1828 Malte-Brun Map of the Eastern Hemisphere (Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia)

This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of the Eastern Hemisphere. It covers Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and the East Indies. Although 'New Holland' officially changed its name to Australia in 1824, it is here referred to by its older Dutch name. The interiors of Africa and Asia here follow archaic geographical conventions - giving evidnece to the general lack of knowledge about these regions in the early 19th century. The interior of Australia is entirely unexplored. This is a fine example of the 1862 H. H. Lloyd map or chart of the world on Mercator's Projection. The map is centered on the American continent and a portion of Asia is duplicated to show its connection with the United States. The Antarctic continent is shown only sketchily as 'Supposed Southern Continent', representing the relatively primitive state of Antarctic exploration during this time. This is a beautiful example of George Philip's 1888 pocket map of New Zealand and the islands of Polynesia. This is essentially seven maps compiled onto a single sheet. The left map, covering half of the sheet, focuses on New Zealand with three inset maps of Auckland and the adjacent country, the country around Dunedin and the eastern portion of the Otago Gold-Fields, and Norfolk and Philip Islands. A fascinating example of the 1853 Perthes map of Australia and Polynesia. This map covers from Southeast Asia eastward as far as the Gulf of California, and from Japan Southwards to include all of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. This map corrects many of the cartographic errors of the previous century and consequently most coastlines accurately rendered. Inland though, much remains confused and only tenuously explored. A beautiful 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Hawaii, New Zealand, and several Polynesian island groups. The sheet contains seven separate maps. The top map, occupying the upper half of the sheet, details the Hawaiian Islands or Sandwich Islands, as they were also known. This particular mapping of Hawaii dates to the 1841 U.S. Exploring Expedition to the Pacific. A second inset map inset in the lower left corner of the Hawaii map details the Samoan Islands. A beautiful 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Australia. Like most of Colton's Australia maps, this map is derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Colton's map covers the entire continent including Tasmania or Van Diemen's Land. Colton's mappings of Australia, updated annually through the 1860s, offer a comprehensive overview of the exploration of the continent's interior. A delightfully whimsical 1846 map of Australia, from a German kinderatlas or children's atlas. The map covers the entire continent of Australia (then known as New Holland) including the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), Caroline Islands, New Zealand and New Guinea. The whole is surrounded by a wide border featuring charming vignettes meant to illustrate the peoples and cultures of the region. A fine example of Adam and Charles Black's 1840 map of Australia and New Zealand. The map covers from the East Indies to the Lord Auckland Islands and the Chatam Islands of New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean. It includes New Holland or Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania (then known as Van Diemen�s Island), Papua New Guinea and Melanesia. An interesting map issued just as most of the Earth's non-polar shore has been explored. A fine first edition example of M. Lapie�s 1830 map of Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia, and the East India Islands. This map covers from Southeast Asia eastward as far as the remote Polynesian islands of Elisabeth and Henderson, and from Japan Southwards to include all of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. A fine example of George Vancouver�s 1799 view sheet depicting various coastal profile views of Australia and New Zealand. One of the great navigator George Vancouver�s most important and influential maps, this is Vancouver�s 1799 mapping of southwestern Australia and New Zealand. Though less well known than his historic mapping of the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver�s work in Australia and New Zealand is no less significant. Vancouver was commissioned to examine �that extent of coast of the south-west side of New Holland, which in the present age appears a real blot in geography. This is Karl von Spruner�s 1855 historical map of Australia and Polynesia, with an overview of discoveries and colonization. Covers the area from Australia to California (in the upper right corner), and from China and Japan in the north to New Zealand, Auckland and Macquarie Islands in the south. Dates of discovery and discoverers names appear throughout, making this map is invaluable to anyone researching the history of discovery in Polynesia and Melanesia. A fine example of Rigobert Bonne and Guilleme Raynal�s 1780 map of the East Indies. Covers from the Malay peninsula to Australia inclusive of Sumatra, Java, Singapore, Borneo, New Guinea, and northern Australia (Nouv. Holland). Identifies the strait of SinCapura, but mot the Island of Singapore. The southern shores of New Guinea are only partially explored and here have been left blank. A beautiful first edition example of A. J. Johnson�s 1861 map of Australia. This is the first edition and earliest state in the Johnson Australia series. Depicts the continent with good detail along the coast and a largely unexplored interior. Shows the Torrens Basin, the Stony Desert, Traveler's Valley, and the extant of Sturt's inland exploration. Tables in the corners show references to various counties in each provinces. A beautiful example of Finley's important 1827 map of Asia. Depicts from the Black Sea and Arabia eastward to the Behring Strait and Papua New Guinea. Includes Australia (New Holland) and the East India Islands with Asia, as was common in this period. The Land of Liakhov, more widely known as the Legendary Ivory Islands, appear in the Russian Arctic. This is the c. 1849 Edward Stanford edition of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge's historic map of Western Australia and Tasmania or Van Diemen's Land. Essentially two maps on one sheet. The leftmost map details western Australia from Melbourne south around Sussex to Stirling and Plantagenet. Notes numerous counties, roadways, geographical features, and more. The right hand map is a large detail of Van Diemen's Island or Tasmania. A beautiful example of A. J. Johnson�s 1862 map of Australia. One of the earlier states in the Johnson Australia series, this map depicts the continent with good detail along the coast and a largely unexplored interior. Shows the Torrens Basin, the Stony Desert, Traveler's Valley, and the extant of Sturt's inland exploration. Tables in the corners show references to various counties in each provinces. An uncommon and extremely attractive 1852 map of Oceania by J. G. Barbie du Bocage. Includes Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia and Malaysia. Australia is described as �pays inconnu� and alternately labeled �New Holland�. Hawaii shown as the �Sandwich Islands�. Features a beautiful frame style border. Prepared by J. G. Barbie du Bocage for publication as plate no. 25 in Maison Basset�s 1852 edition of the Atlas Illustre . This a wonderful example of John Thompson�s 1814 Map of Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and parts of Polynesia. Extends from Western Australia and the Celebes eastward as far as New Caledonia and the Fiji Islands. Extends southward as far as New Zealand and Chatham Island. Notes the discoveries of important explorers in the region including Captain Grant, Captain Bandin, Captain Cook, Captain Flinders, Captain Bass, Captain Dampier, and others. A beautiful example of the American map publisher Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr.�s 1872 map of the Pacific, including Australia, Polynesia, Melanesia and Malaysia. Covers the region in considerable detail with parts of North America and Asia included. Extends as far north as the Aleutian Islands and as far south as New Zealand. Inset in the lower right quadrant depicts the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands.
