the canyon. As we drove further we reached the South Rim Visitor Center. Gunnison Point is behind the South Rim Visitor Center. During our visit, it was already 6 pm, the Visitor Center was closed but the trail from the back was open. These are just a few stairs onto the vista point that gives you a panoramic view of the Canyon. A scenic drive to the High Point takes you to a few more vista points and these are even more beautiful.

Aspen | Maroon Bells and Crater Lake

Just as they say, sometimes it isn't our day. Yet sometimes, a mere peek-a-boo of sun from behind the mountains in a dried up Crater lake that we can walk on gives us a ray of hope. The hope that was met with an endearing silence as it thrashed when reflections on Maroon Bells did not form on moving waters just as they had said in numerous pictures on the internet. The twin peaks above 14,000 feet that are called bells still stood tall and mighty. Besides, Aspen had a strict mask mandate both indoors and outdoors, leaving no room for worry.

While Maroon Bells are said to be the most photographed place in Colorado, during our visit I was expecting the snippet from the internet that had built up my figment of imagination to come alive and the reflections of the bells to form an iconic picture just as they had said.

The Maroon Bells are two peaks of over 14,000 feet with a scenic viewing area. Located just a few feet away from the Parking Lot, it's the easiest accessible lake.

There are a couple of trails in and around Maroon Bells. We did the Crater Lake Trail and a little bit of Maroon Lake Scenic Trail.

How to get to Maroon Bells - Aspen Highlands?

Meanwhile Our stay in Mountain Chalet, Aspen was no less than impeccable. It is one of the few remaining old-time ski lodges in Aspen and the decor reminds me of those cute boutique hotels from Europe. I also loved, how kind their entire staff was, and breakfast was served early in the morning before our hikes. I also loved how conveniently located it was in the city center and the buses to Highlands (Buses to Castle Maroon) runs from Rubey Park Transit Center located outside the hotel.

We did take a little stroll in the evening in downtown Aspen. Surrounded by mountain on all sides, its a cute little place yet there was something very up class about Aspen. To me , from the outside, it felt like a posh town where vacationers come to unwind. There were numerous branded shops on the lanes (some very up class and hi end). It just gave the vibe of "Not just for common people".

The rules have been constantly changing but during our days of the visit, we had a prior booking of the Maroon Bells shuttle for 8:15 am.

The host during our stay informed us that she has been an avid hiker herself, and the lakes have dried up but is a beautiful hike nonetheless.

She also told us that the colors are pretty this time of the year here because there has been less rainfall but since there has been less rainfall, the lake has dried. That time we didn't pay much heed to her, because we were slightly hopeful that maybe not. She suggested we take the 7:30 am shuttle bus that leaves right outside from the hotel to Castle Maroon and we were glad we did exactly that.

The ready to order complimentary breakfast is phenomenal in this hotel! As we were getting ready to grab a bite before we board the bus, we were served Denver omelets, some fruits, a bagel with cheese, coffee, etc. The seating arrangements at the shuttle were also done keeping social distancing in mind.

As we reached the Aspen highlands, we went into the Aspen Highlands Center and got the original tickets from our mailed ones. Thereafter we waited for the bus.

The ranger informed us, that there might be Moose on the trail, and wished us luck as we proceeded forward. There was social distancing on the buses and had a compulsory mask mandate, and she herself directed us to seats she allowed us.

The hike to Crater Lake

Let me begin by saying what the kid who was hiking with his parents on the route said to us, "The lake is dry", which also his parents reiterated further adding "But the hike is beautiful, you must do it!".

Yes guys, that's a dried up Crater Lake I am standing on...

I am not sure if the trail is kept primitive on purpose, but its a very unique hike that not only gains constant elevation initially taking us through forested areas and then through heaps of stones and broken rocks. At times I felt if it was an avalanche aftermath. All I would suggest is at times one has to be a little careful, but not enough to keeping us strained and stressed. I mean, there was not once that we had to bend over.

There came one point on the trail where we had no one ahead of us in vision nor behind us. And there were two diversions to take. Since there wasn't any signboard we simply chose to follow the sight of the bells ahead.

Even though the Crater Lake was all dried up, it made for a great picnic spot. And watching the sunshine over the barren land where land existed was spectacular. On our way back, just before we were nearing the end of the hike, we took the scenic trail route and came by the small lake. Overall, a great experience.

