By 2112, our minds will be directly connected to computers. We think having Google at our disposal has changed how we think about knowledge retention, but imagine when that knowledge is literally integrated into your being. We will all know all that we need to know, together, by being interconnected with all the information of the world. The answers won’t be at our fingertips, they will be within us. And so goes any room for debate.

What will be at a premium in this new world? What will enable us to retain our unique stamp of humanity? Our unique ability to create ideas and concepts that go against the all-powerful norm of the factual. The ways of thinking and working that artists and designers embody so naturally will be in higher demand. They are the ones who are used to flying in the face of reality, of suspending disbelief to come up with what is next. These skills will be universally recognized as how we advance society’s future, rather than a nice “add-on” as they are perceived of today. Creativity will be the new currency of work, the world over.

THE NUDE WORLD OF DARAGH HUGHES

aRT

I’m in awe of abstract artists who with a few movements of their wrist and a few splashes of paint can create emotionally charged images in minutes. Perhaps it’s because my own style of painting is a little too constrained and over-thought-out and I just don’t have it in me to splatter paint on a canvas.
I’ve never come across Daragh’s work before, but after seeing this video of him in action I’ll be keeping my eye out for his work. He manages to capture the essence of the human body using energetic strokes that appear to be almost thoughtless. Simply stunning work….

MISS REPRESENTATION

Life

Yesterday evening I attended a screening of a new documentary Miss Representation at COFA. I found it insightful, shocking, inspirational, personally reaffirming and sad.

Sad because women are their own worst enemies; who too often fester in their own jealousy and scrutinise each other to feed their tarnished egos.

Sad because their self-confidence is so fragile that they become unconscious, subjugated slaves to the media. Some women are so preoccupied with how they appear to others and what others might think of them, that they become prisoners of the ideal aesthetic. This incarceration limits their potential to be the person who they truly aspire to be.

Inspirational because I have the knowledge to discriminate right from wrong, and because I am now more motivated than ever to inspire and influence my daughter and son, who are still young enough to have dreams and hopes that have not yet been influenced by gender inequality or the poison of the media.

My husband attended the screening with me (voluntarily) and said to me as we were heading home. Women could rule the world they have the power over men but don’t use it. “What power I said?” Sex. Men want it and have always chased women for it. Women have the upper hand but instead many demean themselves with it, instead of using it to their advantage. Women have something that men want. Its a primal need as well as a means of procreation. The greatest power of all is to create life.

So blatantly obvious, yet I’d never thought of it like that

I wish that this documentary was mandatory viewing for every 11+ year old. Not just girls that are about to step into puberty, but also boys. So that they too can be enlightened by the evils of the media.

PAPER ART

aRT

paper art

These paper art sculptures by Zim and Zou are really cool.
