1764 Bellin Map of New York City

A beautiful example of J. N. Bellin's important 1764 map of New York City. The map depicts what is today the Financial District at the southern tip of Manhattan between the Hudson River and the 'Canal de la Longue Isle' or East River. Bellin's plan of New York is taken directly from an inset attached to J. B. L. Franquelin's 1693 regional manuscript map. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NewYork-bellin-1764>... more

B. Smith. It features a lovely view of the New York Harbor from the south, looking across to Manhattan. Castle Williams on Governors Island is visible in the foreground. Countless church towers are visible in the background while many small boats can be seen sailing in the water. This view was engraved by J. B. Neagle as part of Malte-Brun's System of Geography , Vol. I., published in New York by Samuel Walker. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NewYork-maltebrun-1828>... more

Eldridge’s scarce nautical chart or map of the Long Island Sound. Eldridge’s monumentally proportioned chart covers the Long Island Sound from New York City to New London, Connecticut, Race Rock, and Gardiner’s Island. It includes the northern Coast of Long Island, including Shelter Island, Gardiner’s Island, and Plum Island, and the southern coast of Connecticut. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/LongIslandSound-eldridge-1895>... more

1876 London Illustrated News View of New York City

A pleasant, simplified view of New York City in 1876, with important buildings numbered and named in the key. After lamenting that New York is not really very American, 'with much of foreign ingredients,' the London News writer goes on to sigh 'It is, however, the city of New York...that we have to describe.' The view includes Hoboken in foreground, Manhattan in the middle ground, and Brooklyn in the background. Fascinating text sales ads appear on verso. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NewYorkCityView-londonnews-1876>... more

The view depicts parts of downtown New York, near Broadway, the original Stock Exchange, the original Kings College, and Trinity Church, fully engulfed in flames. British soldiers, dressed in their signature red coats are savagely beating the city’s panicked inhabitants while African slaves take advantage of the opportunity to loot the blazing buildings. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/FeuTerribleaNouvelleYorck-haberman-1776>... more

1864 McCloskey Pocket Map of Brooklyn, New York

In the mid-19th century, fueled by the advent of the steam ferry, which made crossing the East River practical, Kings County experienced a massive population burst. Wealthy and poor alike were quick to abandon the dirty and claustrophobic Manhattan for the suburban lands just across the East River. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Brooklyn-mccloskey-1864>... more
