This is A. J. Johnson's beautifully hand colored first edition 1866 map of Ohio. This map shows cities, topographical features, railways, ferries and roads with color coding at the county level. Johnson introduced this large folio map in the 1864 edition of his atlas, replacing the single page Ohio map that he inherited from Colton. The expanded map was necessary to account for the boom in Ohio's population that occurred in the previous decade. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Ohio-johnson-1866>... more

It also includes parts of the neighboring states. Four of the five Great Lakes, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake erie, are also included. The map also delineates survey grids referencing the work of the U.S. Land Survey. Various towns, cities, rivers, railroads, roads, American Indian reservations and settlements, and an assortment of additional topographical details are noted. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Indiana-bradley-1887>... more

An excellent 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Ohio. Like most of Colton's state maps, this map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. The map covers the state of Oho in full as well as parts of the adjacent states. An inset map of the vicinity of Cleveland appears in the lower right quadrant. This map was issued at the height of the American westward expansion. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Ohio-colton-1856>... more

A. Mitchells 1854 map of Ohio with a profile of the Ohio and Erie Canal along the lower border. A smaller profile of the Miami Canal is also presented in the lower right quadrant. On the map proper, Ohios many canal routes are highlighted in blue while the states still fledgling railroad network appears in orange. The whole is engraved and colored in Mitchells distinctive style with green border work and vivid pastels. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Ohio-mitchell-1854>... more
