Jasmine Rodgers is shocked to find out her husband, Reginald, of 10 years is leaving her for another woman. In DO UNTO OTHERS by Marcia Wynn, we get a chance to also hear from the cheater. Reginald feels as though his wife is not attentive to his needs. After having two children and running a non-profit organization, Jasmine has put her focus on all but Reginald. Reginald does not talk to Jasmine about their problems: he allows her to go on thinking they are the happiest couple alive. Instead he confides in Yvette about his marital problems. Well, this is when the emotional affair begins. And this only leads to a sexual affair months later. Jasmine has to figure out how to pick up the pieces and move on with her life…without Reginald.

Jasmine’s best friend, Giana, also appears to be in a loving marriage. But on the inside she feels as though her husband, Patrick, has been cheating on her for years. They married when she was young and now more than 10 years later, she is no longer the young hot girl he married. Is Patrick really looking for the next hot thing? Or is it all in Giana’s mind? On top of her worry about Patrick she is faced to deal with some devastating news.

Wynn manages to give the prospective of both the husband and the wife. I enjoyed hearing both sides to each story. It seemed to be a self-help and a novel tied in one. This storyline was written in a narrative format and had too much telling vs. showing. It really could have been a short story. Wynn appears to have great knowledge when it comes to relationships. It is a possible good book for those marriages that may be on the brink of separation.

A former model, commercial actress, and television news reporter, Marissa self-published her first book in 2000, and signed her first book deal in 2001. Originally from Los Angeles, she now lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her family and is also trying her hand at playwriting, adapting May December Souls into a stage play.
On the ‘Net With Author Pynk is a post from: APOOO

Greetings Pynk and welcome to APOOO.

In 140 words or less, tell readers why Sexaholics would make a great addition to our personal library.
Sexaholics is a voyeuristic view into the lives of four women who live for the ultimate high, and to them, that high is sex. I wanted to show what it’s like to have an uncontrollable sex drive, and what it would be like to be powerless over lust, engaging in riskier and riskier acts to the point that consequences don’t matter, including one’s job, family, and even their own life. Sexaholics would make a great addition to the personal library of those who first of all enjoy erotica, and secondly to the library of those who are open-minded and curious about what it would be like to experience a dramatic detox from any drug, but in particular, the three letter drug, S-E-X.

How did you come up with the plot for Sexaholics?
The term sexaholic was talked about quite a bit in 2002 when Eric Benet admitted he checked himself into a sex addiction clinic. Back then I registered the title Sexaholics with the Writer’s Guild, and decided I wanted to explore the concept of addiction as it relates to sex – specifically I wanted to focus on your average single women, as opposed the the people we usually hear about, well-known, married men.

Are you working on another book and, if so, can you share a brief summary with us?
I’ve just completed Sixty-Nine, the story of three women who are conservative, sexually repressed best friends, born in 1969 and who are about to turn the big 4-0. On New Year’s Eve, they vow to go beyond their boundaries and push the limits, vowing to live their sexy dreams. Sixty-Nine comes out in March 2011.

Thus far, what has been your favorite 2010 moment ?
My favorite moment was when all of my kids, grandkids, and I took an amazing family portrait together. Priceless!

Which living person do you most admire?
President Obama

What are your most overused words or phrases?
“I know that’s right.”

If you could meet any historical character, who would it be and what would you say to him or her?
Shirley Chisholm – I’d thank her allowing me to live my teen years hearing about a strong, smart, brave black woman who was the first in so many ways, mainly the first African American to run for President. She made me proud to be a black female. If she could only see our President now!

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Lookie loos – especially on the freeway

What is your most surprising talent or interest – the one that makes people say “I didn’t know you (did/liked/knew)…”?
I’m a pool shark

What’s one song that people would be surprised to know is on your IPod (or in your music collection)?
Biggie Smalls – Hypnotize (I know every single word)

Name five things that make your world go round.
God.
People.
Love.
Laughter.
Books.
Caramel Frappuccinos (oh sorry, 5)

Thanks Pynk for taking time out of your schedule to join APOOO.

