From the time Alexander Graham Bell's little invention first allowed man to speak to others across the miles, it's been pretty much a given that nothing is as strong a tool for communication as the sound of the human voice . . . not newspapers, not magazines, not even the knowledge-stuffed texts on the Internet. Seeing may be believing, but seeing AND hearing motivates people to act!

With that in mind, I've been peddling audio on the Internet for more than 4 years. As a professional singer for most of my adult life, I've always understood the importance of sound and the effect it has on an audience. The challenge for me has been to open the eyes and ears of my own audience. It started while marketing our company's first product Rave Reviews. Rave Reviews are professionally interviewed and produced audio testimonials that can be featured on web sites for added credibility. Wouldn't every business owner want to have "real-life" testimonials on their Web sites rather than those typically boring text ones that everyone else has? One would certainly think so.

But frequently people have trouble seeing the potential for their businesses and the question in the back of everyone's mind was "do testimonials actually "sell" anything?" What proof is there? Does hearing a customer endorsement really differ that much from reading one? Can testimonials actually increase ROI? Lots of questions . . . but in this case, there's a better way to gauge the effectiveness of a new media form . . . think of yourself as the customer, and how a multi-media pitch might affect YOU.

I'm of the opinion that no matter what walk of business life you're coming from . . . the successful corporate CEO, the dedicated marketing specialist, or the struggling entrepreneur . . . we're all emotional creatures and because we're so intensely influenced by those emotions, external stimuli via our five senses play a very important role in how we perceive others and with whom we choose to do business. It seems logical that the more senses used in gauging something, the truer the evaluation. A simple inflection of the voice from an audio book can take the listener through emotional twists and turns that speak volumes over a comparative text-only version.

Obviously, reading offers one advantage over audio in that the reader can have a "pure" experience through his or her own imagination and perception, rather than listening to a voice that through its inflections and tone conjures up an image for them. But, as a business owner, marketer, or sales manager, do you really want your Internet customers to judge your product or service strictly by what they read, or think they read? Wouldn't you really like the opportunity to "talk" to them directly to personally point out the benefits of your product, and let them hear the pride of workmanship in your voice?

Through the earliest days of worldwide newspaper communications, through the era of radio that brought a faceless voice through a simple speaker, and on to the invention of television that literally changed the world . . . each medium as its turn came, gobbled up large percentages of the market. We can compare these three powerful mediums; newspaper, radio and TV, to the transitional phases of the Internet, which went quickly from obscurity to a household "must have". Now with the onslaught of audio and video to enhance it, we're well on our way to a new age of sight AND sound in our everyday online experience.

Delphi's potent and pocket-friendly SA10000 XM SKYFi satellite radio receiver flits easily between home and car and puts XM Radio's wealth of music, sports, and news offerings at your fingertips, whether you're accessing the service's 100-plus channels via the receiver's stylish faceplate or through the supplied remote control. We found the receiver's display and controls well laid out and easy to navigate. More importantly, XM's radio service is every bit as enjoyable as its hardware is simple.

Use of the receiver requires a paid monthly subscription to XM Satellite Radio ($9.95 per month, no contract required). You'll also need either a car or a home docking apparatus such as the Delphi SA10002 XM SKYFi vehicle kit or the Delphi SA10034 XM Portable CD audio boombox (whose use is by no means limited to the home). The receiver pulls in the signal, while a docking station provides DC power and traditional features like speakers, headphone jacks, and antennas, depending on the accessory. For this review we used the XM portable boombox. It bears repeating: the SA10000 receiver will produce no sound without an ancillary listening device.

The XM service offers good music with minimal repetition whichever direction you turn, all conveniently arranged by category or by channel. Using the remote's display button, you can even view the artist or the name of the song currently playing as you scroll past stations. XM's channels break down into 68 music channels (all of them commercial free), 33 channels of news (ABC, CNN, Fox, and a host of other mainstream networks), sports (led by 2 ESPN and 2 NASCAR channels), talk, and entertainment (Discover, E!, others), as well as instant traffic and weather updates for 21 major U.S. metropolitan areas.

