When we open newspaper in the morning, some pamphlets or flyers just slip out of pages. Some people just ignore, few pick up and scan them and some may contact the advertiser to enquire. Each one of us react in various ways, depending upon our mood swing, interest and time factor. Some are wise enough to keep some useful looking pamphlets properly for later use. We hardly realize that how much money has been spent on printing and distribution of that pamphlet.

There are some issues which one must be aware with while advertising through pamphlets. Charge for distribution of 1000 pamphlets vary from Rs 80 to 150. How much one is going to pay depends upon his bargaining power. The newspaper hawker will give you a well-made out excuse that if you want good service (proper distribution) of pamphlets, then you need to pay well.

The distribution channel starts from the place where pamphlets are printed. That printer will guide you about the agent. The agent will get the distribution done through newspaper vendors and hawkers by paying them commission.

You will be amazed with the speed with which pamphlets are inserted into the newspaper. Today, when i reached the spot in Panjrapole at 3.30am, i saw in about 1 hour, 2500 pamphlets were inserted in newspapers by one hawker. Though i had specified that i want all my pamphlets to go with only The Times of India, i was said that it was very difficult and time taking task. I had to compromise.

It is important that you stand with your distribution agent while insertion, so that they don't do any mischief. Vendors and hawkers themselves claim that there are some among them, who don't insert the complete bunch of pamphlets in order to save time. Some are reliable, but not everyone.

Ahmedabad has a big community of businessman. So, number of pamphlets distributed daily are huge. On Sunday the number is quite high as readers are more likely to check pamphlets in relaxed mood with plenty of spare time Most businessman prefer Gujarati newspapers as they have higher circulation and demand.

There are printers in Ahmedabad who print 10,000 Black & White pamphlets in just Rs 1200. The quality of paper is very cheap. At the same time, glossy paper colour printing will increase the price many fold. The selection usually depends upon the type of target market and the product/service.

How effective are pamphlets in modern day is debatable with so many other medium for communication.
But, it's popularity does not seem to have diminished. Every businessman loves to try them.

Faster! Things are moving quickly.

Infrastructure of high quality, better healthcare facilities, political stability, budding entrepreneurs, good quality educational structures and growing businesses are changing lives every day.

Look around and you will find that this is a city where you can see wealth everywhere. Money is being made like anything. People have become more and more ambitious. As soon as people marry, couples want to have their own home and own car. Child can wait, but car is must. The thought process has taken a complete turn around. Who is going to wait for retirement to buy home? Most people are ready to pay home loan installment and live life working to get free. We have become slave of our wishes.

With the population graph crossing 60 lakh mark, city is spreading in all direction. Towers are coming up everywhere to accommodate the burgeoning crowd. Though 2 bedroom new house in Satellite area may cost more than 1 crore, there are buyers. Rent of shops and homes are just going upside, but who cares. Just watch the road for 5 minutes during any busy hour and this city will start telling about itself. You will see Audis & Mercedes zooming around. School going students riding bikes. Everyone will be seen in a hurry. Roads are overflowing with vehicles, struggling to contain ever-growing traffic.

No one has time - that's what we all say. You will find people who hardly know their neighbors. Restaurants are full of customers on weekends. Malls are becoming place to pass time. Some have closed down as their were more window shoppers than actual shoppers visiting that place. Yes! Multiplexes are doing good business, in spite of hardly 10 hit movies in a year. The reason being that there are few alternatives for entertainment. Sports for children are luxury. Where can you find fields or playgrounds? Builders are minting money and leaving no place empty. Computer games have become the left-over option.

Lifestyle has changed, living standard has improved, but relationships have taken the beating. Now, there is less trust, more jealousy, less interaction and more gossip. With the single child policy being voluntarily followed, there is death of brotherhood and sisterhood. One silver lining on this ominous cloudy sky is that there are more females joining job now. So, gender bias is loosing it's strong grip.

