No one in Christchurch gets to forget but I had forgotten. Watching 'When a City Falls' and I am reminded of how much I've forgotten. All the pictures, tweets, blogs and stories that people shared in the immediate aftermath of the quake on February 22 2011. All of the first hand experiences shared by family and friends down there. All of the raw anger, grief, fear, frustration and humour. The sand castles made from the dry liquefaction. The teams of rescuers who came from overseas. The broken Star Wars glasses. The garden loos. The grim faces. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">I feel bad for forgetting. I know life moves on but far away in my safe city, not living it on a daily basis, I'd forgotten. And I shouldn't have forgotten.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">We shouldn't forget because what we saw were people being really, unbelievably, gut-wrenchingly human. As we watched from a distance, some of the most extraordinary examples of kindness, strength and humour stared us back in the face. And we shouldn't forget.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">It's not that we should dwell in the past. I know plenty of people in Christchurch who just want to get on, rebuild, and move forward. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">We shouldn't forget because people have the capacity to be amazing; doing things for each other that they never thought they'd have to. Caring about people in a way that demonstrates their unique capacity to give a shit. That is what we shouldn't forget. I had forgotten but I am reminded now. I don't know, I never had to live through it, I witnessed it all through the stories, pictures, tweets and blogs that people shared. And we were lucky they did and we're lucky to be reminded. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Potentially a premature post on the second most exciting thing to happen today (the first was the installation of a new coffee machine at the office) but I just changed my Twitter bio and this post seems to fit with my new brand. Feel free to bookmark this and when we're all saying ‘He's in my <em>Orienteers who like to yodel</em> circle on Google +’, you can throw rocks at me. I am sure far more technomologically and socially savvy people than I are expressing qualified opinions all over the interwebs about Google + right now, but I am also sure eighty five percent of my Facebook friends don’t even know anything about it.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">That’s because eighty five percent of my friends on Facebook know Google only as <a href="http://www.google.com">www.google.com</a>, the address they type into their Internet Exporer browser bar to find out how to make creme brulee, or where to stay in London. Most of them have no idea that Google is anything other than that. Most don’t go to Google Maps to find a place, they ‘Google’ the address and a map comes up like magic. They might have a Gmail address but for them, it's an email address and nothing else. Even those with smart arse Android phones will probably still be using them to check their Facebook pages, with no idea that the platform is powered by Google.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Most don’t know there are other browsers, and on all the sites I run analytics on, those using Chrome as their browser, account for between five and ten percent of all visitors.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Most have never heard of Google Docs or know that you can choose to search for stuff within blogs. Most have no idea that it’s an entire suite of stuff, a way of life, a pledge of allegiance and preference.  </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">A quick look round Google + suggests it has some good features and addresses some of the stuff we love to hate about Facebook. It is also tied to, well Google, which undoubtedly represents a powerful and impressive collision of social and search. I’m sure those of us who jump on board will be tutu-ing around on it for a while and maybe we'll like it and use it a lot and it will awesome and super cool. But and this is the big BUT, I just don’t see it attracting the critical mass it requires to seriously rival or usurp Facebook.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Because most people are happy uploading pictures of their kids on Facebook and they'll be happy to continue doing this. Because Facebook was there first. I would run a Facebook poll to verify my assumptions, but most of my friends don’t even know what the frickin’ frack a Facebook poll is - or why you would bother answering one. I’m going to strike early and say it’s highly likely they will think the same thing about Google +. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">So Google +, I predict you will forever remain second to the arrival of the office coffee machine. A nice to have, an interesting foray and a potentially powerful idea but not permanently plumbed in or essential to my daily life. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">So yeah, but nah. She comes to visit me once a month without fail. She brings me crampy pains, a sore lower back and a bit of a messy week during which I bleed from my vagina. Eww yucky. She’s a member of the family known as the Menstrual Cycles. Most women are related to her but you might know her better as ‘once a month sick problems’. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">I’d also like you to meet my Mum and other people’s mums, daughters, cousins, grandmothers, aunts, wives, fiancés, lovers and friends. Most of them have at some stage bled from their vaginas too. Double Yucky. Some of them are also saddled with a rather crippling condition called endometriosis which causes no end of unbearable pain especially round the time Aunt Flo arrives. Touch my Fallopian Tubes, I’m not afflicted but nonetheless, I’m not always happy to see Flo. You might be surprised to learn that I don’t dance round the house shouting ‘Woo Aunty Flo’s here’ at the top of my lungs, joyously swinging my tampons round my head like poi’s and plotting my next day off work.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Yes she’s annoying, but dearest Alasdair, she’s a fairly basic and arbitrary part of lady biology and there isn’t actually a lot I, or other women, can do about her. I can load up on Evening Primose Oil and Panadol, lie on the couch at night with a hottie to try and ease the pain of my achey uterus but when it comes to work, I usually saddle up, solider on and take Flo with me to the office. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">You see Alasdair most of us girls do that and we do what we can to manage varying amounts of pain and hide that yucky bleedy vagina from the world. We stuff wads of cotton up there and line our knickers with ‘pads’ (the kind you can’t play angry birds on). For years we were subjected to TV ads that showed us how absorbent these magic little devices were by watching people tip blue liquid over them. I for one was a bit confused to find that what come out of me was actually red! We’re also still meant to get excited by the giant leaps and bounds in tampon technology like tying the string together at the bottom of it and shell out eight bucks for the privilege.</span></p> <p> <p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Our feminist fore-mothers fought pretty hard to overcome the 'menstrual taboo' so we could at least talk about what happens down there in our lady parts so that girls all over the world could be safe in the knowledge that when they did start menstruating, it wasn't going to be blue. Their primary argument was that menstruation was normal and that it didn’t prevent us from doing thing like going to work. Nor did we need to leave the village and sit in a hut for five to seven days each month. </span></span></p> </p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">So Alasdair, I really don’t appreciate you taking us back to the Stone Ages by referring to it as ‘once a month sick problems’ within the context of a discussion on pay equity. It doesn't need to be euphemised by you or anyone else and I find your entire argument really bloody offensive.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Perhaps you could find a cotton pony of your own to saddle up and mosey on out of this discussion. I can still do eleven of them without prompting. You know what I can name now: an undie brand, a heat pump, some kind of water, a hockey playing fiancé and maybe three actual rugby players. In case you need reminding of who was in THE GREATEST RUGBY TEAM EVER, they were these dudes:</p> <p>Albert Anderson, Zinzan Brooke, Mark Brooke-Cowden, John Drake, Andy Earl, Sean Fitzpatrick, Michael Jones, Richard Loe, Steve McDowell, Murray Pierce, Buck Shelford, Alan Whetton, Gary Whetton, Kieran Crowley, Grant Fox, John Gallagher, Craig Green, David Kirk, John Kirwan, Bernie McCahill, Joe Stanley, Warwick Taylor and Terry Wright. I LIKED THESE GUYS AND I LIKED RUGBY.</p> <p>I know you’re all choking on your tea about now but once upon a time I was a patriotic kiwi gal that followed Otago and got out of bed to watch big games. My Mum’s family are proper rugby fans; her brothers, good Southern Men. It was in my blood.  I followed Otago and then, when Waikato brought home the Log o' Wood in 1993, switched allegiances. I went down to the stadium and saw the boys bring it home. I had Speights posters, collected autographs, bought a rugby magazine (once),  wore coloured garb and face paint and went to Carisbrook. I LIKED RUGBY.</p> <p>I am not the first person to bemoan the death of grass roots rugby and I’ve listened to enough Deaker to know that lots of people have lots of opinions about it. I really don’t care or know enough to explore it further or talk about it anymore.  I just wanted to let you know that the woman who will be verbally flipping the bird at the event that shall not be named (basically because I can’t work out whether they can sue me for doing so) used TO LIKE RUGBY. It appears to have recently mutated and even those of us with strong resistance to earlier strains are succumbing to this new, more aggressive variety. </p> <p>The mutation seems to have occurred yesterday following the publication of a column by Michael Laws that I won’t link to for fear of further contamination. Known transmitters include newsprint and broadband of comparatively average speed. </p> <p>Symptoms include: nausea, uncontrollable rage, howling ‘Where is the human kindness?’ at colleagues, families and friends and prolonged contemplation of devolution (the biological, not statutory variety).  </p> <p>No official public health warnings have been issued but it is curable. Recovery can be a slow process and often follows the implementation of multi-step plan. Steps include:</p> <p> </p> <ol> <li>Write a blog</li> <li>Comment on some other blogs</li> <li>Tweet or Facebook your outrage and disgust at his comments</li> <li>RT tweets or share Facebook posts expressing disgust and outrage at his comments</li> <li>Post funny pictures of Michael – there are <a href="http://www.google.co.nz/images?q=michael+laws&hl=en&safe=off&pwst=1&prmd=ivnsl&source=lnms&tbs=isch:1&ei=fXp9TavrHoaycP_y3NIG&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CBUQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=868 " title="Google Image search Michael Laws" target="_blank">a lot to choose from</a>: Michael wearing what looks suspiciously like eyeliner, Michael in his funny costumes on Dancing with the Stars, Michael with his heart cut out, Michael as the Devil. If you’re feeling creative, make your own.</li> <li>Cut out his column in the paper, put it in the bin and mail your copy of said paper back to the publisher. You can keep the rolled up little balls of bigotry if you like, particularly if you have a fireplace. </li> <li>Repeat number 6 but hang onto your copy of the paper and enjoy sans Laws (and whatever was on the other side). No matter how foul and fiendish the columnist might be, the Sunday papers make useful toast crumb catchers in bed. I have now rediscovered it, printed it and stuck on my wall. Then <a href="https://twitter.com/stevevoisey" target="_blank">@stevevoisey</a> asked for a link. </p> <p>I once read a bit of it at an end of year function for a rather bureaucratic crowd who were purportedly… sort of… in charge of err… a cities creativity and culture. I was leaving. Probably best really. </p> <p>Here it is:</p> <p><em>The imagination has been so debased that imagination, being imaginative rather than being the lynch pin of our existence now stands for a synonym for something outside ourselves. Like science fiction or some new use for tangerine slices on raw pork chops. What an imaginative summer recipe. And Star Wars, so imaginative. And Star Trek, so imaginative. And Lord of the Rings, all those dwarves, so imaginative. The imagination has moved out of the realm of being our link, I mean our most personal link with our inner lives. The world outside that world, this world we share. What is schizophrenia but a horrifying state where what’s in here doesn’t match up with what’s out there. Why has imagination become a synonym for style? I believe the imagination is the passport that we create to help take us into the real world. I believe the imagination is merely another phrase for what is most uniquely us. Jung says, “The greatest sin is to be unconscious.” Holden says, “What scares me most is the other guy’s face. It wouldn’t be so bad if you both could be blindfolded.” Most of the time the faces that we face are not the other guy’s but our own faces. And it is the worst kind of yellowness to be so scared of yourself that you would put blindfolds on rather than deal with yourself. To face ourselves, that’s the hard thing. People are angry, grieving and exhausted; living with no power, no water, and away from their homes. Mourning family and friends, wondering how the hell they’ll get through the next day.</p> <p>For those of us not in Christchurch, or directly connected to the tragedy other than by the fact we are New Zealanders witnessing our fellow kiwis hurting, we are feeling guilty, disassociated and helpless. We are wracking out brains thinking about how we can help, some of us feeling like we have no role to play at all.</p> <p>I'm on Twitter. It's a place where you can spit out a reaction as fast as you can type it. It is also a place where you can say something only to have the humanity clobbered out of you in a split second.  </p> <p>Over the last week, some of us have used it to communicate our sympathies, some are offering words of support, some are communicating vital information and first hand experiences. Some of us are pressing on with our jobs -  jobs which involve disseminating information about our work; not necessarily because any of us feel stoically committed to a ‘life must go on’ mantra, but because life just does, whether we like it or not.</p> <p>Many of us are back on a regime of tweeting comparatively inane things about doing our washing. I know that every single time I do it, I think about people in Christchurch who can’t do washing or worse - people whose lives are shattered and broken. Some people have jobs that require they express an opinion or provide a perspective on the earthquake based on their area of expertise. Most of the time they're doing things at a pretty rapid rate - catering to deadlines and other people’s demands.</p> <p>The inherent risk in this fast turnaround environment is that bad judgment calls and mistakes are made, witnessed, jumped on and spread. People are demonised, beatified and crucified in the space of 24 hours. By virtue of the fact that we're there it is a risk shared by all of us as both content creators and consumers. </p> <p>Perhaps all I am saying is right now is ‘try a little tenderness’. We don't have to tolerate blatant evil or total insensitivity but let’s not clobber the bejeezus out of each other or the poor person who lets an insensitive ad, comment or spelling mistake slip through the cracks. Quite simply, people can go for it in terms of collecting and they have launched an official appeal.