Eldar update and random stuff

Been a while!

College and the holidays have both conspired against my blogging and hobbying, but i have finally found some time to do this post and even some painting!

I have some very rough pictures of what i have been doing in-between essays, assignments and being a dad. One day I will remember to look into setting up a light box or a photo spot in my little painting dungeon, any advice welcome!

First up some updated pics of the Eldar I have been working on:

Banshees need a little finishing and basing, then they are ready to go.

Warp Spiders, again, need a little bit of finishing (I messed up the symbol on a couple of their heads, that's why some look odd as they have only have a thin coat to cover the mistakes so far) and basing.

Dark Reapers are waiting for basing and their weapons.

Harlequins are coming along, have just put the halves together and finished the Death Jester/Troupe master (I'm not sure about the hierarchy of the Eldar). I am pretty happy with how they are going, I had been a bit nervous about getting under-way with them as the motley sections on them didn't look like much fun! Turned out to be easier than it looked and not nearly as time consuming as I had feared.

Was also sent a Wraithlord to paint up in the Iyanden* scheme:

Am still getting used to my airbrush, but love how nice the yellow came out! still a lot of work to do, extra armour and details still need painting blue, but so far so good!

Have been playing Pathfinder RPG quite a lot too recently and have to say, the more I play the more I love the system!

I freely admit that I was always dubious of those strange creatures that played RPGs and never imagined I would one day be one of them! as if painting and playing toy soldiers wasn't geeky enough! lol.

It has really helped that my first forays into playing RPGs were with two VERY experienced and fun GMs and both groups I played with were amazing! however I did meet a group that included the stereotypical gaming pair (like these guys Fear of Girls) and ran for the hills.

Anyway, enough rambling about it, I have painted a few characters up for my ongoing weekly session of Pathfinder but typically I don't have them with me. A couple were painted for the GM and his wife and the latest (Eando Kline) has come out really dark and grainy in the picture :( Again, I really need to sort out a light box or something!

Finally, one of the best purchases I have ever made is the Pound-o-dice by Chessex. I got it from http://www.snmstuff.co.uk/ and oh biy was it worth it!

Not bad at all! and for all you war gamers, they do a pound-o-d6 too :)

Commissar and Eldar WIP

Sorry for the lapse in posting, I have started my college course and have been a bit side-tracked lately.

I did manage to finish my guard commissar:

I'm pretty happy with how he has turned out, I may go back and touch it up in a few places but for now he is done.

Next up I have been cracking on with the Eldar:

The Dark Reapers are nearly finished, I just need to paint up their weapons and get them based. I went for Charadon Granite mixed with Bleached Bone for the highlighting instead of Shadow grey and I am glad that I did. I painted the rune/symbol on one of them and will add it to the rest of them as well.

I have also been getting on with the Warp Spiders, they sill need a fair bit of work but should be done along with the Reapers in the next couple of days.

I still have a tonne of college work to do on top of my painting, so I am trying to get my table cleared as soon as I can without rushing the paint jobs. I still have the Howling Banshees and Harlequins to go as well as my own armies, so I need to sort out a good time table to allow me the time for my hobby as well as my work.

Will try to post again next week, depending on how I do for time. I will also stick another couple of mini tutorials together when I get the chance.

THQ - Space Marine

Sorry, not a painting or hobby post.

I finished Space Marine earlier today on my PS3 and all I have to say is

So much potential, and completely let down in the execution and story :o( hopefully there will be a sequel and they will come up with something a lot better.

I enjoyed playing the early levels, but the rest not so much; which seems to be the general consensus with most of the reviews for it, and the fact that I cant play it online doesn't help much either.

Hi folks,

Just finished off The Mighty Zug, who will be off to join the rest of his team shortly. I had a lot of fun painting him up, although I do want to get a new Blood Bowl team now!

Next up, I finished the Eldar Farseer and Warlocks. I haven't done much freehand work before, but I am pretty happy with how these have turned out. These will be flying back to Germany tomorrow.

Still Have more Eldar to finish, which I hope to get done over the next couple of weeks as my desk is pretty swamped at the moment!

On the Imperial Guard front, I swapped some space marines for some glory boys and a commissar. The Kasrkins need to be stripped and tidied up a little before i do anything with them.

The commissar was ready to start work on straight away, I have done the face, red trim/lining and gem on his belt so far. Still a lot more work to go but I'm happy with him so far.