As it is always said, everywhere in the world, you can talk to a person and identify their place of upbringing. So, future of next generation will be an alter ego of this city. The way we will treat this city will impact our children.

Lets respect this city and we will do a very good job for our kids.

Serve Well or Perish Badly

We all are living in a world of ferocious competition. No business can afford to survive with lack-luster service.

Recently i have seen some examples which i am sharing with you which shows how simple things in business can harm or even kill the business.

First one, I went to ZOOMIN at Crossword at SG highway. The person at the counter was busy on phone, i waited for 5-7 minutes. When i enquired that person, if there is someone to attend me, he replied that there is con-call going on, so i may have to wait for half hour. The reply was terse and there was no politeness. He was not even concerned about the reason why i was at his counter. I went there again, same day in the afternoon, another person attended me, and i was just handed a brochure when i enquired about the T-shirt printing pricing and varieties. That could have happened at the first visit. Why the hell, i was given such service. I went there to know deeply about T-Shirt printing. Some information are available on their site. But, information given by the person who attended me on my 2nd visit was quite different.

Second one, my wife and her sister went to PINTOO to buy some dresses for my son. There clothes were not only very costly, even employees behavior was cheap. Specially, one employee behavior was so disgusting that they left the shop without buying anything. In the same building there is another shop named SHREE PRABHUKRUPA FASHION which sells children clothes of various varieties at reasonable price. They are into this business from last 50 years and are specialised in Ziayana & Childrens Wear. This is really an eye opener experience. A big shop with huge infrastructure failed where a small shop delivered proper service. Response and price were two factors which proved the make or break factor.

Third, about 5 weeks back, when i went to Srinath Jee, me and my wife went to Sankalp Restaurant for dinner. We were surprised to see that only few customers were there as the past experience suggests that one will have to wait. Finally, when the food came, it was stale and we were deeply disappointed. Staff numbers also seemed to be lower than on previous occasions. Sankalp has also closed down their restaurant which was in Wide Angle. I have been to this particular restaurant more than hundred times. But, it seems there is something wrong with the Sankalp Group. They are loosing their focus. I know they are now entering into real estate too. It will be sad if Sankalp looses their charm. I will miss their tasty Masala Dhosa. I have no information about their performance at many other branches. So, i am not in situation to give any strong statement. But, indications are ominous, if they don't regain their culinary touch.

These examples show that small negligence can turn the table for any business.

We all would be happy, if these things change at these mentioned places.

His profile is quite interesting and i will cover him in my next post. He is friendly and quite gentle. I was pleased to meet him. It will be interesting to know more about him.

As the heading suggests, these all are just different names of the most delicious snack that is sold all over India. In Ahmedabad , each nook and corner has someone selling Paanipuri (the name used here).

MahaLaxmi PaniPuri

It was just a co-incidence that i found the eatery named "MahaLaxmi PaniPuri". I was just standing on the opposite side of the road when i found many persons gathered in almost round circle eating PaniPuri. At that time, i decided to visit that place one day.

Today, almost after 2months when i finally went to that place, i saw the same scene. People were waiting for their chance. I had to wait for few minutes. I found out that MahaLaxmi PaniPuri is 40 years old and owned by Chacha and Bhatija. They have a unique way to serve their delicacies. They don't serve on plate, but hand over directly into your hand. This surprised me.

They must be selling more than 2000-3000 PaniPuris/day. The timing is from 3-6pm only. But, i am sure, by the closing time, they must be through with their tasty stuffs. The salted, minted, spicy and flavored water was so tasty that i have already started missing it. I am surely going to be these as soon as i get another chance.

Their business model seemed so simple. Just make the best product and no promotion is required. Word of mouth advertisement is enough for MahaLaxmi PaniPuri. Their taste is their brand. Just try!

Last 7 nights were full of noise, joy, beating of drums, songs, Garba, Dandiya and what not. From tomorrow (today is Ashtmi as well as Navmi), things will again become normal.

