1747 Bowen Map of the Solar System showing 5 Comets

An unusual solar system and comet map issued by Emanuel Bowen in 1747. The map shows the solar system with each planet given a circular orbit. The real highlight of the map is Bowen's identification of, in his words, '5 remarkable comets'. He does not name any of the comets, but does give dates and orbital periods, as then known: 1337 - ????. Most likely the Perseid Comet. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/SolarSystemComets-bowen-1747>... more

F. Reitz depicting the Battle of Dogger Bank during the American Revolutionary War. This view beautifully depicts the bloody battle between the Dutch and English ships during the fourth Anglo-Dutch War. Several Dutch and English fleets (with flags flying from the mast) are illustrated. Rips appear in sails as ships are damaged by canon fire. A sinking ship with fleeing survivors appears in the foreground. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/DoggerBankBattle-reitz-1782>... more

It consists of a custom box containing six jigsaw puzzle maps: South America, France, Europe, Asia, the World in hemispheres, and North America with the United States. This is the largest puzzle map we have seen, being nearly 50% larger than most other examples in this style. Each map is mounted on a board and dissected as a jigsaw puzzle. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/PuzzleAtlas-delamarche-1860>... more

1721 Gemelli Map of the Aztec Migration from Aztlan to Chapultapec

This map, supposedly a rendering copied from indigenous sources traces the pilgrimage conceptually and, though hard to follow as a map, embraces both cartographic and spiritual elements. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/AztecMigration2-gemelli-1721>... more

Printed in Arabic, this chart notes the relative elevation of the important mountains of the World. The map is divided into two parts, each with heights and depths listed near the right margin. The depth of what appears to be the ocean floor is also noted. This map was published in Persia in the 19th century. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/MountainsRivers-arabic-1800s>... more

B. Homann and Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr’s important c. 1742 map of the Moon. Essentially a comparative chart, Doppelmayer constructed this map to illustrate the lunar mapping of Johannes Hevelius (left) and Giovanni Battista Riccioli (right). The left hand lunar map, composed by Hevelius, is a considered a foundational map in the science of Selenography – or lunar cartography. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/TabulaSelenographicaMoon3-doppelmayr-1707>... more

It features cross-sections between Paris and Colmar, between the Ardennes and the Limousin, in the Pyrenees, between Cumberland and Durham (england), and in Derbyshire. A legend is included below each cross-section. This chart was issued as plate no. 20 in Conrad Malte-Brun's 1837 Atlas Complet du Precis de la Geographie Universelle . <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/GeologicalSections-maltebrun-1837>... more

Measuring some 27 inches high and 271 inches long, this gigantic panoramic diagram charts the history of the world from a Biblical perspective, starting with the creation of Adam in 4004 B.C. and ending in 1881 (though projected into the future as far as 1900). Adams centers his chart on the 'Stream of Time' which is divided into decades and centuries. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/PanoramaofHistory-adams-1881>... more
