First Circular

This is the first circular sent to you from the Organizing Committee of the 2008 Nineth Asian Physics Olympiad. We are now in the process of sending out the official invitation to the participating countries. Therefore we ask you to inform us the mailing information of your Minister of Education or equivalent representative.
We need to have his/her full name, title, and address. Would you please complete the following form of requested information and return it to me (preferably by e-mail) as soon as possible? (Please no later than 25th November, 2007.) A copy of the official invitation letter will also be sent to the indicated contact person.

The brochure on the 2008 9th APhO has been previously distributed at the 8th APhO in Shanghai, China. We can send you the brochures by regular mail upon your request.

According to the Statutes of APhO, each nation may send a team consisting of eight students and two accompanying leaders. The travel costs to and from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia are the responsibility of each participating country. Once the team arrives, all costs of food, accommodation, and transportation associated with the Olympiad are the responsibility of the Organizing Committee. As an established custom in the Asian Physics Olympiad, each participating country is encouraged to contribute a voluntary fee of USD1’000. We warmly welcome the observers and visitors from all nations who accompany their delegations. Observers will be charged USD1’100 each and visitors USD1’000 each.

At the opening ceremony of the 9^th Asian Physics OLIMPIAD

Excellencies from participating countries,

Distinguished guests,

And ladies and gentlemen,

On behalf of the Government of Mongolia, I would like to warmly welcome all the participants and honorable guests to the 9^th Asian Physics Olympiad. It is a great honor to host such an important and internationally recognized Olympiad. In this exhilarating event, the most talented students from the countries in this region will have an opportunity to show their individual creativity and practical knowledge in physics, to make friends with other students with different nationality, and to have a glimpse of Mongolian history and culture.

During the course of the national development and integration into the today’s globalizing world, the Government of Mongolia has been putting a high priority to the development of education. We have always underlined the importance of promoting quality education and nurturing talented children and youth. Our investment in education will always bear a long term benefits to the generations to come.

Competition is not the only goal that we emphasize in this Olympiad, but also fostering friendship and good will among our youth for common better future. Physics, particularly, has played a vital role in shaping up our modern society and greatly improving the welfare of humankind. Enhancing scientific human capital by promoting education and nurturing talents is the most important strategies in the development of the national economy in the new era of information communications and technology. Moreover, this is a very good way to encourage our young students to pursue academic and practical excellence in science.

To wrap up, I would like to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude to those who have supported and made a valuable contributions in making of this Olympiad such a successful event.

Total Solar Eclipse - August 1 2008

The next total solar eclipse will occur on the first of August in 2008. Much of the eclipse path crosses areas of the Earth that are not inhabited or are difficult to reach.

Starting near the northeastern tip of Canada the path moves northeast into the Arctic Circle over northern Greenland. It then passes over the Arctic Ocean to northern Russia moving south east into Siberia. Novosibirsk is one major city that the path covers before passing over the Altai mountains into China near the Mongolian border. The eclipse path ends in the middle of northern China.

Mongols are almost the only nation still keeping their nomadic traditions and lifestyle. Moreover, as nomads the astronomic knowledge was transferred down from generations with ability to determine quite precisely the year, month, day and timing by celestial locations of the Sun and Moon, other planets, stars and their constellations. On par with other Asian nations, the astronomy has been developing since ancient times as a science for Mongols with deep worship of the blue sky and eternal heavens. Also, Mongolia become a first among Asian nations to send its astronaut for outer space exploration as well as one of the countries to create a measurement instrument and conduct a space test of the Solar light polarization. Thus, Mongols are proud with many achievements in its astronomy and outer space research. There are many more folk tales and stories connected with explanations of astronomic phenomena. Therefore, in commemorating this auspicious specific tradition of Mongols, we have created the “O” sign, as first letter of the word “OLYMPIAD”, from the photo of the most interesting natural phenomena called “Diamond Ring”, taken by Mongolian astrophysics researchers during a total Solar eclipse occurred on 29th March 2006.
Some Additional Information

1. About Total Solar Eclipse on Wednesday, 29th day of March month of 2006

On Wednesday, 29th day of March month of 2006, a total eclipse of the Sun was visible from within a narrow corridor which traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow began in Brazil and extended across the Atlantic, northern Africa, and central Asia where it ended at sunset in western Mongolia. A partial eclipse was seen within the much broader path of the Moon's pen umbral shadow, which included the northern two thirds of Africa, Europe, and central Asia.

2. Observation Location
Mongolian astrophysics expedition has conducted observation of this solar eclipse in the location (φ= 43°16′64, λ= 42°30′08) on the mountain peak, named of "Elbrus" in the north Caucasus, Kabardino-Balkaria, Russian Federation) territory (at the Universal Time: UT= 11h15m) where the Sun height was about 43 degrees. The point of observation was comparatively higher than above the sea level (h=3094 m: by GPS hand measurement). The fact that a total eclipse of the Sun was observed when the Sun was located at the highest height or near the meridian (10h15.5m UT: exact timing of reaching the meridian by the Sun) as well as that the skies were crystal clear has provided an enabling environment for this photo shoot. Moreover, this was one of those rare opportunities and lucky moments for astrophysics researchers that further enhanced a scientific value of the taken material.

A coronal mass ejection (CME) is an ejection of material from the solar corona, usually observed with a white-light coronagraph. The ejected material is a plasma consisting primarily of electrons and protons (in addition to small quantities of heavier elements such as helium, oxygen, and iron), plus the entrained coronal magnetic field.

The first detection of a CME was made on December 14, 1971 by R. Tousey (1973) using the 7th Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO-7). And the photos of the natural phenomena, called "CME", were taken by Mongolian astrophysics researchers during the Total Solar Eclipse occurred on 29th March 2006.
