Tickets and Entry

If you are over 12 years of age, to get through the gate your name needs to be on the “Attendee List” that was created when you bought your ticket through Brown Paper Tickets. If you are 12 or under you can get in with your parents. Note that the customer service people at Brown Paper Tickets sometimes give out the wrong information. Your name MUST be linked to your ticket through Brown Paper Tickets and your government issued ID must match that name or you will not be allowed in the gate!

Remember, the paper ticket doesn’t get you in, your name and government issued photo ID have to match the list, like a guest list. Also, your art ticket is waiting for you at the gate, along with a fancy wristband!

Since you will all be carpooling, note that everyone in your vehicle needs to have a ticket and be on the list. If anyone in your vehicle does not have a ticket but is intending to get in you will all be sent home. Also, if anyone is caught sneaking into the event and they came with you, you’re all kicked out. ASS is watching.

Your vehicle will be searched. We’re looking for people without tickets and nasty moopy stuff like feather boas. These searches will be by gate volunteers, not police or authorities.

Early Entry

Wednesday early entry will be regulated. If you are registered in the volunteer database for a shift ON ANY DAY or you are an Ignition member you will be granted Wednesday early entry. Preregistered theme camps will be allowed to give four individuals early entry.

Parking

Upon arrival to Apogaea, vehicles will be allowed to unload gear at your camp (remember to stay on the road!!!). After you’ve unloaded, vehicles must be taken to the indicated parking area by one person in your group (cuz you all carpooled). A shuttle will be transporting people from the parking area this year. Please limit the amount of people and gear on the shuttle.

Food Drive

Apogaea will be conducting a non-perishable food drive at the event this year. We are soliciting donations of canned food (on the way in) or extra food (on the way out) for donation to a Bailey area food bank. We believe this would be a very effective way for Apogaea and its community to give back to the local area that has allowed us to hold our event for many years.  As we attempt to grow the event, the goodwill of the community will be an increasingly important factor.

Ice Sales

The days for ice sales have changed this year due to the addition of Wednesday. The information in the Survival guide is incorrect: Ice sales are now on Thursday & Sat (no longer Friday) noon until it is gone. $2 per bag.

Retreat Recap

President CANO reviewed the Board and Ignition retreat. It was an awesome, spiritual team building experience. Ignition members reviewed responsibilities of the event, BAMF conducted a 2 hour training and covered the emergency evacuation plan, Rangers gave a training and gave us tools to calm situations down, the lasagna was delicious, and everybody walked on hot coals.

Nate Harris and Sparky were ratified as new DPW Dics of the day and Steve Merager was ratified as a new Treasurer Assistant.

Center Camp

There was discussion about the Center Camp Café and whether to make a lead position for the person running the café. The board decided that, for now, the café should remain a community-driven effort. To find out more about what’s going on at Center Camp this year, be sure to check out Amelia’s blog post.

Sound Policy

Kingpin and Michael presented this year’s sound policy. They are focusing on placement more than rules so that we can have loud areas and quiet areas at the event. There are two important changes this year:

1. Subwoofers must be placed on an above ground platform to control the spread of sound.
2. Large sound camps must bring a microphone and show that it works so it can be used as part of an emergency notification system.

This year we have 4 large sound camps, 8 medium sound camps, and 20 small unregulated camps that include some amount of sound.

Work Weekend

Work weekend review – Ignition and BAMF members should RSVP for work weekend individually, for theme camps they RSVP together as a group. The food budget for work weekend was discussed. Bobalicious is in charge of the big meal and he will keep costs at a minimum. There was discussion of how many people are allowed to come for work weekend. Everybody who comes must have a specific reason why they need to be there.

Early entry

Wednesday early entry will be regulated. If you are registered in the volunteer database for a shift ON ANY DAY or you are an Ignition member you will automatically be granted Wednesday early entry. Preregistered theme camps were allowed to request early entry for up to four members of their team.

Charitable donations

Apogaea donated $1000 to the Bailey Fire Department. We really want to keep those guys happy.

Detailed pre-event items

Road work – Contracts are in place and road work has been started.

Schwag – There will be lots of cool schwag for volunteers this year, including carabiners, stickers, and stainless steel coffee mugs. The schwag proposal was approved as presented.

Map – There will be a detailed map available at the gate.

Firewood/propane – there is a $1000 budget for firewood and propane.

