The National Anthem of India :
The Indian National anthem, originally composed in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, was adopted in its Hindi version by the Constituent Assembly as the National Anthem of India on 24 January 1950. It was first sung on 27 December 1911 at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. The complete song consists of five stanzas. Playing time of full version of the National Anthem is approximately 52 seconds. The lyrics were rendered into English by Rabindranath Tagore himself.

Sare Jahan Se Aacha :

The poem Saare Jahan Se Achcha was composed by the poet Sir Allama Muhammad Iqbal in 1904-1905 while India was under British administration. The poem is sung by Indians on occasions of national importance and in schools as part of morning prayer. After the Indian National Song Jana-Gana-Mana and the Indian National Song Vande Mataram, Sare Jahan Se Achcha enjoys the reputation as the most popular patriotic song in India. The poem epitomises love for the nation and patriotism.

26th January 1950 is one of the most important days in Indian history as it was on this day the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly sovereign state. In this day India became a totally republican unit. The country finally realized the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who, fought for and sacrificed their lives for the Independence of their country. So, the 26th of January was decreed a national holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India, ever since.

Today, the Republic Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm all over the country and especially in the capital, New Delhi where the celebrations start with the Presidential to the nation. The beginning of the occasion is always a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the martyrs who died for the country in the freedom movement and the succeeding wars for the defense of sovereignty of their country. Then, the President comes forward to award the medals of bravery to the people from the armed forces for their exceptional courage in the field and also the civilians, who have distinguished themselves by their different acts of valour in different situations.

To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in the capital, from the Rajghat, along the Vijaypath. The different regiments of the army, the Navy and the Air force march past in all their finery and official decorations even the horses of the cavalry are attractively caparisoned to suit the occasion. The crème of N.C.C cadets, selected from all over the country consider it an honour to participate in this event, as do the school children from various schools in the capital. They spend many days preparing for the event and no expense is spared to see that every detail is taken care of, from their practice for the drills, the essential props and their uniforms.

The parade is followed by a pageant of spectacular displays from the different states of the country. These moving exhibits depict scenes of activities of people in those states and the music and songs of that particular state accompany each display. Each display brings out the diversity and richness of the culture of India and the whole show lends a festive air to the occasion. The parade and the ensuing pageantry is telecast by the National Television and is watched by millions of viewers in every corner of the country.

The patriotic fervor of the people on this day brings the whole country together even in her essential diversity. Every part of the country is represented in occasion, which makes the Republic Day the most popular of all the national holidays of India.

Til Ladoo (Sankranti Special)

Ingredients

1 cup Til

2 cups Jaggery

1/2 cup Peanuts

4 tsp Ghee

1/2 cup Water

Method:

1.Roast the til dry till it turns slightly brown. Also dry roast the peanuts.

2.Make powder of both ingredients.

3.Heat the kadhai for 5 minutes.

4.Put jaggery with water in a hot kadhai and mix well till it melts.

5.Now add ghee and the powder. Mix well.

6.Make laddus from it immediately using greased palms.

7.Til laddus are ready.

Til Burfi (Sankranti Special)

Ingredients

1 cup Til(sesame seed)

1 can Condensed Milk

1/2 stick Butter

1 cup Milk Powder

1 cup Jaggery

Method:

1.Roast the sesame seeds in a dry skillet.

2.Grind them coarsely in a blender.

3.Now heat the jaggery in a thick bottomed vessel till it melts completely.

4.Mix all the ingredients along with grounded sesame seeds in a glass dish.

5.Microwave the mixture for about 3 minutes.

6.Grease a tray with butter and leave aside.

7.Stir the mixture properly and microwave again for 3 minutes.

8.Remove it when bubbling starts.

9.Stir till it becomes thick.

10.Spread the mixture on greased tray.

11.Cut in squares when cool.

12.Til Burfi is ready.

