Composed by Jean-Baptiste d'Apres de Mannevillette, this map covers the Gulf of Martaban and the coast of Myanmar from the Ayeyarwady region east as far as the city of Martaban (modern day Mottama).   The basic cartography of this map dates to Mannevillette's voyages as pilot for the  Compagnie des Indies  in the early 1700s. Howakil Bay is a large bite in the coast of Eritrea.  It is a maze of small islands, reefs, and shoals that even in the early 20th were imperfectly mapped.  In the  periploi  of antiquity Howakil Bay was known as Opsian Bay.