At Twin Lakes Recreational Area at San Isabel National Forest

Honey Cheese Bread anyone? Almond Soda anyone? Pizza made of dough with locally sourced honey anyone? Gold Mining history anyone? That's Idaho Springs for you. As we swooned over the delectable food Idaho Springs had that we treasured, a part of us hoped that we had time to discover the real treasure Idaho Springs is famous for - Gold. Idaho Springs spelled “Idahoe” means Gem of the Mountains and “Springs” means Hot Springs. A cute little town that titillates our curiosity as soon as land our gaze onto the big banner board that says "Where the Gold-rush began?"

We all know how major cities in California has boomed due to Gold Rush in the 80's. Cities such as San Francisco prospered during those times. Colorado wasn't very far either. This is a great video to know on America's Gold history.

It would have been a dream to have stuck Gold in those days when Gold may have been plenty. They say that the first sight of the discovery of Gold in Colorado was by George Jackson who discovered it right off the Cold Creek River. A great deal of Gold was also discovered in the rocks inside the mountains and the might Argo mill was created to extract gold out of the water-laden mountains making the task easier. If one has time, they can also visit a few mills in the area - Stanley and Phoenix. Usually, the tour comprises of explanation of various processes of God Mining during the 1800's by the tour guide and Gold Panning.

A part of me still wonders if locals secretly find Gold there to date, or did we unintentionally miss landing on a big stone of Gold that could not only buy us the food but our entire stay and travel.

Sadly for us, our lack of research and lack of time both resulted in exploring just the one aspect that we dug into as our hungry tummies rumbled after our early morning drive from Rocky Mountain National Park to Idaho Springs. As we walked on Miner street that had all these restaurants and cute little shops, we could help but love the old charm these places still have.

One such was Beau Jo's. Recommended to us online by Facebook Groups on US travel and as said to be popular with locals and tourists alike, their Colorado style Pizza and Honey Cheese Bread was the best. The Pizza was huge and could serve 3 people. The decor was quintessential Colorado - with skis and skateboards hanging from the walls and Gold Mining equipment and vehicles. Down the street is Tommy Knockers where you get local beers and soda. Definitely worth the try!

Fact: Right at the entrance of Idaho springs (and behind Miner Street) is the parking lot. The parking is free for 1 hour. And then for the next 1 hour, it's $2.

Aspen via Independence Pass

When Google flashes that the route is closed, and the route is open indeed, there is a gift wrapped in what could have been a misery had it been closed. Before we were leaving from Rocky Mountain National Park, we checked onto our phones the directions to Independence Pass which purposely detoured us via Vail and Glenwood Springs letting us skip Independence Pass altogether and taking a longer route.

Our inquisitiveness and Google's stubbornness on road closure left us confused. We chose to ask the rangers who also were not sure because often we view Google maps as God, especially when we are in a new place, and that's our only savior for directions. The local website Cotrip that informs travelers on road closures, maintenance, and constructions, also did not have any information leaving us to taking a chance if we wished to do it at all.

Independence Pass

Located at 12,095 ft on the Continental Divide, this popular route is Cyclist's Favourite. The route to Independence Pass takes us through Curvy roads with jaw-dropping valley drops and views. There were countless times that we had paused to enamor our vision with a vast vista that it gave us to ponder on.

As we drove from Idaho Springs to Independence Pass, we also found that there was a shift in perspective of things - RMNP and Silverthorne were snow-clad mountains, while this had more trees, aspens plus the mountains.

It makes us think that who may be the ones who made the graffiti pole by the continental divide sign but that adds colors onto our already picturesque selfie. A short flat paved trail leads us to various vista points of the pass including the near view of the mountains and the vastness of the valley.

Leadville - Copper Mountain - Twin Lakes - Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway

The Top of the Rockies Byway travels 75 miles starting in Aspen, traveling through Leadville to either Minturn or Copper Mountain, literally at the Top of the Rockies. We took the route opposite as we were going towards Aspen, than from Aspen. For us it took us via Copper Mountain, Leadville and Twin Lakes.

Once booming mining towns, Leadville and Twin Lakes still stand centers of Mining. The National Mining Hall of Fame is a museum located in Leadville, Colorado, United States, dedicated to commemorating the work of miners and people who work with natural resources.