Sweet Pongal (Pongal Recipe)

Ingredients

Basmati Rice 2 cups

Milk 1/4 litre

Arhar Dal 1-1/2 cup

Jaggery 50 gm

Cashew Nuts or fried Raisins 12-15 pieces roasted

Almonds 12-15 pieces

Cardamom (dried and grounded) 1/2 tsp

Ghee 1 tsp

Edible Camphor dissolved in milk 1 pinch

Method

Clean and wash thoroughly the rice and dal. In a deep pan, boil the milk. Add rice and dal and turn it on low flame. Stir in the jaggery until it dissolves. When the rice and dal are cooked, add raisins and nuts, grounded cardamom and edible camphor keep while stirring continuously. Pour ghee before taking off the fire. Serve it hot or cold as desired.

Sakkarai Pongal (Pongal Special)

Ingredients

Rice 2 cups

Moong Dal 2 cups

Gram Dal 1 cup

Water 6 cups

Jaggery 2 tbsps

Cashew nuts few

Raisins few

Coconut (grated) 1/2 cup

Ghee 2 tbsps

Method

Take rice, moong dal, gram dal in the ratio 2:2:1. Add water and pressure cook. Take vellam (amount should be 2/3 of cooked mixture) and dissolve in little water so that it just completely dissolves and heat it separately. Add the liquid part of this juice (which will be at the top) to cooked mixture. Roast cashew nuts, raisins, grated coconut in ghee and add this to the mixture and stir well. Add some extra ghee while serving.

Ven Pongal (Pongal Special)

Ingredients(Serves 2)

Rice 1 cup

Moong Dal 1 cup

Water 6 cups

Green Chillies 3

Ginger 1/4 inch

Ghee 2 tsp.

Whole black pepper 2 tsp.

Cumin seeds 1 tsp.

Turmeric powder - a pinch

Cashew nuts 10 - 15

Curry leaves

Method

Mix 1 cup rice and 1 cup moong dal .Add 3 times water (6 cups) and steam until it is over cooked. Cut 3 green chillies and 1/4 inch ginger into fine pieces. Take 2 tsp ghee in a frying pan and add 1 tsp whole black peppers, and 1 tsp cumin seeds. When the peppers burst add chillies, ginger pieces and a pinch of turmeric powder. Add cashew nuts and remove the pan when the cashews are roasted and begin to smell. Add this to cooked dal-rice mix. Add 1/2 tsp. salt, a sprig of curry leaves and mix well. Add some ghee while serving.

Puri Pongal (Pongal Special)

Raw Rice 2 cups

Curry leaves a sprig

Asafoetida a pinch

Red Chillies 3

Mustard Oil 4 or 5 teaspoons

Urad Dal 1 teaspoon

Channa Dal 1 teaspoon

Salt to taste

Water 1 to 2 glass

Tamarind a small lime size

Method

Soak rice for an hour, half dry in a towel and grind it (one by two) in mixie. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard, after sizzling add red chillies, curry leaves, asafoetida, channa dal, urad dal and salt. Mix the tamarind with water a little concentrated. Add it to the pan and add ground rice and fry. Add more water, mix and close with lid in sim. Open then and there to cup if the rice is cooked, and add water accordingly. The bottom will become dark brown and crisp. Remove from fire and serve with pickle or hot chutney.

Pesaratu (Sankranti Special)

Ingredients

1 cup Moong Dal

1 Onion (finely chopped)

1/4 tsp Ginger( finely chopped)

Coriander leaves (finely chopped)

1-2 Green Chillies

Salt as per taste

Method:

1.Soak the moong dal for about 4 hours in water taken in a bowl.

2.Wash them and grind to make smooth paste along with the chillies and ginger.

3.Add the chopped onions, chopped coriander leaves and salt to the above prepared paste.

4.Heat a flat griddle on high flame.

5.Pour the batter on it and spread the batter on the pan moving from center to the corners.

6.Give it the shape of round pancake.

