I'll admit that this is one of the Holy Trinity Disney musicals for me so I'm super excited about the show. This rated G, Academy Award winning movie should not be missed, especially when you are allowed to belt out the tunes while the movie is on the big screen!

Sorry that I'm late in getting the events planner together this weekend. I've not been sleeping well, have been working a lot this week, and have been slammed with scouting events and activities. In a word I'm pooped and am now paying the price with exhaustion and an apparent cold. Yup I'm a mom and that's what happens to us. It's inevitable.

So here is a VERY brief list of some things to do in Ann Arbor today and tomorrow. I promise to get some more free events posted soon, but for now this Ann Arbor mom is off to grab a shot of NyQuil!

Perspective is Everyting: Child Sleeping in Car in Winter

As I arrived at work this morning I was very surprised and angered to see a child in the car next to where I parked, huddled over, sleeping. Temperatures were in the mid 20's, and although the kid was wearing a knit cap and warm coat, the car was not running. More importantly though, their parent was nowhere to be found! I was furious.

I stood there for what felt like an eternity, vacillating over what to do. Then I marched into my office to call the police.

Once inside, I took a few breaths and observed the car for 2-3 minutes, all the while pacing by the window, and venting to my co-workers. How could this person be so irresponsible? What terrible parent would leave a sleeping child in their car in the middle of winter? At that point I couldn't take it, and decided to walk back out to the car.

At fist I couldn't decide if I should knock on the window. What if I woke the child? Wouldn't I really scare her? So instead I stepped towards the car for a closer look and take action...
I'm glad I did too. The "sleeping child" turned out to be a knit cap pulled over a bag of items.

I walked back into the office just in time to have my boss ask if he needed to call the police...I guess one never quits being a parent.

Lesson of the day: Perspective is everything!

Parents Night Out: God of Carnage at Performance Network

On Friday night I got to experience a rare treat with my spouse - a DATE! Earthshattering I know. It seems we haven't dated much since... Well since we dated, and even then we were both homeowners and homebodies! So when I was given tickets to see God of Carnage at the Performance Network (120 E Huron St., Ann Arbor) I happily accepted.

I wasn't familiar with the storyline, but apparently is it based on a recently released movie, “Carnage.” Many of the audience members were murmuring about the similarities after the lights came up. The play though is about two couples, who meet at one of their homes to discuss a playground altercation between their boys. As the evening progresses, the couples have a civilized battle of wits that devolves into a hilariously chaotic evening.

I was told to expect a "comedy of (bad) manners will change the way you look at polite conversation" but in sitting through the play I had to laugh knowing that I have "seen" glimmers of this type of parenting in some folks I have come across.

Typically the Ann Arbor Mom blog covers "family" themed events and activities, however getting mom and dad out is alos a big part of parenting. After all if mama's happy...

God of Carnage contains adult themes and language, so its not a kids activity, but the show, which is superbly acted, is a nic night out. God of Carnage runs at the Performance Network through February 19. If however you can't get away for a parents night out before then, this is the 30th Anniversary Season of Performance Network, so there is bound to be another opportunity to experience great theatre in Ann Arbor!

I like to think of God of Carnage as expressing the though “how far would you go if someone hurt your kid?” So, how far would YOU go?

Weekend Event Round-Up: Feb 3-5

Since last Saturday at 2:30 a.m., I have spent the week cooped up in the house with feverish kids with strep throat, so I am VERY tempted to run crazy this weekend. (Of course that would likely be without the kids.) Which is really great too, considering the many fun, free events happening around Ann Arbor. Lot's of free craft activities, events and the library and even some stargazing!
So take a look at the weekend planner to see what might be in store for you and your family.