Board member on-duty shifts – there will be a board member on duty at all times during the event (including overnight shifts). There will also be a board member at the gate at all times during entry to handle any ticket misunderstandings. Please don’t be difficult, but if you have a problem know that a board member will be available.

Security guards – there will be a security guard at the gate from sunset to 9 AM. The board voted to give the security guards a small raise.

ICS training video – slide presentation. Cyn is producing a video with important emergency training information. Eric will be community liaison in case of an emergency situation. (ICS lead role). Your BAMF team is prepared!

Rental Vehicles – There will be a few official Apo vehicles driving around at the event

1. Parking Shuttle – Important paring information here! When you arrive at Apo you will be able to drive in close to your camp to unload (BUT YOU MUST STAY ON THE ROAD). After you unload your vehicle, one member of your group will drive to the parking lot. There will be a shuttle (mini van) driving between the parking lot and the gate to bring you back in.
2. Honey Badger (the BAMF van). Your medical and fire team needs to be able to get around. ‘Nuff said.
3. Pickup trucks for Rangers.

Shade structures – The board took an inventory of Apo’s shade structures which will be used for gate, greeters, info booth, and fire convergence. BAMF bought their own shade structure for this year

Financials

There were lots of details about the budget. Art dozed off. There is an idea to create a finance committee for next year to provide more financial oversight. This discussion was tabled until after the event.

Apogaea will produce an after burn report detailing all the stuff we bought this year, what all the departments did, where the money went, etc. Art volunteered to assemble this information and get it to you after the event. You’re welcome.

The next board meeting will be July 8th in Denver. Matt will verify with Meg that the Fusion Factory is available.

The Center Camp Kickstarter may have hit its original goal, which covers essentials such as lights and construction materials, but that original goal ultimately only pays for a portion of what we need to transform the space into something genuinely useful. We’re currently at about $1,500 pledged (thank you so much to everyone who has contributed!) But we need to hit $2,000 to have  things like proper seating in place – things you in the community has specifically told us you want to see! So, if you haven’t yet, pledge to our fundraiser soon (We only have about a week left!)

Leave your mark

This year will be the first that we feature “the fence.” The Black Rock City Cafe has a fence – a wall of murals – but the work displayed is limited to that of artists selected by the Burning Man LLC.

Instead of only allowing a select few artists create our fence, we invite anybody and everybody wanting to add their special touches to the series of four triangular, wedge shaped murals. The end result should be a unique fingerprint of this year’s specific community.

Be sure to bring paint, markers, and other non-moopy materials to decorate the fence with!

Bring your art

Center Camp has added new walls to accommodate hanging art pieces. Sculptures, both large and small, are also always welcome. We don’t care if you think that you suck as an artist, or you’re an ego-driven maniac.

Center Camp Build Blog: Howdy, Everyone!

The Center Camp fundraiser may still be going on, but that doesn’t mean we can’t burn borrowed money as quickly as possible!

Prologue

Very little sleep. This won’t be pretty, and it may not make a whole of of sense.

Chapter 1

This last weekend, we started making purchases using Amelia’s emergency cash-stash. (Only 28 days until Apogaea! Panic!) We’re pretty confident that with the help of burners like you, the funding for Center Camp will come together without issue.

Anyway, last weekend, right. It went a little something like this…

First, Amelia and build team member Liese Lemay traveled from Denver to Boulder.

In Boulder, we were able to secure about 10 gallons of mis-tinted paint for free from the very nice folks at Diamond Vogel. From there, we went to the Phoenix Asylum to meet Jasmine and get our first look at the new stage and the whiteboard (that will become the Center Camp sign.) In short: that whiteboard is gigantic. Neither of the two pieces fit in our tuck. But, don’t worry. We’ll be back.

The next stop was the Home Depot in Fort Collins, where we picked up all the plywood and lumber that we should need for Center Camp. It was a lot. The cart-thing was hard to push. >_>’

OMG! Look you guyz! Stuffz!

29 sheets of plywood and some assorted 2x4s later, we imagined the truck would be pretty full up with these just items. So, we decided to blow that Popsicle…. stand. (What did you think we were going to say?)

From that point on, it was a race against the impending rain clouds. A very slow race… we didn’t want to lose the load. Also, people don’t like the slow truck.

Oh, also, there was coffee. We aren’t good at winning races. :\

Super moon and storm clouds rise ominously.