Ahmedabadis will miss loud sound of speakers which could be heard till late night. Youngsters will miss the freedom and housewives too will miss late night outs. Navratri is the only time, when city forgets to sleep and the only thing in everyone's mind is Garba.

Organisers at party plots have minted huge amount of money by charging to dance at a common place. This is that time of the year when a new record is created every time people go out to dance. Where else, except Gujarat, can we see thousands of people enjoying dance together at a common place? The best part is that such display of unity is really unique. Navaratri is all about madness for dance and celebration. It is also used as excuse and become means for reaching various ends for some.

Like all good things, it will come to a sweet end today and thus break many hearts. But, how will people wait eagerly for a year if it has no ending. So, just enjoy the moment.

It's personal, but i am sure you will be emotional. So, just read on.

Yesterday at Gym, a Sardarji who must be above 60 years was walking faster than me on the treadmill. He looked cheerful and there was no sign of any pain while he was doing cardio. He was enjoying every moment and age was just getting re-defined. I am surely going to take his interview very soon. It will be interesting to know what is driving him to do something which is rare, considering his age.

Today morning i was waiting for green signal at IIM cross-road, near the blind school. I saw a person near the foot-path who was holding a small girl of about 3-4 years in his arm. The eyes looked different and blank. I was feeling sorry for her. But, the next moment i saw something which almost broke my heart. The person was stretching his hand in front trying to check if he is going in right direction. HE WAS BLIND TOO! Before i could help them in finding their way, a young gentleman who was walking by, helped them. We get bogged down by simple problems and keep feeling frustrated. Just think about this person and his courageous attitude. He was taking her blind daughter to the Blind School. He seemed worried, but his face clearly resembled "a face of determination".

Third and last story is already there in today's TOI Mirror. 2 professionals working in telecom company who were earning more than 1 lakh/month have left their job to pursue their dream. They will roam India. They will not carry mobile or money. Complete story is there in Mirror.

No one knows what will happen the next moment, so just make the most out of every minute of the present. I am motivated by these characters. I love Ahmedabad where such motivated people live.

2nd Day & Night - Navratri

Second day was though uneventful for me, but the mood was obviously picking up -

10.30am - Office seemed to be empty as most people came late. No one seemed to be interested in knowing the reason. As it was very obvious tell-tale sign of Navratri. Red eyes, taking small naps in the lunch break and leaving office early are some things which all office employees take for granted.

Garba

7.15pm - Traffic is more that usual work days and people driving their vehicle in hurry is common. All want to reach home early, change clothes and just go to the dance floor. The traditional dance costumes of Navratri are Chania Cholis for women and Kurta Payjama or Kurta Dhoti for men. These dresses are bright and full of vibrant colours.

10.30pm - Night is like day time. Youngistan is here. Y generation are everywhere on the road. Lucky ones having their girlfriend and unlucky ones can be seen trying out their luck.

1st Night - Navratri

9.30 pm - Aarti Started - It's a rare occasion when for these 9 days of Navratri, every society gathers at common area and do "Puja & Aarti". Same scene can be seen in each society and apartment. It's a great way of strengthening solidarity and harmony. Time is fixed and and it is one way of starting the Garba every night by first paying homage to Maa Durga. This is very traditional and colorful.

11.30 pm - Traffic signals were still being followed at many crossroads, as during Navratri, more Ahmedabadis spend their night on roads then at home. Though it was the first night, one could see young boys doing stunt on their two wheelers to impress girls. Police presence was there at those place where chance of nuisance and hooliganism was more. Road side eateries/food vendors could be seen having brisk business. No one seemed to bother about any terror attack.

3 am - Roads were empty, just the sign of storm that is just building up. Within next 8 nights, it will reach to a level when at 3pm, traffic will still be heavy and noise as loud as it is at daytime.

Horses Around Us

At general discussions, the question that I have most frequently been asked by aspiring horse lovers is, “Which is the best horse breed?” and in spite of knowing that this has no answer, I often find myself wondering. My answer has always been, “The one that YOU like !”

