After the bursting of the Dot-Com Bubble and the more disastrous United States Housing Bubble (and subsequent sub-prime mortgage crises) most will find the themes of this 18th century map taunting the speculators in the Mississippi Scheme - poverty, sorrow, and despair - quite familiar. The title can be somewhat misleading, suggesting that this map is intended to represent business dealings, but from the content, this item clearly follows in the tradition of early 19th century English allegorical representations of the joys and pitfalls of matrimony. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/MatterofMoney-alegorical-1840>... more

The lengthy title references the preface of Jonathan Swift's satire A Tale of a Tub , published in 1704. In the etching, we see a whale with horns John Bull (based on the personification of England) with a gaping mouth, spouting 'Ridicule' and 'Contempt' towards a packet-boat steered by the new Ministry. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/TubWhale-gillray-1806>... more

This view was engraved by T. Sutherland based upon a painting by W. J. Huggins, official Marine Painter to his Majesty. The illustration express the excitement, richness, romance, and brutality of the whaling trade. In this image the sailors of the HMS Amilia Wilson do battle with numerous Sperm Wales with the island of Bouro in the background. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/SouthSeaWhaleFishery-huggins-1825>... more

Essentially sixteen inset maps on one sheet, the map covers the Azores or Western Isles, Faeroe Isles, Madeira Isles, Canary Islands, Princes Island, Anno Bon, Fernando Po, St. Thomas, Ascension Island, St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha Isles, Cape de Verde Isles, Bermuda Isles, Trinidade Isles, Fernando Noronha and the Falkland Islands. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/IslandsAtlantic-sduk-1844>... more

1630 Cloppenburg and Mercator Map of Bermuda

A scarce c. 1630 small format map of Bermuda by Johannes Cloppenburg. Based upon an earlier maps by Gerard Mercator and John Speed, this map shows the whole of Bermuda. Around the edges of the map parts of neighboring islands and the mainland of North America peak out - although admittedly wildly out of proportion to the size of Bermuda. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Bermuda-cloppenburg-1630>... more

1844 Black Map or Chart of the World showing Magnetic Waves

This is a fine example of Adam and Charles Black's 1844 chart of the World's Magnetic Curves of equal variation. The chart depicts the magnetic curves over the entire world, but does not show the isomagnetic lines over any continent except North America. It marks the northern magnetic pole at the Boothia Felix (now the Boothia Peninsula) based on the first expedition by James Clark Ross in 1831. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/MagneticCurves-black-1844>... more
