words with swan-eyes and lights blink
touching bones with no name;
Today I became my wishes height.

Just by placing my ears on your love
and watching your concerned lips move
I see teeth release the Truth
from the palms of the earth,
and from societies dust-cloud
a fresh child is drawn
one who speaks in rhymes of antiquity
in a dance of elation
to the rhythm of your applause.

So if this hour closes
and our tracks dissipate
into the phosphorescent ether
then let our last breath and step
sail the baby poets chorus
so to champion this bridal art,
may these moments
precious and grave
release the crying dream
from the heart of our time.

Dedicated to all those who teach.

Haiku III

What is the great sky
What we do to our children

Oh! What we do to our children
afore the sun has kissed
their skin of infinite shore,
we riddle them in serpent’s tongues
that rattle and hiss.
We maul open the bright indigo vein
that streams angels and swans
just so we can push needles
immersed in glorious greed
debauching the wild fruit of innocence
with the pestilence of our own abandoned dreams.

Come and see what we do to our children
our tomorrow, our future suns and moons
walk with a silver inertia, raucous and long.

A fist of repeating metal
feeds unoffending mouths
that gape with splendid eagerness
as such are the mouths of children.
They devour love, need the love that never
hunts tears and anguish, bones and blood,
enough blood to bleed for a starving war
into a singular warm pool, until the stars become sick
and pack their dazzle away.

Open yesterday’s wet wounds
with today’s fresh whip
listen to them all
children
howling parallel deaths into forlorn walls.

Yes, come and see what we do to our children!
Here in the world that beats so surely in God’s breast,
with lofty psalms of virtue
played by an absent ghost
on a silent accordion.

Oh! What have we done to our children
Cutting out all that is heaven-grown;
We ruined so perfectly
our only miracle
our last great majesty.

Haiku II

From the pit of night

the cold cracks frost,

as the resplendent hour closes like a books end

to awaken monsters with ties and shirts

sharpened bottles

filled with daggers of revelry and storms.

Laughter hacked from ashen teeth

looms outside pub doors

huddled and quick, taking in the poison

of tradition, ignorance and frozen cement;

watch it stretch itself, a trail of headless smoke

reaching like a starving cloud over moonless rooftops.

The night breeds in blackness

scorpions open the pale canvas

for blood violence;

men of all sorts savage one another

brutes dressed in pink and green

diamonds sit smug on ears unclean

throwing lighting bolts

drenched in toxin and naive murder.

Nothing is left standing

nor brick nor window nor sense;

A blue and white wail

the anthem

starts as a faint drop of sound

arriving at a red and yellow river

slithering unformed on the ground;

Butchering the nights blush

with its white iron hand

polished shoes shut roads

ambulances scatter like startled deer

splintering the air.

The crowd evaporates into an early mist

coughing, hobbling, gone

lonely sweepers tuck away

glass and stiff blood with a broom

Here civilisation lies!

The hour turns like impassive backs

into a bright felt tip

a new day sips its coffee

briefcases and heels

trample over the stain of yesterday.

Everything moves

bar the wind -

that’s tainted with the solidity of dried blood

the dry blood that always sings

when Friday drinks.