Within the major music categories--rock, "hits" (pop), country, jazz/blues, and urban--subgenres abound, offering many exciting places to revisit classics and discover new favorites. Notably anomalies are channels devoted to new age (Audio Visions), progressive-rock/jazz fusion (XM Music Lab), rock bands lacking record contracts (Unsigned), and great moments and music from films (Cinemagic). There's even a channel for Starbucks' excellent HEAR Music, centered on jazz musicians and singer-songwriters and the musicians who inspired them.

Underserved are classical music (3 channels cover orchestral music, vocal music, and single movements of larger works), children's music (teens may enjoy Disney radio, but XM Kids is just plain soggy), world music (7 channels, 4 of which are Latin and 1 of which is devoted to music from Jamaica), and--most surprisingly--electronica. XM's dance and electronic music leans heavily on beats, going mainstream with hip acts like Royksopp, Moby, and Zero 7.

The receiver offers 20 station presets (2 banks of 10) and 10 memory settings, which recall artist, song, and station after the fact so you can make notes or hunt out CDs later.

To evaluate XM's sound quality we fed the headphone output from the SA10034 boombox to an integrated amplifier and speaker setup. Quality proved remarkably consistent channel to channel. Relative to our CDs and MP3 music files, the quality of the XM service sounds closest to 128 kbps MP3--wholly listenable and usually downright enjoyable, if not as smooth, full-bodied, and detailed as linear (uncompressed) CD sound.

Bass is decent--a little hyped on rock material, like FM radio--and the treble frequencies sound natural and free from most of the artifacts often heard in lossy digital compression. XM's classical programming sounds even better than its rock programming, with fewer artifacts and a wider stereo soundstage. Better than FM? For its silky background quiet and slightly wider dynamic range, we'd have to say yes. --Michael Mikesell

AudioVox Play Satellite Radio

I selected this unit because of the excellent reviews from another store's web site and that it had an FM transmitter which is a good option if your car radio does not have am audio AUX jack. Note the brand name of the unit I bought was SiriusXM, but the model number matches this Amazon listing.

The installation guide insists that the magnetic antenna as to be installed outside. The guide talks the reader through a process of temporarily removing weather stripping on the vehicle door and putting the antenna wire under the weather stripping. I decided that destroying by two year old pickup truck was not for me, so before going to far, I verified that I could put the antenna on the dash by the windshield and get reception. I then drove for a couple miles on a cloudy day and had no interruptions in service.

Satisfied, I then used the included vent clip to mount the unit to a vent. Again, I have no interest in destroying my new truck, so the vent option versus screwing into dash was the only acceptable approach.

The only challenging part was to get the FM transmitter to work with my truck's radio. Per the instructions I tune the truck radio and XM radio to an unused frequency with no joy. I was convinced that the XM radio was defective, and came close considering a plan B which would have been to buy a separate amplifier and speakers. However I decided to keep trying, and managed to find three FM frequencies that would pickup the XM transmission. My only concern is that if use the XM on an extended road trip, I do not want to be fumbling every 100 miles or so to find unused frequencies. I will add an AUX jack if faced with that.

My goal is to be able to take my XM radio with me when I fly to other cities and rent a car. To do that I plan to mount the XM radio to a friction pad such as that used for a GPS. The XM radio came with a dash mount fitting with a ball socket that attaches to the XM radio. Unfortunately the ball joint is a different size then that used for my GPS and the base of the dash mount fitting is too big for my GPS friction pad. What I plan to do is cut a plastic disk that fits my GPS friction pad and then screw it to the XM dash mount fitting using the existing holes.

Connecting it to my wireless network was a breeze. Well, using a single knob to enter my very long network key into the radio was maybe not quite a breeze, but you only do it once. Other than that it was a breeze.

The radio came with a bunch of chinese radio stations set. That was amusing for about 30 seconds. Cleaning them out and setting up something more to my tastes went quickly. There are way more choices out there than most people will have the time to explore. Fortunately it's easy to quickly find something that you'll like. And with access to Pandora (which requires extra steps (including setting up a free account with Grace Reciva (see below))) you can create stations that are tailored to your tastes.

