1828 Malte-Brun Map of India (Hindoostan)

This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of India or Hindoostan. The map covers the entire subcontinent from the Gobi Desert to Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The Maldives and the Lakshadweep Islands (Laccadivas) are included. Though there is no specific reference to British dominance in the region, most of India had, at this juncture, had fallen under the control of the British East India Company. Various, important rivers, islands, cities and other topographical details are noted. A curious and uncommon four panel wall map 1755 map of India, Persia, and Arabia by the English publisher M. Postlethwayte. Published in four separate panels, this map can be either joined as a single massive map as assembled, as above, in separate panels. As a whole the map centers on Persia, covering from Istanbul to eastern India and Tibet, and from the Black Sea to the Maldives. Postlethwayte derived this map from the influential French cartographer J. B. B. This is a fine example of the 1879 Stanford Map of the Bustar Dependency (Bastar State) in central India. Centered on the Indravati River, the map covers from Chanda District in Hyderabad to the Jeypur estate (Jeypore) in Orissa. Inset map of the region is included in the lower right quadrant. Various rivers, towns, cities and other topographical features are identified. Relief is shown by hachure. Notes the regions inhabited by regional tribes, including the Marias and Gottars. This is an uncommon 1588 Ptolemaic map of India issued for Girolamo Ruscelli's Italian edition of the Geografia di Tolomeo . Cartographically Ruscelli based this map on interpretations of Claudius Ptolemy's Geographica by Bernard Sylvanus and Sebastian Munster. The map covers the regions between the Indus River valley and the Ganges and from the Himalayas. This is an uncommon 1588 Ptolemaic map of Persia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan issued for Girolamo Ruscelli's Italian edition of the Geografia di Tolomeo . Cartographically Ruscelli based this map on interpretations of Claudius Ptolemy's Geographica by Bernard Sylvanus and Sebastian Munster. The map covers the regions between the ancient Parthia and the Indus River valley and between Aria (Herat), and the Indian Ocean. A monumental and highly detailed 1786 map of India, Persia, and Arabia by the Austrian cartographer F. A. Scharembl. Centered on Persia, this map covers from Istanbul to eastern India and Tibet, and from the Black Sea to the Maldives. Schraembl derived this map from the influential French cartographer J. B. B. d'Anville's similar map of 1751, which here has been re-engraved, updated, and translated into German. A beautiful example of the legendary map publisher Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr.�s 1872 map of India, Southeast Asia, Tibet and China. Features the entire sub-continent as well as all of Southeast Asia. Includes the modern day nations of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, and Malaysia, Tibet and China. Identifies both the Great Wall and the Grand Canal in China. An excellent 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of India. Like most of Colton's Asia maps, this map was derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Covers the subcontinent from Tibet to Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The map is divided into Bombay, Scinde, Punjab, Nepal, Bhutan, the Bengal Presidency, Madras and Ceylon. An inset map in the lower right quadrant shows British claims in Burma (Pegu) and Southeast Asia. This is a fine example of Bellin's 1750 map of Ceylon or Sri Lanka to illustrate Provost's Histoire Generale des Voyages . Covers the entire island of Ceylon from north to south, inclusive of the Isle de Calpetin, Isle Manar, and a group of small islands on the northwest shore. The well-defined coastlines detail capes, bays, and points as well as noting harbors including Colombo, Trinquemale, Chilaw, Negambo, Pamene. Also shows many small towns and villages throughout the inland. The Dezauche issue of Guillaume de L'Isle's fine map of Ceylon or Sri Lanka. A fine example of De L'Isle's work this map covers the entire island of Ceylon as well as the surrounding seas and parts of adjacent India. As this map was issued control of Ceylon and the rich spice and tea trade that the island represented was hotly contested between the Dutch East Company and the British India. A fine first edition example of M. Lapie�s 1832 map of Asia. In the early 19th century Asia was coming under increasingly imperial European sway. In India full British rule allowed England to attain naval and trade supremacy throughout the eastern hemisphere. Using India as a springboard, the English the traded wool and Indian cotton for Chinese tea and textile. By the 1830s oversaturation of the Chinese market slackened Chinese demand for most British products. A beautiful map of India in antiquity issued by J. Janvier c. 1750. This map covers the subcontinent from the Indus to the Ganges and as far south as Ceylon (Sri Lanka), which is here identified as Taprobana. Shows various speculative mountain ranges running through central India as well as several early Indian Empires citied in various questionable sources dating from antiquity. A finely detailed first edition 1794 map of southern India by Robert Wilkinson. Covers from Mumbai to Cape Comorin. This exquisite map is absolutely invaluable for those interested in colonial or Indian history, as it shows political boundaries of British, Karnatic, Nizam, Mahratta, and Tipu Sultan's possessions just after the defeat of Tipu, as well as the location of different peoples or castes. This is a staggering wall size map of India and Ceylon originally issued in 1768 by Thomas Jeffreys. Covers the Indian subcontinent from Mekran in the west to Assam and Aracan in the east, and from Bhutan in the north, south to Ceylon and the Maldives. Offers extraordinary detail throughout, with numerous notations on matters geographical, historical, and cultural. An extremely attractive large format 1775 maritime map or nautical chart of the port of Trincomalee, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) by Jean-Baptiste d'Apr�s de Mannevillette. Trincomalee is natural deep water port on the east coast of Sri Lanka, about 110 miles northeast of Kandy. It is one of the main centers of Tamil speaking culture in Ceylon. Historically referred to as Gokanna or Gokarna it has been a sea port that has played a major role in maritime and international trading history of Sri Lanka. An extremely attractive large format 1775 maritime map or nautical chart of southern India and Ceylon by Jean-Baptiste d'Apr�s de Mannevillette. This chart covers the southern tip of India including the Malabar and Coromandel coasts as well as the Island of Ceylon ( Sri Lanka ) and the Maldives. Extends northwards as far as Cabo and Madras and eastwards as far as the Maldives and Laccadive Islands. A beautiful 1852 map of India and Southeast Asia by Victor Levasseur. Features the entire sub-continent as well as all of Southeast Asia. Includes the modern day nations of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, and Malaysia. Identifies major cities, rivers, mountains and various other topographical features. Features a neoclassical decorative border. Prepared by V. Levasseur for publication as plate no. A beautiful example of Rigobert Bonne's decorative map of northern India. Covers the northern region of subcontinent from Dabul in the south, to its border with Tibet in the north. Also shows what is modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan in the West, and China in the east. To the east is Bangladesh. Includes a detailed inset showing the area around the mouth of the Ganges with Calcutta in the center. Names a number of important Indian cities and river systems. A fine 1799 map India, here labeled Hindoostan, by the English map publisher Clement Cruttwell. Covers the entire subcontinent and is divided into the various princely states. Though there is no specific reference to British dominance in the region, most of India had, at this juncture, fallen under the control of the British East India Company. Includes rivers, political boundaries, important cities, ports and gulfs. Mountains and other topographical features shown by profile. A fine example of Rigobert Bonne and Guilleme Raynal�s 1780 map of northern India. Covers the northern part of India from Kandahar (Candahar) and Kashmir (Cachemire) south as far as Decan. Includes the areas claimed by the Mogol Empire, as well as adjacent parts of Tibet and Nepal.
