In addition to help with cataracts, N-acetylcarnosine may have other benefits. Although the information is not yet published, the unique N-acetylcarnosine formula with its added and synergistic lubricants, could also provide beneficial results with the following eye-disorders:

Presbyopia.

Open-angle primary glaucoma (in combination with beta-blockers).

Corneal disorders.

Computer vision syndrome.

Eye strain.

Ocular inflammation.

Blurred vision.

Dry eye syndrome.

Retinal diseases.

Vitreous opacities and lesions.

Complications of diabetes mellitus and other systemic diseases.

Contact lens difficulties, particularly with soft contact lenses. (Not only do the lubricants in the Can-C N-acetylcarnosine eye-drop help to make wearing contact lenses more comfortable, but n-acetylcarnosine is also believed to reduce the build up of lactic acid in the eye, thus enabling the lens to be left safely in the eye for longer).

What Every Woman Needs To Know About Menopause

If there is one stage of a woman's life that is hard to cope up with that would be her menopausal years. Menopause is defined as the stage wherein a woman's monthly period has stopped. Veering away from the common conception that menopause is a "disease," people in the medical world says that menopause is nothing but a normal and expected change in any woman's body. Menopause is a traumatic time that has to be faced by every female. It causes a host of changes in your body, and the more you know about it, the better fit you will be to get through it smoothly.

Unlike before when menopause is clouded by absurd misconceptions and myths, people now are more open in discussing the phenomenon because many studies have proven that menopause is a natural step in the process of a woman's aging. With the advancement of technology and researches, more and more women are given hope that they can still go on with their life by teaching them to discover and rediscover their purpose in life.

Most studies show that the most common determinant of menopause in women is physical changes. Exercise is a key factor in getting through menopause with a minimum of complications. A regular exercise pattern helps to limit the effects of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with menopause: hot flashes, depression, sleep disorders and irritability can all be lowered through a proper exercise plan. In addition, exercise has merit in preventing the physical aspects of menopause. Osteoporosis and heart disease are more prevalent in those post-menopause, and regular exercise can help to curb these risks.

Experts agree that the average age range of menopause in women is form 50 onwards. But there are cases wherein a woman may experience her menopausal earlier especially if she has undergone. Since menopause is associated with absence of estrogen in the body, afterthe ovaries has stopped producing them, the reproductive system gradually shuts down. Also, some surgeries, major operations and a series of therapy due to cancer and other illnesses may be contributory factors. Other causes of early menopause are autoimmune disorders, thyroid disease, and diabetes.

Basically, menopausal years are divided into three phases: the premature menopause, which is distinguished for women whose ages are below 40 years old. Next are the menopausal climax years from 50 and above and the post-menopausal, which is experienced by women 50 and above and are those prone to more serious illnesses such as osteoporosis.

Experts agree that menopause pertains to the drastic changes in a woman's life that greatly affects her physical appearance, sexual function, feelings of well-being, and overall mood. A woman is said to reach her menopause when there's an absence of menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. Some of the visible symptoms of menopause include:

Drastic change in the pattern of menstrual periods. This can be characterized by shorter or longer span of time, lighter or heavier flow of menstruation, and more or less time between periods.

Occurrence of hot flashes or hot flushes.

Profuse night sweating usually followed by a slight chill.

Sleep disturbances and trouble getting enough sleep due to physical discomfort.

Vaginal atrophy. This is characterized by thinning, drying, shrinking and thinning of the vagina in most women.

Psychological instability characterized by mood disturbances, irritability, fatigue, decreased sexual desire, and memory loss. Violent mood swings, crabbiness, and crying spells, which are usually caused by, pent up frustration due to lack of sleep are also common.

Inability to concentrate or focus on tasks properly. This is characterized by great deal of trouble focusing on things because the woman feels mixed-up and confused.

Hair issues. Women who are experiencing menopause or those who are about to experience it are having trouble dealing with hair issue due to hair loss or thinning on their head. They also experience hair growth on their face, which is quite unlikely for a woman.

Increased estrogen deficiency that leads to vasomotor instability characterized by dyspareunia, itching, dryness, bleeding, urinary frequency, urinary urgency, and urinary incontinence.

Skeletal problems and muscle pains such osteoporosis, joint pains, and back pains.

As a woman's body adapt to the ever-changing levels of natural hormones, more and more symptoms can be traced to menopause.

There are some great natural products that offer Menopausal Relief and it would be wise for women to try them before considering hormonal therapy.

In a ground-breaking research study, participants achieved almost magic results even though their average age exceeded 87 years.

Now before any of our readers get nervous about "resistance exercise" let's be clear that we not talking about pumping heavy iron or stripping your body fat until your showing off your sixpack abs. In a ground-breaking research study, participants achieved almost magic results even though their average age exceeded 87 years.