</p> <p>All they ask is:</p> <ul> <li>That you use the official name of the appeal which is: New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal</li> <li>That if possible, you don't use their logo. I don’t really need any more music and yet I find myself in a musical rut listening to The National all day with the odd nostalgic Neil Diamond track thrown in for good measure (Mmm Crunchy Granola).</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">All this leads me to hanker after old fashioned mix tapes – music dubbed off the radio because you loved it or compilations made by friends and partners. Ones you can put on and know they’ll be good because you made them or someone who loved you made them and they remind you of something. #000000;">Currently writing from the Langham in Boston after eating a sundae with whipped cream, caramel sauce, marshmallows and M&Ms. Shuddup, it's been a tough day.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Yesterday was museum day. Hit the Smiths. Dad and John did Air and Space, Mum and I did the National Gallery of Art and we met up to do the gender neutral National Museum of American History. Loved the NGA - the <a href="http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/daleinfo.shtm" target="_blank">Chester Dale Collection</a> and the black<a href="http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/rothkotowerinfo.shtm" target="_blank"> Rothkos in the Tower</a> were stunning.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Did the obligatory First Ladys at the Smithsonian exhibiton and went and saw Kermit at the Museum of Amercian History.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Dinner at the hotel, back to back episodes of the Office, 11.30pm drink with the whanau in the hotel bar, 'Happy New Year', bed.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Meant to fly to Boston at 10.06am this morning but we missed our flight (if you are ever flying out of Dulles airport in D.C., get there earlier than the 45 mins advised by United). Nervous wait to see if we could get on the next flight, some bad Dunkin' Donuts coffee, some prayers to Oprah, and some Lost style decision-making about who would go if we got less than four seats. Big shout out to Gate Agent Maureen at Gate C27, you cookin' and workin' it thing you - we love you. We all got on and arrived in Boston, checked in and here we are, eating sundaes in the Athens of America.</span></p> </p> <p><a is a town of monuments. You are dwarfed by them, surrounded by them and do nothing but photograph them. Iconic and heavily symbolic memorials to dead presidents and wars - flag poles, stars, marble, bronze wreaths, eagles, liberty, 50 states, 5 territories, lost lives.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Washington is one of those planned cities, specifically designed to be the 'permanent seat of the government' by Pierre Charles L'Enfant in 1791 - grids, circles, open space, a place for everything and room for many more monuments (the Rev Martin Luther King one is due to be completed in 2012).</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">We took a trolley tour this morning which was a really good way to get around the city in a short space of time.  We then went to the National Holocaust Museum. Harrowing is really all you can say about it but definitely worth the trip - it's been done really well.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">We then raced off to the Lincoln Memorial, pausing briefly for photos at the Washington Monument, the WW2 Memorial and the Reflecting Pool. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Abe says Hi, Happy New Year New Zealanders and put down that 2nd color: #000000;">Very quick race round Philadelphia this morning - Penn's Landing, Ben Franklin's house,  the Liberty Bell, The President's House, and Macy's (naturally). </span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Hopped a train to Washington D.C., arrived at hotel and Vietnamese for dinner. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Some random notes:</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Amercia does train stations well. The four I have seen (Grand Central, Penn St Station, 30th St Station and Union Station) are huge and pimped out with columns and domes. That is official architectural speak. And their trains have plugs which is handy for recharging the electronic detritus we are carrying. I am totally going to become a train fancier or spotter or whatever. But only american trains and stations.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Favourite TV shows so far: 'Toddlers and Tiaras' and 'Extreme Couponing'. 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' is boring as all hell. Tonight she cut down a tree. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Favourite infomercial: Pyjama Jeans - replacing the snuggy as my must have 'as seen on TV' item.