Oriental Life Insurance Company, the first insurance company of India, was started by Europeans in Kolkata in 1818. The purpose of this company was to cater to the needs of European community. There was discrimination among the life of Europeans and that of Indians in the pre-independent era in India. Higher premiums were charged for lives of Indians in comparison with the lives of foreigners. Later in 1870 Bombay Mutual Life Assurance Society, the first company for Indians was established who covered Indian lives at normal rates.
As soon as the twentieth century started, companies in this field started growing up like mushrooms. For the first time the insurance business was regulated in the year 1912 as the Life Insurance Companies Act, and the Provident Fund Act were passed in that year. According to the former Act, 1912, it became necessary that the premium rate tables and periodical valuations of companies should be certified by an actuary.
National Insurance Company Ltd., founded in 1906, is still in existence and doing business today. There were only two type of insurance viz. life i.e. LIC and general i.e. GIC.
General Insurance Company had four subsidiary companies. With effect from December 2000, these subsidiaries have been de-linked from parent company and made as independent companies: Oriental Insurance Company Limited, New India Assurance Company Limited, National Insurance Company Limited and United India Insurance Company Limited.
Insurance in India is still a growing sector with huge potential. This sector in India has gone through a number of phases and changes, particularly in the recent years when the Govt. of India in 1999 opened up the this sector by allowing private companies to solicit insurance and also allowing FDI up to 26%. Ever since, the Indian insurance sector is considered as a booming market with every other global company in this sector wanting to have a lion's share. Was wondering how would it be if we can share the way the workshop was approached - thread bare so that all the alumni members know what it means to conduct a workshop at the school.
Here is the First Part of the Talent Transformation 2008 Workshop:

3rd Nov 2008 -
There was a mail from Narendra UP, one of the alumni volunteer writing to some of the volunteers about the next edition of C & D Workshop. Suggestion was to have a One day Workshop with sessions on Personality Development, Career Development and Communication. As the mails started to criss-cross between the volunteers there was a general idea about the way the workshop would be conducted.

4th Nov 2008 :Teleconference:
"Gents....I will call you all at 6.30 PM(Sharp) this evening... keep your cell phones free. " That was Raj writing to the volunteers. The minutes were recorded and was circulated with all the Volunteers. Some excerpts of the minutes are as below:

The program has been tentatively been decided to be handled for a one day on Dec 6th Saturday – 08
A dry run of every assimilators session would be done before the program
Every attendees (Assimilators/Volunteers) to strictly adhere to the Workshop rules – Ethics/ Conduct/ Language/ Social being etc
Assimilators for the sessions to have a min of 4-5 yrs of experience in their respective field

OWNERSHIP:
The Entire Program Ownership/Conduction would be taken by xxxxx
The Coordination with the School authorities would be handled by xxxx
Mail Communication with the entire fraternity would be the responsibility of xxxx
Identification of Assimilators – to be shared by all.
Identification of Volunteers – Responsibility to be shared by all

As people started to get on executing their assigned responsibility, there was more response from the alumni members who volunteered to take this task up for the benefit of their JNV ckm students. Somewhere along the line it was decided that we should rename the workshop to Talent Transformation rather than Career and Development. After a lot of huffs and puffs, discussions, debates, agreements, disagreements all the volunteers decided again to have a physical meet at Lalbagh (not forgetting many tele-conferences).