The training program involved 63 women and 37 men who were residents of a long-term care facility for the elderly. Th e whole study took place in 10 short weeks.

The details of the program were as follows:

* Only two muscle groups in the body were trained: the hip and knee extensors. A seated leg-extension machine was used to strengthen the knee extensors and for the hip extensors either a wall-mounted cable-pulley system or leg press machine was used. And you can achieve the same results at home without any machines.

* The amount of weight used was 80 percent of the one-repetition maximum or the maximum weight that could be lifted one time only. The weight was increased each training session if possible, and the one-repetition maximum was re-established every two weeks.

* Training sessions lasted approximately 45 minutes for three days a week with a day of rest between sessions. Each session consisted of three sets of eight lifts using each device, plus time to warm up beforehand and cool down afterward. Each lift lasted six to nine seconds with one to two seconds of rest between each lift and two minutes of rest between each set. After the 10 weeks, for the 94 percent who completed the program muscle strength increased by 113 percent, walking speed (gait velocity) increased by 11.8 percent, stair-climbing power improved by 28.4 percent, and cross-sectional thigh-muscle area increased 2.7 percent. Participants could also walk farther and were significantly more stable on their feet. In fact, 35 to 40 percent of those who were chair bound prior to the study improved to the point that they could climb stairs.

* Thirty-eight percent of these individuals were 90 years old or older. Eighty-three percent required a cane, walker, or wheelchair at the start of the study, and 66 percent had fallen during the previous year. The most prevalent chronic conditions were arthritis in 50 percent of the individuals, pulmonary disease in 44 percent, osteoporotic fracture in 44 percent, hypertension in 35 percent, and cancer in 24 percent. About the only things that disqualified someone from participating in this study were a terminal illness, severe cognitive impairment, insulin-dependent diabetes, or a leg fracture within the six months prior to the start of the study. The criteria for inclusion into the study were being over age 70 and being able to walk a distance of 6 meters or 20 feet.

Now, does it NOT make sense to do resistance training 3 times a week to keep your youth? This was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (1994;330:1769.1775)

Simple aerobic exercise totally negated the risk caused by a genetic weakness. This certainly qualifies as the “poor man’s form of genetic therapy.” Can you imagine the news coverage a story like this would receive if someone were able to achieve these results using some very expensive, gene-altering, high-tech therapy? A moderately intensive aerobic exercise program may not have the “selling power” of something like genetic engineering or DNA replacement. But when you consider that it’s free, it’s currently available to everyone we should all use it!

Cancer cells have now been found to have insulin receptors, and we know that insulin and (IGFs) or insulin-like growth factors regulate the energy metabolism and growth essential to the growth and survival of a tumor.

Cancer cells have now been found to have insulin receptors, and we know that insulin and (IGFs) or insulin-like growth factors regulate the energy metabolism and growth essential to the growth and survival of a tumor. Pharmaceutical companies see a potential gold mine in the development of anti-cancer drugs that address this mechanism. This is further proof of the great importance of changing our eating habits, especially to help control our blood sugar levels.

The spike in glucose levels following sugar intake triggers a corresponding spike in insulin levels. Th e excess insulin from chronic spiking damages blood vessels and organs and feeds cancer. Simply by controlling blood sugar (minimizing or eliminating sugar and refi ned carbohydrates) we can reduce our risk of developing cancer and increase our chance of survival in the event it occurs.

Recent research, (published in Med Hypotheses 08;71:752–761) (Eur J Endocrinol 06;154:577–585) (Sports Med 97;24:321–336) tells us insulin resistance is “genetically mediated.” This means that there are underlying environmental factors (obesity, toxins, etc) that can lead to insulin resistance, but your degree of susceptibility to the problem is controlled by genetics. Not only does your genetic makeup make you either more or less susceptible to things like pain or immunity to various pathogens. It’s also a determining factor as to whether you develop insulin resistance. But just because you have a genetic weakness or susceptibility doesn’t mean you’ll develop the problem. In this particular case, research has shown that aerobic exercise is the single most effective method to overcome this genetic trait.

Our brains are affected by the same processes that contribute to overall aging, so how well we have taken care of ourselves throughout our lives affects not only our general health, but also our mental function.

Our brains are affected by the same processes that contribute to overall aging, so how well we have taken care of ourselves throughout our lives affects not only our general health, but also our mental function. The brain is a ravenous consumer of glucose and oxygen, both of which are supplied by the blood. If your heart is weakened by years of inactivity or if your arteries are clogged with cholesterol, then your memory and mental functioning will be impaired. To counteract aging of the brain, I recommend supplementing with the herb Ginkgo biloba.

