What happens when bankers, industrialists and car dealers make up the Game and Fish Commission and the Governor is standing on the sidelines? They sell the state's protected lands out to a polluting, money hungry gas company. Then the Governor acts like he knows nothing of the deal but says that he expects the commission to spread the money around. These guys are high rollers with our children's future at stake. They have the gall to say they are taking this risk to get more money for them to buy more land so that they can "protect" it. Horseshit.

Erring on the Side of the Environment

Here's a short video reminder I made for Governor Beebe regarding his oft uttered "erring on the side of the environment" catch phrase. So far this year Governor Beebe has encouraged coal plant construction in SW Arkansas, given away millions of potential tax dollars to the natural gas industry while providing zero-funding for clean up, authorized $10 million dollars in corporate welfare for the Hewlett-Packard Corporation and is set to start Executing Arkansas inmates again.
Am I the only one that doesn't see a whole lot of good in his reign? I'm looking hard. I really want to find some signs of encouragement. It seems to me that "environment" is just another word to him. I don't think he really understands what it means...

West Memphis Three

This video is an amazing summary of all that has transpired since the West Memphis Three were incarcerated nearly 15 years ago. Every Arkansan should see this 20 minute film. This prosecution and trial might be the opposite of the O.J. trials. I dare anyone to watch this film to the end and say with conviction that these men do not deserve- at the very least- a new trial. They should be released and the new evidence in the case should be used to pursue the real killers of the children.

ReCycles Bike Co-Op in Little Rock

This is a short video I made on the ReCycles Bike Co-Op in Little Rock. Five or 6 people per day have been showing up there lately in search of bikes for transportation to and from work. The co-op is part of the Arkansas Sustainability Network at 209 South Victory Street in downtown Little Rock. I went by today and trued both wheels after a hard ride down along the Arkansas River and around the airport. It's a great place for advice and practical skill building.

My friend Blake sent me this clip today and I felt such a kinship to this guy. When I watch him chase his line of thoughts and attempt to enunciate them and the feigned/pained expressions of the others on the set it reminds me of watching myself try to explain new medias to certain educators and politicians. Everything seems so obvious to this poor guy that he can't even give energy to an explanation.

I feel his pain.

We shouldn't have to spell it out to our leaders. They should know. That's the role of leaders. To know. If they don't know, they have the means by which to communicate and seek out those who do.

John Lennon said "Well I tell them there are no problems, only solutions."

So why are our leaders not seing these solutions?

Perhaps they:
a.) are not capable of processing available information in an orderly fashion
b.) are victimized by a self-imposed adherence to a system of circular logic
c.) are insulated from reality due to entire adult life in politics
d.) are more concerned with special interests than greater good
e.) all of the above and then some

My friend Peter shot some great video from the March 23rd, 2008 hearing regarding the Lake Maumelle Watershed. I've embedded it below with hopes that some of you who understand the issue better than me can tell me what is going on. It seems to me like a bit of a "cave-in" by the county. When Jim Dickinson played my run-for-Governor announcement party I asked him to play songs like "Don't You Lie to Me" and "In the Pines"--baby where did you sleep last night? We agreed that infidelity songs were appropriate for both the political climate and the sadly beautiful complicity of the corporate press.

Current case in point: The Arkansas Times still contends that Mike Beebe (Beece/Big Chicken--Beege/Big Gas--the nicknames he's earned thus far) is doing a bang-up job as Governor of Arkansas. I would've thought the shine would have worn off by now and they might call him out on his horrible ignorance and irresponsibility on environmental issues--but perhaps the Times is equally ignorant-- I mean they still believe John Brummet is relevant...Perhaps I'm the one who is emerging from ignorance to this rag's lifelong partisan propaganda.