Friday, February 3

The youngest family members will enjoy celebrating at Elmo's Birthday at the Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti MI). From 10:30 a.m.-noon, join in on a fun party that will include a story, DVD, songs, craft, and refreshments.
In the evening, families might want to see stars of another kind while enjoying a Field Trip to the Stars at the EMU Planetarium and Observatory (402 Sherzer Hall, Eastern Michigan University 124 College Pl, Ypsilanti) at 7:00 p.m. Families will find free admission, however it is best to call to pre-register for the free event, as space is limited 734-487-1849. Tour EMU's brand new planetarium then take a short walk to the Sherzer Observatory to see what’s happening in the real sky. Tour led by Norbert Vance, Director of Sherzer Observatory. Meet at the EMU Planetarium, parking is available at southwest corner of the EMU campus, Washtenaw at Oakwood St, Lot G, for $1 per hour.

Free kids crafts are a great way to stay busy this weekend too!

The Home Depot Kids Building Workshop is also this Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. This months project is a cute heart box.
Do you have a teen that is interested in writing? Why not have them join in the New Point Learning (2216 S. Main St., Ann Arbor) Winter Writing Workshop and Contest. The event runs 10:00 a.m.-noon . A few weeks back I mentioned the fun Amigurumi Club at the YDL that is for teens. It will be hosted again at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
Yesterday's post talked about the free Lego Friends event at Toys R Us at noon too.
Maybe you or your child is interested in comic books. Then be sure to stop at the Sports Cards, Memorabilia, and Comics Show at Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) from noon-5:00 p.m. You will find free admission to the show where comic book dealers, collectors, hobbyists, and casual fans are welcome to buy, sell, and trade their sports cards, memorabilia, merchandise, and comic books.
Teens have another great event this weekend too. On Saturday at 2:00 p.m. they can watch the movie What's Eating Gilbert Grape? at Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) then check out the book, because a few weeks later there will be a discussion of that same book and movie! Teens can talk about books made into movies and whether or not directors can translate your favorites into film.
Do you have a budding entertainer on your hands, kids and teens can participate in Kid's Open Stage at Oz Music (1920 Packard St., Ann Arbor) the first Saturday of every month a 4:00 p.m.
If the weather is still nice, how about a Twilight Hike at West Lake Preserve? From 5:00-6:30 p.m. enjoy some “end of the day” winter quiet in nature. We’ll set a goal of hiking to the lake edge, where we will stop, rest and have a hot drink under the winter twilight sky. Be sure to dress so that you will be warm.

The warm weather has made many of of consider spring, especially Tiger's Spring Training, so why not get a jump on things and have Breakfast with PAWS at St. Mary's Catholic Parish (10601 Dexter Pinckney Rd., Pinckney). On Sunday starting at 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., the St Mary’s Men’s Club in Pinckney is sponsoring "Breakfast with PAWS". The free event (donations are welcome however!) includes a delicious menu of fried or scrambled eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, French toast, pancakes, quiche, ham, pork sausage, and of course our renowned “waffle station”. Get those cameras ready for an great family event.
Do you have a crafty kid? There are several free events Sunday for them to enjoy. Make A Lion Mask For Lantern Festival at Ann Arbor District Library (3333 Traverwood Dr., Ann Arbor) at 2:00 p.m. All supplies are provided free for this craft. Or head over to Michael's Crafts (3655 Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor) where kids ages 3+ can make their own Foam Valentine's Mailbox at 1:00 p.m. (Supplies free with purchase of mailbox) or they can create a free custom Valentine's Day card at 2:00 p.m.
How about getting out and about while the weather is still mild? From 2:00-4:00 p.m. the kids will enjoy learning about Tracks, Scat and More at Brauer Preserve! Learn how to identify many of the signs that animals leave behind. Be sure to dress warmly for this hike; we will stop often to look at things on the ground/in the snow.
Want to begin liberating your child in the kitchen? Then why not bring them to the Cooking with Your Kids event at Pittsfield Grange (3337 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd., Ann Arbor). At 2:00 p.m. for only $15 for one adult and one child (for adult with 2-3 children $20) kids ages 7 and older can learn to make a one-skillet meal (salsa skillet meal) with mom or day. Winter Break Camps in Ann Arbor: 2012

Many of the area schools have days off or the entire week off school in mid-February (Feb. 18-26). D0 you already have plans for your kids when there is no school? Have you found winter break camps or events to keep the kids busy? Here are some fun events for the kids during midwinter break.