Ginkgo biloba contains flavonoids, potent antioxidants that help protect your brain cells from free-radical damage. Ginkgo biloba improves circulation and delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the brain and has been shown to be helpful in combating memory loss, improving mental function, and alleviating depression, dizziness, ringing in the ears and headaches. The recommended dosage is 120-160 mg per day to be taken in three divided doses. You will probably need to give Ginkgo biloba at least six months to start seeing results.

Another herb to use to improve mental function is ginseng. Ginseng is an adaptogen, which improves the body's ability to adapt to a broad range of physical and biochemical conditions and stressors. Ginseng normalizes a wide range of body functions, improves immune response, and increases physical and mental energy and stamina. The recommended dose of ginseng is 500 – 600 mg of a liquid extract or 1 to 2 grams of the dried root. After you've taken it daily for two or three weeks, take a two-week break before starting up again.

Heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, senility, and Alzheimer's disease all share a single hormonal deficiency: low blood levels of DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone that is produced by your adrenal glands. DHEA, often called the "mother hormone," is considered a precursor hormone, because the body uses it to make other hormones such as testosterone and estrogen.

DHEA has been shown in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to have restorative and revitalizing effects. Unfortunately, natural DHEA levels decline dramatically with age. By age 70, your DHEA levels will likely be less than 30% of what they were at their peak in your 20s. And low blood levels of DHEA have been associated with many degenerative conditions.

DHEA is available without a prescription. I recommend that both men and women take between 25 and 50 mg of U.S. pharmaceutical-grade DHEA daily.

take enough antioxidants at doses that research has shown to be effective at neutralizing free radicals, which, in some cases, is many times the RDA level.

We know that aging isn't caused by one factor, Denham Harman, M.D., of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, has collected data in support of his theory that aging is caused by free radicals. Free radicals are highly unstable molecules that seek out and attack other molecules in your body, such as fats, proteins, and the genetic material in your cells.

The key element in the production of free radicals is oxygen. As your body performs its millions of chemical interactions in the presence of oxygen, free radicals are generated as a byproduct. The environment also contains numerous substances that give us free radicals directly or cause us to create them as a byproduct of fighting off toxins. Each time your body defends itself against a free radical, a new free radical is produced, unleashing a chain reaction that can severely damage or destroy your tissues.

Dr. Harman found that free radicals are implicated in such diseases as atherosclerosis, hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, late-onset diabetes, and Parkinson's disease. You can see that free radicals have a far-reaching effect on our bodies — if we let them.

Since oxidation causes free radicals, the solution is an antioxidant. Your body has built-in antioxidant defenses composed of enzymes, vitamins A, C, E, and beta-carotene, and trace minerals such as selenium and zinc. Each plays a different role in your health.

    * Beta-carotene (which your body converts to vitamin A) protects the lipid (fat) portion of cells, such as cell membranes, from free-radical damage.

    * Vitamin C protects the body's watery components, such as the fluid of the blood, against free-radical attacks. It also restores oxidized vitamin E to its active state.

    * Vitamin E prevents cholesterol from being oxidized, or converted into its artery-damaging form. Like beta-carotene, it also protects cell membranes from free-radical damage.

    * Selenium is a powerful antioxidant in its own right but is also an essential component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects against free-radical damage to cell membranes.

    * Zinc plays a critical role in immune function, and is involved in more enzymatic reactions than any other mineral.

As we age, our levels of naturally produced antioxidants decline. At middle age, we experience a particularly steep drop in the body's primary antioxidant, glutathione. From that point on, we live in a state of chronic antioxidant deficiency, which continues as we age.

To slow the rate at which we age and reverse much of the damage that aging has already inflicted, we should use antioxidants to counteract the deficiency in our bodies. Antioxidants will put out the "free-radical fire" by interrupting the damaging chain reaction started by free radicals and neutralize free radicals before they have a chance to do damage.

You must give your body ample amounts of antioxidants every day in two ways: by eating antioxidant-rich foods, such as carrots, oranges, leafy greens, nuts, brown rice, and beans, to list only a few, and by taking nutritional supplements. Remember, it's virtually impossible to eat the quantities of food you'd need to get optimal levels of each antioxidant. It's not enough just to consume the Food and Drug Administration's recommended dietary allowance (RDA).

The government's RDAs are of little value in preventing age-related deterioration. My advice is to ignore them. Instead, I recommend that you take enough antioxidants at doses that research has shown to be effective at neutralizing free radicals, which, in some cases, is many times the RDA level.

Here's an overview of the antioxidant doses you should be getting in your multivitamin:
Vitamin A: 5,000 mg
Vitamin C: 2,650 mg
Beta-carotene: 15,000 IU
Vitamin E: 800 IU
Selenium: 200 mcg
Zinc: 30 mg
