We dove right in and started working on priorities that needed immediate attention. I quickly established a good relationship with the client and the general contractor. The project has ranged from major decisions such as the kitchen cabinet paint color, kitchen countertop material, primary bath cabinet color, hardwood floor finish, and paint color specifications for the entire house, to small (but important) details such as selecting cabinet knobs. We made changes and improved outdated recessed lighting, and we changed the color scheme and the overall feeling of the house from bright yellows, slate blues and dark reds to a calm, cool and serene neutral color scheme. A huge improvement!

We added window treatments such as cellular shades and solar shades, and we selected furniture and area rugs via numerous emails, zoom chats and calls, working with in-store product expertise from furniture retailers. The furniture will be delivered and the house will be complete soon. I’ll oversee the furniture delivery and placement. I’m excited for my client to arrive and enjoy her new, beautiful, transformed vacation home.

“Universal Khaki” also signals a shift away from grays that have dominated the color scene for years. For the past ten years or so, gray has been everywhere, from paint colors to cabinets, tile and countertop materials, and textiles and rugs. Perhaps beige is back! I’ve always been a fan of warm neutral colors and even during the gray craze, I’ve specified beiges and tans plenty of times. It really depends on what clients like and prefer, and I’m a well-versed guide for the color selection process for design projects.

Off-whites remain incredibly popular, especially for those looking to create a clean, light, and airy space without the starkness of true white. Some of the most beloved off-white shades include Benjamin Moore White Dove, a soft, warm white that works well in almost any setting. I’ve specified White Dove for walls, trim, cabinetry, and built-ins many times. Cloud White is a versatile hue with subtle undertones that pair beautifully with both traditional and modern design elements. It’s also perfect for walls, trim, and cabinetry, offering a neutral backdrop that enhances other design features without overwhelming the space.

I often work on multi-unit residential construction projects in which one standard paint color is used for trim in all units, to keep things neutral and appealing to a wide audience. In those cases, Benjamin Moore Super White is usually the preferred off-white color for trim, with Decorator’s White a close second. Super White is a nice, clean neutral, and Decorator’s White is similar, but a little cooler, with gray tones as mentioned above.