7.Sprinkle little oil on its sides and cook it for 2-3 minutes.

8.Turn over and cook again.

9.Serve it hot with coconut chutney.

Methi Moong Dal

Ingredients

1/4 cup Yellow Moong Dal (soaked for 5 minutes in hot water)

2 cups Fenugreek Leaves (Methi) (chopped)

1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds (Jeera)

1 small Onion (chopped)

2 cloves Garlic (grated)

2 green Chilies (chopped)

1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder (Haldi)

1 tsp Bengal Gram Flour (Besan)

2 tsp Oil

Salt (as per taste)

Method:

Begin with heating the oil and put cumin seeds in it. When they start to crackle, add green chilies, onion and garlic in it and saute it for a minute.

Now, add turmeric powder, fenugreek leaves and salt to it and stir.

In this mixture, put 1/2 cup of hot water, along with soaked moong dal. Sprinkle Bengal gram flour (besan) over it and bring it to boil. When it gets boiled, turn the knob over sim.

Remove from the flame after 5 minutes and serve it with rotis and rice.

Methi Dal Dhokli Recipe

Ingredients

For Dal

1/2 cup Toovar Dal (arhar)

1/4 tsp Mustard Seeds

1/4 tsp Cumin Seeds (jeera)

1/4 tsp Fenugreek Seeds (methi)

10 Curry Leaves (kadipatta)

2 Cloves (laung/ lavang)

2 sticks Cinnamon (dalchini)

1 Bay Leaf (tejpatta)

2 small Red Chilies

1/4 tsp Asafoetida (hing)

4 pieces Cocum (soaked)

1/4 cup Chopped Tomatoes

1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder (haldi)

1/2 Lemon Juice

4 Green Chilies (slit)

1/2 tsp Chili Powder

1 tsp Ginger (grated)

1 tsp Ghee

1/2 tsp Jaggery

Salt to taste

For Dhoklis

1 cup Whole Wheat Flour

3/4 tsp Fenugreek Leaves (methi) (chopped)

1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder (haldi)

1/2 tsp Chili Powder

1/4 tsp Asafoetida (hing)

1 tsp Oil

Salt (to taste)

1/4 cup Chopped Coriander Leaves (to garnish)

Method:

For Dal

1.Wash the toovar dal and soak it in water for 15 minutes.

2.Thereafter, cook it in the pressure cooker, till it whistles thrice. Keep it aside and allow it to cool.

3.When it is slightly cool, whisk dal until it gets smooth.

4.Take a pan and heat ghee in it. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, cloves, cinnamon sticks, bay leaf, red chilies and asafoetida in it and saute, till the mixture starts emitting fragrance.

5.Now, add cooked dal to the above mixture, along with 3 cups of water, cocum, tomatoes, turmeric powder, lemon juice, salt, green chilies, chili powder, ginger and jaggery and cook it on simmer flame for 10 minutes.

For Dhoklis

1.Mix all the ingredients required for preparing dhoklis and knead to form firm dough.

2.Now, divide this dough into six equal pieces and roll out into thin chapattis.

3.Put a non stick tawa over the flame and roast the chapattis on it, from both the sides. Keep them aside.

To Serve

1.Before serving, boil the dal, put dhoklis in it and turn the flame on simmer.

2.Stir it every 2- 3 minutes.

3.Remove from the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve hot.

3 cups Plain Curd

6 cups Uncooked Rice

1 twig Curry Leaf (Kadipatta)

1 tsp Mustard Seeds

2 tsp Coriander Leaves (chopped)

2-3 Dry Red Chilies

2 tbsp Cooking Oil

Salt to taste

Method:

1.Wash rice, put it in a pressure cooker and cook it till done.

2.Take a small pan and put some oil into it. Heat the oil.

3.When the oil becomes hot, put mustard seeds, curry leaves and dry red chilies into it. Cook till the chilies are almost black.