There are hundreds of breeds of horses around the world, which have evolved over thousands of years to adapt to certain climate, conditions or functionality. People have bred horses for various reasons. The Thoroughbreds have been bred for their racing abilities and longer stride; the Arabians are known for their looks and enduring power; the Shetlands for their small size suited for carriages and riding for children; and the draught horses for load pulling and hauling. Every breed has some or the other purpose which they are good at. But in general, most of them are good for riding.

In India, we have 8 commonly available breeds from the equestrian family. They are the Marwari, Kathiawari, Sindhi, Thoroughbred, Manipuri, Zanskari, Bhutia and Spiti. There are also other crossbreeds of these that one can find, depending on what purpose one is buying a horse for.

When one thinks of horse riding, they always perceive it to be very expensive. It has been known as a sport of the kings. But you would be surprised to know that most of the equine population of India is found in the villages with poor farmers. The same activity becomes expensive if pursued in a metro city, but can be very affordable in a town or a village or even a city with the farmlands nearby.

The main costs attached to owning a horse is the feed of the horse, salary of the caretaker, medication and first aid, farrier charges and tack. It is possible to manage all of this, very economically and well within the amount one pays for charges at riding clubs. Within the same amount, one can own and keep a horse. This gives us the freedom to ride whenever we want and also breed from the horse if required.

Most countries adopt a system of sharing a horse, which makes it easier to afford, exercise and maintain a horse between 2 or more people. People share resources like space, time and expense in order to keep a shared animal comfortable.

Horse Riding is the only international sport, where men and women compete at par with each other in the same arena and there is no handicap given. Riding is a complete exercise and also helps to loose weight and remain fit.

The plot (Shantinagar Society, Usmanpura, Ahmedabad) has become so popular after 3 Jain Stone Stutes were unearthed that the price has gone to 10 crores from 7 crores in hours. Final price may be much higher. The plot has turned into a gold mine.

For every Jain, the plot has turned into a holy place. Soon, we may see a Jain Temple being built. Every newspaper at Ahmedabad has covered this story today. Every one is surprised and confused about these statues. Many versions are coming up regarding the presence of statues at this location, but no concrete information is there. Some feel that these are 500 years old, while government body says that they are only 100 years old. We can only wait till the truth is unearthed.

Ahmedabad keeps surprising it's people and today Mother Earth gave a precious gift when labors were digging ground for construction work.

3 Jain Stone Statues which seems to be very old were found. Devotees have started gathering at the spot. Some were seen collecting "mitti". Puja has started. Government bodies will soon join to make sure that everything falls into place.

Unique Parking Place!

A strange type of gender bias was noticed by me today and i thought that it must be shared. It is not only unique, but funny too.

Ladies Parking

In a society where we always talk about gender equality, we also silently see separate train boogies and dedicated ticket counters reserved only for ladies. Even there are seats in local bus reserved for them. I don't want to discuss that whether these things are right or wrong. I just want to share today's incident.

I was parking my bike in an empty space in the parking of Sukh-Sagar Complex (corporate house on Ashram road near Fortune Landmark). Suddenly i heard my friend asking me to move my vehicle from there. When i asked the reason, he stated that that parking space is reserved only for females. I was shocked. He told me that there are only Activa and Kinetic parked in that marked area. He made it very clear that the watchman will surely take out air from my bike's tyre if i will park in that "ladies zone. Looking amzaed, I saw the board which mentioned in Gujarati that parking is only for ladies. Just then i saw a man parking his Activa there. No one stopped him. He had no fear of any mischief happening with his vehicle. It was quite clear that he knew that his Activa will pass the "gender-test".

I realized that it's not actually a gender bias, but a bias of a very strange kind which is based on the false assumption that ladies drive two-wheeler without gayer, while men drive with gayer. Now a day, many girls can be seen driving bikes of all types. Probably the person who took this decision regarding parking is very obsessive about gender bias or himself/herself biased towards females. Whatever, whoever, however - this parking space is unforgettable and different.

