1775 Mannevillette Nautical Chart or Map of the Coast of Burma (Myanmar)

This is a scarce 1775 nautical chart or maritime map of the coast of Burma or Pegu or Myanmar. Composed by Jean-Baptiste d'Apres de Mannevillette, this map covers the Gulf of Martaban and the coast of Myanmar from the Ayeyarwady region east as far as the city of Martaban (modern day Mottama). The basic cartography of this map dates to Mannevillette's voyages as pilot for the Compagnie des Indies in the early 1700s. It was originally published in Paris in 1745. This is a beautiful 1751 map of India and Southeast Asia by Robert de Vaugondy. It details the Indian subcontinent as well as much of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malay and Singapore. It also includes most of Tibet and parts of China. The map offers some offshore detail particularly in the vicinity of the Maldives and off the coast of Thailand. The island of Singapore is specifically identified. This is a lovely example of the Thomas Ewing's 1845 map of India and Pakistan. It covers the Indian subcontinent from the Indian Caucasus Mountains to the Indian Ocean and includes Ceylon or Sri Lanka and part of Kabul in Afghanistan. The map is coded with outline color according to territories under British Possession, territories under British influence by tribute protection and independent states. This is a scarce and beautiful 1786 map of India and Sri Lanka by Robert de Vaugondy. It covers the Indian subcontinent from Independent Tartary south to include Ceylon and the Maldives and from Persia east as far as Aracan in the east. It offers extraordinary detail throughout, with numerous notations on matters geographical, historical, and cultural. Shows roads, cities, mountain ranges, lakes and rivers with territories depicted by outline color. A highly appealing 1574 map of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, or as it was then known, Tapobrana. The first mention of Tapobrana is in the Geographia of Claudius Ptolemy. Today, Ptolemy's Taprobana is considered by some scholars to be entirely mythological and by others to be a wild misinterpretation of any one of several islands, including Sumatra and Ceylon. This is a beautiful 1874 map of the Indian Subcontinent by Ambroise Tardieu. It covers the entire subcontinent from the Himalayas south as far as Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and from Sindh as far east as Burma. The modern day nations of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Burma and parts of Thailand, Tibet and Afghanistan are included. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Maldives and the Lakshadweep Islands are also identified. An attractive and scarce 1600 map of the East Indies by Johann Bussemacher and Matthias Quad. Cartographically derived from Ortelius' slightly earlier map of the same region, this map covers from Arabia east to the Americas and New Guinea and from northern China and Japan to Java, including all of modern day India, China, Japan, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Nepal, Tibet, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, as well as parts of New Guiana, America, Arabia, and (possibly?!) Australia. This is an attractive example of Thomas Cowperthwait and S. A. Mitchell's 1854 map of India. It covers the Indian subcontinent in considerable detail, with princely states and British possessions color coded. An inset in the lower right hand quadrant details the Delta of the Ganges River. The whole is engraved and colored in Mitchell's distinctive style with green border work and vivid pastels. This is a beautiful 1943 or Showa 18 map of northern India issued by the Japanese during World War II. It covers all of northern India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The map offers superb detail regarding topographic and political features and notes cities, roads, and trade routes on air, sea and land. Shading is used to display oceanic depths. This map was issued before India gained independence from the British and hence, Pakistan is shown to be part of India. This is a fine 1957 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of the Little Andaman Island and vicinity, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India located in the Indian Ocean. It covers the South Andaman Island, North Sentinel Island, Rutland Island, Havelock Island, Neill Island, Little Andaman Island, Car Nicobar Island, Camorta Island, Teressa Island, Trinkat Island and the Tillanchong Island. This is a scarce 1954 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of the south India. It covers from Thiruvannamalai south to Kanyakumari. Important cities of Madurai, Coimbatore, Cochin, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, etc. are noted throughout. The map is highly detailed and noted towns, cities, rivers, lakes, capes, bays, roads, railways, and other hydrographical and topographical features essential for the air pilot. This is a fine 1954 U.S. Army Air Forces aeronautical chart or map of the Lakshadweep Islands of India. It covers the islands located in the Arabian Sea off the southwestern coast of India and depicts various reefs and islands including Byramgore Reef (Chereapam Reef), Bitra Reef, Peremul Reef, Suheli Par, Chetlat Island, Kiltan Island, Cardamum Island, Pitti Island, Tree Island Agatti Island, Minicoy Island and Kavaratti Island, the capital of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. This is a fine 1958 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of Mt. Victoria and vicinity. It covers the Ganges River Delta from Jessore in modern day Bangladesh (which was part of Pakistan when this map was made) east to Magway and the Irrawady River in Burma or Myanmar including part of southern Mizoram in India. This is an unusual 1956 U.S. Air Force aeronautical chart or map of Lake Erh or Er or Erhai and its vicinity in modern day Yunnan Province of China. The map covers from Dibang in Northeast India east to Lugu Lake in northwest Yunnan and south to Bhamo in Burma or Myanmar. The map is highly detailed, noting warnings, important cities, towns, rivers, roads, railroads as well as other hydrographical and topographical features essential for the air pilot. This is a scarce and beautiful 1791 map of southern India by Robert Wilkinson. It covers from Bombay or Mumbai to Cape Comorin. This exquisite map is absolutely invaluable for those interested in colonial or Indian history, as it shows the boundaries of the territories ceded by Tipu Sultan to the British, Nizam, Maratha or Paishwas following his defeat in the Third Anglo-Mysore War. It also shows the boundaries of Tipu's dominions before the war. This is a lovely 1791 map of India by Robert Wilkinson. Wilkinson's map covers from Kabul and Persia in the northwest, to Cape Comorin, Ceylon and the Maldive Islands in the south, and from 'Thibet' in the northeast to Cape Negrais in what is now Myanmar ('Aracan Pegu' on the map). A fine 1744 map of India and Southeast Asia by the English cartographer Emanuel Bowen. The map covers all of India and Southeast Asia including the modern day nations of India, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Burma (Pegu), Thailand (Siam), Malaysia (Malacca), Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam (Tonquin and Coquinchina), and Laos. Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and parts of China are also included. The map extends south as far as Singapore and the Maldives. This is a beautiful 1835 map of India by the important American mapmaker T. G. Bradford. It covers the subcontinent from Little Tibet and Cashmere south to Sri Lanka or Ceylon and from the mouth of the Indus to Birmah (Burma or Myanmar). The Maldives and the Lakshadweep Islands (Laccadive) are included. The modern day countries of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Burma are included. A seminal map of extreme significance. This is the first Japanese printed map to depict the world, including Europe and America, from a Buddhist cosmographical perspective. Printed by woodblock in 1710 (Hoei 7), this map was composed by the Buddhist monk Rokashi Hotan. This fascinating hand colored 1816 map by Edinburgh cartographer John Thomson depicts southern India. Covers from Bombay in the North to the northern part of Ceylon or Sir Lanka. The map is color coded according to the figures that dominated each region. British controlled areas are red, the territory of Nabob of Oude is orange, the Berar Rajah is green, the regions controlled by the King of Candy are brown, etc. Overall a spectacularly highly detailed map of this fascinating region.
