1755 Kitchin Four Panel Map of Europe

A curious and uncommon three panel 1755 wall map of Europe by the English publisher M. Postlethwayte. Postlethwayte commissioned the well-known engraver Thomas Kitchen to compile this map based upon earlier maps by Vaugondy, d'Anville, and others. A decorative title cartouche in the upper right quadrant of Plate 1 features various nautical elements against a baroque monument bearing the map's title. The present example is on four panels. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Europe-postlethwayte-1755>... more

The map covers the continent in its entirety from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ural Mountains and from North Cape in Norway to the Mediterranean Sea. It includes Spain, Portugal, Turkey in Europe, European Russia, Austria, Germany, France, Ireland, Great Britain, Scandinavia and Italy. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Europe-maltebrun-1828>... more

1828 Malte-Brun Map of the Eastern Hemisphere (Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia)

This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of the Eastern Hemisphere. It covers Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and the East Indies. Although 'New Holland' officially changed its name to Australia in 1824, it is here referred to by its older Dutch name. The interiors of Africa and Asia here follow archaic geographical conventions - giving evidnece to the general lack of knowledge about these regions in the early 19th century. The interior of Australia is entirely unexplored. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/EasternHemisphere-maltebrun-1828>... more

H. Lloyd map or chart of the world on Mercator's Projection. The map is centered on the American continent and a portion of Asia is duplicated to show its connection with the United States. The Antarctic continent is shown only sketchily as 'Supposed Southern Continent', representing the relatively primitive state of Antarctic exploration during this time. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/World-lloyd-1862>... more