15th Nov 2008: Lalbagh
Many of the volunteers turned up and the whole programme was discussed thread-bare again.
Some excerpts from the minutes..

some points in the feedback collected by Akshatha from her class mates/12th students form school were as follows:
a. Give Inputs on various colleges
b. Certain sessions were going offbeat & political discussions were been done – Avoid
c. Discuss on the economic crisis
d. Give inputs on scholarships/ Education loans
e. Class XII is listening to the same sessions repeatedly
The title for the workshop was decided as “Talent Transformation”
The Draft schedule for the workshop was presented by xxxxx & discussed by all
The Interpersonal Skills session at the evening would be open to all & would be handled by an external facilitator – a friend of xxxx, who works in Juniper Technologies & has a total of 8 years of professional experience
The next meeting to be conducted on Nov 30th 3pm at the same venue in Vijayanagaar
Every session owners to submit the title and an abstract of their sessions by 18th Nov – Tuesday
Every presenter has to compulsorily prepare Presentation slides for the session.

and thats also when the initial version 0.9 of the TT - Talent Transformation was came up.
In the mean time there was a discussion on how to go about the counselors. After a prolonged discussion one of the senior volunteers took the responsibility of coming up with the list of counselors. In the mean time mailboxes of every volunteer was pouring in daily with the updates/changes/modifications etc.

27th Nov 2008: New Development: We all got to know that our school got awards and some of the teachers wont be present on 6th Dec. Hence it was decided that we would postpone the workshop by a week. This new development created a drastic changes in our plans. Many had to cancel/postpone their plans. One of the Volunteer had to drop out because of the changes in the dates. Nevertheless the enthusiastic bunch of volunteers still stuck together.

29th Nov 2008: House of the President.
Due to sudden changes in the plans, the meeting was preponed from the earlier 30th to 29th and everyone who had shown interest in the volunteering activity was called to attend this meeting where some more refinements of the programme was discussed. Excerpts of the minutes.

xxxx on the phone confirmed the Assistant commissioner’s acceptance for the postponed date
The Schedule was refined with a voting system where acceptance of every participant and review was sought.
The Curtain Raiser would focus on feedback videos, Workshop footsteps video & introduction of members.
There was a opinion on how the last session should go on. A voting saw all 100% towards panel discussion. Rather than speak on the various careers, a panel discussion with participants from diverse field would be selected and discuss on the various career fronts. This discussion would be hosted by xxxx. The mentors would collect the various queries on careers from their group students, collate it and give it to xxxx
The III Slot would be the Interpersonal skills by xxxx followed by a open House & Conclusion
xxx proposed a session on the different careers, specifically the women would opt for. Like Fashion designing, Interior designing, Journalism etc
A proposal on hiring a TT was also mooted. This would be finalized after looking at logistics.
Next Meeting would be on the 7th Sunday morning. Venue & Time would be intimated to all

1st Dec 2008 : One more new development - 10th & 12th students will be having their pre-board on exams on 13th dec. Again a teleconference and it was finalised that the morning session will be for 9th & 11th and Afternoon sessions will be for 10th , 11th & 12th.

7th Dec 2008 : Vijayanaga Park
As everyone discussed about the contents of their individual sessions along with the slides a final meeting was held at this venue. Thats also when the schedule was finalised and a Motto of the workshop was finalised " Yes!! we will!! (which was later published to the alumni group) Posting the excerpts of the minutes

The Team division was decided. The teams would be formed on various domains team roles – (Journalism, Medical, Engineering, Hospital etc)
The Responsibilities of the Mentors was explained – Mentors would mentor the teams and would collate the career queries of the students and give it to xxxx– the host for Panel Discussion
The Responsibility of the Counselors was discussed
The presentations of the Facilitators should be mailed latest by Wednesday evening
Dress code – Formals
All the volunteers have accepted the plan of traveling using a hired vehicle
The TT would leave at 6 pm from Bengaluru

12th Dev 2008: Bangalore
Although some of the volunteers had not met in the previous meetings it took not more than few minutes for them to break the ice and it was fun all the way till chickmagalur.

After the completion of the C & D Workshop the feedback we received was satisfying. The feedback was very positive and we realised that the students of JNV learnt a lot in this workshop. All the feedback were collated and sent across to all the team members.

