Historic Aircraft Rally to the Antique Airfield Homecoming Routes

The Antique Airplane Association Inc. (AAA). and the Air Power
Museum Inc. (APM) cordially invite our AAA members and their guests to
the 66th National AAA Fly-In and the 46th AAA/APM Invitational Fly-In.
Come join us to celebrate HARAAH, the Historic Airfield Rally to
Antique Airfield.

We are calling on owners of pre-1941 airplanes (certified or homebuilt
design) to participate in the inaugural "Historic Airfield Rally to
the Antique Airfield Homecoming," forever after to be known as HARAAH.

Since 1953 the AAA has worked to 'Keep The Antiques Flying'. In 2008,
for instance, AAA/APM achieved great success during its invitational
fly-in by hosting “Air Mail Days”. Not only did airplanes that once
flew the Air Mail attend, but AAA-member crews were sworn in by the
United States Postal Service to actually fly the mail in 17
antique/classic airplanes. In 2019 HARAAH will build on this
tradition of experiencing historical flight as it really happened... or
nearly so.

Between August 28 and September 2nd (Labor Day Weekend) up to 25
pre-registered crews will fly antique/classic aircraft from all over
the US to rendezvous with hundreds of other antique and classic
aircraft at Antique Airfield (IA27) near Blakesburg, IA. Along
the way, these emissaries of aviation’s storied past are being
encouraged to stop at airfields of historic significance. Examples
include, but are not limited to, former aircraft manufacturing sites,
such as Lock Haven, PA (KLHV), onetime home to Piper Aircraft; or Iowa
City, IA (KIOW), which was a stop along the transcontinental Air Mail
route. Former military bases, such as Sweetwater, TX (KSWW) and
Ottumwa, IA (KOTM) are likely stops, as are private aerodromes with
historic roots, such as Koerner Field outside Kankakee, IL (3KK). And
fields with aviation museums housing historic airplanes such as First
Flight at Kitty Hawk, NC (KFFA) or Mid America Flight Museum in
Mt. Pleasant, TX (KOSA). The point is, we not only want to keep the
antiques flying but also the airfields they once used. We want to
bring attention to these historic aerodromes and, in doing so, help
keep them open. Speaking of open, we’re open to more
suggestions. What’s your favorite historic airport?

How it works: AAA members with appropriate aircraft who wish to
participate must register in advance as well as let us know the route
and airports they plan to include. Up to 25 aircraft will be
designated as official entrants and issued commemorative logbooks in
which to record—and later share—their journeys to the 2019 AAA/APM
Invitational Fly-in. Don’t plan to register as one of the 25 entrants
but still want to fly the routes? Great! Anyone, in any aircraft, is
welcome to fly the same routes and visit the same historically
significant airports enroute to Antique Airfield. Visitors to the
annual Fly-in at Blakesburg must be AAA members, but that’s easily
achieved by joining AAA and registering
to attend the 2019 Labor Day Weekend AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in,
where aviation history is alive and flying!

Anyone interested in participating,—as pilot or sponsor--in the first
ever HARAAH, please contact
Brent Taylor at AAA Headquarters, or call (641) 938-2773.

Addison Pemberton, Spokane, WA in his 1931 Stearman 4DM

My plan is to intercept Ben Scott and company in Ogden Utah and fly I-80 and a segment of CAM 18 to Omaha, with a stop at the historic airports along the way then a stopover in Greenfield, IA before the IA27 arrival on Thursday.

Dave & Jeanne Allen from Elbert, CO. Likely in their 1934 Waco YKC.

We're planning our overnight stop at Red Oak, IA (KRDK) prior to IA27. They are very supportive of hosting a HARAAH stop there. We will make at least one other stop in Nebraska. Our typical MO is small airports with good grass. We're excited about HARAAH... should be fun!

Ben Scott, Larry & Ilse Harmacinski from Reno, NV in Ben’s 1930 Stearman 4E

I expect to hit the CAM 18 stops, meeting with Addison at some point.

Jeff Cain from Denver, CO in his 1940 Piper J4A

Our flight will now be "from Lindbergh to Earhart", as we will be stopping at Bird City (Lindbergh) and following Highway 36 East to Atchison KS (birthplace of Amelia Earhart) on our way to Blakesburg. We are hoping to stop in Bird City on Tuesday Aug 27 (weather permitting), where Rod Young of Bressler-Young Aviation will give us a tour of the Lindbergh displays at the Bird City Library and at the Antique Engine and Thresher Museum, dinner at Big Ed's in Bird City, and a short hop for an overnight in Oberlin, KS. (Bird City no longer has a motel.)

Jerry Griggs from Goddard, KS in his 1940 Piper J-5A.

Jerry reports his route will likely be from the Wichita, KS area (where there’s a plethora of Historic Airfields) to Antique Airfield. However he states, "There is a chance I may fly up to Michigan first to visit grandkids. In that case I’ll be flying from Kalamazoo, MI to IA27. Or perhaps we could make it Wichita to IA27 via Kalamazoo."

Robert Patrick from Weiser, ID in his Waco Taperwing replica.

"Our route will be the airmail stops starting at SLC plus a side leg to Bird City, Kansas, stop in North Platte and Greenfield, IA". Robert further states; “.....the historical background of the Harrah is inviting and I very much like to help any entity that is trying to preserve early aviation, such as Bird KS."

