1899 Landis and Alsop Map and Birds-Eye View of Morristown, New Jersey

An extremely scarce and dramatic large format 1899 view of Morristown, New Jersey. Prepared by the Newark firm of Landis and Alsop, this view depicts Morristown from somewhere high above the eastern part of town looking west. The Morristown Green is located prominently at center. Throughout individual buildings and business are drawn in with impressive attention to detail. A seminal production, this is the first edition, first state, of Thomas Gordon's impressive wall map of New Jersey. This is the first large scale map of New Jersey to be printed in the United States. Gordon's map, issued at the behest of the New Jersey legislature, illustrates the entire state with but 14 counties noted. It further notes towns, cities, townships, mills, forges, taverns and important residences. It also includes portions of Adjacent New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. An attractive 1675 miniature variant on John Speeds rare miniature map of New England and New York issued by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell. This map was included with the popularly termed 'miniature Speed', an octavo version of Speeds great folio atlas. Like its larger cousin, this map was cartographically derived from Jan Jannson's 1651 Belgii Nova but updated with Anglicized nomenclature and toponymy. A fine example of the esteemed 1676 map of New England issued in the Basset and Chiswell edition of John Speed's Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World . Following in the Jansson-Visscher model, this map covers from the coast of Maine in the vicinity of Penobscot to the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays. This, we might add, is marked departure from the model which typically also includes Virginia. A scarce French edition of Louis Evans' highly influential map of the Middle British Colonies, one of the most important maps of the British Colonies to appear in the 18th century. The map covers Louisville on the Ohio River eastward as far as Narragansett Bay and Long Island, northwards as far as Montreal, and south to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, inclusive of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and most of the Ohio River Valley. A significant though often overlooked piece, this is J. B. Homann's c. 1716 map of New England, New York, and New Jersey. Though titled 'Nova Anglia', Homann's map actually covers a much broader area from New France (Canada) to the Delaware Bay, and from Philadelphia to Nova Scotia, inclusive of all of New England, New York, and New Jersey, as well as parts of adjacent Canada and Pennsylvania. An uncommon first edition first state example of Robert de Vaugondy's 1755 map of the Ohio River Valley and eastern seaboard from Maine to Carolina. The map coves from Lake Huron to Brunswick North Carolina and from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean. An inset map in the upper right continues the coastline southwards along the Carolina Coast from Cape Fear to Talbot Island. A fine c. 1756 example of one of Tobias Conrad Lotter�s most iconic maps. This is Lotter's important map of the Middle Atlantic and New England regions during the British colonial period. One of the most desirable, interesting and attractive pre-Revolutionary maps of the Middle English Colonies, particularly New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Lotter's map covers from Lake Ontario in the northwest eastward to the Atlantic and as far south as Maryland, Delaware and the Chesapeake Bay. This is a beautifully detailed version of S. A. Mitchell's 1854 map of New Jersey. Extending vertically northward from Delaware Bay and Cape Bay, it depicts railroads, canals, rivers, State Parks, and bays to reach Pennsylvania on its left and New York on its right. It includes a list of the railroads serving the State on the left border, as well as an inset of a statistical table listing population in various towns, counties and periods on the lower left quadrant. This is Colton's exquisite hand colored and highly detailed 1871 pocket map of New Jersey. It depicts the whole of the state and surrounding areas in splendid detail with particular attention to roads, cities, railroads, rivers and a host of additional topographical features. The map details the state of New Jersey with color coding to define the counties. The Delaware Bay and parts of New York and Pennsylvania are included. This is an exceptional example of the 1851 U.S. Coast Survey's nautical chart or maritime map for New Jersey and the Delaware Bay. It covers the coast line from New York City south through New Jersey to Cape Henlopen, and from the Delaware Bay north, along the Delaware River, as far as Trenton. New York City, Atlantic City, and Philadelphia are identified. Triangulation points throughout the regions as well as all major islands, rivers, and inlets are also shown. This is an unusual triangulation chart of the New York and New Jersey coast line from the scarce 1851 edition of the Superintendent's Report. It covers from the Delaware Bay north to New York City then east along Long Island as far as Block Island. Shows various triangulation points and some of the attached river systems. New York City, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Trenton, Newark, Elizabethtown, and New Haven are noted. This is a lovely 1833 map of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia issued by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge or S.D.U.K. The map covers the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware in full with parts of modern day Virginia and West Virginia. States are color coded with outline color. Several important topographical features including rivers, mountains, lakes, etc. are noted throughout. This is a fine example of Joseph Meyer's 1852 map of the Mid-Atlantic States. It covers New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and Virginia as well as parts of Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. Six inset maps are also included. These feature New York and vicinity, Philadelphia and vicinity, Niagara Falls and vicinity, Albany and vicinity, Pittsburg and vicinity and Baltimore and Washington DC and vicinity. This rare map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey was printed in 1835 by the important American mapmaker T. G. Bradford. It covers the two states in detail, noting rivers, proposed and completed railways and canals, cities, towns and a host of other topographical features, with elevation rendered by hachure. Offers color coding at the county level. Staten Island is marked as part of New Jersey. This map was published as plate no. 33 in Thomas G. A beautiful example of Johnson and Ward's 1863 map of New Jersey. Covers the entire state along with portions of adjacent Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York. Offers color coding according to county and notations for railways, roadways, cities, towns, and river systems. Features the fretwork style border common to Johnson's atlas work from 1863 to 1869. Published by Johnson and Ward as plate no. 31 in the scarce 1863 edition of Johnson's Family Atlas . A beautiful 1848 map of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia issued by the S.D.U.K. The map covers the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware in full with parts of modern day Virginia and West Virginia. Color coded according to state, the map also includes the District of Columbia. Counties are noted with outline color. Several important topographical features including rivers, mountains, lakes, etc. are noted throughout. A scarce first edition of John Thomson's 1817 map of the southeastern part of the United States. The map covers from the Mississippi River eastward to the Atlantic, extending north as far as Lake Erie, and south to northern Florida and the Mississippi River Delta. An unusual 1866 U.S. Coast Survey map of the entrance to Delaware Bay. The map covers the entrance of the bay from Cape May, New Jersey to Assawoman Bay, Delaware. The map offers countless depth soundings throughout as well as excellent coastal detail, especially in Cape Map and along Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay, and Assawoman Bay. An inset in the lower left quadrant focuses on the Delaware Breakwater near Cape Henlopen. A very attractive c. 1750 example of John Thornton and Mount and Page's important nautical chart or maritime map of the eastern coast of North America from Cape Henry to the Mouth of the St. Lawrence. The map includes the coasts of Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland as well as illustrating the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay in full. Shading indicates the various offshore shoals including the Nantucket Shoals, St.
