Osher Map Library at U of Southern Main is now Open

The Osher Map Library (OML) and Smith Cartographic Center at the University of Southern Maine reopened in October after being closed for two years while it was expanded. Two new public spaces - a contemporary exhibition gallery and a multipurpose room where the children started their tour - are part of a $12.3 million, three-story renovation designed by Koetter Kim & Associates of Boston. The project quadrupled the library’s size, from 4,500 to 19,500 square feet, adding advanced security systems and a 7,500-square-foot climate-controlled vault made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

We have a little box in our sign up form for readers to drop in how they are using Antique Maps or what kind of map they are looking for. We get all kinds of responses and interesting comments. Project include, craft projects, murals, business cards, websites, it just goes on and on. One of our readers wrote us that she what working on a painting project to convert an existing globe into an antique one. She has finished the project and sent us a picture, how cool. Sardinia, detail from our 1890 Italy map. Sardinia is a 24,090 square kilometeres or 9,301 sq mile island of the western side of Italy. It is surrounded by Corsica on the north Italy o n the east and Tunisia below. It is a constitutional part of Italy, with special statute of regional autonomy under the Italian Constitution. It is a pretty rocky ancient land and the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Agriculture, some chemical, services, and lots of tourism make up the economy of the island. Population is about 1.6 million.

Sebastien Munster, born 1488 at Ingrelheim, Germany. Famous for his book Cosmographia, one of the best selling books in the 16th century. He also wrote Dictionarium trilingue and Mappa Europae. He died from the plaque in 1552.

Map of Western Hemisphere, 1550 by Sebastian Munster, 1489-1552, a German cartographer, cosmographer and a Hebrew scholar. He is know for his work Cosmographia which is the earliest German description of the world. Cosmographia was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. Published into many languages including Latin, French, and English.

1664 World Projection Map by Joan Blaeu

Note the age of the characters along the bottom of this 1664 world projection map by Joan Blaeu. Going from left to right we have spring as a youthful woman with flowers, then a woman crowned with grain representing summer, autumn is a mature woman with a fall harvest and finally on the right is an old man warming himself by a fire. Maps were often filled with classical Greek and Roman mythological images. Many representing the seasons, differences in the continents and elements from the Greek beliefs of nature made up of earth, fire, water and air.

We continue with sample vintage maps from around the world from our royalty free Antique Historical Clip Art Map Collection. Above we see Africa from 1688, an Asia map from 1680, Palestine in 1650, this is a very cool map with pictures of the Apostles around the edges, and Australia in 1818. I am often amazed at the level of detail these maps contain especially in that there were no airplanes or satellites to look down from above. Yes some was made up, but still they are very cool.

If you have walked into a craft or fabric store there is no question, scrapbooking is alive and well. But coming on strong is a new form of the craft, digital scrapbooking. Using Photoshop, templates, digital photos, clip art and backgrounds, it becoming easier and easier to stay on your PC. Also growing are a range of sites that allow you to build and store your pages. Sites like smilebox.com, designerdigitals.com, shutterfly.com, snapfish.com, creativememories.com and savannahscrapbooks.com.

Pages can be built on a blank screen, stored until done and then shared with friends and family on line. You can work on the pages from anywhere that you have online access. It is a whole new world of personal journals and memory books. Many services exist today for printing your pages or creating an entire book.

Keep it clutter free is often heard today. Which ever way you go, paper or digital, there are a lot options and a lot of fun with digital scrapbooking.

Scrapbooking enters the digital age

Scrapbooking has gone digital, and so have all those little decorative bits and pieces.

Although paper scrapbooking is still thriving, the digital option has attracted a new range of crafters, from men -- many of whom think paper scrapbooking is too precious for them -- to women who can't commit to the paper process.

Erin Clayton, of Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H., falls into the latter group. She bought paper scrapbooking supplies for years but "I just couldn't do the paper thing," she says. "I collected the stuff and never ever did a page."

Then this mother of a 15-month-old found digital scrapbooking.

"I honestly love it," she says. "It's such a creative release."

Clayton has been digital scrapbooking since April and already has printed a 22-page scrapbook, "Something About Maisie," that's posted in the "community gallery" at Shutterfly.com. Recently she completed her 100th digital page.

Each page takes a few hours to complete, starting as she does from a blank screen, but Clayton is in no hurry to print them all. Instead, she saves them on the Web site to share with family and friends.

She is focused on documenting her daughter Mairead's growing-up years, addressing her digital pages directly to the little girl she nicknamed "Maisie."

"I write to her, which makes me feel good," says Clayton. "This is for her."

Jeffrey Housenbold, the CEO of Shutterfly, a leading online source for printing and sharing digital photos, says he has ventured into the digital scrapbooking realm himself, using his company's photo books. The premade formats allow customers to drag and drop their pictures, then print them in a scrapbook format. It's fast and simple. Other companies, such as Snapfish and Creative Memories, offer similar services.

An avid photographer who documents his family's outings, Housenbold says the photo books are a creative outlet.

"It's part of my hobby of self-expressing through images," Housenbold says. "As a dad now, there's a lot of satisfaction in passing along memories to the kids."

For the novice, these formatted photo books are the way to begin.

The 12-by-12-inch books are the costliest (beginning at $59.99 at Shutterfly, $49.99 at Snapfish, and $79.95 at Creative Memories), and are best reserved for special events such as weddings and "new baby" books.

All three of these companies offer a less expensive 8-by-8-inch format, and Snapfish offers a 5-by-7-inch "paperback" (starting at $11.99) for documenting family vacations and other events that don't quite merit a large cash outlay.

A smaller Web company, Smilebox, offers scrapbooking and e-cards with a multimedia twist: Customers can animate their Web-based scrapbook pages with music and video clips.

Smilebox customers can e-mail their scrapbook pages or post them to any blog site, says Yannis Dosios, Smilebox's marketing director. They can download or print them, too. And Smilebox is free, although more features are available at its premium and club rates.

"It's really easy," says Dosios. "Everything is supposed to happen in a couple of clicks."

That's the key to digital scrapbooking for those who've fallen for it: It's flexible, portable, potentially inexpensive -- and clutter-free.

Savannah Brentnall is a Los Angeles "digi-scrapper" who began as a paper scrapper. Today, she may hybridize her digital work with ribbon or some other simple embellishment after a page is printed, but she primarily works in the digital format.

"It's good to get rid of the clutter," says Brentnall, who scrapbooks professionally on her Web site, Savannahscrapbooks.com.She clicks off another reason why digital scrapbooking beats paper: You can scrapbook anytime, anywhere a computer can go.

"I can scrap while I'm on the road if I want to," she says.

Digital scrapbooking allows enthusiasts to save their work on a Web site, to provide a little insurance: Another book could be printed if the original is lost or damaged. Extra copies can be printed for family and friends.

"These are not irreplaceable things anymore," says Brentnall.

Digital scrapbooking can be as addictive and time-consuming as paper-scrapping. Kits full of formats, typefaces and embellishments can be bought and downloaded.

"You can get carried away in either method," says Ali Edwards, a graphic designer who creates scrapbooking artwork for DesignerDigitals.com. "That whole hording mentality, which happens in paper, is going to happen in digital scrapbooking as well."

Brentnall says she has computer folders bulging with free downloads. Digital scrappers simply need to search for the freebies and sales online.

Will digital scrapping one day sideline the paper scrapbooking so many women enjoy? Not according to Brentnall.

"There's still definitely something about the tactile nature of having 3-D embellishments, and touching ribbon and touching buttons," she says. "I think we'll see more of a move to (hybridizing) before we see paper die out completely."