Creativity Camp at the Ann Arbor Art Center allows kids ages 5-12 to spend a week exploring the world of patterns, people and places. Learn to paint, draw, sculpt and learn about the decorative arts and cultures of the world. There will be a field trip to visit Ann Arbor galleries or a museum and each day will include 30 minutes of kids yoga and stretching. At the end of the camp, the children will hold an exhibition and reception for their families.

Want to play some hoops or learn about astronomy? Camps at the Ann Arbor Community Education & Recreation are geared for kids in grades 1-6. Or play soccer during a midwinter break camp at the World Wide Sports Center or play soccer or basketball at High Velocity Sports in Canton . Kids can participate in half or full day camp programs during break.

For the nature lover, kids can head to the winter break camps at the Leslie Science and Nature Center. School break camps there are for kids in grades K-5 and allow kids to explore the forest, fields, and trails or sled down the snowy slopes.

The sun may not be shining but I know many Ann Arbor area parents are already beginning to plan what to do this summer when the sun DOES come out and the kids are out of school for summer vacation. I'd love to think this weekend will be quiet, but for my family and I anyway, it will be anything but! We have our Cub Scout Pinewood Derby races, are heading to the Fox Theatre to see Sesame Street Live and my son is ramping up to be part of a Science Olympiad team for his school. Somewhere in there too will be cleaning house, doing laundry, working AND sleeping. Is a parents job ever done? Never mind, don't bother answering that one!

Free Kids Workshops at the Pittsfield Grange

There is a new program for kids and their parents starting at the Pittsfield Township Grange (3337 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd., Ann Arbor). The Grange Junior Maker, will be a monthly free workshop where the kids will build electronics, robotics and wood. Their first project however will be building a workbench for use in future projects.

Please bring your tools and any supplies you would like to donate at 10:00 a.m., Saturday January 28.

'Chillin' at the Mills' Offers Plenty of Family Fun

Chillin' at the Mills, a yearly event at the Hudson Mills Metropark (8801 N Territorial Rd., Dexter) offers families the perfect opportunity to enjoy winter and all it's spleandor. The event, on January 28 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., allows families to participate in a variety of outdoor activities including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding and other winter activities (weather dependant). Then if things get a bit too chilly, the kids can warm up indoors with a craft activity and hot chocolate.

Free Science Workshops for the Family

Family Reading & Science Workshop at the Museum of Natural History.
This year, the free event will teach kids about science and their bodies.

Starting this weekend, the University of Michigan Natural History Museum is holding a series of free Family Reading & Science Workshops in public libraries all over Southeastern Michigan. The fun, family workshops about science are geared for children ages 6-11. This year's theme will aloow kids and their parents to explore the Evolution and Health and what it means to their bodies.

The first workshop at the museum will be held January 22 at 1:00 p.m.. "How YOU work: What are made of and what do your vital signs mean?" will help youth and tweens explore their bodies, DNA and better understand their individual vital signs.

This weekend is full of fun events for the family. Luckily the weather is cooperating for events like the 2012 Plymouth Ice Festival or Milan's Ice Sculpture Festival, making it perfect for spectacular ice sculptures. My kids LOVE watching the carvers change a block of ice into something amazing and it's an event that should not be missed. Friday, January 20

Stop by the Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) for "Making Tracks" at 2:00 p.m. The free program from the Leslie Science and Nature Center will visit and bring some animals to discuss how animals survive during winter, including migration and hibernation.
The 2012 Plymouth Ice Festival runs throughout the weekend. Friday 3:00-9:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Want some family time? How about visiting the New Zoo Play Cafe (1834 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) for Family Night from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Don't worry about dinner as pizza will be available for $1/slice and of course the entertainment is taken care of. The event will also feature story time at 5:00 p.m.