And finally, I just wanted to put up pictures of an up and coming gamer and painter;

My Son's first ever painted mini's :o)

I know I am biased but for the first ever attempts of a 5 year old, I think they are great! and now that my daughter has seen his efforts she now wants a go too :oD

Next post, I hope to have another unit of Eldar finished and maybe a little bit of guard.

Quick update

Howdy,

I have nearly finished the warlocks, just need some neatening up and final highlights, then they are ready for a varnish and shipping.

The free hand was fun to do, and good practice for the harlequins that are waiting for me to start.

I received an email last week from the chap who bought my Human Blood Bowl team, asking if I wouldn't mind painting up a Mighty Zug for him on commission to match the team. He arrived late last week and I have done a little work on him between real life stuff and painting the Eldar.

The face is nearly finished and I am quite happy with it so far, I think he does look a little like De Niro in Frankenstein or Pete Postlethwaite maybe! The uniform and armour are only base coated at this stage, but he is coming along nicely.

On the Imperial Guard front, all is quiet as I haven't had much time for them. I need some more models but am lacking the funds for now, so have been thinking about getting rid of the odds and sods I have in my various bits boxes as well as some of the random models I have laying around. Once I have cleared my commissions I may even offer to paint some mini's in exchange for some more guard, but that is a few weeks off.

I still need to get another game in with my guard too, I have only played one game with this army and it was my first game playing 5th ed 40k!! Will have to see if i can drag Squig from Squig's Workshop over for a game or see if I can find some more local gamers to take on.

Anyway, real life beckons so I'll stop rambling and get off.

Progress

Hi folks,

The Eldar are coming along nicely, the farseer is finished and the warlocks should follow shortly,

Have got the base coat and first wash on the Screaming Banshees. I have started blacking out the weapons and gems, I will finish that and then get on with building up the bone colour on their suits.

I have also got the Dark Reapers and Warp Spiders primed and ready to start. For some reason the Matt primer i used came out shiny, so i will have to go over them with some watered down black or maybe some matt varnish.

Next up, I have been doing a little bit of work on my Imperial Guard in between Eldar sessions. I went back and changed the plasma colour on one of the older models from orange to turquoise as it seemed to fit a little better.

Next up are 6 guardsmen that I managed to finish, nothing too special, but it means I'm that little bit closer to complete ;)

Also put some base colours on the Ogryn.

On the base front, I just cannot justify the cost of buying the resin bases (to my wife anyway!), so I will need to make my own. The choice is to go with the slate bases or maybe go back to my original urban bases (way back when my guard were red!); what do you guys think? or do you have any better ideas?

And finally here are a couple of pics my objective markers and some pics or my Marbo.

I need to track down another aquila to finish the Objective markers off, it's the one from the Apocalypse vehicle command sprue, if you spot one let me know!
I still need to come up with a good name for the army, does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking along the lines of the Cadian 24th "Dire wolves", but if anyone has a good name feel free to post it.

Painting dark flesh my way

Just a quick post,

I had a request over on DakkaDakka on my tutorial for painting faces, they wanted to know if it was possible to use the technique to paint dark skin tones.

Answer = Yes!

Using the same technique from Painting Faces My Way to get dark skin tones and again using SWG to highlight. The pictures are a little dark and grainy im afraid, but they still show what you can acheive.

I love the way a face can really bring a model to life, as you can see below; although they are not fully painted the painted heads bring the WIP guardsmen to life.

Troops on Parade

Howdy folks,

Have been up to a few different bits and pieces since the last post, mostly trying to sort through the stupid amounts of bits and figures that I have stored in an even stupider amount of odd containers.

First up I rolled out the troops to see what I need to build up next and tally up what I actually have points wise to field:


So the count is at 152 models and the point count comes in at 163.

I have no vehicles in the army as yet, but will get some big guns to launch some long range destruction across the board before the combined fire of the infantry begins to rain down. I also need to sort out a couple of units with a bit more staying power than a normal guard unit that will take and hold an objective until the reinforcements can get there to back them up.

Will post my list in the comments for this post, if you have any ideas or suggestions, feel free to leave a post.

As you can see in the pics, most need finishing and I am still not sure what I am going to do about basing them; I was going to buy a load of snazzy bases from Secret Weapon, Dark Art or Dragon Forge but just can't fund it. They are playable at least and legal, so I will try and get a game in at some point over the next couple of weeks.

Next up, I have had some Eldar to do for a commission job. I was sent the Farseer and Warlocks, Harlequins, Banshees, Reapers and Warp Spider boxes.

