HDD v/s SSD : Difference | SSHD | Speed | Which is better ?

While choosing a PC or when looking for storage devices we always come to a question that is HDD or SSD? And to get out of that question we must know what are they, what are the differences and which is better. Keep on reading this article I will leave you with the answer.

HDD

HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive. Hard Disk Drives had been used for a long time. They are not a new thing to look at. They work based on a revolving disk.

It has a magnetic-sensitive platter that stores the data and an arm which reads/writes the data. There is a motor to spin the platter as well as to move the arm. Some circles called tracks are on the platter and those tracks have logical units called sectors.

These tracks and sectors are used to store and organize data. Some algorithms are there which process the data and check for errors before writing the data.

You may have seen some values measured in RPM such as 5400 RPM, they are some values for the speed of the platter, the higher the speed will be the faster the disk will be able to read and write.

Benefits

The HDD provides more space at a certain price as compared to SSD. They have a smooth and proven technology used in them. They are good if you need more storage.

Drawbacks

HDD has a revolving disk so it may take a little more time to read and write. They are heavier also. These mechanical parts don't fail but seldom they fail at some laptops due to overloading. Their durability is also a doubt which can be nearly 5 to 7 years on average.

SSD

SSD stands for Solid State Drive. Its name suggests that it is in solid form which means it does not have any moving part and it is fixed. They are just a new line of technology which is more faster and efficient.

It uses NAND technology which is a kind of flash memory to store data. The gates in the device are arranged in blocks whose size can vary. The blocks consist of grids made up of various rows and columns.

Reading and Writing data is a smooth process but while updating data a sort of process is done in which the old block of data is removed and a new block of data is introduced.

There is an SSD controller that keeps track of the data. The SSD controller also helps in terms of retrieving data. There is a process called Trim in which a block is skipped in the process of rewriting. A block has a certain limit up to which it can be further rewritten.

There are some advanced algorithms used in the SSDs to make sure that every block has the required no. of rewriting chances. This process is called wear leveling.

Benefits

SSD loads very fast and is really efficient. They have not many physical contents so they are light and can withstand accidental drops. They load the games, software, codes, graphics faster.

It is suggested to keep your OS in the SSD so you get fast loading in the system. Its lifespan is also very high and can keep data for a longer period.

Drawbacks

SSD is very expensive compared to HDD. At a certain price, the storage space is low. SSDs are found very rarely in local markets.

Now, What is SSHD?

SSHD is termed as Solid State Hard Drive. It is rare and can be seen on some laptops. Here what happens is, the system will comprise a 1TB or 2TB hard disk an then just nearly 8 or 16 GB SSD to keep the OS so that the laptop takes less time to get on and restart.

What's the difference between HDD and SSD?

HDD has advantages and disadvantages as well as SSD. The major differences are the technology used, the mechanism used, storage provided, price and efficiency.

HDD is available at a lower price but the technology and mechanism are primitive but the SSD comes with newer technology and the advanced mechanism is available at a higher price.

SSD is much more durable and shock-resistant than HDD. While HDD provides more space than SSD. The speed is the major thing where the SSD nails it!

While building a PC for you while selecting a storage device, you should be clear about your budget and requirement first. If you have an adequate budget and your demands are for faster processing then you should choose SSD.

SSHD is also a good option where you can go for 1TB and 128 or 256 GB SSD. You should install the OS in you SSD for faster response and the higher sized files in the HDD.

VAR (Video Assistant Referee)

VAR stands for Video Assistant Referee. It was used in the FIFA World Cup 2018 and this absolutely was praised a lot. This is a video technology used to assist the referees in decision making.

They are used to keep an eye on every corner of the match and to record each thing very clearly so there will be no mistakes in decision making. The match can pause at any moment to refer to the VAR team.

EPTS(Electronic Performance and Tracking System)

EPTS is a tracking system to track the real-time match. All the data and pieces of information are sent to the teams. Every team has 3 tablets to keep track of the team's performance. One is with the analyst, one is with the analyst on the bench and the other with the medical team. This system was first introduced at the FIFA World Cup 2018.

Goal Line Technology

The Goal Line Technology is the technology where the referee can refer to the GLT team to assure if the goal is scored or not. It has helped a lot in making a decision when there is a very very near situation whether the ball has passed the goal line or not. The entire 3D coordinates of the ball are tracked to monitor whether the ball had passed the goal line or not. It was introduced in FIFA World Cup 2014.

Smart Ball

This technology was introduced in FIFA World Cup 2018. It was used in the official ball of the world cup i.e Adidas Telstar Mechta. Inside the ball, there will be a chip that allows the ball to connect with a smartphone or tablet. From these balls, the coaches can record the data and manage specific training for the players.

Smart Shoes

Some of the shoe manufacturing brands are producing some smart shoes which use such technology where the shoes can be tracked as well as they can adapt any player's foot easily.

4K Broadcasting and VR

People can enjoy Football matches in High Definition 4K quality. This actually started in FIFA World Cup 2014 on a small scale but soon in FIFA World Cup 2018, it started to spread everywhere. At the present time, almost in all the broadcasting platform 4K broadcasting is done.

From the 2018 World Cup, the BBC has also broadcasted the matches in Virtual Reality in BBC Sport VR App.

GPS Training Vest