I was having so many dreams about my future, about my motherland etc. etc. But there was no idea about it. The way was dark & hopeless. But our dearmost brothers and sisters (old students of JNVB) had organised a wonderful programme to get an idea about our career development. They made us to laugh by jokes, we enjoyed very much in camp fire by performaing skits, tribal dance. They told us about the importance of communicative skills, emotional quotient, characters, personality etc. They informed about the opportunities which are available in this compitative world. So I get an idea about my glowing, beautiful future. I get confidence about achieving my dreams to get succeed in life. So I grateful to my dearest brothers & sisters. They became our close friends by their friendly nature, smile, suggestions, the style of speaking etc. They taught that, we should not feel we are inferior, we are disabled, I am not capable to do this work. We are all God’s gifts. If we are ugly, the beautiful will be there behind that ugly by a story of coconut. By different games & songs they made this weakend very beautiful. Now I am having a courage, confidence to compit in this vast world. I am also God’s masterpiece, I am living on this earth with a purpose, to achieve my goal, to sacrifice for my Hindustan. We improved our knowledge about outer world, various courses, how to communicate & adjust with people. These 2 days will be my memorable days in my student life.

I liked this programme very much and we are very interested for this 2 days (02-03 september)
We had a real fun and enjoyment and group working etc.
Lots of fun, happiness and enthusiasm and a intracting environmental skills and there was lot to learn from you.
This programme made many changes and now I am also dreaming that a day comes when we come to this school as a alumni’s. we enjoyed champ fire, we practiced only for one and half hour and performed well.
Now we had set a goal and may our further activities competitive and we are lucky to have this opportunity and I thank all alumni team members.

First of all I enjoy all the programmes of the workshop. We were funny at the same time I learn to be bold and I understood that I have talents with me but it should be showed. Team animator gave idea about how to behave in team. I thank all the members who have taken the pain to help us and guide us in right path. I liked this programme very much. I liked all games. I learnt more things from our Brothers and sisters of alumni, from our instructor Danappa I learnt a quotation or thought ‘When we lost/fail in something, we shouldn’t wait for time. We must make the things to happen/win’. I liked our instructor Danappanna very much, they participate in activities like dancing etc., But the Alumni team made that character to run away. In our school boys and girls not participated in together like dancing or any activities. The Alumni team made to participate each other like brothers & sisters, I liked this very much. We got an idea about team work and career guidance. We learnt about all things but ‘We’ means all students in school about 75% were not clear in speaking English language. The Alumni team gave idea to speak all the time in English.
We enjoyed very much in two days. We don’t know how these 2 days passed.

This programme is really a great programme. From this we got a maximum information about my career. It enlighted our minds not have an only goal to achieve. Career and Development Workshop

I was happy these two days with you all. The team games was very good and we learnt how to participate in a team together. I think this was the first time we participated in a competition where we have done our best in a small period of time. Our animator helped us in everyway. There was lot of enjoyment and we got information about our way for further studies. We learnt about words like Success, Personality, Character. We knew what is the team work. The team-games which were held these two-days were good and we worked hard to win.

Bro's an girls ( I cannot say sisters to everyone),

Before I start to keep my hands busy on key board here is big round of applause for Ravi Prakash, Nadig, Sushruth and Rajesh for all their efforts in making the Alumni meet a grand success and a memorable, heart warming experience.

