by one of my favorite authors would provide an example of sampling, expected value, and confidence intervals in the first few pages. It was a great read. The main character is a computer whiz and an artist, who makes his living as a professional criminal. I thought that I had read all of Sandford's books, but must have missed this one.

Excerpts that reference the AP Statistics content are below.

It works like this: the casino advertises (and reports to the tax authorities) a given return on the slot machines. If that return is even a little lower than the rate reported, the income increases sharply. That is, if you report that your machines will return 95 percent to the players, but you really only return 94 percent, and a million bucks a night goes through the slots, you're skimming $10,000 a night. In a few months, that adds up to real money.

Exactly what we did was, we dropped dollars - and quarters and nickels - into slot machines and counted the return, and then ran the results through a statistics package. We wanted 98 percent confidence that we were less than half of a percent off the true return. We therefore needed to take a large random sample of machines and had to run enough coins through each machine that we'd get a statistically accurate return on each.
I'd chosen the target machines the first night, using a random numbers program in the laptop I carried. We'd been at it ever since, dropping the dollars, quarters, and nickels, doing the numbers at night....

Reference: Sandford, John 2003. The Hanged Man's Cross. There is a crossword for Chapters 18-19 and a crossword for Chapters 20-21. Please click on the links to access the crossword. If you have missed an assignment within these four chapters, you may turn your crossword in to be graded on accuracy to make up a zero.

Bonus Opportunity!

Next week is the first TSML (Texas State Math League) contest. All Pre-AP and AP students are encouraged to take part in the contest. It is a 30 minute - 6 question test. Students are allowed to use a calculator. AP Statistics offers one point on a test for each problem answered correctly. Please plan to participate on Tuesday October 21, after school in room 332, 335, or 338.

To get you in the spirit of the contest, I have copied a previous problem from TSML(1 of the difficult ones) pertaining to probability below. A worked out solution with a correct answer could earn you up to five bonus points. If interested, please turn in your solution by Tuesday, 10/21/2009. Enjoy!

All students at the Academy of Music and Math take both music and math. The probability that a student has an A in math is 1/6. The probability that a student has an A in music is 5/12. The probability that a student with an A in music has an A in math is 7/10. What is the probability that a student has A's in both subjects?

Topic Research in Evernote

You and your partner will choose one of the following topics to present to the class. The first four topics are on famous experiments in recent history. The links below will provide information on the topic. The other three are experiments that you and your partner will design and conduct using your classmates as subjects. All seven topics require a multimedia visual such as Prezi or Glogster to enhance your chosen topic.

http://www.evernote.com/pub/jmalpass/HawthornEffect
http://www.evernote.com/pub/jmalpass/TuskegeeSyphilisStudy
http://www.evernote.com/pub/jmalpass/StanleyMilgram
http://www.evernote.com/pub/jmalpass/StanfordPrisonExperiment
The Stroop Effect
Bean Counters
Locating States

Using Prezi for our Projects

The following presentation is a good overview on how to use Prezi to discuss a topic.
<iframe src="http://docs.google.com/present/embed?id=dhn2vcv5_238djxmbfhd&size=l" For many of you the majority of the first part is review. We will wait and do the second part (Residuals) on Thursday. The new information includes using formulas on your formula sheet to calculate the LSRL. You will also have to be able to interpret in sentence form the slope, r, and r^2. Follow the directions on the presentation.

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:
<a style="font:14px Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif;display:block;margin:12px 0 3px 0;text-decoration:underline;"
