What is the difference between karat and carat?

One of the most common questions about jewellery is the difference between karat and carat. The terms karat and carat are often used interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings.

Karat is a measure of the purity of gold. It is used to indicate the amount of pure gold in a piece of jewellery. Pure gold is 24 karats, so a piece of jewellery that is 18 karat gold contains 75% pure gold.

On the other hand, carat is a unit of weight used to measure gemstones, such as diamonds. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. The carat weight of a diamond or other gemstone is an important factor in determining its value.

What is the difference between a natural and lab-grown diamond?

Another common question is the difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond. Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth's mantle over billions of years. They are mined from the Earth and have unique characteristics and imperfections.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are created in a laboratory using high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes. They have the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds, but are grown in a matter of weeks or months.

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between the two ultimately depends on personal preference and budget.

How do I clean and care for my jewellery?

Proper cleaning and care is essential to keep your jewellery looking its best. Here are some general tips:

- Remove jewellery before swimming or showering to avoid exposure to harsh chemicals.

- Clean jewellery regularly using a soft cloth and mild soap or jewellery cleaner.

- Store jewellery in a cool, dry place to prevent tarnishing and damage.

- Avoid exposing jewellery to extreme temperatures, as this can cause damage.

- Have your jewellery professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year.

What is the difference between a necklace and a pendant?

Necklaces and pendants are often used interchangeably, but they are actually different. A necklace is a piece of jewellery that is worn around the neck. It can be made of various materials and may or may not have a pendant attached.

A pendant, on the other hand, is a decorative piece that hangs from a necklace. It is usually detachable and can be interchanged with other pendants. Pendants come in various shapes, sizes, and designs, and can be made of different materials.

So, while all pendants are worn on necklaces, not all necklaces have pendants.

What is the significance of birthstones?

Birthstones are gemstones that are associated with each month of the year. They have been used for centuries as symbols of good luck, protection, and healing.

Each birthstone has its own unique meaning and properties. For example, the birthstone for January is garnet, which is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and good health. The birthstone for April is diamond, which symbolizes love, strength, and eternity.

Wearing your birthstone is said to enhance its positive effects and bring you good fortune. Birthstone jewellery makes a meaningful and personal gift for birthdays and other special occasions.

How do I determine the right ring size?

Getting the right ring size is important to ensure a comfortable fit. Here are some methods to determine your ring size:

- Use a ring sizer tool: This is the most accurate method. You can find ring sizer tools online or at a jewellery store.

- Measure an existing ring: If you have a ring that fits well, you can measure the inside diameter or circumference and compare it to a ring size chart.

- Use a printable ring sizer: Some jewellery websites offer printable ring sizer guides that you can use to measure your finger.

It's important to note that ring sizes can vary slightly depending on the width of the band, so it's best to try on rings in the desired width before making a final decision.

Can I wear gold and silver jewellery together?

Yes, it is perfectly fine to wear gold and silver jewellery together. Mixing metals has become a popular trend in recent years and can create a stylish and unique look.

When mixing metals, it's important to consider the overall balance and harmony of the jewellery. You can start by choosing a dominant metal and then adding accents in the other metal. For example, you can wear a gold necklace with silver earrings or stack gold and silver bracelets on the same wrist.

Remember, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to mixing metals. It's all about personal style and experimenting to find what works best for you.

What is the difference between a bracelet and a bangle?

Bracelets and bangles are both types of wrist jewellery, but they have some key differences. A bracelet is a flexible or chain-like piece that encircles the wrist. It can be opened and closed with a clasp or a fastening mechanism.

A bangle, on the other hand, is a rigid, circular piece that slips over the hand and rests on the wrist. It does not have a clasp or fastening mechanism and is usually worn in multiples.

Both bracelets and bangles come in various styles, materials, and designs, and can be worn alone or stacked with other wrist jewellery.

What is the difference between a stud and a dangle earring?

Stud earrings and dangle earrings are two popular earring styles with distinct characteristics. A stud earring is a small, simple earring that sits directly on the earlobe. It usually consists of a single gemstone or a small decorative element.

Dangle earrings, on the other hand, hang below the earlobe and move freely. They can be short or long, and often feature multiple elements, such as gemstones, beads, or chains.

The choice between stud and dangle earrings depends on personal style, occasion, and comfort. Stud earrings are versatile and can be worn daily, while dangle earrings are often chosen for special occasions or to make a statement.

What is the difference between a pendant and a locket?

Pendants and lockets are both types of necklaces, but they have different features and functions. A pendant is a decorative piece that hangs from a necklace and is usually detachable. It can be made of various materials and come in different shapes and designs.

A locket, on the other hand, is a pendant that opens to reveal a small compartment, usually for holding a photograph or a keepsake. Lockets have a sentimental value and are often passed down through generations.

While all lockets are pendants, not all pendants are lockets. Pendants can be purely decorative, while lockets have a functional component.

These are just a few of the most asked questions about jewellery. If you have any other questions or need further information, feel free to reach out to a jewellery expert or visit a reputable jewellery store.

Pearls are one of nature's most exquisite creations. They have been treasured for centuries for their beauty and elegance. Whether you own a classic strand of pearls or a unique piece of pearl jewelry, it's important to understand the different types of pearls and how to care for them properly. In this blog post, we will explore the various types of pearls and provide you with essential tips on how to maintain their luster and longevity.

