1856 Colton Map of Antarctica or South Pole

An excellent 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of the South Pole, Antarctica, or the Southern Polar Regions. Colton's map offers an excellent overview of the state Antarctic exploration and discovery around 1855. The southern continent is mapped only tenuously reflecting an overall lack of knowledge regarding the region. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/SouthernRegions-colton-1856>... more

1763 Buache Map of the Antarctic Continent or South Pole

This is an unusual and highly speculative map of the southern Polar Regions (Antarctic) drawn in 1763 by the scientific geographer M. Buache. A subtle and unusual map that yields more fascinating discoveries the longer one studies it, this chart centers on the South Pole and extends northwards as far as the Tropic of Capricorn. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Antarctica-gentlemansmagazine-1763>... more

1798 Cassini Map of Alaska and the Bering Strait

An extraordinarily fine example of Cassini's 1798 map of Alaska, the Bering Strait, and Siberia. Cassini issued this map in his 1798 atlas to illustrate the discoveries made by James Cook. Cook was the first to accurately chart the Alaskan coastline and provide a detailed mapping of the Aleutian Islands. Cook's zigzagging route is shown as he skirts the Aleutian Islands, passes through the Bering Strait into the Arctic Ocean, and then turns back to sail south along the Siberian Coast. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/Alaska-cassini-1798>... more

1799 Clement Cruttwell Map of North Pole

A fine 1799 map of the northern polar regions by the English map publisher Clement Cruttwell. Covers the polar regions from roughly 60 degrees north latitude to the North Pole. Reveals a primitive yet ephemeral understanding of Arctic geography. Evidence of the exploratory work of Tschirikow and Vitus Bering is clear in the northeast parts of Asia and Siberia. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NorthPole-cruttwell-1799>... more