We got to the fabrication shop in Eaton just in time to drop our load off in the rain and hail. Don’t worry though, it’s all protected and waiting to be cut up. Then, we’ll put it back together in odd ways! It’s downright deviant and masochistic, really.

Aside

We’re also working on getting all of our internet ordering completed. We have some outdoor flood lights that already arrived. And, the tankless, propane hot water heater is on it’s way!

In the interest of furthering this policy, Apogaea is offering a “bounty” on scalpers. Any person who can prove to the satisfaction of the Apogaea Board of Directors that another individual has sold, or offered to sell, a ticket to our event for more than face value will receive the right to purchase the scalper’s cancelled ticket(s) at face value from Apogaea if the Board decides to cancel the ticket (which it will normally do). Satisfactory proof will generally mean emails, photographs, or recordings of some kind that evidence the identity of the individual selling the ticket as well as the terms and conditions of the proposed sale.

Scalpers beware – every potential customer is a snitch waiting to turn you in and obtain their ticket at face value.

While we are discussing the subject of ticket sales, please remember that a physical ticket does not guarantee you entry into the event. Your right of entry is evidenced by BOTH your physical ticket and the presence of your name on our list of participants which will be kept at the gate. You will be required to show a government issued photo ID that matches your name at the gate. If your ID does not match a name on the list of participants YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE EVENT. If you have purchased a ticket from another community member: (a) they need to contact Brown Paper Tickets and have your name substituted for their name on the list of ticketed attendees; or (b) they need to come to the gate with you and their own valid ID.

There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to these rules. You can beg, scream, cry, and plead BUT IT WILL DO YOU NO GOOD AND WE WILL LIKELY LAUGH AT YOU.

As most of you have noticed, Colorado has been a bit on the dry side recently, and has a very low snowpack. This means low embodied moisture in our vegetation, which creates dangerous fire conditions. All of this means that summer Burn Bans are a very real possibility. Here is what you need to do to stay up-to-date as we get closer to our event.

Register Your Fire

If you are bringing a “Fire Device”, such as a burn barrel, flaming sculpture, propane poofer, jetpack, or “anything flaming that isn’t a cookstove or fire performance gear (poi/staff)”, it must be PRE-REGISTERED along with art projects and theme camps! If you are already making a theme camp or art registration, make sure you add details about your FIRE THINGS to the form. If you are just bringing a burn barrel but are not registering a theme camp, then please register your device on it’s own.

WHY? The jurisdiction and land owner trust us to manage our fire safety in part because we commit to knowing what is going on at all times on the property. By registering, I know what is on fire where, and can answer any questions asked of us by the local jurisdictions or land owner. Also, if you register, I have your contact information and will give you regular updates on burn ban status, and advice on our rules for burn barrels and other fire devices to make sure they are both safe and awesome.

Burn Bans

There are three levels of burn ban that you should be aware of. These levels are set by Apogaea, and reflect our own needs, the needs of the land owner, and the needs of the local fire authority, all of whom we are in constant communication with. Burn ban status can change at any time, even partway through the event! As of today (4/7) there is No Burn Ban, but that can and will change on a weekly basis as we approach June.

• NO BURN BAN- This is our default state. Note that even with no burn ban, some things are still not allowed:
  • NO in-ground fires
  • NO tiki torches or candles
  • NO open-top burn barrels
  • NO unregistered structure burns
  • YES approved burn barrels and fire devices
  • YES approved art burns
  • YES fire performances
• LEVEL 1 BAN – “PARTIAL BAN” – This level of ban restricts some of our fire use, but allows others:
• NO wood burning fires (including burn barrels)
• NO art burns
• NO open fires
• YES propane fire devices in approved locations
• YES fire performances in specific approved locations
• LEVEL 2 BAN – “FULL BAN” – A full ban indicates serious fire danger!
• NO fires
• NO fire performances
• NO smoking outside of enclosed spaces
• YES propane cookstoves if fully protected and elevated

What Should I DO?

3. Fire Performers (poi, staff, hoop, etc.) – Check in with Fire Convergence when you arrive – they will know the current status for fire performance, and if special zones have been setup due to fire danger. (for more info. contact Enthusi Adam)
4. Plan on a possible burn ban:
1. Extra dry and warm clothing
2. Consider building propane inserts for burn barrels or stoves
3. Tons of sweet blinky LED powered things to light up the night
5. Stay in touch – further updates will come as we approach the event.
6. Stay awesome – burn bans are a reality for Apogaea, but there is no reason that should slow us down!