Saturday, January 21

The 9th Annual Thurston (2300 Prairie, Ann Arbor) School Chess Tournamentt runs from 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Check out some great chess playing from students in grades K-8.
Head over to the Milan's Ice Sculpture Festival on Saturday 10:00-5:00 p.m. or Sunday noon-5:00 p.m. for a lot of fun and amazing ice sculptures.
For outdoor fun, there are two separate opportunities for your family to enjoy a guided hike at the County Farm Park. There is a storytime hike at 10:30 a.m. and a second field hike at 3:30 p.m.
I still want to borrow a teen for the Amigurumi Workshop at the YDL, so if anyone has one I can borrow let me know. The free workshop start at 11:00 a.m.
Want to experience some spectacular stories? The Performance Network's Saturday Series for Young Audiences is featuring LarRon Williams at 1:00 p.m.
Celebrate the Chinese New Year at the YDL-Michigan at 2:00 p.m. Fun for the whole family - Find stories, a fan dance demo, Chinese yo-yo demonstrations, crafts and children’s activities, culminating with the Lion Dance.

Does your family enjoy music? Why not experience the Dexter Community Orchestra? They'll be performing at the Dexter District Library at 2:00 p.m.
Kids can learn about their bodies and DNA during the Family Science and Reading Workshop at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History. The free workshop is at 1:00 p.m. but does require pre-registration at 734-764-0480.
For the math fan in your home, Mathnasium of Ann Arbor is hosting a free event at the Ann Arbor District Library at 1:00 p.m. Kids will play math games for prizes and actually enjoy learning!

Detroit's Most Valuable Blogger 2011

Wow, I just realized that the blog actually was awarded something; AnnArborMom.com is one of the CBS Detroit's Most Valuable Bloggers (Lifestyle category). Pretty cool huh?

It really helps to know that my work isn't in vain. The blog was born out of the love of finding great free events and low cost activities for my family when we were out-of-work. Then I had so many friends asking about where I heard about events that I simply started the blog!

I'd love to see the blog grow and expand without moving too far from it's original purpose. My kids are growing and changing their wants and desires, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't provide helpful information to Ann Arbor families. So here's to another great year!

I feel blessed and humbled that someone noticed the blog and nominated it. I suppose the way to say it best is "thank YOU!"

Stretch Your Math Noodle at the AADL

This Sunday, January 22, 1:00-3:00 p.m., kids in grades K-5 can relax and participate in a fun, free Ann Arbor District Library event (343 South Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor 48104) that focuses on math.

The event, sponsored by Mathnasium of Ann Arbor will allow the kids to play games with a chance to win great prize while pumping up their math muscles. The kids will practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills through fun games and team competitions that include learning geometry through Tangram puzzles!

So bring the kid-o's and let them stretch their noodle. They'll have so much fun they won't even realize they are learning something.

Nature Stories and a Hike for The Family

Here is a great "get-outdoors" activity for this weekend!

On Saturday, January 21, 10:30 a.m. - Noon, kids 4 and older can enjoy Nature Stories and a hike at the County Farm Park (2230 Platt Rd., Ann Arbor). Kids will enjoy stories about nature then head outdoors to explore the winter world. After the hike, everyone will come inside for a hot drink.

Be sure to pre-register 971-6337, x334 and dress for the weather! The free event will begin in the Field Operations Bldg. (bldg. closest to the playground!) at the Platt Rd. entrance.

Later that same afternoon at 3:30 p.m., the rest of the family can also hike and enjoy the park during a January Field Exploration. Head out to explore the open habitats of County Farm Park to see what we can find; we’ll look for winter birds and mammals, look for animal tracks, do some winter wildflower identification, look for berries and interesting seeds and more!

Dress for being warm while we are outside. Hot drinks inside after the hike!

Kids Only Bookclub

Want you child to read more? What about improving their reading comprehension? Then consider having your child join an area "Kids Book Club". Luckily the area offers several to choose from for the beginning reader through to the very experienced teens! Check out the many choices available to your child.

At the Ypsilanti District Library (229 West Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti), kids in grades 3-5 will meet at 7:00 p.m. one Tuesday each month for a snack and discussion. The free event does require registration though 482-4110 x1390.

