30 and Beachy

2012-06-12T08:38:00.001-07:00

When I was 21, I felt (or maybe I was?) invincible. I was a young mother with the most adorable baby girl you can imagine. I had a prestigious job and earned a promotion shortly after. I married the "one" and to top it all, losing weight was as easy as 123 -- even if I ate everything on the menu at McDonalds. I've always struggled with my weight since high school so imagine my excitement when I was skinnier than I have ever been in my whole life after I had my daughter.

But alas, I turned 30 recently. My friends and I had always, always dreaded that mark. My single friends brace themselves for this semi tragedy with a huge L sign on their foreheads. They tell me, "I'll die alone and never have kids" while my married friends moan and say, "Another 10 years and we'll all be fatter. And older." Me? I dreaded wrinkles. Loathed those stubborn, treacherous and permanent lines. When I was growing up, most girls were looking for breasts or curves. I looked for wrinkles. I don't know. Maybe you can blame it on a mother who was crazy about sunblock.

Surprisingly, when my time came, it wasn't all that bad. While my jeans from some 5 years ago no longer fit and maybe a couple of crows feet are definitely visible, I finally paid off some of our loans, completed reading my favorite book series and finished decorating my daughter's room. Most of all, I was at one of the world's best beaches, Boracay.

Since I live in Cebu, I shouldn't be fazed and dazzled by sandy white beaches and clear blue waters. Cebuanos can choose to go to the beach every weekend if they wish. But Boracay? Now that's different. I'm not the sun's biggest fan but I'll happily brave the violent and damaging UV rays for a vacation at this pristine 10-kilometer island.

I took the pictures since I can't swim and was too scared to even snorkel.

Look at that. The beach is perfect. I could live here but I'll miss Cebu too much. :)

My daughter told me that my hat was the same as everyone else's! LOL. Cho gave it to me as a present. We got it at the Talipapa Market in Boracay.

Wah! I was bullied into getting subs for breakfast!

Fine. But I'll be having a huge lunch. I can't live without rice.

People say that when you turn 30, you can't afford to be picky. Well, I certainly don't agree! Why, Tina Fey became the Tina Fey when she was in her 30s! And there's one of my favorite writers, Emily Giffin, who published her first book when she was 32.

So embrace being 30. After all, there's a certain power to it that no 21 year old can have. :)

Favorite Things

2012-04-29T00:11:00.000-07:00

This is perhaps one of the most intricate cakes that I have ever made. Total logged time for making this cake was 30 hours! All in all, I was pleased with the effect and most glad on how it turned out. At first, I was pretty perplexed on how to go about the "sack" and was nervous about carving it. I also had to test the sack texture by trying to mark on some extra rolled fondant. Painting the sack was the only option to achieve the brown, worn look.

Without having to really say anything, this cake speaks volumes about the couple. Both are lawyers who doted on their dog (labrador at the bottom). Coffee is a significant part of the bride's life while the groom loves his roosters (top layer - rooster's house at the back of the couple with small sugar rooster beside the bride).

Going Japanese

2012-03-21T05:53:00.009-07:00

I made this cake for a Japanese-inspired 18th birthday party. The debutante gave me a sketch of the cake and the characters from Powerpuff Girls Z. I was very impressed with her drawing skills and was amazed at how creative she and her sisters were when it came to the details of the party.

Making these made me realize how the party planning trend had changed. My friends' and my own 18th birthday celebration years ago (emphasis on the years. hehehe) were so old school and traditional.

Wonky Candyland Cake

2012-02-19T10:58:00.000-08:00

I made this cake for a two-year-old girl. I loved making the lollies. The best part about this project was the little girl's mother. She was very easy to work with and trusted me with almost everything. The only request that she made was to add candies around the cake. Other than that, she was totally up for anything!

Feet Musing

2012-02-05T09:37:00.000-08:00

I've mentioned several blogs ago that I'm no fashion guru. I was lucky enough to be friends with people who worshiped Karl Lagerfeld and didn't mistake Junya Watanabe as an actor or who would think that wearing GAP is couture. It's safe to say that I was saved by these people during my high heel-shod and power dressing days as a corporate junkie. During that entire time (a decade, to be exact), looking good was a must while comfort is optional. Why, wearing 4-inch platform pumps or pointy toed-stilettos was practically mandatory! I remember being excited on Fridays and Saturdays - it meant being able to wear flats.