At the Valley of Ghosts, In the late 1800's this valley busted with the commotion of three mining towns. Fortunes were made and dreams were crashed in the ores hauled from mountains. By 1950. the area was deserted as the mining boom had busted. The valley is now filled with tailing from the Climax mine - a fit burial for the towns born out of mining.

Twin Lakes in particular stunned us. The name Twin Lakes comes from 'two alpine lakes' on the base of gigantic mountains. These lakes were carved by Glaciers during the Ice age and not only makes a great hault for visitors but also a great recreational area for those who wish to go down by the sandy beach by the lake.

Now, this was another hidden gem route expressed to us by members of a Facebook Group who suggested us that we take the drive via "The Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway". When we enter on Google, it shows no results.

Hike into Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lakes | Bear Lake Trailhead

Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado is scenic!

Nothing is more soothing to our eyes than the crisp sunshine reflecting on the Emerald Blue Alpine Lake with Winds whispering in our ears, that nature indeed is more powerful than us, no matter how much we pretend otherwise. Surrounded by tall peaks at Emerald to Dreamlike waterscape of Dream Lake to lush Lilly pads of Nymph Lake, the hike takes us through a gradual steady climb from Start to Nymph and then takes us through a comparatively moderate climb from Dream to Emerald.

If one has to do just one hike in the Rocky Mountain National Park, then it has to be the hike to the three lakes that starts at Bear Lake Trailhead - Nymph, Dream, Emerald. It is a very popular hike in the park and is about 3.6 miles roundtrip. I would grade it as easy till Nymph Lake, then gets a little moderate till Dream Lake and is moderate till Emerald Lake. It roughly would take you around 2-4 hours based on how much you choose to stop.

Fact: Alertness becomes part of the trail especially during pockets where trails had ice sheet over it, which has a tendency to make us slip, or skid. You wouldn't need spiked shoes though. These sections are few. And one can also bypass them in a lot of places, by taking a little detour on the mud(or where there is less ice). We also observed that during morning hours there was more ice as compared to the afternoon when the ice had started melting already due to rising temperatures.

Anyone can do this hike. It's very family-friendly, till the first two lakes. And then, if you have kids who have been on hikes before, Dream to Emerald is moderately challenging but nothing that you will find over strenuous. There are, however, lots of stairs to climb on this trail. And Emerald Lake was chilly cold and windy.

The trailhead to Bear Lake Nature Trail(0.8-mile roundtrip, 9475 feet, Easy)

The trailhead to Nymph Lake (1.2-mile roundtrip, 262 feet elevation gain, Easy)

The trailhead to Dream Lake (2.2-mile roundtrip, 426 feet elevation gain, Easy)

The trailhead to Emerald Lake (3.6 -mile roundtrip, 702 feet elevation gain, Moderate)

Free Shuttles or Car?

With the convenience of free shuttles till the trailhead, one does not have to bother about parking their car at the parking space which can get busy and unavailable during peak hours. From our campground, we took the shuttle to Park n Ride and from Park n Ride till Bear Lake Trailhead. The buses run very frequently. Also, a few people on the internet had suggested to us, that should we decide to take our car, post 3 pm would be easier on us, as folks who have had come for morning hikes may have already left.

The Hike

The first lake that you will witness right away on your slight right of the trailhead would be Bear Lake.

On your left, there would be two diversions - one that leads to Alberta Falls, and another that would lead to Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lakes. If you have time after completing the three lakes, you can come back to the trailhead and proceed towards Alberta falls if you wish.

The hike to the 3-lakes is a gradual incline and most of the trail is paved. The first lake we have is Nymph Lake ringed by water lilies which during our time was partly frozen.

The next would be dream lake, which seemed to be the biggest of the three lakes, and is also located at the base of Harlett Peak making it incredibly scenic. One must be careful of those plank bridges and steps during snow and ice as they tend to get slippery, and two people needed to be rescued thereafter they fell and couldn't get up on their own. Most of the snow had melted during our visit, however, the iced-sheets were apparent on stepped paved trails, and most of us were careful enough to not slide in them.

Further ahead is the Emerald Lake. I really loved how dreamy it can get when one leaves Dream lake towards the Emerald as initially, it takes us alongside the Dream side and then into the paved steps.