Creating my free account on Grace Reciva to enable "premium" features was a challenge. The website didn't seem to be working too well when I first tried. Lots of "Oops, something seems to have gone wrong and we are working on it" type of messages. I tried later and it went a lot smoother. Linking my Pandora account to the radio was easy (once Reciva started working). Took less than an hour to get everything set up, with most of that time being waiting for Reciva to get their act together.

The sound of the radio is what you would expect from a radio. It won't thump your chest and shake your house. However if you want that sort of performance you can hook it up to your stereo system or a set of powered speakers with volume limited only by the power of what you hooked up. I hooked up a powered speaker system with a subwoofer that I had laying around from a past computer system. Works great.

Radio has pretty good range, but performance will depend on the quality of your wireless router.

This was my first Internet radio, so I didn't know exactly what to expect, but the user reviews were good, so I bought one.

This is sort of a "triple-threat" radio. To use it, you must have a wireless router. With just the router on, you can 1) listen to Internet radio; or 2) listen to Pandora. With your PC on as well, you can 3) play music and other audio material via Windows Media Player.

As others have observed, the initial set-up is kind of a pain, but it's just a one-time thing [Grace: a little mini-keyboard instead of the wheel would be a huge plus]. Internet Radio: It's useful to know in advance the call letters of the stations you want to listen to. Up to 10 pre-sets are possible. Pandora: You must be a member [it's easy and free], and it's a lot easier to define "stations" using a PC than via the Grace radio. [Once the stations are defined, just scroll through the list on the radio and select the one you want to listen to].

Windows Media Player: "Share" your files to the Grace radio. On the PC, when you set up sharing, a "Grace" icon will appear. The playlists that you've defined in WMP will show up on the Grace radio--like Pandora, just pick from the list of available playlists.

The radio sounds good; navigation takes a little practice, but it all makes sense. I'm glad I bought mine.

I bought this unit July 11, 2011 under the CRAIG name (CD 6948) at a Zellers store in Ontario, no remote offered and I'm completely satisfied with it. I'm playing it non-stop with no problems whatsoever. Four speakers including a separate tweeter on both sides, beautiful crisp clear well modulated sound, the analog AM and FM tuners are sensitive and useful, I'm getting 100+ songs on a 1GB USB memory stick and also a standard SD photo card. I just plugged in an 8GB USB (with 411 songs on it) to see if it would read it and zero problems. CD/MP3 player also works flawlessly. For me, it's perfect for nearly unlimited background music anywhere I plug it in. I don't know why these boxes are nearly impossible to find in the U.S., I guess all 300 million people here own an I-POD and need units with only I-Pod cradles. Having total and easy edit control of which songs you want on a particular memory card (buy a six pack of 2GB's at Amazon) is amazing. The velvety memory card music comes out of a background of complete silence--- no moving parts.

Livio Bluetooth Internet Radio Car

I have to admit I was really skeptical about this thing at first. My wife and I bought one of those Belkin FM transmitters a few years back for road trips and it was a POS. That was such a bad experience that the only reason I even tried this one was because I got it for free through a trial program. That being said. I tried it yesterday morning and was able to set it up out of the box and have it playing music through my car stereo in under five minutes without even opening the manual. I'm a pretty tech savy user, but that's still pretty awesome. I used it again on the drive home and again on the drive in this morning with great results. Sound quality is pretty good too given that it's streaming through my 3g phone and then through the radio.

The flexible cable on the the cigarette light plug makes this thing very easy to adjust and move around on your dash to the correct location for you. The buttons are all lit up and the controls are the exact same as any other radio. The fact that they put a USB charger on it for your phone is just icing on the cake, but if you're doing any long distance traveling and will be streaming through BT that's a MUST so great they included it.

Could it be? Are the rumors true? If this screenshot, apparently culled from Radio Shack's inventory system, is any indication, Sprint will indeed be among the carriers offering the iPhone 5. That lines up just right with previous reports from Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, slating the phone to hit the Now Network in mid-October. There's no indication of actual dates at this point, but if Sprint's getting Apple's next-gen iPhone, we're guessing we'll hear more about it on Tuesday.

