After Covid hibernation, one of the exhibitions planned for the artist’s work is finally here. “Antonio Agudo and Drawing” opens today in the Laraña Space at the Facultad de Bellas Artes de Sevilla (Seville’s School of Fine Arts) and runs until March 23rd.

Tras la hibernación por la pandemia de Covid, podemos anunciar finalmente una de las exposiciones que había planeadas para la obra del artista. “Antonio Agudo y el Dibujo” se inaugura hoy en el Espacio Laraña de la Facultad de Bellas Artes de Sevilla y permanece abierta hasta el 23 de marzo.

It’s been a while since the last post although not for lack of news. We’ve updated the list of individual exhibitions the artist has done in the last 5 years, such as Discovering America for the Alcala de Guadaira Museum of Contemporary Arts in 2017 and again for the Haurie Gallery in Seville earlier this year, as well as others in Seville and Huelva.

Another one of the activities that have increased since the painter’s retirement from academic teaching, have been his imparting of master classes for different foundations, museums and organisations. Presently, Agudo is giving two masterclasses this October: on life drawing on the 9th and 10th and watercolour on the 21st and 22nd. Both take place at the Cajasol Foundation in Cádiz and are part of the Cadiz’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts education and cultural programme. Agudo was made a member of the Academy in 2015.

Ha pasado tiempo desde que escribiéramos aquí alguna noticia, y no por falta de ellas. En la sección de cronología, hemos añadido nuevas exposiciones individuales del artista en los últimos 5 años, tales como Descubriendo América en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alcalá de Guadaíra en 2017 y también en la Galería Haurie a principios de este año, así como otras en Sevilla y Huelva.

Otra de las actividades que han incrementado desde la jubilación del pintor de la enseñanza académica, ha sido la impartición de clases magistrales para diferentes fundaciones, museos y organizaciones. Este octubre, Agudo dará dos clases magistrales: una de dibujo al natural los días 9 y 10, y otra de acuarela el 21 y 22 de este mes. Ambas tienen lugar en la sede de la Fundación Cajasol en Cádiz y  forman parte del programa educativo y cultural de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Cádiz, de la que Antonio Agudo fue nombrado académico en 2015.

As part of the current collection Agudo is working on titled America. Between Iguazu and The Copper Canyon, which will be exhibited next year, the five watercolours that form the polyptych titled Storm have been made into prints in a limited run of 50 of each. They are all also signed by the artist.

The prints have been made by Seville’s poster gallery L’Image, who are selling them from their gallery and online.

Parte de la presente colección en la que Agudo está trabajando, titulada América. Entre el Iguazú y La Barranca del Cobre, la cual será expuesta el próximo año, las cinco acuarelas que forman el políptico Tormenta han sido reproducidas en una edición limitada de 50 por cada original. Todas han sido firmadas por el artista.

Las reproducciones han sido realizadas por la galería  L’Image en Sevilla, que las tiene en venta in situ y por su sitio de internet.

Antonio Agudo has been selected to become part of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Cadiz. The investiture will take place on the 22nd of June. A fellow painter, the president of the Prado Museum’s Royal Board and an art historian have also been selected as new members.

Agudo has had a long artistic and personal relationship with the city of Cadiz. During his childhood, his family moved to Cadiz from Seville for two years while his father was the director of the graphics department for the newspaper Diario de Cadiz. Since then, Agudo has featured the city and coastal villages and landscapes in different collections during his career.

His last exhibition in Cadiz was last summer in the historic Castle of Santa Catalina. Below are some photos of the painter at the exhibition.

Antonio Agudo ha sido elegido para formar parte de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Cádiz. La investidura tendrá lugar el 22 de junio. Otra pintora, el presidente del Real Patronato del Museo del Prado, y un historiador del Arte han sido seleccionados junto con Agudo como nuevos académicos.

El pintor tiene una larga relación con la ciudad de Cádiz, personal y profesional. Durante su infancia, vivió con su familia en la ciudad durante dos años, mientras su padre llevó el departamento de gráfica del Diario de Cádiz. Desde entonces, Agudo ha representado la ciudad, y paisajes costeros de la provincia en diferentes colecciones a lo largo de su carrera.

La última exposición del pintor en Cádiz fue el pasado verano en el histórico Palacio de Santa Catalina. Abajo hay algunas fotos de dicha exposición.

On the occasion of the painter’s next exhibition, we’ve updated the three galleries on the page with recent works. The exhibition, entitled “Between Mexico, Cadiz and other waters”, will open on the 23^rd May this year at the Castle of Santa Catalina in the city of Cadiz. The Castle, which faces La Caleta Beach, was ordered to be built by King Felipe II in 1598, after the English assault on the city. It has been recently restored and reopened to the public in January of this year. It’s exclusively for cultural use, housing exhibitions and summer concerts. For our English speaking visitors and Bond fans, here’s a link with more info, photos and location of the castle on the James Bond website, since part of Die Another Day was filmed in Cádiz, the castle featuring in the background in a scene. After its inauguration and time in Cadiz, the exhibition will continue to Jerez and finally Algeciras, lasting until October 2014. Con motivo de la próxima exposición del pintor, hemos actualizado las tres galerías de la página con obras recientes. La exposición, que lleva como título “Entre México, Cádiz y Otras Aguas”, se inaugurará el 23 de Mayo de este año en el Castillo de Santa Catalina en la ciudad de Cádiz. El castillo, frente a la Playa de La Caleta fue mandado a construir por el rey Felipe II en 1598, tras el asalto inglés a la ciudad. Ha sido recientemente restaurado y abierto de nuevo a público en enero de este año. De uso cultural, alberga exposiciones y conciertos de verano. Under the heat of a Seville summer in the middle of August, Agudo works tirelessly on new works and ideas. From his previous collection of watercolours on the Mexican Copper Canyon he extracts more and more minimal and abstract expressions of the otherworldliness that attracted him from the location years ago.

On the human figure, he’s working on a new series of charcoal drawings of his wife Pilar Sanchiz, who’s been a constant in his figurative paintings since they met more than 40 years ago.

Bajo el calor del verano de Sevilla, a mediados de agosto, Agudo trabaja sin cansancio en nuevos trabajos e ideas. De su colección previa de acuarelas de la Barranca del Cobre Mexicana, extrae expresiones aún más mínimas y abstractas de esos paisajes de otro mundo que le atrayeron hace ya varios años.

De la figura humana, trabaja en una nueva serie de dibujos al carbón sobre su mujer, Pilar Sanchiz, la que ha sido una constante en sus obras figurativas desde que se conocieron hace ya más de 40 años.