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Tomorrow - mucho site seeing as we try and cram in as much of the Capital as we can before flying to Boston on January 1. John and I have already sussed New Years Eve. Two hours gets you around 3 floors. Lots of photos that do none of the works any justice. Spent up large at Design Store. Now carrying Rothko poster that won't fit in any bag.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Walked to <a href="http://www.momofuku.com/ssam-bar/" target="_blank">momofuku</a> via 5th Ave, Grand Central and St Patricks. Momofuku is a great restaurant and bar in the East Village. Best pork buns ever.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="font-size: small;">Day 7</span></strong></span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Last day in New York and with Pete. Packed up, dragged bags onto subway to Penn Station, watched Pete repack his bag after his suitcase broke (we like to do this at airports and stations all over the world), Times Square, proved this isn't a lying down holiday, had a meltdown in Urban Outfitters (me, no one else), hit M&M World, got M&Ms in every colour available, Penn Station again, said goodbye to Pete, watched train to Philadelphia get cancelled, panic ate at KFC, waited for next train, watched board as that train got delayed, got on train, breathed, arrived in Philly.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: small; color: #000000;">Only here for a night but it's great to have a night to relax. Philly has a really lovely feel to it and the slower pace makes a change from mad New York. Ate out at <a href="http://www.continentalmartinibar.com/" target="_blank">The Continental </a>on Market St - fantastic food.  Will cram in some sightseeing tomorrow but right now I am going to style="color: #000000; font-size: small;">Woke up this morning and it was starting to snow, just lightly. Novelty factor was high. Ten hours later and it's a blizzard. Snow shifted from being cool to just cold very quickly.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000; font-size: small;">By 3.30pm this afternoon we were freezing and getting a tad fractious after shopping in Soho. We had planned to head to the <a href="http://www.thespottedpig.com/" target="_blank" style="font-size: x-small;">Spotted Pig</a> for lunch on Pete's suggestion. Pre-blizzard, this would have been an easy and pleasant walk to the subway and through the West Village. Three hours in the snow and we were threatening to put Peter in a pot and stew him. We find we get most irritable before meals and the couple of minutes before we have confirmation that we are on the right train.  But we made it - it's a great Gastro pub, one block up from the Magnolia Bakery (which was closed!!!!!). The West Village is exactly the New York you see in the movies - brownstone and stoop territory. Fortunately for Peter, the Spotted Pig was worth the long walk - burgers with Roquefort cheese and shoestring fries with rosemary and garlic. Mike Myers walked in just before we left. Took a lot of inner strength to remain cool and not walk past and say: 'The irony<span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; line-height: 15px;"> is, I feel</span><span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; line-height: 15px;"> partly responsible for her self-nullifying </span><span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; line-height: 15px;">behaviour.'</span></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000; font-size: small;">Quick look in Marc Jacobs and taxi to Wholefoods. And Pete, John and I walked home. In the blizzard. The snow has blanketed New York now and is 10 inches deep outside our door. We are inside eating dessert, drinking tea and falling asleep in front of NY1.</span></p> <p> </p> </p> <p><a #000000;"><strong>Christmas Eve</strong></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Discovered Soho on Christmas Eve. Shopped a lot. Soho is incredible. Bought clothes and Christmas presents. Also bought frames for glasses. For those of you who don't know, I have astigmatism in one of my eyes or a stigmata as my friend Emma calls it. I have been ignoring steadily worsening eye sight because I hate my current frames and have instead chosen to develop a hunchback from leaning in to read my computer screen. But no more! After popping into Beau Brummel (because it is in an Annie song), Pete spotted Oliver Peoples. Now I have New York intellectual glasses. We also ended our grill streak and hit <a href="http://www.boquerianyc.com/" target="_blank">Boqueria</a>, a fantastic tapas bar. Frantic shopping, pizza and then <a href="http://annagconnell.posterous.com/merry-christmas-from-the-connells-and-wall-st" target="_self">church for carols</a>.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Christmas Day</strong></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Pete and I started Christmas Day by hitting the 7/11 for beer and toilet paper and John cooked brunch. We ate, walked, blogged, watched basketball and then headed out for a pre-show drink at Gordon Ramsay's bar at the London. Too be honest, it was only ok. Onto to the August Wilson Theatre for 'Jersey Boys'. It was fantastic - intimate theatre, professional, slick and the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