The First Radio Box: Now It Is Green Design

I have a 1990 Humongous, the TV in my family room, as deep as wide, and I want the miller was made of cardboard, such as SUCK UK cardboard radio news, so I can just use a knife to break parts break between them and drag them to the recycling center. Instead I will have to hire two sumo wrestlers to remove the big stuff and take it to a "recycling center" where very little, it will be recycled.

Maybe Irish designer Christopher McNicholl and sucking the UK will launch a trend Cardboard Radio, the first FM radio and totally recyclable MP3 speaker system that can be recycled or broken down and recycled when this life is over.

Internal wiring is all set in a simple structure map. There are not many radio board, this is not a BOSE ®, but has its own charm, as well as work.

When we really stop the waste? Let's challenge to Sony and Philips and other high-tech designers and builders to come up with simpler, more modular, lighter products and equipment designed for at least some parts of recycled and recyclable.

I’m probably dating myself, but I actually owned one of the first cell phones, admit it, some of you remember… It came attached to a darn suitcase, and seemed to weigh about 5 pounds. I was pretty proud of it, and come to think of it, the reception was pretty good too! But look how far we’ve come…
As cell phones have become smaller and owning one is now almost compulsory, those unsightly antennas of steel topped by all the necessary transmitters and gizmos that we call cell towers have invaded practically every landscape known to man. So let us welcome Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio. Imagine if you will, much smaller antennas, some tiny enough to hold in your hand. A device like that could be placed anywhere, on lamp or utility poles on buildings, heck, anywhere with electrical and network connections. Seriously, a cell tower in a box!
If they can iron out a few details, it could upend the wireless industry and offer amazing service, fantastic voice and data transmissions with no dead spots, fewer dropped calls, and let’s face it, the end of those unsightly towers. Because the antennas will be so much smaller and can be put in so many more locations, the result is increased signal strength for us all, and who would object to something the size of a Rubiks cube “erected” somewhere near their home?
Alcatel-Lucent also thinks that their new lightRadio can cut both the financial and energy costs of operating a network by 50% or more, because it diminishes upkeep and maintenance costs, energy consumption and because more information can be transmitted at the same time. Gee, I wonder if those claims came to fruition we would actually have our phone bills cut in half. Wait a minute, I’m holding my breath.

LePage urges action on energy in radio address

Maine — Energy, and fuel prices in particular, were on Gov. Paul LePage’s mind as he gave his weekly radio address.

LePage noted in his Saturday address that gas prices during the past week reached $5 per gallon in Washington, D.C., and $4 in many parts of Maine.

“Chaos in the Middle East, the value of the U.S. dollar, and price speculation has steadily led to higher oil prices,” LePage said in his text. “Unfortunately, Maine is dependent on a world oil market to supply transportation fuel and heating oils. In the short term conservation will help minimize costs, but it is only a small portion of the solution.”

LePage said he urges President Barack Obama to look for immediate alternatives, including oil and gas exploration and production in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, portions of the Rocky Mountains, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Atlantic and Pacific. LePage said he’s also directed Ken Fletcher, director of Maine’s Office of Energy Independence, to find opportunities to lower the cost of energy to Maine consumers.

LePage’s address included some positive news: the U.S. Energy Information Administration has released price data that indicate Maine’s average retail price of electricity has decreased. In 2009, Maine had the 10th highest electricity prices in the country, but now Maine is in the No. 12 spot.

“We are moving in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go to where we need to be,” said LePage.

In the Democratic response, Rep. Emily Cain of Orono focuses on the wider legislative agendas the administration and her minority caucus are advancing for the final weeks of the 2011 session.

Cain, the Democrats’ House leader, countered LePage’s claims that her party has refused to come forth with alternatives to his proposals.

“Since the start of the legislative session, Democrats on every policy committee have provided strong proposals to counter the extreme agenda of the governor and Republicans in the Legislature. Time and again our common sense ideas on regulatory reform, the budget, toxic chemicals, and public safety have won out over radical proposals,” Cain said.

