Warrwa Claimant Group Authorisation Meeting in Broome

Friday the 31st July marked a significant day for the Warrwa Traditional Owners as they participated in a Claimant Group Authorisation Meeting in Broome facilitated by the Kimberley Land Council Representative Body to bring together the Mawadjala Gadjidgar Point Torment and the larger Warrwa Combined Native Title Claims. The all day meeting was well attended by Warrwa Traditional Owners, many of whom came from Darwin, Derby, Port Hedland, Karratha, Mullewa and Perth.

We are pleased to announce that Kirsty Potts and two Ngarluma Consultants recently conducted the Return to Country of the cultural material excavated from the Ngurin #1 archaeological site, as the final output from our project entitled ‘The Excavation of Ngurin #1 – Sharing Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Heritage’. The Return to Country was conducted with the support, co-operation and involvement of, and under the cultural direction of, members of the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation and the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation. We have completed our statutory reporting on the project for the State and we intend to publish the results of the excavation and analysis soon.

Anketell Heritage Project

We are pleased to update you on the Anketell Project, which Anthropos Australis and the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation have been working collaboratively on this year for the Department of State Development. Since our last update on the Anketell Project several months ago, the archaeological Survey Team, which comprise Kirsty Potts, Shannon Smith and Ian Scott working with four Ngarluma Consultants, have examined a total of 43 km2 and have recorded over 160 Aboriginal Heritage Locations (Aboriginal sites). This has been a fantastic result and a great effort by the archaeological Survey Team, who have worked tirelessly to record the Survey area.

As a direct result of the advice of the Noongar Advisory Panel and the Maarli Riverpark Interpretation Plan for the Swan and Canning Rivers that Anthropos Australis facilitated and in the latter case contributed to, this firm has been engaged by the Swan River Trust to commence filming the stories of several Whadjuk Elders for inclusion on virtual trail guides.

Final Noongar Advisory Panel Meeting

It has been almost 18 months in the making but we are finally there. Beginning in February 2013, the Noongar Advisory Panel (NAP), comprising the dedicated group of Whadjuk community members, in collaboration with Anthropos Australis, the Swan River Trust, the National Trust (WA) and Interpretation Team embarked on a journey that has concluded with the compilation of the varied histories of the Swan (Derbal Yerrigan) and Canning (Dyalgarro Beelier) Rivers.

Anthropos Australis is pleased to update you on our Project entitled ‘The Excavation of Ngurin #1 – Sharing Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Heritage’. This joint Project between Anthropos Australis (WA) Pty Ltd, the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation and the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation involved the excavation of an actively eroding artefact scatter with identified subsurface cultural material. Ochre Contemporary Dance - Behind the Scenes Night

Anthropos Australis, as a sponsor of the Ochre Contemporary Dance Company, was invited to attend their Behind-the-Scenes Night at UWA on the 2nd of July.

The evening featured previews of their upcoming works, including a Ngarluma oriented dance which is currently being choreographed with the assistance of Anthropos, and will be showcased at the opening of the upcoming Red Earth Arts Festival in Karratha, on the 6th of September.

The Story Box - NAIDOC Week Opening Day

To celebrate NAIDOC Week 2013, Anthropos Australis held the Story Box Stall at the NAIDOC Opening Day in Wellington Square, Perth, one of only two interactive, cultural stalls at the event.

The Story Box Stall allowed family and friends to come and share stories with each other, which Tiwa Olowoyo and Andrew Dowding from Anthropos recorded and gave back to them on CD. These stories were then played on RTR FM's Morning Magazine throughout NAIDOC Week.
