1850 Cruchley Map of Scandinavia: Norway, Sweden and Denmark

This is a fine example of G. F. Cruchley's 1850 map of Scandinavia, including Norway, Sweden and Denmark. It covers from the Arctic south to Holstein and east as far as the Gulf of Finland. As this map was being drawn Scandinavia was�in the midst of a prolonged period of peace and prosperity that led to a cultural and population boom. This is a beautiful map of Denmark from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas . It covers all of Denmark inclusive of the Duchy of Holstein and the islands of Zeeland, Funen and Laland. The Kattegat (Cattegat) is also identified. Hall notes the site for the 1801 Battle of Copenhagen under Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson and the 1807 Battle of Copenhagen under Admiral James Gambier. This is a beautiful example of Rand McNally and Company's 1892 map of Denmark. It covers all of Denmark including the Duchy of Holstein. The Cattegat is also identified. Three inset maps detailing Iceland, the Isle Bornholm and the Faeroe Islands are included. As this map was being printed Scandinavia was in the midst of a prolonged period of peace and prosperity that led to a cultural and population boom. This is a beautiful example of Rand McNally and Company's 1891 map of Sweden and Norway. It covers from Finmark in Norway to Gothland in Sweden. During the latter half of the 19th century, due to Sweden's predominantly agricultural and hence poor economy, large numbers of its population immigrated to the United States. Color coded according to regions and territories, the map notes several towns, cities, rivers and various other topographical details with relief shown by hachure. This is a beautiful example of A. J. Johnson and R. Browning's 1861 map of Scandinavia and Prussia. It depicts all of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Prussia, as well as parts of estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. There are two decorative city views, Stockholm in the upper left quadrant and Cologne in the lower right. Various towns, cities, railways, rivers and several other topographical features are noted with relief shown by hachure. This is a fine example of Adam and Charles Black's 1851 map of Denmark. It covers all of Denmark inclusive of the Duchy of Holstein. Three inset maps detailing Iceland, the Isle Bornholm and the Faeroe Islands are included. The upper left quadrant features a beautiful engraving of 'Chateau de Kronborgh' (Kronborg Castle). This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of Sweden and Norway. The map covers from the Arctic Sea south to Denmark and east as far as the Gulf of Finland. The legendary and semi-mythical whirlpool known as the Maelstrom (Mahl Strom) in northwestern Norway is noted. This legendary whirlpool was the inspiration for edgar Allen Poe's classic tale 'Descent into the Maelstrom'. In reality, it is a periodic and powerful current caused by tidal variations in the region. This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of Denmark. The map also features six inset maps detailing Iceland, Swealand, Denmark, Thrond, and Norway's Western Isles. The Kalmar Union consolidated the autonomous nations of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden (including Finland) under a single monarch. A fascinating example of the 1853 Perthes map of Sweden and Norway. These include men in a boat fighting sea creatures, a man in a canoe following a walrus, a man chiseling rock, a man riding a sledge being pulled by a reindeer, etc. A delightfully whimsical 1846 map of Denmark, from a German kinderatlas or children's atlas. The map details all of Denmark with its various duchies divided with color coding. The whole is surrounded by a wide border featuring charming vignettes meant to illustrate the peoples and cultures of the region. The upper left corner features a sub-sketch of Iceland. Other illustrations include a ship at sea, a man standing near a lighthouse, an artesian spring, etc. This is Karl von Spruner's 1854 historical map of Scandinavia just prior to the Treaty of Fredrikshamn. The map covers Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland and includes parts of Russia. On September 17, 1809, Sweden and the Russian empire signed the Treaty of Fredrikshamn, a peace agreement that concluded the Finnish War. Under the Treaty of Fredrikshamn Sweden ceded Finland and parts of the province of Laponia and the Aland Islands to Russia.