Started on these and I am hoping to have these done over the next week or two, then on to the next box :)

The Ogres came out of the dip and are ready to be primed and repainted once I have some time.


Finally, after seeing all my guard lined up and having a flick through the guard codex, I decided to make a Nork Deddog to help protect my commanders.
A little rough, but I quite like him. I slimmed him down a fair bit by shaving down his gut and love handles so he is a bit more trim (shame I can't do that in real life!). Not perfect but I will keep working on im until I can make something better.

Ogre Stew

Decided that my Ogres need to take a dip to strip them of paint so I can start over again.

I had hoped spraying over them would save me some time, but my airbrush had a bit of a hissy and they didn't turn out as I hoped. They came out with a rough texture that seeped out the colours to spread into areas I didn't want the paint going to.

So the trusted dettol has been called in to strip them down.

The Ogre on the left was my test (skin tone only), which came out really smooth but the one on the right is a bit sketchy. I will leave them to soak over night in the Dettol and give them a good scrub in the morning.

Painting wise, I finished up the Captain of the Empireand made a start on Finari. Happy with the captain, but Finari is a little rough and may go for a dip too if im still not happy with her after a little more work.

Just a quick update

Hi folks,

Not had much time for painting of late, but as my current contract is about to expire at work i will have lots of time to get on with it from next friday!!

I have almost finished the Goblins, Orcs and Femirs; which will be winging their way back on Monday if all goes well this weekend.

The pictures are a bit dark, but i will get some new ones taken tomorrow afternoon and with a camera that is actually charged so i don't have to rush them!

I have also started to repaint my Ogre kingdoms army, going for more human flesh tones this time around. Once painted up, they will likely go up on EBAY to help fund my return to full time education.

Next up, I have been playing alot of Pathfinder games with an amazing GM called Crispy over the last few months, and have of course needed some miniatures to act as my avatars in the games!

This was to be Baal's (my Barbarian from a previous post) replacement mini, but on his first trip out in place of the Big Boris model, he went and died! so painting was aborted for now! until his cousin Biil comes out of hiding maybe :)

Next is my new main charater, Darius the fool. He is a courtly fool in training and has joined the pathfinder society to witness and be part of great adventures so that he will have stories and tales to entertain and thrill his honoured hosts of the future! as long as he can remember to get out of the way of the fighting! still in progress but will be finished soon.

Last up is Damiel the alchemist pregen, who sometimes acompanies us when we are a player short :) was just a nice model and is more fun to use than a random orc warrior that was spare from the GM's figure box! Needs a little more work and basing.

No work on my guard to report, i want to get the greenies finished and away, and get the Ogres up to scratch as soon as possible. More painting should hopefully mean more posts! but i always say that!

Heroquest part deux and Blood Bowl Team to go

I also got some more Reaper Miniatures through which i will be painting on breaks from the greenies above :)

On to some sad news, i am selling off my blood bowl human team to try and re-coup some of the cost of moving house and decorating that have all but melted my poor credit card!

Painting faces my way

Ok, I am sick of painting blue so I thought I would take a break.

Here is a rough tutorial on how I paint faces using only Tallarn Flesh and Space Wolf Grey.

First, I take the head and clean the mould lines using the edge of a hobby knife with a brand new blade.

Next I undercoat the head in Black.

Now paint the flesh areas with Tallarn Flesh mixed with a little water. This will take 2 coats if you don’t use too much water, to get a solid but smooth colour. I left the recesses on the head with only one coat, so the eyes and around the jaw have a slight shadow to them from the black undercoat coming through.

Now i mix the TF with Space Wolf Grey at about 4:1. I leave the recesses with the base coat and use this mix on the exposed areas, such as the forehead, cheeks ears, jaw and chin.

Nest i add some more SWG to my mix, about 3:1 now. At this stage i am looking at adding highlights to the prominently raised areas on the face, such as the brow, nose, ear, chin, around the mouth and the outer edge of the jaw.

The final highlights are done pretty much by feel alone, but first it is roughly 2:1 TF:SWG to pick out the raised areas around the eyes, nose and mouth.

The last highlight is approx. 1:1 and is used on the tip of each brow, the tip of the cheeks and the tip of the nose.

After the last step I used a fine brush to paint his eye sockets black, followed by bleached bone on the actual eye but being careful to leave a black outer rim for definition. Then it was just a case of adding a couple of dots for pupils and painting the teeth BB too.

Using the SWG really works well with my army as they have the blue and grey armour, but the technique really works well with nearly any other scheme.