Radio 'Story': When Guest Callers Are Really Just Acting

As an actor living in New York City, even when I'm currently employed as a performer, I have to be looking ahead for the next project. Life is a job search in perpetuity.

This past January I discovered an ongoing audition held by Premiere Radio Networks, a subsidiary of media titan Clear Channel Communications, that syndicates several notable radio programs. They were seeking actors to audition for roles on radio talk shows. The roles, however, were not characters in bits or sketches but rather that of random callers calling in to discuss whatever the topic of the moment was and to offer pertinent stories and opinions. And unlike most performances, the audience in this case wouldn't know they were witnessing a performance.

The job immediately struck me as morally dubious. But curious, I submitted my credentials online and a few weeks later had an audition consisting of a mock radio phone-in. I played a caller asking for advice on how to handle a delicate situation amongst my friends that had arisen during a bachelor party. Later that week I received an email saying that I passed the audition and that Premiere On Call, the name of Premiere Radio's service that supplies actors to client radio stations, would like to add me to their roster of actors. The pay was $40/hour with a minimum of one hour guaranteed. I respectfully declined to take the job.

At no point was I truly surprised that such a service exists. Deception in American media has a long and varied history. I was surprised, however, that such a clear orchestration of deception was so visible yet had seemingly gone unnoticed. Premiere's own website, until recently, openly described the service.

Hoping to explore this further I got in touch with Liel Leibovitz, a journalist and assistant professor at NYU Steinhardt's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication. He was surprised to hear of the practice and wanted to write about it in his column for Tablet, an online Jewish magazine. On February 11th, Tablet ran his article.

While it's gratifying that the conversation has begun, a lot of it thus far has missed the point. The thrust of the issue was at first reduced to a partisan political shouting match. Some liberal bloggers seized on the fact that Premiere syndicates the radio shows of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. While this is notable because they're the top three rated radio talk show hosts, their relation to Premiere in no way implicates them as clients of Premiere On Call any more than any other radio show syndicated by any other broadcaster. Premiere On Call is not an in house service but is available to anyone, regardless of their political bent.

And the right wing counter provided more misdirection and contradiction highlighted by Rush Limbaugh's response. Limbaugh called out Tablet as a "radical, left-wing operation" only minutes after speaking out against the practice himself. Apparently, even if you agree with your ideological opponent these days you must marginalize his views and insult him before saying so.

Still others commenting see this as a non-story, declaring that they've always assumed this practice exists and that fake callers are easy to identify. This reasoning is spurious at best. The morality of willfully trying to get an audience to believe something that's not true isn't judged on how successful or not the scam is, it's judged by the intent. And the intent is to deceive. The danger of Premiere On Call's operation isn't in its potential use in satire and it's not in the calls that are, to some ears, clearly staged. It's in the ones that no one realizes are fake.

Gawker reported on a similar service offered by the radio programming company, United Stations Radio Networks, which was co-founded by Dick Clark. An actor only identified by the first name Bert was paid to call into a radio show to portray himself as a pilot and aviation expert in order to comment on a recent plane crash. A deceptive prank is one thing, willfully misinforming the public another. And though Premiere has said that they only hire out actors as fake callers for talk radio, not for news shows, how reassuring is that when the two at least seem to constantly overlap?

Radio callers more than bloggers and any participant in visual media thrive on anonymity. Their comments fall anywhere in the spectrum from thoughtful argument to bathroom wall graffiti. But the sum of it creates a reality that, to the vast listening audience, seems to represent more than the voice of a handful of individual callers. Listeners reflexively extrapolate a single voice into the imagined reality of a global chorus. I, for one, don't see the wisdom in accepting a reality without knowing what percentage of it is fabricated in order to fit a certain agenda, whether that agenda is political or merely to entertain.

In terms of the performer's role, acting is an art form most valuable for illuminating truths, not purposefully obscuring them. Acting when no one knows you're acting is generally called lying, regardless of compensation. And since the law doesn't draw this moral line, the actor must do so for himself.