22nd Jan 2006 - Day on which all good old school buddies of Shigod joined under one roof to share their experiences and to mark the dawn of new day for JNV alumni. Myself and Rajesh met at around 10:00 AM near forum to reach the venue. Lazy Rajesh had asked me to get ready by 08:30 AM itself as Ravi prakash had asked him to come little early to the venue to arrange for the meet. We reached the venue at around 10: 30 AM where Danappa and other seniors were standing right in the entrance to welcome their schoolmates. Everyone just started chit chatting about their school life and nobody could count the time. It was almost 11 AM when we all assembled in the MP hall (pseudo name for the venue - Lakshmi Venakteshwara Kalyana Mantapa) to begin the function. (How can it start on time when the person who prepared the agenda himself got late by 90 mins). Ravi Nadig delivered the welcome speech and commanded the whole function(P. E. Master). Everyone introduced themselves . Introduction took little long time and went on till 01 : Am as there were many latecomers to the function. Ravi Prakash shared the Balance sheet for last fiscal year and on the activities held by JNV alumni for the last year. Many of our seniors shared their thoughts on actionables and outlines set for the next fiscal year and believe me there were valuable thoughts except the one about the overbridge (No hard feelings). Mr. Ashok (1945-1996) is gonna send the minutes for the goals set for next year by JNV Alumni which were decided on the meet. Everyone were just getting of their energy levels as it was getting late for lunch. I don't who smelled the food that they declared the lunch break on spot. Ravi had arranged a delicious lunch (hard to get in Bangalore) for all of us and everyone just started batting right after getting on the floor. Each and every person at the lunch were just sharing their experiences at Navodaya and were batting at good strike rate.

Lady Icon of our School Mrs. Ramya Rani arrived at lunch time and met everyone with their ever lighting smiles. People were just walking around and meeting their bro's and sisters giving suggestions and sharing their memories at Shigod. Lunch break got over by 02: 30 PM and we assembled again at the hall to share our school experiences. One person from each batch were allowed speak about their batch in Navodaya. The interesting part was each batch were sharing their Chatri moments apart form other achievements and other sagas. Everyone just described what all tharle things they did in the school. It was good to see that they remembered each moment as if it happened two days back. Ravi Nadig (P.E. Master) was keeping track of time and did not allowed to speak about our batch completely. He was asking us to finish ASAP. Just kidding.. Its okay Nadig, we can understand that time is very precious for a tecchie. Then, it was fun time for all of us. Rajesh, Nadig arranged a DumbCharads session for all of us which had lot of fun. We had eight teams from around 100 people. The teams named themselves like Naanu, Shigod Siddha, Shigod Sizzlers, Enigma etc... Nadig identified the Oscar talent in the DumbCharards and the person who has it is Sandeep from 2001 batch. He was just awesome he could not convey Movie Baazigar to his team. It was really fun time for us and we all enjoyed each moment over there. Sun was just getting down every moment when organizers decided to call off the meet and asked Shipa to deliver the Vote of Thanks.

We had a singing session as a valedictory program where we sang all our Navodaya songs. This also was gr8 fun. Then we had little photo session and people were just giving their best postures to the photo shoot.

We formed a 14 member Alumni team which has >= 1 member from each batch and is responsible for all activates related to improvise the career path for all JNV'ians. This team discussed few value added thoughts (14 point note) after the meet which will be shared with all of you through email from one of our seniors.

I have few suggestions (might be nonsense also) but thought of sharing with all of you... Each batch person was getting along only with their batch mates and many people were left behind. Also, There were many students in the meet who needed our seniors and our advise/help related to their career path. They were uncomfortable to express themselves. Now, my request for everyone is to just step up and speak to our juniors and make them comfortable in expressing themselves. Many juniors > 2000 batch were left behind in the meet and they were not able to express themselves to all of us. We need to actively involve the representatives of their batches to get to their root problems. Please pardon if it sounded like nonsense to any of you...

I am really bad at ending sequences, and I do not know how to end this ever living experience which gave us an opportunity to live our Navodaya life once again for a day.

As the wind catches and the autumn dawns,
Old leaves part from their trees giving way to the newer, fresher ones.
So that we can celebrate life, so that we can celebrate spring,
So that birds can fly with their new wings!

Rajesh had sent a mail earlier with Alumni invite which had a quote "Some People Make Things Happen. More watch what's happening..Most wonder what Happened..!!" ,Now all of us who attended the meet really should feel happy that they are not the second part.

I am not running a spell check as I need to catch my sleep and it is already 55 mins past 1 in the night and need to catch my cab in next 5 mins. Let us keep the Jnv torch with full of colors and light. Kudos to all of you who made your presence on the day.