How is your weekend shaping up? Have any plans with the kids? I'll be laying kind of low since I broke my arm this last week. But that won't totally stop me.

Saturday, January 14

Free Science workshop for kids in grades K-5 at the Ann Arbor District Library at 10:00 a.m. (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) and 2:00 p.m. (3333 Traverwood Dr., Ann Arbor). During the free event, kids will find out what they are made of.
Kids can build a castle during the January Lowe's Build and Grow Workshop at 10:00 a.m.
Older kids and teens can create their own custom hurricane lantern at the Ypsilanti District Library at 2:00 p.m.
Teens and their parents can learn about Solar Energy at the Ypsilanti District Library (Michigan Ave.) at 3:00 p.m. Discover how solar energy works and learn how to provide photovoltaic solar power for your home.

Events: Celebrate MLK 2012

In Ann Arbor, the celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. provides families with several free and educational programs. From library events to musical performances to speeches and other free events; there will be several well-run programs for everyone in the family to enjoy.

The Ypsilanti District Library will have two MLK Celebrations on Monday, January 16. At 1:00-3:00 p.m. at YDL Michigan (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti) or at YDL Whittaker (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) 5:30-8:00 p.m. families can celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. with music, a movies and children's crafts!

At the Michigan branch, families can hear local musicians Kojo ‘Sankofa’ and Nehanda Rasheedah Gyan-Apenteng, playing soulful African percussion while the Whittaker branch will host patriotic freedom songs from the Erickson Excellence Ensemble at 6:30 p.m.

The Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) is also hosting a free event at 2:00-3:00 p.m. Teens in grades 4-12 are encouraged to join Join Jeff Kass from the Neutral Zone for a poetry program on Civil Rights, Equality, Peace and Justice to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.

If you'd prefer to experience the Life of Martin Luther King Jr. through music, head over to Hill Auditorium (825 N. University Ave., Ann Arbor) for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Concert - The Call to Sacrificial Service. Admission to the 2:00 p.m. concert is free and features performances from the Chamber Choir.

In the evening, Trinity Episcopal Church (11575 Belleville Rd., Belleville) is hosting a dramatic Dramatic performance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches at 7:00 p.m. The event "The dream Lives On" is a joyful celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and contains excerpts from his well known speeches as well as powerful music and audience participation.

Another event in the evening is being planned by One World One Family at the Chelsea District Library at 7:00 p.m. The program will be celebrating the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King Jr. through music.

Kids Create a Hurricane Lantern

On Saturday, January 14, kids and teens, ages 7-18, can create their own colorful hurricane lantern at the Ypsilanti District Library (8795 MacArthur Blvd., Ypsilanti) at 2:00 p.m. Decorate a glass jar with supplies provided by YDL. Create a stylish handle with colored wire and beads. It makes a neat night-light when you put in a no-flame candle which we will provide.

Registration for this free event is required and only available to YDL cardholders. For more information call 482-4110 X1391.

Families can will find stories, fan dance demo, Chinese yo-yo demonstrations, crafts and children’s activities, culminating with the Lion Dance at the free event.

The Chinese New Year event takes place at the Ypsilanti Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) on Sunday, January 15 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Don't worry, if you miss the event, it will be repeated on Saturday, January 21 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Ypsilanti Library Michigan Avenue branch!

Kids Building Workshops

Being cooped up all winter does not mean the kids can't have fun. I especially like it when they go elsewhere for fun, as it keeps the house MUCH cleaner! For grade school aged kids that like to build there are several upcoming free kids building clinics.

The Lowe's Build and Grow clinics being offered this month allow the kids to build their own castle (January 14) or a dinosaur creature called a build-a-saurus (January 28). Just be sure to register early as the clinics often fill up quickly!

Home Depot also offers kids building workshops with the next being on February 4 when your child can build a cute kepsake box. You do not need to register, but be sure to attend the workshop early or the materials will be gone! Home Depot kids clinics are offered the first Saturday of each month 9:00 a.m. - noon.
