Centered on the Jordan River Valley, this map covers from the Mediterranean to the Biblical deserts of Moab and the Amalekites. Israel is divided according to the Biblical Tribes of Israel and their neighbors. The map identifies both factual and fictional locations including Jerusalem, Tyre, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee or Lake Tiberius, and on the fictional side the ‘Desert of Evil’, and other sites. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/IsraelPalestine-martineau-1700>... more

1854 Mitchell Map of Palestine, Israel, or the Holy Land

A fine example of Thomas Cowperthwait and S. A. Mitchell’s 1854 map of Palestine, Israel, or the Holy Land. This map is a curious combination of a contemporary and a historic map. The color coding details the region as it may have appeared in Biblical times, with the lands claimed by the Tribes of Israel noted. The Ten Cities of the Roman Decapollis are also identified in the lower right. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Palestine-mitchell-1854>... more

1730 Stoopendaal Map of Canaan (Israel, Palestine, Holy Land)

This is a splendid early example of Bastiaan Stoopendaal and Jacob Keur’s c. 1730 map of Canaan (Israel or Palestine). Oriented to the west, this map covers the Holy Land from the Mediteranean to just beyond the Jordan River. This map purports to illustrate the Holy Land as it appeared at the time of Jesus Christ; however, numerous elements from earlier periods have been inherited from Stoopendaal’s various source maps. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Canaan-stoopendaal-1730>... more

1670 Bockler Map of Holyland, Persia, etc with Adam and Eve

An extremely rare plan of the Holy Land issued in Wittenberg, Germany, around 1670 for Martin Luther’s Protestant translation of the Bible. This rare Bible contained several early maps of the Holy Land drawn by Georg Andreas Bockler. All examples of Bockler’s work are extremely rare and are almost always, as in our example, exhibit condition issues. This particular map depicts the Near East from Cyprus to the Persian Gulf extending as far north as Armenia and as far south as the Red Sea. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Canaan-bockler-1670>... more

1790 Historical Map of Colonies of the Descendants of Ham

This is a gorgeously colored c. 1790 map that purports to show the colonies of the descendants of Ham. Ham appears in Genesis where he is of the sons of Noah. Following the flood Ham walks into Noah’s tent and sees his sleeping father naked. When Noah awoke and heard of this misdeed he curses Ham and his descendants – who settled in Egypt and the near east. This map covers from from Mauritania in the west to Arabia and Persia in the east, Italy in the north and Ethiopia in the south. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/DescendantsHam-unknown-1790>... more