No doubt there are other much better tutorials out there, but this is how i do my faces, so why not give it a try and see how it works out for you?

If like me when i first started, you struggle as to where you need or don’t need to put your highlights, i recommend taking a look on GW's site and their 'Eavy metalpainting faces guide (You need to be logged in to see the article) or having a flick through some of the articles on CMON.

Anyway, i need to get back to painting lots of blue before A Game of Thrones comes on.

Any C and C on the tutorial would be greatly appreciated, and who knows maybe i will do more or not depending on the feedback ;o)

Sly Marbo and his merry men

Decided on which army to go ahead with :)

Have also found my new bestest ever highlighting colour too whilst I was painting up my Sly conversion; Space wolf grey! Doesn’t drain the colour like white or bleached bone and is easy to work with for good looking results :)

At the minute, I am painting the base blue on all the chaps you can see in the picture. Very boring and slow going but it needs t be done. They were all sprayed with my airbrush for the grey when I first got it, using the same colours as by hand; I work from codex grey up to fortress grey. The blue starts with fenris grey and goes up through shadow grey to space wolf grey.

I did mean to put some tutorials up, if anyone is interested let me know and I’ll see what I can knock together :)

Anyway, back to the grind!

Good news for Moritz, I have pretty much finished the Heroquest lot.

Just a few touches here and there but they should be winging their way back shortly :)

With them done, I need to decide whether i will do my Guard or maybe even redo my Ogres...

New post, new location

Hi folks,

Sorry about the lack of bloggage, but it has been a pretty hectic couple of months. Work has gone crazy busy, and I have also moved house and had various other dramas along the way as usual :)

But (touch wood) I now have my own little hobby room with pretty good lighting, space for all my gubbins and my main PC within immediate blogging distance!

Wouldn't hold your breath on a torrent of blogging from here out, but i should be able to post alot more frequently as everything I need is in a single room!

Painting wise, there has been progress! I have actually put paint to minis!

The Heroquest stuff is all done except the gargoyle, which i have been promising Moritz would be done for the last few months! He is 50% complete, and i will do my best to get him done this week, pics posted and shipped as soon as i am done!

Here are a few pics of the rest of the minis he sent:

On some personal mini stuff, here are a couple of minis that have been finished for me and my wife. We have just started playing pathfinder after finding an awesome couple that happen to be DM's and massive pathfinder fans.

First up is Baal "Giant's Blood", my Barbarian ex pit fighter. Big Borris from Heresy Miniatures, with a few gubbins from my bitsbox to make him WYSIWYG, not really needed for RPG but years of playing GW games meant i had to!

Next we have Amarylis, my wife's Half-elf druid and her animal companion Humpy (wow, how imaginative!). Autumn Bronzeleaf by Reaper minis, a really nice model with lots of detail which was a real pleasure to paint. Humpy was from eBay, and not so nice to paint, but will do for now.

Next up is a model i am planning to use as a half-ork ranger named Bronn. Also from Heresy, Ebric the Doomed.

And finally, here is my new toy!

Build up!

Hi folks,

Sorry it has been a while, I have no idea where that time went!

Not a massive amount of progress in the last couple of months, but I have gotten through some of the models sat on my painting desk.

First up, I have finished Drogo my halfling barbarian for the D&D campaign I have been playing in.

I also put the final touches on my wife's Escher gang for Necromunda!! these have only taken 5 or 6 years to complete! lol. Just have to finishing basing a few then varnish and I'm done with the pink ladies for good :)

Have also been touching up the random Reaper models sitting on my desk, the fighter is getting there but the rat has just had base colour and washes so far.

On the Imperial Guard front, I finished 5 more grunts (forgot to take pics) and converted up a "counts as" Sly Marbo. As you can see he has only had a couple of case colours put on at the moment but I am really happy with how he looks. Oh and the weird grey box is his demo charge :) any C&C is appreciated.

And finally I have been cracking on with the Heroquest stuff from the last post, skeletons need their wood shafts touching up and then they are done, the mummies are finished, the elf is complete, the barbarian is nearly done, zombies are close to complete, chaos warriors will be started tonight and the wizard, dwarf and sorceror will be finished over the next couple of nights.

That just leaves the big gargoyle, which I am still not sure how I am going to do him yet, but should be finished along with everything else by next weekend or maybe the following if anything pops up in "Real Life" :)

So all going well I should be posting again soon with updates or all going well the completed Heroquest and Necromunda gang!