Pirates of Ahmedabad!

Video/Music piracy is getting support from all wrong corners. In Ahmedabad, you can buy a CD/VCD/DVD of new film from a road-side vendor, the day it gets released in multiplexes. Though number of multiplexes have been growing in numbers and price of ticket varies from as low as 40 to 400 - depending upon the timing and sitting arrangement or facilities - many Ahmedabadis still prefer to buy pirated versions for convenience or to save money.

It's absolutely shocking to see road-side vendors openly selling these pirated VCD/DVDs. Even local administration seems to ignore it knowingly. Why the government is not taking any punitive action, it's a mystery. Buyers are aware that they are buying pirated version, but how many of them really know that it all does a huge damage to the film industry. Pricing of ticket is effected as producers try to compensate the loss due to piracy by raising prices of tickets.

Even local video parlors are selling pirated versions to lure their customers. We Ahmedabadis need to understand that the money paid for pirated versions are used for illegal purposes and it is a part of money laundering through "shadow business". There is a huge illegal market and all buyers are responsible for it's growth. Terrorism, drug-trafficking and other crimes are linked to piracy and we need to be sensitive about this.

Government must play a responsible part and all such vendors need to be stopped from selling pirated versions. Someone may say that they will loose job. But, are those people not skilled enough to do some other job, where they can earn similar amount in an ethical manner.

Till the Government wakes up, we need to stop buying or watching any pirated version. Do you agree?

1000 years old!

How many of you know that on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, there is a temple which is more than 1000 years old?

The name of this historical temple is Shri Somnath Mahadev Mandir. Those who have visited this temple have experienced that all their wishes get fulfilled if they visit regularly. There is a Diya which is always burning and has been brought from Somnath.

The Sawan month just completed. During this period, every Somwar, thousands of devotees visit this temple throughout the day. People come here from very far to get blessings of Lord Shiva who is famous as the God of creation as well as destruction. It is located In Fatehpur at Gyaspur road on Narol-SG Highway, near Toll Tax. It's surrounding is very beautiful and full of greenery.

When my friend, Paresh Jajjar, asked the main pujari that is there any story of miracle which he want to share. The pujari told this temple has lot many stories which are full of miracle and show the presence of Lord Shiva and that's why number of devotees keep increasing everyday.

Once Kapil Sibbal, Digvijay Singh & Chidambaram were travelling in a helicopter, Sibbal drops a 100Rs note & says "I made one poor Indian happy", Singh drops two 50Rs note & says "I made two poor Indians happy", finally Chiddu drops 100 coins of one rupee & says "I made 100 poor indians happy". Anna & the Road Ahead!

On 11th August, 2011- Times of India headline was

"Gujarat roads closer to international standards: WB".

I was surprised to read that at first, but soon realized that it mainly referred to highways which are obviously very well laid out and they make Gujarat one of the fastest developing states.

The headline was confusing as in Ahmedabad, we daily drive on the road full of pot-holes. We daily curse the goverment for road construction going on one place or the other. I have heard people saying that in Ahmedabad government does only two work which keep them busy - one to dig and other to fill those holes on the road. I don't understand - why the government repair roads just before monsoon, only to repair it again after monsoon? It's quite obvious that many tenders get open to just mint money. Why some road are not damaged by monsoon and some get so bad that village streets seem better? If corruption would not be there, we all will be driving on road which will increase our vehicle's life almost 20 times. Also there will be less road accidents. Am i right?

As we all are happy with the outcome of Anna's hunger strike and the support he got from the common people, the road ahead seems to be better. I am really talking about roads here, without any pun intended. I am sure if the Jan Lokpal Bill gets passed, we all will drive smoothly. There will be better road maintenance, swift construction of over-bridges and no traffic jam. There will be strict rules for those who break traffic rules. Bribe will not work and people will drive responsibly. So, lets hope this bill gets pass as early as possible.
