1845 Ewing Map of Scandinavia (Norway and Sweden)

This is a lovely example of Thomas Ewing's 1845 map of Scandinavia, including Norway and Sweden. It covers from the Arctic south to the Baltic Sea and east as far as the Gulf of Finland. Throughout, the map identifies various cities, towns, rivers and an assortment of additional topographical details. Of particular interest is the Loffoden Maelstrom in northwestern Norway. This legendary whirlpool was the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe's classic tale Descent into the Maelstrom . This is a scarce 1845 Thomas Ewing map of Denmark. It covers all of Denmark inclusive of the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Numerous towns, rivers, roads, mountains and other important topographical features are noted throughout. During the time this map was made, Denmark was on the brink of the First Schleswig War between Prussia, Germany and the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig against the Kingdom of Denmark. This is a beautiful 1874 map of Scandinavia, including Sweden and Norway by Ambroise Tardieu. It covers from the Arctic south to the Baltic Sea and east as far as St. Petersburg. Two insets in the top right quadrant detail Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Throughout, the map identifies various cities, towns, rivers and an assortment of additional topographical details. This is a beautiful 1756 map of Scandinavia by Robert de Vaugondy. It covers Sweden, Norway and Finland along with parts of Denmark and Russia. An inset of Iceland is included in the top left quadrant. This extremely detailed map notes important cities, towns, rivers, mountains, roads and a host of additional topographic features. A highly decorative title cartouche appears in the bottom right quadrant. This is a scarce 1750 map of Denmark by Robert de Vaugondy. It covers all of Jutland and the islands of Zealand, Funen and Lolland. Parts of Sweden and Germany are also included. This extremely detailed map notes important cities, towns, rivers, mountains, roads and a host of additional topographic features. Undersea shoals and reefs are also noted. A highly decorative title cartouche appears in the top right quadrant. Extremely rare, this is a 1791 wall sized nautical chart or maritime map of the Baltic Sea by John Hamilton Moore. The map covers from the Gulf of Bothinia and the coast of Finland south to Pomerania, Prussia, and the Kattegat, and from Denmark east to the Gulf of Livonia. In modern terms, this map covers the Baltic Sea in the vicinity of Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and Denmark. This is a fine example of S. A. Mitchell's 1846 map of Russia. The whole is engraved in Mitchell's distinctive style with green border work and vivid pastels. Political and topographical features are noted and color coded with elevation rendered by hachure. Mitchell's map covers European Russia from the Baltic to the Ural Mountains and from Lapland to the Crimea. An inset table in the lower right quadrant lists the regional governments of Russia. This is a finely detailed 1793 map of Scandinavia, by Robert Wilkinson. It includes Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland (then part of Sweden). It features the Lapland region as a whole, including its provinces in Finland and Sweden and shows the adjacent countries of Russia, as well as the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland. The legendary and semi-mythical whirlpool known as the Maelstrom (Mahlstrom) in northwestern Norway is noted. This is a finely detailed 1793 map of Denmark and Holstein, by Robert Wilkinson. It covers all of Denmark including the Duchy of Holstein. This is a scarce 1852 map of the Duchy of Schleswig. It covers from Fredericia in modern day Denmark south as far as Preetz in Germany. Includes the Fehmarn and Aero Islands. This extremely detailed map notes important cities, towns, rivers, roads, coastal features and other important topographical features. Various battlegrounds are also identified. This is a scarce 1852 map of Sweden by Joseph Meyer. It covers the southern part of Sweden from Lake Siljan south to the Baltic Sea and west as far as Norway. It includes the islands of Gotland, Oland and Ronne. An inset in the bottom right quadrant features the city of Stockholm. The map is extraordinarily detailed and notes numerous cities, towns, islands and various other topographical features. This is a scarce 1852 map of southern Norway by Joseph Meyer. It covers Norway from Levanger in Nord-Trondelag south to the North Sea and east as far as Sweden. Three inset maps of Trondheim, Bergen and Oslo (Christiania). The map is extraordinarily detailed and notes numerous cities, towns, islands, fjords and various other topographical features. It depicts the southern region of Norway in the midst of a prolonged period of peace and prosperity. This is a fine example of Joseph Meyer's 1852 map of Scandinavia, including Norway, Sweden and Denmark. It covers from the Arctic south to Holstein and east as far as Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe. Two insets in the top left quadrant detail Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Towns, rivers, mountains, lakes, and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and regional territories are color coded. Some coastal features are also included. This is a scarce 1754 map of Scandinavia and the Northeast Passage. It covers from Svalbard (Spizberga) south as far as the Ukraine and from Denmark eastward to the White Sea and Russia. The Northeast Passage, much like America's Northwest Passage, was a long sought after sea route through the Arctic that would save European merchantman the expense of rounding Africa in order to access the trade riches of East Asia.
