Booktalking the "Reading Rants" way!

Booktalking is a tremendous tool for promoting your collection and attracting readers. Join our speaker Jennifer Hubert, author of the website Reading Rants! Out of the Ordinary Booklists for Teens and book of the same title, in a fun, useful, interactive presentation. You will learn tips and techniques that will help newbie and seasoned booktalkers alike craft successful booktalks that connect young adults with books they will love!

Jennifer is a self-described YA librarian, book reviewer, author, quilter and reality TV junkie. She helps librarians connect with young adults, and helps young adults connect with books they love through her writing, blogging, and presenting. When she's not reading or writing about great young adult books, Jennifer works directly with teens in her position as the Middle School Librarian at the Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

In addition to Jennifer's presentation, we will also hear about the new Teen Spaces at Atlantic City and Camden County Libraries. There will also be time for you to talk and share with each other.

We promise you a day of engagement, sharing, and inspiration!

Libraries receive $40,000 to develop special ‘Teen Space’

The South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative (SJRLC) has selected The Atlantic City Free Public Library and the Camden County Library to receive $40,000 each in funding to create a special Teen Spaces as part of the SJRLC's "A+ Teen Space Demonstration Project".

The libraries will begin working on their Teen Spaces immediately with anticipated grand openings of September 2009.

“Teens can’t be asked to wait, especially in tough financial times, for a fun, free and safe space with access to new and creative technology, room to collaborate, and the kinds of things they want to read,” according to Karen Hyman, Director of the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative, which provided matching funds for the project. “At SJRLC, we were tremendously impressed with the libraries' proposals for the outstanding spaces and services that they planned for their teen communities.”

“We are excited to have this opportunity to expand services for teens in Atlantic City,” Atlantic City Free Public Library Director Maureen Sherr Frank said. “We are looking forward to developing a special area with new technology and educational resources in the Main Library to encourage learning, exploration and creativity.”

The Atlantic City Library will be fashioning a 985-square-foot Teen Space which will have a vibrant, colorful and modern look. One of the most visually dramatic aspects of the space will be a large mural designed by graffiti artist Stephen Stuart-Gibson, who will seek teen input and participation in creating a design. There will also be a wall for a teen art gallery.

The Camden County Library will be converting 1245 square feet for use as the Teen Space. "The space encompasses a significant area of the Vogelson Branch's first floor," said Linda Devlin, Director of the Camden County Library. "We're excited about expanding our teen services and giving the teens more of the technological tools they need to learn, explore and hone their skills, all in a safe, stimulating space."

At both libraries, the Teen Space will be a casual, teen-only area for teens to gather, and it will include work stations, modern lounge furniture, meeting and program space, music, video and animation technology as well as a quiet zone designed for teens to read, study, or use computers for homework or research.

The SJRLC's public library members were invited to submit proposals for this project. The SJRLC will give $40,000 in funding, including $10,000 of a special grant for their A+ Project from the New Jersey State Library. The Atlantic City Library will provide a match of $35,000, bringing the total devoted to their project to $75,000. The Camden County Library will provide a match of $35,900 bring the total devoted to their project to $75,900.

The A+ Teen Space Project was made possible with funding from the Atlantic City Free Public Library, The Camden County Library, The South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative and New Jersey State Library, which is responsible for the coordination, promotion and funding of the New Jersey Library Network.

Announcement of RFP SJRLC A+ Teen Space Demonstration Project

The South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative invites proposals from SJRLC member public libraries to serve as the demonstration library for the SJRLC A+ Teen Space Demonstration Project

Borrowing ideas from the very successful ImaginOn facility at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (NC), the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative will match Transformation Grant funds from the New Jersey State Library and a selected SJRLC member library to replicate aspects of these services in Southern NJ and to serve as a model for other New Jersey Libraries.

Our goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for teens that responds to their likes and needs as digital natives in the 21st century through an incubator teen space project.

Update on Teen Entrepreneurship Program

The contest that I discussed at the A+ Partnership meeting last August has been launched, and will be open to Burlington County high school students. I am grateful to Dee Venuto (RVHS) and Chris Durling (Bordentown High School) for being on the "working group" and helping with this contest as it unfolds. Also helping are BCLS staff Andy Woodworth, Dawn Ferris, Adam Crockett, Jo Horton, and Marge Delaney.

Detailed publicity has gone out to Burlington County High Schools announcing the launch of this exciting contest this fall. The contest, run by the Burlington County Library System, is co-sponsored by the NJ Small Business Development Center at Rutgers and Friends of the Burlington County Library, Inc. The flyers and posters we mailed to Burlington County High School Librarians/Media Specialists should arrive in the next few days. We also emailed Burlington County high school business course teachers, principals, and others to publicize the contest.

Calling Teens with Entrepreneur Dreams: Make your ideas pay (up to $1,000 cash) in Burlington County Library’s Business Idea Challenge!
“Make it Pay in a Globalocal Way” is the theme of the challenge. The contest website is now online for student teams to sign up: http://explore.bcls.lib.nj.us/globalocal

Burlington County students (grades 9 -12) with visions of being the next business whiz will be excited to learn that they can now sign up for a business idea challenge running this fall:

Come up with an idea to “Make it pay in a globalocal way,” and have a chance to win big!

Prizes include a $1,000 first prize, $500 second prize, and cash prizes for all semi-finalist teams. According to Library Director, Gail Sweet, “Taking part in a contest like this is a real boost for a college application or resume.”

“Globalocal” means looking at local needs or markets in ways that could potentially have impact on a larger…even global scale. Students are asked to explore local needs or markets, and come up with an idea for a product to sell, a service to provide, or a way to put spaces or places to better use. The thinking behind this contest is: When we act on our money-making ideas we can have an impact close to home, and maybe change lives around the world!

The contest website has been launched at http://explore.bcls.lib.nj.us/globalocal. The site is packed with useful information for participants, including full contest details, timeline, and online sign-up form. The deadline for participants to register is 11/5/08. Contest entries will be accepted until 11/17/08.

The contest, run by the Burlington County Library, is co-sponsored by the NJ Small Business Development Center at Rutgers University, Camden, and Friends of the Burlington County Library, Inc.

The contest is being run in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week, November 17-23, 2008. Global Entrepreneurship Week (http://www.unleashingideas.org/country/US) will involve millions of young people around the world in a growing movement to generate new ideas and seek better ways of doing things. Dozens of countries are coming together to host activities for this initiative to inspire young people to embrace innovation, imagination, and creativity. To think big… To turn their ideas into reality… To make their mark!

The Read/Write Web has changed the way our kids consume and create information. Let's explore the critical skills they will need in order to be effective and ethical citizens in the new information economy.

Alice Yucht has been an educator for over 40 years, as a teacher, public and school librarian, curriculum consultant, conference planner, professional development provider, writer, editor, life coach, and stand-up comic. Now retired from full-time work in the trenches, she teaches online courses, mentors new school librarians and teachers, and gets to read anything she wants, whenever she wants.

We are currently putting together the Second Annual A+ program on service to teens. We promise you a day of engagement, sharing and inspiration!
