Terry Bryn's Travel Air and PA-11

Terry Bryn wrote in with details on his Travel Air project and flying fleet:

I bought the last Travel Air my mother had before she died a few years ago. I could go on and on about stories when I was quite young with my father. He was 49 years old when I was born so there was quite an age difference. I spent a lot of time with him and his airplane buddies. They are great memories.

My project is in Brodhead and should be done this summer. I had a phone call this spring from the son of the original owner of NC6455. He was wondering if the aircraft still existed, so our conversations are still going on occasionally. After he contacted me I thought I should do some more ownership research on NC6455. As it turned out the second owner was from North Dakota and was the uncle of some dear friends of ours that we met while in college and have been friends ever since. We never knew the connection until a couple of months ago.

Attached just a few random photos of our project and some of what we do for fun around here. The 1948 PA-11 was purchased new by my father and was made into a spray plane for 20 years. My son Jamie owns it now with a complete restoration just finished last summer. Another is Jamie giving rides in his Scout on Thanksgiving day in 2011 on our farm. The photo with the Cherokee is me on the left my son Jamie on the right and his son Peter on the center. The photo was taken after Peter’s first flight lesson at age 7.

Jamie and Peter are pretty excited about a new hanger we just put up just for antique airplanes.

Thanks again,
Terry Bryn

Eaglet Project for Andrew Andraka

Andrew Andraka is beginning the restoration of an American Eaglet project:

I am currently embarking on the restoration of a 1931 B-31 American Eaglet. I acquired the aircraft from storage this past year. The aircraft was last restored in 1987 but flew very few hours before being donated to a military aviation museum. I acquired it from that museum after it sat in storage for several years and currently work on it with my partner (we are both aerospace engineering students and pilots). I am currently looking for leads on replacing the engine block for the Eaglet. It has a Szekely 45 hp, 3 cylinder engine with a dime size hole in the block. I was hoping you might be able to share our project and help us drum up leads on Szekely engine parts and American Eaglet parts (and jigs!). Our hope is to return NC597Y to the air in the near future. Thank you!

Andrew M. Andraka

Video from Cawley's South Prairie Fly-In

Jason Fortenbacher at Fight2Fly Photography posted a video of flying action from the Cawley's South Prairie Fly-In held last weekend. This is the fly-in where we recently saw pics of Jim Moss' Gee Bee Q.E.D. replica under construction. The fly-in is open to all but there's a heavy concentration of antiques and classics, reflected in this video.
