My name is Katie Dempsey and I am the PGY1 Pharmacy resident associated with ACME pharmacy and Temple University. I am conducting a research project about telehealth and its potential implementation in community pharmacy settings. The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the barriers to conducting patient care services via video conferencing. For that reason, I am interviewing outpatient pharmacists who are experienced in conducting patient care services via video telehealth. If you are willing to participate, the interview will last about 20-30 minutes. You will be asked about your experiences and opinions surrounding conducting patient care services via video conferencing technology, and you will also be asked to answer questions regarding length of employment and length of performing video telehealth services. You will be audio recorded for transcription purposes and all responses will be deidentified and kept securely on a password protected laptop. I used some APhA, ASHP, and multiple free ADA CE programs (ADA - Healthmonix - Home) to meet the requirement. I continue to use a lot of ADA programs to keep up on my hours. Good luck!

Whitney,

The 15 hours is requires for CDCES certification. The Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) has a ton of free CE but you do need to be a member. For example, they have certificate programs in insulin pumps, CGM, connected data, etc.

In terms of other free CE, cgmeducation.net regularly has opportunities. There's also the IDEA program (https://pro.aace.com/educational-opportunities/idea-20-course-innovatin…), and APhA had a bunch of diabetes sessions at their annual meeting that can count for the 15 credits.

My name is Hannah Smith, and I am a pharmacist at a rural, independent community pharmacy in Topeka, Indiana. I serve as the Quality Coordinator for our DSMES program. Our program was created and implemented almost 10 years ago by our RD/CDE, Connie Lehman, who is still highly involved to this day. Our success is a direct result of our collaborative model and years of resilient work. It has been an uphill battle but SO worth it! Our program consistently helps patients decrease their A1c by upwards of 2% (compared with the national average of ~ 0.5%). We're happy to help you tackle this tough task. DSMES is such an important service for our communities! As Connie is an RD, she is not a member of APhA, but she is certainly happy to assist me in guiding you. Congratulations on being assigned such a valuable service to invest in! We are an independent pharmacy with a DSMES program accredited by ADCES (old name AADE), since May 2011. A different thing about our program is that I am an RD and so we are able to offer and bill for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) classes in addition to DSMT.

I would feel more comfortable answering your questions, rather than trying to think of things I would have done differently. I do know that the accrediting agency ADCES was very helpful to us throughout the process.

Hannah and I would be happy to talk with you over the phone or answer a list of your questions through email. Our pharmacy always is happy to help someone else get started in DSMES education.

Hello. I am wondering if I could get some input from more experienced pharmacist. I am a newly licensed pharmacist and just started working at a vaccination clinic. There are a team of nurses and pharmacist at the clinic who are responsible for drawing up the vaccines. I am only responsible for injecting the vaccines. I don't check the vaccines because I assume that they are drawn up correctly but my coworkers on separate occasion have noticed the vaccines were drawn up incorrectly and have turned back vaccine.

Today my coworker had brought to my attention a pfizer vaccine drawn up to 0.28ml on a 1ml syringe. One coworker said it doesn't matter, the other one said she would not administer it. I was not comfortable to be the one to administer it so I went and spoke with the IV rm people. I was told that it is fine and the pharmacist in charge just pulled plunger up to the 0.3ml line. So now I feel even worse because not only was the situation not corrected, now there is extra air in the syringe that would not have been there if I hadn't raised a question out of it.

So I am wondering what is the margin of error. Is between 0.28ml and 0.32 an acceptable error? Is between 0.26 and 0.34 an acceptable error? What happens if it is drawn to 0.28 ml and there is a 4mm bubble inside? Should I just ignore it and give the shot because patients won't be able tell the difference? Are there guidelines on what is the acceptable percentage of error? One time when it was drawn to 0.34 ml , I've seen a coworker just squirt a little back out while the cap is still on just so it is the correct amount. Is this acceptable or is administering a little more vaccine okay.

What are everyone's thoughts. I know the patient won't be able to feel the 0.02ml difference but when should I be alarmed and turn back the syringe?

Any inputs would be welcome.

As a pharmacist who has been practiced pharmacy since 1970, giving vaccines since 2003, and has participated in mass immunizations, you are not a machine. You are a professional. You are the last check for the patient. Mass immunizations are massive undertakings. All of us are humans and subject to error. Check every syringe. Check every product that you dispense.
