Britishness Animation

So the second part of the 'Britishness' brief was to create an animation in Flash. I was torn when I heard about this as I've not properly used Flash in a serious way before, so it was a good chance to learn and experiment with it. But because I hadn't used it properly I was afraid it would come out crap. I was originally going to just animate my poster design, but after a little while playing around I thought its just looked like a made a Powerpoint presentation so didn't continue with that idea. The idea I moved on to was British people seem to always complain about the weather, whether it's sunny or rainy etc. I made a 'stop-motion' style animation, where one grumpy old man is in the foreground and a year flies by behind him and all he does is complain about the weather. If you watch closely there are several events that happen behind him too at the right time of year. I was fairly pleased with how it turned out, it could be muuuuuuch better but for a first-ish try not too bad.

Britishness Poster

So I was given a brief about 'Britishness' and what it meant to me. The first part of this was to create a poster, which you may of seen a sneak peek of in a previous post. The design, above, is based around the idea that British people often speak under their breath and say thing's in conversation they don't actually mean, usually so they don't feel uncomfortable.

The idea is you see one of the pieces of text and then see the other, showing the two meanings. The poster went through many stages to get to this point, here are just a couple of them:

So I started another blog where I'm introducing the world to pretty, funny, thought provoking or otherwise generally nice art, design, pictures, video and other bits and bobs from everywhere. It's acts as a sort of inspiration space for myself, as well as letting other people see things they may not have seen before. Project 'Shop'...

So I visited the 'Shop' that ran from the 30th of April until the 3rd of May, and I must say it was brilliant. I found it such a fun and inventive exhibition, the whole theatrical aspect was excellent and the interactivity with the items was fun, and the fact everything is cardboard is amazing. The idea of taking your average shopping trip and flipping it on its head I think is superb and in this case was pulled of brilliantly. It didn't just attract people from the AUCB either, when I went an elderly man was outside, stood in wonderment and disbelief, and he told me "I've lived in Bournemouth all my life and have never seen anything like it, it's absolutely incredible, I love it!!". Whilst there I managed to pick up some Radiation Juice (to help me glow with energy), some Enlightenment Matches (for complete Enlightenment), Cellu-Lite (to keep me looking beautiful and tastes great on toast) and some Legitchew (great for washing the bulls**t from your mouth), although I really could of done with some Personal Space but they were all sold out!

Oh dear Mister Brown...

So after hearing what lovely Mr Prime Minister Gordon Brown said to that lady, and the fact it links so well to my current Uni work, I felt compelled to create a poster about it. So here it is, kind of like an anti-election poster. Although I made this I'm not against Labour, I don't really know much about politics and I'm not inclined to any party. I only made it because I love the fact the Prime Minister was caught being a meanie! The design is based off the poster, below, I created for Uni on Britishness and focuses on talking under your breath and not really meaning what you say. I have become fascinated by this crazy volcano that's been spewing it's guts since 21st of March. It's closed hundreds of airports and brought airline companies to their knees! Maybe it's a reminder to take care of the planet, like the earth is saying "don't mess with me, I don't f**k around!", yet it is such a beautiful thing. Mother nature in all it's frightening glory! Don't get me wrong it's annoying as hell, I know several people that are stranded and are going to miss some pretty important occasions due to the ash. But there's no-one to blame or get mad at and nothing nobody can do, except sit back, let it happen and remember don't forget Mother Nature will mess you up!

It's been a while, so here's some Art Nouveau

So it's been a pretty busy month or so, and I haven't had time (or been bothered, you decide??) to update this bad boy, sorry!! So I finished a looooong group project based around the idea of creating an exhibiton to be displayed at the London Design Museum around the art movement 'Art Nouveau'. This involved authoring and designing a book, creating a poster and promotional items. My areas of work within the team were writing the chapter on furniture, creating the design for the book jacket, as well as, mentioned in a previous post (found here), creating a stained glass cover. I found the project throughly enjoyable and interesting as I had never really worked in group in such a way before. My team was a great team to work with and feel we created some really good pieces of work. Check out some image below:

Wicked Cool Animation...

Yesterday was a Flash workshop and I made a TOTALLY WICKED COOL animation starring Robert Kilroy-Silk and his freakishly large hand! Just click here or the matey above to see it. I dont know about you but I'm sure this is on the verge of being a Pixar blockbuster.

But seriously though I've had a lil' mess around with Flash before so already knew about the basics like tweening and that after doing a couple of online tutorials. Including one where I created a simple animation of a bouncing ball, which you can see here or by clicking on the ball below.

...and made some pretty windows!?! Well technically they are part of a book cover for the Art Nouveau project I am currently doing. A more detailed post will follow soon when the project is over, but the basic idea is the class was split into design teams focused on different art movements, I am part of the Art Nouveau team. The designs for this glass are inspired heavily by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The designs were created in Illustrator, printed actual size to act as a stencil for the glass and then also to help reassemble the jigsaw of glass pieces. Although the process was frustrating and tedious at times I really enjoyed learning the new skill and creating something with my hands. More pictures to follow.

Time Waits For No Man...

I think Twitter is an interesting thing, not only is it a good way to keep in touch with friends, but I also think it is a valuable resource as a graphic design student. Whether it be free fonts or textures from @freeloadthis, interesting articles about design from @smashingmag or just the everyday thoughts of other designers, Twitter is simple and quick way of seeing useful resources. Anyway I digress, after following awesome designer Kerry Roper on Twitter for a while, I noticed he posted a competition to win one of his prints 'Time Waits For No Man', which I happen to like. So I took the 2 seconds to do what it said to enter the competition and thought nothing of it, however the following day I surprised and well pleased to find out I had won!! Two weeks later I had an excellent limited edition print hanging from my bedroom wall, so I just wanted to say THANKS MR ROPER!!