4.While stirring, add curd and salt to it.

5.Now, add the cooked rice to the curd mixture and mix them well.

6.Garnish the rice with coriander leaves.

7.Curd Rice is ready to serve.

Coconut 1 finely-grated

Channa Dal 1 tsp roasted

Urad Dal 1 tsp roasted

Asafoetida (heeng) 1/4 tsp

Turmeric Powder 1/4 tsp

Assortment of vegetables, excluding salad and leafy vegetables and beetroot (cut and diced)

Method

Blanch the diced vegetables and set it aside for later use. Grind channa dal, urad dal, asafoetida and green chillies to a paste. Heat ghee in a separate shallow pan and add the grounded paste. Fry lightly till it emits fragrance. Add the grated coconut and saute it over a low flame. Add the blanched vegetables and cook till done. Add salt to taste. Serve hot.

Method

Boil milk in a pan. Add the Aval or rice flakes into the boiling milk. Stir constantly until the quantity reduces to one-half. Add sugar and the powdered cardamom into the consistency and stir well. Add the cashew nuts (preferably roasted) and the raisins and serve it hot.

Makar Sankranti Celebrations

This festival is celebrated differently in different parts of the country.

Andhra Pradesh

It is a four day festival in Andhra Pradesh

Day 1- Bhogi Panduga (Bhogi)

Day 2 - Pedda Panduga,SANKRANTI (Surya)

Day 3 - Kanuma Panduga (Kanuma)

Day 4 - Mukkanuma

The first day of festival is Bhogi. At dawn people light up a bonfire with several old articles in their house. In many familities they celebrate Bhogi pallu, in the evening. These are the regi pallu with petals of flower and coins of money, will be put on the heads of kids(generally younger than 3 years)(like talambralu) to get rid of Dishti(drushti). The second day is Sankranti, the big festival, when everyone wears new clothes and pray to their favourite God by offering them sweets. Kanuma Panduga (Kanuma) is less celebrated but is an integral part of Sankranti culture. Mukkanuma is famous among the non-vegetarians of the society. People do not eat any non-vegetarian during the first three days of the festival and eat it only on the day of Mukkanuma.

Sankranti usually represents all the four days together. It is celebrated in almost every village with adventurous games in South India. Whether it is the cock fights in Andhra, Bull fighting in Tamil Nadu or Elephant Mela in Kerala, there is huge amount of illegal betting but the so called tradition continues to play a major role in the festival. Another notable feature of the festival in South India is the Haridas who moves around begging for rice wishing luck to the household. Rangoli competitions too are a common sight. The entire month from mid-December to sankranthi is celebrated with giant rangolis in front of the house which are drawn only at late night for the entire month. For all other days of the year, rangoli is typically drawn in mornings only.

Orissa

It has a special significance in Orissa. It's a most precious day for Oriya people. Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of the Sun's journey to the Northern Hemisphere (Makara raasi), signifying the onset of Uttarayana Punyakalam. Makar Sankranti is celebrated with gusto in mid-January when the Sun enters the orbit of capricon. The sun god is worshipped with great fervour and enthusiasm by one and all. The festival can be best enjoyed at Kalijai (an island in Chilika), Atri (Khurda), Ghatgaon, Keonjhar, Jashipur, puri and Jagatsinghpur. A special kind of sweet rice is offered to the local god and goddess. In Jagannath temple at puri this festival is observed as Uttarayana Yatra and Uttarayan Vandapana of lord Jagannath. This special sweet rice (Raw Chawal) is made with sugar, Banana, Cheese, Piled coconut, Camphor and black pepper and offered to the God. This special rice is popularly known as "Makara Chaula"

Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu Sankranti is known by the name of 'Pongal, which takes its name from the surging of rice boiled in a pot of milk, and this festival has more significance than even Diwali. It is very popular particularly amongst farmers. Rice and pulses cooked together in ghee and milk is offered to the family deity after the ritual worship. In essence in the South this Sankranti is a 'Puja (worship) for the Sun God.

