1828 Malte-Brun Map of Sweden and Norway

This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of Sweden and Norway. The map covers from the Arctic Sea south to Denmark and east as far as the Gulf of Finland. The legendary and semi-mythical whirlpool known as the Maelstrom (Mahl Strom) in northwestern Norway is noted. This legendary whirlpool was the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe's classic tale 'Descent into the Maelstrom'. In reality, it is a periodic and powerful current caused by tidal variations in the region. This is an attractive example of the 1828 Malte-Brun map of Denmark. The map covers all of Denmark inclusive of the Duchy of Holstein. The Kattegat (Cattegat) is also identified. At this time in history, Scandinavia was in the midst of a prolonged period of peace and prosperity that led to a cultural and population boom. Various, important rivers, islands, cities and other topographical details are noted. This is a fascinating example of Karl von Spruner's 1854 historical map of Europe and the Empire of the Norsemen (which means 'People from the North', eventually known as the 'Vikings') from the 8th to the 12th century. The map covers Europe from Greenland to Africa and includes Iceland. An inset map along the left margin details the coasts of North America in the 10th century. This is a fascinating example of the Karl von Spruner's 1854 historical map of Scandinavia and Poland until its reformation. The map covers all of Scandinavia including Finland south as far as Poland. Two inset maps in the bottom left quadrant detail the western part of the province of Gniezno and the province of Lund. The map depicts Scandinavia when, during the 1520s, The Ninety-Five These of Martin Luther reached Holstein and Denmark. This is a fascinating example of Karl von Spruner's 1855 historical map of Scandinavia during the Kalmar Union of 1397. The map covers Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The map also features six inset maps detailing Iceland, Swealand, Denmark, Thrond, and Norway's Western Isles. The Kalmar Union consolidated the autonomous nations of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden (including Finland) under a single monarch. A fascinating example of the 1854 map of Eastern Europe. Centered on Russia, the map covers Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark and parts of European Turkey, Germany, Prussia, Italy and Austria. Russia at this time was under the suzerainty of Tzar Alexander the II. Alexander is best known for his liberal reforms including the Emancipation Reform of 1861. The Emancipation Reform freed Russia's countless serfs and is considered to be the most important event in 19th century Russian history. A fascinating example of the 1853 Perthes map of Sweden and Norway. The map covers from the Arctic Sea south to Denmark and east as far as the Gulf of Finland, including the modern day nations of Sweden, Norway, and parts of adjacent Denmark and Finland. Two inset maps in the lower right quadrant detail Stockholm and environs of Stockholm. Of particular interest is the Lofoten Maelstrom (Malstrom) in northwestern Norway. An excellent 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Sweden and Norway. Like most of Colton's Europe maps, this map was derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. The map covers Sweden and Norway from the Arctic Ocean south to Denmark and east as far as the Gulf of Finland. It also includes parts of adjacent Denmark and Finland. A beautiful 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Denmark. Like most of Colton's Europe maps, this map was derived from an earlier wall map of the World produced by Colton and D. A list along the upper left border notes the counties of Iceland. A delightfully whimsical 1846 map of Scandinavia, from a German kinderatlas or children's atlas. The map details Sweden and Norway divided with color coding. The whole is surrounded by a wide border featuring charming vignettes meant to illustrate the peoples and cultures of the region. These include men in a boat fighting sea creatures, a man in a canoe following a walrus, a man chiseling rock, a man riding a sledge being pulled by a reindeer, etc. A delightfully whimsical 1846 map of Denmark, from a German kinderatlas or children's atlas. The map details all of Denmark with its various duchies divided with color coding. The whole is surrounded by a wide border featuring charming vignettes meant to illustrate the peoples and cultures of the region. The upper left corner features a sub-sketch of Iceland. Other illustrations include a ship at sea, a man standing near a lighthouse, an artesian spring, etc. This is Karl von Spruner's 1854 historical map of Scandinavia just prior to the Treaty of Fredrikshamn. The map covers Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland and includes parts of Russia. On September 17, 1809, Sweden and the Russian Empire signed the Treaty of Fredrikshamn, a peace agreement that concluded the Finnish War. Under the Treaty of Fredrikshamn Sweden ceded Finland and parts of the province of Laponia and the Aland Islands to Russia. An uncommon and extremely attractive 1852 map of Scandinavia by A. Vuillemin. The map covers from the Arctic Sea south to Denmark and east as far as the Gulf of Finland. Includes the modern day nations of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Two inset maps in the upper left detail Iceland and the Faroe Islands, respectively. Throughout, the map identifies various cities, towns, rivers and assortment of additional topographical details. This is the uncommon 1857 issue of J. H. Colton�s map of Sweden and Norway. The map covers from the Arctic Ocean south to Denmark and east as far as the Gulf of Finland. It also includes the modern day nations of Sweden and Norway, with part of adjacent Denmark and Finland. Throughout, Colton identifies various cities, towns, rivers and assortment of additional topographical details. It offers fine detail throughout with elevation rendered by hachure. A fine first edition example of M. Lapie�s 1830 map of Scandinavia. Centered on the Kingdom of Sweden, this map covers all of Scandinavia, from the Arctic Ocean to Denmark and from Norway to Finland. Two inset maps in the upper right detail Iceland and the Faroe Islands, respectively. Lapie�s map offers fine detail throughout with elevation rendered by hachure and political boundaries demarcated with outline hand color. A finely detailed first edition 1794 map of Scandinavia, by Robert Wilkinson, with Iceland as an inset. Includes Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland (then part of Sweden). Beautifully rendered mountains and fjords and gorgeous colors throughout make this an exquisite addition to any collection. Denmark prospered greatly in the last decades of the 18th century because its neutral status allowed it to trade with both sides in the many contemporary wars. In the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark originally tried to pursue a policy of neutrality to continue the lucrative trade with both France and Great Britain and joined the League of Armed Neutrality with Russia, Sweden and Prussia. Political and topographical features are noted and color coded with elevation rendered by hachure. This beautiful map is centered featuring the Baltic or with Sweden and Norway to the west and Finland to the east.. A fine example of Thomas Cowperthwait and S. A. Mitchell�s 1854 map of Denmark. The whole is engraved in Mitchell�s distinctive style with green border work and vivid pastels. Political and topographical features are noted and color coded with elevation rendered by hachure. Covers all of Denmark inclusive of the Duchy of Holstein. A list along the upper left border notes Denmark�s five Provinces: Aalborg, Viborg, Ribe, Aarhuus, and To Oldenburg. This map was prepared by S. A. This fascinating hand colored 1814 map depicts Denmark, Iceland and the Faeroe Islands. The whole is beautifully engraved in the minimalist English style pioneered in the early part of the 19th century. Thomson maps are known for their stunning color, awe inspiring size, and magnificent detail. Thomson�s work, including this map, represents some of the finest cartographic art of the 19th century. Relief is shown by hachure with towns, cities, and major topographical features identified.