Russell Madden from Graford, TX in his Pietenpol Aircamper

I haven’t got a route in mind but if anyone is going from the DFW or west Texas area maybe they can give me a yell and maybe we could meet you as a group on the way up? If there is any place you would like me to stop on the way let me know.

Eric Amundson in his 1940 Taylorcraft BC-65.

Eric is based at Ft Dodge, IA and plans to fly from there to Alliance OH (where Taylorcrafts were built) then back to Antique Airfield. "The route I initially set up is KFOD Fort Dodge, IA to KCWI Clinton, IA to KOXI Stark County Knox, Indiana to KOWX Putnam County Ottawa, Oh to 2D1 Alliance, Oh which is a grass strip a couple miles north of the Taylorcraft factory. The return trip is 2D1 to KDFI Defiance, Oh to KRZL Jasper County Rensselaer, In to C75 Marshall County Lacon, IL to IA27."

Eric plans to also add a few more stops: Stopping at KIGQ Lansing Airport south of Chicago. Henry Ford built a hangar there to house Ford Tri-Motors. Also adding KSMD Smith Field Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was the city's first municipal airport in 1925 and was on the mail route in the early 30s.

Antique Airfield Ready for Fly-In

Antique Airfield is open and ready for the fly-in!

The wind blew, it rained, but other than some tree damage, blown over tents and one window in AAA Headquarters, Antique Airfield fared just fine in the strong storms yesterday.

The runway is good with no soft spots, no standing water and drying nicely.

The AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in starts today at noon!

Call for Volunteers at Antique Airfield

With just a little over a week to go until the start of the AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in (Aug 29th - Sept. 3rd) much has been accomplished in preparation for the event, yet much needs to be done.

Since late July a group of volunteers have been showing up to help prepare the facilities, the grounds and even some of the APM aircraft for the event. We're asking for additional support to help prepare the airfield; please read on!

The volunteers who've been readying the field are:

Steve Adkisson

Tim & LuVerne Verhoeven

Mark & Terri Lancaster

RLT, Ben, Marcy and Brent Taylor

While there have been no major projects with which to contend this year, there is still the usual cleaning and field prep work to accomplish in the next 9 days.

This weekend will be last minute preparations and the annual mowing party, so that the field is ready by the time the fly-in starts on Wednesday August 29. We hope to see new volunteers to help prepare Antique Airfield for the fly-in that we all love. So with the coming weekend and the annual mowing party, we hope to see a larger cadre of volunteers on hand to help in the final push.

If you can come help, please let us know to help plan for food & refreshments, and we hope to see you this coming weekend.

Adkisson Hangar "Buy-a-Foot" Campaign Major Milestone

The Adkisson Hangar "Buy-a-Foot" campaign, to finance the rebuilding and reassembly of the late Earl "Skeezix" Adkisson’s 45’ x 48’ hangar has reached a major milestone!

But to review a bit before we get to that news, the hangar is a Butler Building, which should make reassembly relatively easy since it bolts together. However, a new foundation, new steel siding and roofing will be needed to allow for and complete the re-assembly.

Starting with "seed money" in the amount of $6080.00 from several AAA members, two AAA Chapters, Tom Frasca and the Pella Rollscreen Foundation, donations have been steady, with each square foot of the 2,160 square foot facility sold at a tax deductible donation of $30 per.

We are most pleased to announce, we have topped $25K with 38+% of the available space bought and paid for.

That amount will allow us to move ahead and construct the foundation for the hangar. That work will begin asap after the conclusion of the 2018 AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in!

Of note, as with all APM projects, the Board of Directors policy is to never take on any debt with projects such as the Restoration Center, and the Adkisson Hangar for example. That policy has kept the APM solvent and moving forward since it’s founding in 1964, while many other aviation museums have struggled and failed over the last four plus decades!

While the APM may complete such projects in steps as we have the funding for, projects such as the Adkisson Hangar will continue to be totally paid for upon completion.

That is why I hope you will join with the directors, volunteers and donors to the Adkisson Hangar "Buy-a-Foot" campaign, and help us reach a goal of having this campaign at least 50% funded by the start of the 2018 AAA/APM Invitational Fly-in!

That equates to having 1080 sq ft. (of the total available 2160 sq. ft.) bought and paid for, at a total of $32,400.00.

Presently, we have sold 838 sq ft., so another 242 sg ft., or $7260.00, is needed to reach this interim goal.

And whether you buy just one sq. ft. or 100, it all helps! We hope you'll join with us to reach this goal and complete another big step in the Adkisson Hangar Project.

So, if you are ready to help make the APM Adkisson Hangar a reality, click here to buy a foot online or send your check or MO to the APM "Buy a Foot" campaign at 22001 Bluegrass Rd. Ottumwa, IA 52501.

Just think, won’t it be great upon completion to have Harold Krier’s DeHavilland Chipmunk and the Jocelyn/Price/Baron Great Lakes as the center pieces of this new facility?

Here's the next installation of a lot of fly-in pre-registrations that have come in. Look for more photos in the next couple of days!

The fly-in starts in about a month, but there's plenty of time to register online for the 2018 BTB Days Blakesburg Fly-In. You can register online using PayPal or a credit card, or by printing and filling out a mail-in paper form.

When you register online, please email us a photo and we'll add your plane to this list of pre-registered aircraft photos.