But alas, how has life has changed for me and my feet after merely a year! These days, I'm all about comfort and durability. While I love different brands, I simply cannot run and drive around in them. I've tried a lot of brands and with all the going around that I do now, those only lasted barely a year. Happily, I found something that's a perfect match to my feet's lifestyle. Currently, I have the CROCs Winona as my errand-running buddy. I've been using it for almost six months and so far, it looks like just the day when I got it. Far from glamorous, I know, but I'm sure this one would be loyal and would stick around for long time.

Happy Holidays 2011!

After more than 5000 cupcakes and several dozen cakes last December, I might be more than ready to put my feet up over the weekend and enjoy the Sinulog Mardi Gras. Last month was so crazy that I bought my Christmas presents at the last minute and didn't even bother to gift wrap most of those. I just used the actual paper bags that the store gave out! Hey, it's the thought that counts!

Sneaky! Julianna was checking where her gift was. Little lady's got to make sure Ma and Dad didn't forget! :)

Aha! There's mine!

I'm a big, wait, HUGE fan of George Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. I'm on the 3rd book but I'm still mourning over my beloved Khal Drogo.

I totally cried my eyes out when I read this part!

What a week!

Thank you to those who visited my booth!

My BFFs Sheryl and Dianne helped me out despite their busy schedules. I ♥ you, girls!

Of course, my Ma, who is a total mall rat, couldn't resist not being there the whole time. :) Plus, I'd like to acknowledge one little eight-year-old who couldn't sit still the whole time! I call her the pink tornado. (I love you, Julianna!)

Here are some photos.

The cupcake frame was my husband's 29th birthday present. Want to know something cool? The cupcake lights up! Too bad I wasn't able to charge it and there was no available electric plug.

Me, Graeco and Ed. First visitors. I lurve you, both!

Pretty funky, huh? :) I had a blast making this (didn't matter that I spent days on it).

I wish someone would ask me to make it in red and gold. What do you think?

BTW, this design was actually inspired by a similar cake online. I fell in love with it. I wish I can find the original designer. Whoever you are, I hope I can credit you.

Damask. Okay, I bought some ridiculously priced damask stencils and I just felt that I had to use it. Ah, the feeling of vindication.

Me. 2nd day.

My friends are my non-paid and overworked marketing team. Thank you!

They were lining up for cupcakes and checking stuff out.

Last Day. There's Sheryl, Dianne and Me. Milk it, girlfriends! LOL.

Another shot.

Back From the Kitchen

2011-10-07T10:15:00.000-07:00

My friends complain that I use Twitter intermittently and the only regular tweets from me are system generated via Facebook every time I post new photos. It goes something like this, "I posted 2 photos on Facebook in the album "WEDDING, ANNIVERSARY AND DEBUT CAKES AND CUPCAKES"http://fb.me/1jiExiH2B ." LOL.

I've been really busy. Hmmm. Not so long time ago, pre-The Cupcake Theory days, I would have to stop myself from rolling my eyes and I'd need to bite my tongue before I spit out some in-your-place response when I hear people utter these four words. I don't know why I never believed that one can be too busy to read an email or reply to one . Or how someone can't answer their phones or get back to you within an hour. But since my cupcake and cake making days, I realized that it can happen. Even to someone like Ms. RSVP me.

It's been more than a month since my last post. Here are some of the stuff that has been keeping me...fine, I'll say it....busy. :) Enjoy! (More, and I mean more pictures athttp://cupcaketheory.multiply.com/ orhttp://www.facebook.com/www.thecupcaketheory.cakesandcupcakes

It's a mini fondant covered chocolate cake with all the little fellas in that popular video game. The customer told me she was going to give it to someone who needed some anger management. Cute. :)

Officially Sultry, Sexy, Red

Sultry, Sexy, Red

red velvet cupcakes with The Cupcake Theory's signature cream cheese frosting

I finally have an official photo of The Cupcake Theor y's best selling red velvet cupcakes (named Sultry, Sexy, Red by yours truly. Ha! ). I've been meaning to take updated photos of my cupcakes since I've been using photos that my customers' gave me. Those were perfectly fine and taken by people who were practically born with their cameras but the cupcakes' looks were outdated. It's been more than two years since I started selling cupcakes and during the first 6 months, it was a constant trial and error when it came to the piping. I finally found "the one" and decided to stick with it and use it as my signature look (for more than a year now). Many thanks to family and friends who willingly and tirelessly put up with all my cupcake fickleness! I'm still editing photos for the other cupcake flavors and cannot wait to post them!