The closer we get to Emerald Lake, the mountains look bigger and there are certain angles where one can pose and they would look right behind us. As we reached Emerald Lake, it got very windy and cold. I would say since Emerald Lake is smaller and surrounded by mountains that were snow-covered during our visit, it looks more dramatic in pictures than the dream lake.

The hues of Emerald lake are clear Emerald and I guess that's where it got its name from. The tree branches at random places make for a great photo op. We really liked how the sun played with the shades of green in the lake and make it sparkle!

Facts: Please do not feed crumbs to the blue colored bird that is very common in the area as they tend to follow people in hope and that's not a very healthy sign. I saw kids do that, and felt really bad, as bread ain't nice to the birds in the long term. All in all, a must-do place!

Rocky Mountain National Park | Hikes, Drives, Camping

Elks basking in Snowfall and Sunshine, the Blue and Emerald hues of the Alpine lakes, the Oranges of the Aspens still tugging at the trees while the snow engulfs it, the roaring unprecedented Snowfall at the Trail Ridge Road while we drive past in mist and fog, the howling of the winds and clear night sky at the Moraine Park Campground as we camped, and the great food at Estes Park. If Rocky Mountain National Park had a nickname for it, it would be an 'Inspiration' park.

2 years back, when we had gone to Glacier National Park in Montana, we were all gaga over the humongous mountains, the unperturbed wildlife, and the various hikes there. Compared to that, my hubby had the same doubt that I had, "Will Rocky Mountain cut it?".

Drive from Silverthorne to Rocky Mountain National Park

As we started our drive from Silverthorne to Rocky Mountain National Park, the surer we got that we have much more to see and experience than we had thought. Not only did we pass by randomly lined river basins but also witnessed morning smoke emanating from one of the rivers that gave us an idea of what the majority of Colorado was about.

It was about experiencing the unpredictability, in a place so accessible that many chose to do vacation here. Further along the route, we passed through Grand Lake, where winds welcomed us, and even though our hearts were in trepidation if fires have had affected any of these routes, we sighed in relief when we saw the first entrance on RMNP.

Trail Ridge Road in Snow

As we reached the entrance, the ranger politely said to us that we need to hurry to our Moraine Park Campground before road closures at Trail Ridge due to heavy snow. We were caught unawares because as per Google, the possibility of snow at RMNP was meager at noon, but it ended up heavy snowing the entire day.

Alpine Visitor Center

Facts: During our dates (11th Oct, 12th Oct), RMNP had limited timed entry. But since we had booked Moraine Park campsite, that part was covered. We just had to pay for the entry fees of the National Park. We did book our campsite a week before our visit. It was showing unavailable at all times but the more we refreshed the page and searched, we ended up finally finding one site and booked it.

What we liked the most about the Trail Ridge Road was just how dense the forests got into the valley and just how scenic this route was. The drive into the trail ridge road during heavy snow at a higher elevation near the Alpine visitor center wasn't an easy feat. We couldn't stop at most vista points. Not much was visible anyway in the snow fog but we did see a few travelers struggling to catch a glimpse if they got lucky. Since we had to be on the East side of the park before closures, we drove without a pause.

By the time we reached our campsite, the trail ridge road got closed not only for the day but stayed closed for the next 2 days. We had a pretty narrow escape at that. Thereafter, we ended up going to the Beaver Visitor Center located on the east side of the park after we set our camps. They suggested to us that we can head to Lily Lake trail if we wish to do it.

Facts:

No campfires were allowed at the time of our visit.
Estes Park Visitor Center remained closed on all days of our visit.
There were plenty of Elks in the area. The meadow near our campground had sightings every day.
Estes Park is a great area for good food (Notchstop bakery, Nepal Cafe were great!)
Lily Lake looks very different on non-snowy days. It is a popular site nonetheless.

Our camping experience at Moraine Park Campground

We camped at RMNP on the nights of 11th and 12th Oct, and if you ask me whether it is advisable to camp at that time or even this time of the year, I would suggest yes, and no. Yes, because it's very cheap and inside the park. No, because it depends on your temperature tolerance level to freezing temperatures at night. I would be lying if I say, the temperatures and the howling winds did not deter us. Admittingly so, these are part and parcel of camping but be sure to carry adequate blankets during this season. You may need it not only here but while camping at Great Sand Dunes.

Facts: The good part also was, the toilets were clean. The campsite also had shuttle bus stoppages that took us to trailheads.
