Covers the populous eastern portions of the United States from Lake Superior in the north to the Bahamas in the south and from Missouri in the west to Maine in the east. The United States at this time was witnessing a period of rapid expansion as well as rising anxiety over the issue of slavery. These tensions would grow over the next twenty years culminating in the American Civil War. This map was engraved by S. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/UnitedStates-black-1840>... more

1760 De L'Isle Speculative Map of the North America, the Arctic, and Siberia (Sea of the West)

J. N. De L'Isle and Buache drew this map to illustrate their speculations on the feasibly of a Northwest Passage. Cartographically this map is a combination of data absconded from the Russian “Academy of Sciences” and Buache’s speculations on the Northwest Passage. This map is highly significant for its revival of the 'Sea of the West' hypothesis. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/NouvellesDecouvertsArctic-delisle-1730>... more

1780 Buache Map of the West Indies, Florida, and the Antilles

Centered on Cuba, this massive map covers Central America, the Gulf of Mexico, the West Indies, and the Caribbean from Mexico and Texas to the Lesser Antilles and from Florida to the Spanish Main. Cartographically Buache derived this map from Henry Popple's remarkable 1733 map of North America. As a whole it exhibits numerous significant advances over earlier Buache / De L'Isle model of the region. <a href="http://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/AntillesMexiqueFlorida-buache-1780>... more
