1851 Black Map of Persia and Afghanistan

This is a fine example of the Adam and Charles Black's 1851 map of Persia and Afghanistan. Centered on Yazd (Yezd) in modern day Iran, the map covers Iran, Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan, Iraq, India and Turkmenistan. It is curious to note that the northern borders of Persia, east of the Caspian Sea, are indistinct and suggestive of a general lack of knowledge regarding central Asia in the middle 19th century. Covering from the Capsian Sea to the Persian Gulf and from Armenia to India and Tartary, this is most likes a re-engraving of Kaerius c. 1628 map of the region. Cartographically this map is most notable for its misorientation of the Caspian Sea, an error common to maps of the 16th and 17th though rarely the 18th century. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/LaPerse-kaerius-1700>... more

A. Mitchell Sr.s 1853 map of Turkey in Asia. This map, made when the Ottoman Empire controlled much of the Middle East, covers what is today Turkey, Cyprus, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Ottoman provinces are color coded and numbered. An inset map in the lower left quadrant shows the environs of Constantinople (Istanbul). Surrounded by the green border common to Mitchell maps from the 1850s. Prepared by S.
