<title>1828 Malte-Brun Map of India (Hindoostan)</title>
<description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/India-maltebrun-1828"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.geographicus.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/S/India-maltebrun-1828-S.jpg" alt="antique map" title="Antique &amp; Rare Maps" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of India or Hindoostan.  The map covers the entire subcontinent from the Gobi Desert to Sri Lanka (Ceylon).  The Maldives and the Lakshadweep Islands (Laccadivas) are included.  Though there is no specific reference to British dominance in the region, most of India had, at this juncture, had fallen under the control of the British East India Company. <title>1755 Postlethwayte Four Part Map of Turkey, Arabia, Persia, India and Tartary</title>
<description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/AsiaWest-postlethwayte-1755"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.geographicus.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/S/AsiaWest-postlethwayte-1755-S.jpg" alt="antique map" title="Antique &amp; Rare Maps" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; A curious and uncommon four panel wall map 1755 map of India, Persia, and Arabia by the English publisher M. Postlethwayte.  Published in four separate panels, this map can be either joined as a single massive map as assembled, as above, in separate panels.  As a whole the map centers on Persia, covering from Istanbul to eastern India and Tibet, and from the Black Sea to the Maldives.  Postlethwayte derived this map from the influential French cartographer J. B. Centered on the Indravati River, the map covers from Chanda District in Hyderabad to the Jeypur estate (Jeypore) in Orissa.  Inset map of the region is included in the lower right quadrant.  Various rivers, towns, cities and other topographical features are identified.  Relief is shown by hachure. Like most of Colton's Asia maps, this map was derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson.  Covers the subcontinent from Tibet to Ceylon (Sri Lanka).  The map is divided into Bombay, Scinde, Punjab, Nepal, Bhutan, the Bengal Presidency, Madras and Ceylon. Covers the entire island of Ceylon from north to south, inclusive of the Isle de Calpetin, Isle Manar, and a group of small islands on the northwest shore.  The well-defined coastlines detail capes, bays, and points as well as noting harbors including Colombo, Trinquemale, Chilaw, Negambo, Pamene. A fine example of De L'Isle's work this map covers the entire island of Ceylon as well as the surrounding seas and parts of adjacent India. <title>1832 Lapie Map of Asia</title>

Lapie’s 1832 map of Asia.   In the early 19th century Asia was coming under increasingly imperial European sway.  In India full British rule allowed England to attain naval and trade supremacy throughout the eastern hemisphere.  Using India as a springboard, the English the traded wool and Indian cotton for Chinese tea and textile.