Going old school

Hi folks,

Just a quick update on what i have been up to over the last few weeks, which to be honest isn't much :(

Have started a new commission on some of my favourite ever miniatures from the Heroquest box set!

Not a great deal done so far but until i received them i had forgotten how great that game was! I will have to get my copy back off of my younger brother :)

I have been doing some work on my Imperial guard too, trying to get a usable force up and running so i can take on some Orks a friend of mine.

Have to apologise for the really poor pics, the lighting here is a nightmare! I struggle to paint as it is so poor and the pictures fare little better :( but i will be relocating again in a few months so hopefully i can find a good painting spot in the new house!

Will try and get some more updates and better pictures up soon!

Once again I have been away for a while, but am back and with a new hobby :)

I decided a few weeks ago that I would like to play D&D and after a bit of searching around I came across East Midland Roleplayers Gaming Group.

After posting that I am completely new to D&D and in fact ALL role-play games, I soon found a game that was just starting up being run by Len (who also happens to be the main man for EMRGG). I was told I would need a Halfling or a Gnome character so I went for a Halfling Barbarian called Drogo Toe-Chomper (A nod to GRRM).

My first session I really enjoyed, the second even more and now as I wait for the 3rd, I find that I am becoming more than a little addicted to D&D!

Now coming from a miniature gaming background I obviously need a model to act as my avatar :) the options were pretty slim since there is only one company that I could find with a Halfling Barbarian - Heresy Miniatures Ghonad the barbarian :)

I ordered all three of the Halfling miniatures available at the time Ghonad, Van Halfling and Norko. I managed to get Drogo painted up in time for the first session (well 90% done and no basing) and the other two were well on the way.

Unfortunately my wife thought it would be a great idea to throw the bubble wrap they were wrapped up in away!! I wasn't happy!

So I had to re-order the minis but now they come as a set of 4 and I now have "Buttercup, bringer of the Apocalypse" too :)

So at the moment I am painting up the Halflings and some other D&Desque figures I randomly had floating around in a couple of my figure boxes :)

The current paint que, Drogo/Ghonad is at the front :) some Reaper Minis(i think) , Limited edition Necromancer, IG Senior Officer/Creed stand in and a test model for my Ogres.

As you can see in the picture, I have also been getting on with my Imperial Guard, painted up a couple more troops and have made a start on the Senior Officer/Creed count as. I have also started an Ogre test model (also in the picture), as I am thinking of stripping down and repainting all 3.5-4k of my Ogre Kingdom Army.

Too dark to take any good pictures at the moment, but I will try and get some more pics of everything tomorrow.

Chaos Dwarf team done.

Finished the Chaos Dwarf team i have been doing, and am now ready to be getting on with the lizards.

These really were some gorgeous models and a real pleasure to paint.

Not much to say, so will leave this post (my 50th! wow!) short and sweet so i can get on with the next team :O)

Up and painting again!

Finally have Internet sorted after a nightmare house move!

I have fallen behind in my painting however :O(

The chaos Dwarfs are well on the way to being finished though. The Hob-goblins are all finished, 3 Dwarf players are waiting to be finished off and one of the 2 centaur torsos just needs finishing off.

All that remains then is the legs for the centaurs and the Minotaur, so I am hoping to get theses finished over the next couple of weeks and then devote all my spare time to getting the lizzardman team finished.

Then get on with my guard.

And my Ogres.

And my Necromunda.

And my Vampire counts.

And my Empire.

And my... Well you get the point ;O)

Have been lost in real life boring stuff and not had much of a chance to get any pics taken.

Hob goblins are nearly done for the chaos dwarf team i am working on and i will be cracking on with them and the rest after i move house next week.

The lizards are giving me a real headache trying to get them to look right, and have been stripped and re-painted a couple of times already. I am going to paint up a couple of different scheme to see if i can find something that works better.

I have a tonne of packing and moving to do, and it will take a few weeks to get internet up and running in the new house, but once it is i should hopefully have plenty of pics to post for you all.

Sorry for the boring all text in this post, i'm back off to do packing and will hopefully speak to y'all soon!

Started my Blood Bowl Commissions

Have been busy in real life the last couple of weeks but have managed to finish blacking out the rest the lizardmen team's metal sections and will start on the skin this weekend.

I have finished a hobgoblin and 80% of a dwarf player for the chaos dwarfs

Still have a couple of bits to tidy up on them, but i am really happy with the look and scheme.

I will try and get some more done on both teams this weekend and will try and post a bit more often, real life permitting.

Will keep this post short and sweet by finishing here.