1. Freshwater Pearls

Freshwater pearls are the most common type of pearls available in the market. They are cultivated in freshwater lakes and rivers, primarily in China. These pearls are known for their wide range of colors, including white, pink, lavender, and even metallic shades. Freshwater pearls are typically more affordable than other types, making them a popular choice for jewelry enthusiasts.

2. Akoya Pearls

Akoya pearls are renowned for their stunning luster and perfectly round shape. They are cultivated in saltwater environments, primarily in Japan and China. Akoya pearls are typically white or cream in color and are often used in classic pearl strands and earrings. These pearls are highly valued for their timeless elegance and are considered a symbol of sophistication.

3. South Sea Pearls

South Sea pearls are among the rarest and most valuable pearls in the world. They are cultivated in the warm waters of the South Pacific, primarily in Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. These pearls are known for their large size, ranging from 9mm to 20mm in diameter. South Sea pearls come in various colors, including white, silver, and golden hues. Due to their scarcity and exceptional quality, South Sea pearls are highly coveted by collectors and jewelry connoisseurs.

4. Tahitian Pearls

Tahitian pearls, also known as black pearls, are cultivated in the pristine lagoons of French Polynesia. Contrary to their name, Tahitian pearls come in a wide range of colors, including black, gray, green, blue, and even peacock shades. These pearls are highly sought after for their unique and exotic beauty. Tahitian pearls are often used in statement jewelry pieces, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication to any ensemble.

How to Care for Pearls

Proper care is essential to maintain the beauty and longevity of your pearls. Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

Avoid Chemicals

Pearls are organic gemstones and can be easily damaged by chemicals. Avoid exposing your pearls to perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, and other beauty products. These substances can dull the luster of the pearls and cause them to deteriorate over time.

Store Separately

When storing your pearls, it's important to keep them separate from other jewelry. Pearls are relatively soft and can be easily scratched by harder gemstones or metals. Store your pearls in a soft pouch or a lined jewelry box to prevent any damage.

Gentle Cleaning

To clean your pearls, use a soft, damp cloth or a mild soap solution. Gently wipe the pearls to remove any dirt or oils. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as they can damage the delicate surface of the pearls.

Regular Wear

Pearls thrive when worn regularly. The natural oils from your skin help to maintain their luster and prevent them from drying out. However, avoid wearing pearls when engaging in activities that may expose them to excessive heat, moisture, or impact.

By understanding the different types of pearls and following these care tips, you can ensure that your pearls remain beautiful and radiant for years to come. Whether you choose freshwater pearls, Akoya pearls, South Sea pearls, or Tahitian pearls, each type has its unique charm and allure. Invest in these timeless gems and enjoy their elegance for a lifetime.

Buying a Ring - How To Get The Right Size

How to measure your ring size yourself when shopping online for a ring, if you are unable to have your ring size measured by a professional jeweller.
More

Some general tips on how to find out which size ring to buy when you are shopping online.

Without access to a professional jeweller's ring sizing stick you can measure the inside of the ring with a simple strip of paper. Measure the circumference carefully by indicating where the ends meet and note down the length in millimeters.

You can also measure the inside of a ring which fits, using the same paper strip method.

You can find your official ring size here, but please note that there are different sizing systems depending on country. We advise that you include your measurement in millimeters for additional reference.

Another option is of course to go for a ring with an open band, a ring which is open at the back or front, or which coils around the finger, like the rings shown below. These types of rings can usually be adjusted slightly by the wearer carefully sqeezing it.

We prefer to send you a ring that fits you perfectly, so if you are able to enclose your size when placing your order we will make our outmost to ensure that also an open ring will arrive a perfect fit.

If you have the chance to have your finger measured professionally, then we will always advise you to do so.

Having your ring re-sized at a later stage will always come at an additional cost, and in some cases - such as when the ring is set with gemstones or where a design or pattern risk getting distorted in the process - the piece might require a complete re-work.

Please note that that if you intend to purchase a wide or slim band, the ring you measure in order to find your size, should be of similar width. A wider band do generally mean that you will requires a slightly larger size.

Here is a general guide to chain lengths, for when you want to buy a necklace online, to yourself or as a gift.

How long you want your chain to be is of course a personal choice, but it usually depends on which style of neckline that you, or the person you are buying the necklace for, tend to wear, and also if you prefer to wear your necklace next to your skin or on top of your clothes.

The general rule is that a close fitting 16" chain works with everything except for tight-fitting necklines and shirts buttoned all the way up.

18", which translates to 45-46 cm (45,72 cm, to be exact), is the most popular and versatile length. If you wear a deep V-neck, tight or deep plunging roundneck, or an unbuttoned shirt, this is a perfect length.

A necklace or pendant that is 20" / 50 cm, or longer, will - unless you wear a very deep plunging neckline - sit on top of your clothes.

This is just general guide so if you are petite, a larger size, or just have a longer torso, the above might not apply to you. Always measure when possible. You want to avoid the pendant hitting the edge of the neckline of what you are wearing.

You also need to take the size and shape of the pendant into consideration. If it is an extra long or very large pendant, then you would most likely need to replace an 18" chain with a 16" chain for the same effect.

The illustration below is a rough guide - your neck and general body size will of course also affect how a necklace will sit and where a pendant will be placed. A pendant added onto the chain will add weight and therefore sit lower down on your torso.than shown below.