Maharashtra

In Maharashtra on the Sankranti day people exchange multi-colored tilguds made from til (sesame seeds) and sugar and til-laddus made from til and jaggery. Til-polis are offered for lunch. While exchanging tilguls as tokens of goodwill people greet each other saying -- 'til-gul ghya, god god bola' meaning 'accept these tilguls and speak sweet words'. The under-lying thought in the exchange of tilguls is to forget the past ill-feelings and hostilities and resolve to speak sweetly and remain friends. This is a special day for the women in Maharashtra when married women are invited for a get-together called 'Haldi-Kumkum and given gifts of any utensil, which the woman of the house purchases on that day. Hindus wear ornaments made of 'Halwa' on this day.

Karnataka

In Karnataka, the festival is marked by visiting one's friends and relatives to exchange greetings, and by the preparation of a dish called Ellu (made with sesame seeds, coconuts, sugar blocks, etc). A common custom found across Karnataka is the exchange of sugarcane pieces and Ellu with one's neighbors, friends and relatives. In Karnataka, Pongal is known as 'Sankranti', and cows and bullocks are gaily decorated and fed 'Pongal'- a sweet preparation of rice. In the night a bonfire is lit and the animals are made to jump over the fire.

Makar Sankranti is marked by men, women and children wearing colorful clothing; visiting near and dear ones; and exchanging pieces of sugarcane, a mixture of fried til, molasses, pieces of dry coconut, peanuts and fried gram. On this auspicious day, people in Karnataka distribute Yellu and bella (Sesame seeds and Jaggery) and greet with the words "Ellu bella thindu, Olle Maathu Aadu" (Eat sesame seeds and speak only good). The significance of this exchange is that sweetness should prevail in all the dealings.

Gujarat

In Gujarat Sankranti is observed more or less in the same manner as in Maharashtra but with a difference that in Gujarat there is a custom of giving gifts to relatives. The elders in the family give gifts to the younger members of the family. The Gujarati Pundits on this auspicious day grant scholarships to students for higher studies in astrology and philosophy. Kite flying has been associated with this festival in a big way. It has become an internationally well-known event.

Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, Sankranti is called 'Khichiri'. Taking a dip in the holy rivers on this day is regarded as most auspicious. A big one-month long 'Magha-Mela' fair begins at Prayag (Allahabad) on this occasion. Apart from Triveni, ritual bathing also takes place at many places like Haridvar and Garh Mukteshwar in Uttar Pradesh, and Patna in Bihar.

SIGNIFICANCE OF MAKAR SANKRANTI

Sakranti is a word of Sanskrit language and it means transmigration of sun from one to another Rashi. Hence total 12 Sakranti falls a year but Sakranti festival means maker Sakranti when sun transmigrates from Dhanu to Makar Rashi. Makar Sakranti is celebrated on basis of solar calendar so its date remains same for years. It’s celebrated on 14^th January every year. It’s basically a harvest festival and is celebrated with innumerable reasons and ways to celebrate all over the Indian Subcontinent.

The festival is known with many names like Makar Sakranti in Andra Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa, Bihar,Karnataka, Jharkhand, Bihar, Kerala, Orissa, Maharashtra, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh; Uttarayan in Gujarat and Rajasthan; Maghi in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana; Pongal in Tamilnadu, Magh Bihu or Bhogal Bihu in Assam valley; Shishur senkaraat in Kashmir valley; Makar Vilakku in Sabrimala Temple of Kerala.

This festival is celebrated in other countries also with different names like Maghi in Tharu people of Nepal and Maghe Sakranti in other people of Nepal; Songkran in Thailand, Pi Ma Lao in Laos; Thingyan in Myanmar; Moha Sangkran in Cambodia.