This is the final outcome for 3rd and final brief in Typographic Studies. The brief was to take one of three articles (The Crystal Goblet by Beatrice Warde, Gothic Horror by Steven Heller or Read Me! by Lucienne Roberts), and produce a 4 page spread representative of that article. I originally chose Gothic Horror but after a short amount of experimentation found it boring and unenjoyable, so switched to Read Me! which I found a much more interesting article. After much experimentation above is my final design. The main idea is the blue punctuation represents the the text as a whole, which should flow, like water. Overall I was pleased with how it turned out and feel I was fairly successful in what I was trying to achieve.

I like this video for two reasons, one it's a funny parody of the famous Pixar intro, and two it's a clever use of type. I like the fact different letters represent different jobs and people, for example P for police or the crying mother I.

Typographic Book Cover

On Tuesday 10th of November I was given the first of three briefs in Typographic Studies. The brief was to take a book we had read (or at least had an interest in) and to re-design the cover using only typography. I haven't really read much for a while and the only books I could remember were Dan Brown's Deception Point and Ben Mezrich's Bringing Down The House. I chose Bringing Down The House as it was one of the first books I read for enjoyment. Also I am interested in card-counting, gambling and casinos. After experimenting including burning letters into cards and scribbling code words into a 'cheat sheet'. I landed on recreating a blackjack table using typography, using a similar font to the font used to write rules on blackjack tables and a similar colour-scheme. I also used the shape of two playing cards placed one on top of the other and added a 'optical illusion' style type onto them.

Stumbling through the internet recently I found the colour of art, and it's grayish brown!! Well, the colour of art, according to designer Joshua Nimoy and the average colour from 26,000 images from the MoMA art collection.

PolarClock : pixelbreaker

I have a slight obsession with time, well not technically time itself but what you use to tell the time. I have a large collection of watches and several different clocks ticking away in my room, and I like them all because they are so different but do the same thing. For example my Spiderman alarm clock deafens me in the morning with the sounds of "Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a spider can!!", but it couldn't be more different from the 'Time Pyramid' that sits on my desk and is constantly changing shape as it's alternating sections tell me the time in a whole different way.

But one of the clocks I like the most I use as my screen-saver, the PolarClock by pixelbreaker. It works in a similar way to a normal clock, it rotates clockwise in a circle with different sections marking the hour, minute and seconds as well as the date. But the reason I like it the most is because it's almost a beautiful piece of design in itself. It's so simple, clean and concise, it's similar enough to a regular clock but different enough to be eye catching. I think it wouldn't look out of place as a logo or other piece of design or even hung as a canvas on my wall, which I don't think is bad for something that in the end just tells me how late I am for Uni!

Logotype

On Friday 23rd of October I was given was given my second of two briefs in Introductory Studies. This time we were given the task of designing a logotype for a profession and country that we pulled randomly out of a box. Our logo was to represent the activities of the profession and the identity of the country we were given. After picking the profession and country out of the boxes I had landed with Zimbabwean Inventor. My first thoughts were an interesting combination but also a hard one. I had several ideas about how I was going to represent the two, including going off on a slight tangent with a African word that didn't make much sense, until i decided on use the colours of the Zimbabwean flag, the Zimbabwean bird from the flag and light bulbs to represent the ideas of inventors. After experimenting with using these elements in different ways, such as the light bulb above the birds head or the light bulb inside the bird, I decided my favorite design was shaping the filament in the bulb into the Zimbabwean bird.

I also added the colours of the flag to the screw part of the bulb, as it was originally grey and seemed like a perfect way to back-up the idea of Zimbabwe.

Andy Awesome

I stumbled across some work by artist Andy Awesome I really liked. Titled "Series Nº1", Andy Awesome has taken notable figures from pop culture and given them his own twist. He has taken characters from everywhere, TV, film, video games, comic books and music. They remind me of a modern version of the Andy Warhol prints of Marilyn Monroe.

I like the above collection as in four circles Andy Awesome encapsulates Japan as a nation, flag, sushi, Mount Fuji and Japanese Face. But what I like most about his work is the fact that it brings back memories, most likely you've found yourself at one point or another blowing into your Super Mario Bros Nintendo cartridges trying to get it to play.

Political Postcard

On the 8th of October I was given my first brief for Level 4 Introductory Studies, the title was Political Postcard. The brief was extracted from Visual Literacy by Wilde and Wilde. The idea behind the brief was that, as graphic designer, we should be aware and observe the environment in which we live. Also we should understand that the opinions we have of our environment are not the same as other peoples, and I was to communicate how I felt on an issue, in this case a political one. We were to choose a significant political issue, past or present, research into the issue, and then using the facts, our ideas and opinions create a postcard communicating them.

My chosen issue was CCTV and how, for the number there are, they are pretty useless stopping crime. After playing around with several ideas I settled with the idea of idioms describing how I felt about CCTV, such as 'As useful as a chocolate teapot' or 'As useful as a handbrake on a canoe'. My first attempt was to visually represent the idioms, for example I created a 'chocolate teapot' in Photoshop but at my tutorial it was commented that it was not obvious enough and looked too much like a 'brown teapot'. So I changed my approach to a more typographic one and listed the idioms. After experimenting with size and layout this is my final design.

I like my design and feel it was successful, however it does lack colour that I would most definitely add if I was to revisit this project.
