Though variants of this chart appeared earlier, the present example is most likely the first independent issue of this map in its full completed form. This is moreover among the first 19th century charts to depict New York City as we know it today, including Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. Adjacent Jersey City, Newark and Hoboken are also included. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NewYorkBay5-uscs-1866>... more

1801 Mangin-Goerck Plan or Map of New York City

Those who know New York’s shoreline will pause at the perfect blocks and ridged angles of this plan no more accurate today than it was in 1801 when Joseph Mangin first presented it. Mangin, a talented French architect, and Casimir Goerck, an established New York Surveyor, were commissioned by the Common Council of New York to prepare a new regulatory map of the city. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NewYork-mangingoerck-1859>... more

The map coves southern Manhattan from the Battery northwards to 42nd street as well as portions of adjacent Jersey City, Brooklyn, and Williamsburg. In September 1858, months after this view was drawn, the residents of Staten Island, protesting against the expansion of the quarantine station, burned down the entire facility. Some of the abandoned buildings still stand on the northeastern shore of Staten Island. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/StatenIsland-valentine-1859>... more

N. Bellin's important 1764 map of New York City. The map depicts what is today the Financial District at the southern tip of Manhattan between the Hudson River and the 'Canal de la Longue Isle' or east River. Bellin's plan of New York is taken directly from an inset attached to J. B. L. Franquelin's 1693 regional manuscript map. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NewYork-bellin-1764>... more

B. Smith. It features a lovely view of the New York Harbor from the south, looking across to Manhattan. Castle Williams on Governors Island is visible in the foreground. Countless church towers are visible in the background while many small boats can be seen sailing in the water. This view was engraved by J. B. Neagle as part of Malte-Brun's System of Geography , Vol. I., published in New York by Samuel Walker. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NewYork-maltebrun-1828>... more

1652 Blaeu View of New Amsterdam (the earliest obtainable view of New York City)

Issued around 1653 by the Dutch cartographer Joannes Blaeu, this view details the southern tip of Manhattan, then New Amsterdam (Nieuw Amsterdam), as it appeared under the Dutch colonial government. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NieuwAmsterdamManhattan-blaeu-1652>... more