Significance of Makar Sakranti:

As we discussed that there are innumerable beliefs behind celebration of this festival; Here are a few of them:

1. Its believed that Sun(Surya) visits the house of his son Saturn(Shani) on this day and stays for a month.

2. Its believed that Day and Night for deities are of 6 months and on Makar Sakranti day of Devtas starts so its also called Uttarayana.

3. On this Day Lord Vishnu ended terror of Asurs and buried their heads under Mandar Parvat. So this day signifies end of all negatives.

4. On this day Maharaj Bhagirath finally succeded in bringing river Ganga to the earth and performed Tarpan for 60000 suns of maharaj sagar who burnt to ashes at the ashram of Kapil muni. He performed tarpan at Ganga sagar of present day and every year great fair is organised there and thousands of people performs tarpan for their ancestors.

5. On this day Bhishma pitamah of Mahabharata who was blessed with boon of ichcha mrityu decided to leave his mortal coil. He was lying on bed of arrows till this day. Its believed that who dies in Uttarayana becomes free from transmigration of soul.

6. Sikhs celebrates this day as Maghi. On this day Guru Govind Singh discarded beydaava of 40 sikhs.

Practices:

On this day its believed that donating clothes, eatables, money to humans or grass to cows washes the earlier sins of human and god blesses him with heaven after his or her death. Bath also has great significance on this day and in many states its said “Raja ka daan aur praja ka snaan” means donation by king and bath by common man carries equal importance. Til-Daan is also a very popular practice on this day.

This festival, unlike other Hindu festivals, is not dependent on the position of the moon, but on position of the sun. On this day, the sun enters the zodiac sign of Capricorn. To compensate for the difference that occurs due to the revolution around the sun, every eighty years the day of sankrant is postponed by one day. In the present period Makar-sankrant falls on 14th January.

Sankranti History

Makar Sankranti marks the day when the sun begins its northward journey and enters the sign of Makar (the Capricorn) from the Tropic of Cancer. It is like the movement of sun from Dakshinayana (south) to Uttarayana (north) hemisphere. It is the one of the few chosen Indian Hindu festivals which has a fixed date. This day falls on the 14th of January every year according to the Hindu Solar Calendar.

Sankranti means transmission of Sun from one zodiac in Indian astrology to the other. As per Hindu customary beliefs, there are 12 such Sankrantis in all. But the festival is celebrated only on the occasion of Makara Sankaranti i.e. the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius ('Dhanu' Rashi ) to Capricorn('Makara' Rasi). In this case, the zodiacs are measured sidereally, and not tropically, in order to account the Earth's precession. That is why the festival falls about 21 days after the tropical winter solstice which lies between December 20 and 23rd. Here the sun marks the starting of Uttarayana, which means northern progress of Sun.

It is believed that the great Bhishma of Mahabharatha who had fallen to the arrows of Arjun and who had a boon to choose the time of his death, waited on the bed of arrows to depart from this world only during this period.

Tungarli Lake, Lonavala

This lake is at north of S. T. Stand near Tungarli village. The hill gives a beautiful view of Rajamachi, Lohagad, Tungarli Lake is an artificial reservoir in Lonavala. This lake is the major source of water supply to Lonavala city. There is a dam across the Tungarli Lake. During monsoons the lake fills with water and during summer the scarcity of water is a common problem.

Khandala Valley is also known as Khandal Dari or even Canian Track for some. This is the only place which is advised not to be visited in rainy season. The place is favorite of all trekkers. Dukes Nose

Also known as Nagphani, Duke's Nose is a place ideal for those who like adventures. Mahadevi temple has been built recently built over here. Tiger's Leap, Lonavala

Popularly known as Vagdari. You also find the Echo point over here. Nagphani and Tiger's Leap close to each other, hence often visited at a time. When viewing the valley from a certain point at this location, one has the illusion of a tiger leaping across the valley, hence the name. The echoes caused by dropping rocks into the crevasse is another attraction.
