History of the Cosby Sweater

For anyone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, Bill Cosby's character on The Cosby Show was the cultural definition of "Dad". Just like your Dad he was kooky and embarrassing and this extended to his unusual taste in sweaters.

The key identifying feature of the head of the Huxtable-family was the now infamous Cosby Sweater.

The term Cosby Sweater is now often used to describe any sort of 80's/90's era sweater- but a true Cosby sweater usually has colourful geometric patterns, sometimes using a mix of various wools and fabrics.

In recent years, these sweaters have become very fashionable with the resurgence of 90's style.

VICE recently tracked down the original designer of the sweaters Cosby would become famous for wearing on his show. Koos van den Akker began his work as a designer in his native Holland, then worked for a time in Paris at Christian Dior. He eventually moved to New York which was where his sweaters found their fate. A friend who knew the designer had him make a sweater for Bill Cosby as a gift and he loved it so much he started wearing during tapings and had the designer continue to create his one of a kind creations for him to wear.

Annex Street Style: Faux Spring

As the mercury rose delighfully above zero, our street style photo queen Tessa Cameron went out on the streets of Mile End to see what people were wearing to celebrate this very welcome, but all too brief winter thaw!

It was so nice to see actual faces not bundled in wool and nice little details like Melissa's necklace (above) hand-made out of a metal pipe cleaning tool from her grandfatehr.

She captured several examples of awesome head bands, as sported by these two street stylers Hendrika (above) and Sophia (below):

Laura (below) is rocking a head-to-toe vintage, inclusind a kick-ass briefcase, gold-tone earrings and gorgeous leather ankle boots acquired at vintage shops in London England

Who could resist Hermance's (above) awesome chunky knit sweater and boyfriend jeans.

Thanks to all who stopped for us! And now it's back to regular winter programming (minus -12. ugh!!).

Son of a Sailor

We are pleased to annouce that we are now official stockists of Son of a Sailor. We have a selection of their enamelled lockets and initial necklaces in store now.

Son of a Sailor is based out of Austin Texas, and run by the newly married Jessica Tata and William Knopp. William worked as a graphic designer and spent time in the Navy, while Jessica who has a background in art and design worked in the museum and gallery scene before they started up Son of a Sailor together on Etsy in 2011.

They now have their home-base and studio set up in Austin, where they create their innovative jewellery designs as well as their newly added line of handmade accessories for men and women.

Here are some of the beautiful pieces we have here at Annex:

The Odessa Locket Diagonal

Made of brass and hand painted in a variety of colours. We have the Odessa Locket Diagonal in Bright Orange and Seafoam Green, as well as the Odessa Locket Slice in Bright Orange and Softest Pink.

Initial Necklace

Also made of brass, these necklaces are hand stamped and we have a wide variety of letters in stock.

Mile End Alterations at Annex Vintage

We are happy to announce our new partnership with designer/seamstress extraordinaire Eugenia Leavitt. Eugenia is working with us to improve the look and fit of select vintage pieces in the store!

She is also offering alteration services to customers through her new company Mile End Alterations.

To give you an idea of the difference hemming and small alterations can make, she's renovated two dresses for us, to show how for under $30 bucks, you can turn even the most unlikely dress into fabulous party wear.

#1 Sheer Teal Party Dress

This piece has some nice elements but altogether with the maxi length it was just too much!

The original dress as we found it:

Eugenia hemmed it and cut off the sleeves (It's finished so beautifully. You can't even tell it's been altered).

#2 Dark Floral Maxi

We love the pattern of this dress, but it would take a very special person to pull off this much pattern as a maxi.

Eugenia hemmed it up (a simple 10$ alteration) and voila! A gorgeous little statement piece, set off perfectly with a braided belt, pair of chunky boots or heels.

Both dresses available in store now.
