1845 Ewing Map of Australia and Polynesia

This is a lovely example of Thomas Ewing's 1845 map of Australia and Polynesia. The map covers from the southern coast of China south to include New Zealand, and east to the Marquesas Islands. It includes Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania (then known as Van Diemenâs Island), Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Melanesia. Various rivers, mountains, islands and several other topographical details are noted with relief shown by hachure. This is a fine 1874 map of the Pacific Ocean, including Australia, Polynesia, Melanesia and Malaysia by Ambroise Tardieu. It covers the region in considerable detail with parts of North America and Asia included. Extends as far north as Japan and south to include Auckland Island and New Zealand. This map depicts the continent of Australia with good detail along the coast with a largely unexplored interior. This is a stunning large format Japanese map of Australia dating to World War II. Issued in 1943, the map covers the entirety of the continent with color coding according to state. Offers superb detail regarding both topographical and political elements. Notes cities, roads, trade routes on air, sea and land, and uses shading to display oceanic depths. While Allied World War II maps of this region are fairly common it is extremely rare to come across their Japanese counterparts. One of the earliest obtainable maps of the city of Sydney, Australia, this is an 1808 German edition of an 1802 manuscript Map by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur's. The map covers from Darling Harbour to Dawes Batter and from Woolloomooloo to Brickfields. At the bottom of the plan there is a numbered index identifying 38 important buildings. In addition the map note roads, buildings, windmills, gardens, orchards, gallows, brickfields, and the cemetery. This is an impressive 1860 elephant folio map of Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia and the Pacific Ocean by A. H. Dufour. It covers from Burma (Myanmar) east as far as Chile and from Japan south to New Zealand. Although the interiors of the continents remain blank, the coastal regions are highly detailed. Numerous islands of Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia are noted. Five insets are features along the bottom border of the map. This is a beautiful 1851 example of John Tallis and John Rapkin's 1851 map of Australia. It covers the entire continent of Australia along with Tasmania or as it was known at the time, Van Diemen's Island. An interesting map issued just as most of the earth's non-polar shore has been explored. Gone are many of the errors of the previous century with the coastlines accurately rendered. Inland though, much remained unexplored. This is a scarce 1851 example of John Tallis and John Rapkin's 1851 map of Western Australia. It covers southwestern Western Australia from Champion Bay south around Sussex to Doubtful Island Bay. This map records the early settlements of the United Kingdom in the western part of Australia. It notes numerous counties, roadways, rivers, geographical features, and more. Swan River is identified. The Swan River Colony including Perth was settled by the British in 1829. This is an impressive 1851 Tallis map of Van Diemen's Island or Tasmania. The map covers the entire island of Tasmania in considerable detail noting towns, lakes, mountain ranges and other topographical features. Van Diemen's Land was colonized by the British as a Penal Colony under the name 'Van Diemen's Land', referring to the Dutch East India Company governor who sponsored Tasman's historic 1642 discovery of the island. This is a beautiful example of John Tallis and John Rapkin's 1851 map of South Australia, Australia. Centered on the Spencer Gulf, it covers the southeastern part of the state of South Australia from Lake Torrens to Kangaroo Island and Bonny Wells. This map depicts the area during the early years of settlement in the only state to be settled by free settlers. The map includes beautiful illustration by H. Warren depicting Adelaide, natives of Catamaran, a Nymphicus, and an Australian dog. This is a fine 1851 John Tallis map of New South Wales, Australia. The map covers eastern Australia from the Great Sandy Island south past Sydney to Cape Howe. It also extends a considerable distance inland despite the region being only tenuously mapped. This map was issued in the same year as Victoria became an independent colony separate from New South Wales in July, 1851. This is a scarce 1851 map of Victoria or Port Phillip, Australia by John Tallis. The map covers Victoria from Discovery Bay east past Melbourne to Mallacoota (Mallagoota). It also extends a considerable distance inland despite the region being only tenuously mapped. Victoria on this map is identified as 'Australia Felix' (the early name given to the lush green pastures of western Victoria). This is a fine 1957 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of Wake Island in the Northern Pacific Ocean. It covers the coral atoll just north of Marshall Islands and the waters surrounding it. The Wake atoll is an unorganized, unincorporated territory of the United States managed by the United States Air Force. Verso of this chart features legends and a world aeronautical chart index. This chart was published by the USAF Aeronautical Chart and Information Service, Washington 25, D.C. This is a scarce 1951 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of Pagan Island, part of the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It covers from Maug Islands to Farallon de Medinilla in northern Mariana Island chain, including the Maug Islands, Asuncion Island, Agrihan Island, Pagan Island, Alamagan Island, Guguan Island, Sarigan Island, Anatahan Island and Farallon de Medinilla. Verso of this chart features legends and a world aeronautical chart index. This is a scarce 1951 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of Maug Islands, a group of three small uninhabited islands which are part of the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It covers Maug Islands and Farallon de Pajaros Island or Urracas Island in the northern Mariana Island chain. Verso of this chart features legends and a world aeronautical chart index. This chart was published by the USAF Aeronautical Chart and Information Service, and was issued as chart no. 609. This is a scarce 1957 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of Yap or Wa'ab Island, part of the Caroline Islands in the Western Pacific Ocean. It covers the four islands of Yap as well as the surrounding waters. The chart identifies the Velasco Reef, the Ngaruangl Reef and Island, Kayangel Islands, Ngulu Atoll and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (United States). Verso of this chart features legends and a world aeronautical chart index. This is a scarce 1958 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of the Ulithi Atoll in the Caroline Islands of the western Pacific Ocean. It covers Ulithi Atoll, one of the largest in the world, including all its islands as well as the surrounding waters. The chart identifies Sorol Atoll, Faraulep Atoll, Earl Dalhousie Bank and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (United States). During the end of the Second World War, the U.S. An iconic 1825 lithograph illustrating the South Sea Whale Fishery. This view was engraved by T. Sutherland based upon a painting by W. J. Huggins, official Marine Painter to his Majesty. The illustration express the excitement, richness, romance, and brutality of the whaling trade. In this image the sailors of the HMS Amilia Wilson do battle with numerous Sperm Wales with the island of Bouro in the background. This is a finely detailed first edition 1794 map of Asia and Australia by Robert Wilkinson. Wilkinson's map covers from the Russian Arctic to the Indian Ocean and from Madagascar to New South Wales and New Guinea. Here Asia is divided into various geographical and political zones, including Arabia, Hindoostan (India), Southeast Asia, China, Persia, and Tibet, and the Tartaries. An exceptional 1691 nautically styled map of the Pacific Ocean by the Venetian cartographer Vincenzo Maria Coronelli. Coronelli's map covers the Pacific from Japan to New Zealand and from New Guinea to Tiera Del Fuego and the Yucatan. The map focuses on the new discoveries in the Pacific by Dutch, French, and Spanish, and as such is styled as nautical chart with heavy coastal but only limited inland detail. This is a fine example of the 1840 Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge or S.D.U.K. map of the islands of the Pacific Ocean or Polynesia.