Paisley, a former video vixen, is the owner of The Playground, an erotic fitness studio. She had looks, men and a house to die for. The only thing missing was the only man that she loved, Warren Cobb. Warren is the hottest gospel singer in town who was married to Bishop Julian Arnold’s niece, Kolette. Bishop Arnold had one of the biggest congregations and he would do anything to remain in good grace. All hell breaks loose when Paisley and Warren are nearly killed in a car accident. Say It Ain’t So tells what happens when their paths cross.

Hunt has put together a fun story. There are a lot of very colorful and interesting characters that are trying to figure out what type of relationship Paisley and Warren have. I laughed and shook my head as I turned each page. Though I figured out Paisley’s mystery, I continued to read to see how Hunt would conclude the story.

Author: Sonya Visor
Apooo: 4.5

Heading: I Won’t Be Silent Anymore

Are you the one sitting in the pew on Sunday morning with your best face on, a smile that never reaches your eyes, and dressed in the best money can buy? Yet you are hurting and empty, and the life that has truly become yours remains hidden under all that can be seen on the outside while you suffer behind the mask you put on before you leave the house so no one can see how much you are hurting. Or the shambles your life has become because of the past that you have never come to terms with. However, you know that the time has come for you to take off the mask that you have kept in place as a mechanism to keep out anymore hurt, only you operate in the very hurt and dysfunction that caused you to wear a mask in the first place. In Author Sonya Visor’s novel, Who I’ve Become is NOT Who I Am, she shares with readers her road to deliverance to become the woman God has called her to be.

Author Visor tells her story of molestation that she and her sister endured at the hands of relatives, both opting to keep quiet so no one would get into trouble; however, their silence protected the very persons who violated them. These acts took away their innocence and would change their lives for years to come. The pain and dysfunction that became her life caused her to put on a mask so that no one would know the hurt, guilt, shame and hopelessness these acts caused to live in her spirit, altering who she was and keeping her from becoming who God called her to be.

Who I’ve Become is NOT Who I Am is a book that will help anyone on their journey to becoming whole in God by first finding or acknowledging the root of the problem. How important is it to talk about the problem; friends and relatives can be a help, but sharing with God, the One Who created us and knows all and can fix all.

I enjoyed this book and received a true blessing from its contents because I have come to understand that although Author Visor talks about her experience and her journey to becoming who God has called her to be, it is not just the subject matter she has shared. The book is written in such a way that I truly understand that it addresses whatever the root problem may be so that we can go to God, fasting, praying and believing that He will meet us where we are and bring about the deliverance that is needed in our lives so that we can find ourselves in the place He will have us to be. We must remove the masks that we hide behind and lie bare before our Lord and allow Him to heal us and set us free. I recommend this book to any and everyone desiring to remove the mask and really live the life they have been called to live.

Marilyn Marie is desperate to break away from Nikki Desmond, the rich spoiled rotten character she played on the hit 1990s teen sitcom All About Nikki.
All About Marilyn by Shawn James is a post from: APOOO

When I requested to review All About Marilyn, some how I overlooked the word screenplay. Imagine my surprise when I opened the package and flipped through the book, as I do with all books when I first receive them. The last time I read anything that came close to this format was written by Shakespeare and called a play. However, Shawn James begins the screenplay with a little background information or what he called “Screenplay Basics.” Did I really need that information to enjoy what I was reading? No!

Marilyn Marie, at one point in her younger years, was a big time actress on a sitcom called All About Nikki. As with most child stars, she has to prove herself later on in order to get a part that is nothing like the character she used to play on television. One day while she was on a production set, her friend had written, a major incident occurs, triggering the change she had been seeking. Marilyn was leaving behind her life as Nikki Desmond, but would Nikki Desmond continue to be a part of her life forever? Will she be nothing but another washed-up actresses?

Mr. James brought drama. I can see how it would be the turning point in movie. If All About Marilyn was written in novel form I could see it then also. I did not expect the ending or any of it for that matter. But I did enjoy what I read. I am not sure if this is a new literary genre, but I would read more. I recommend readers of plays and those looking for a new type of reading experience to give this book a try.

I received this screenplay for review purposes from the author.

Spring awakens my senses; I love the smell of fresh flowers in the air. I am inspired by the splashes of color that Mother Nature amuses us with. I enjoy the crisp air upon my skin.
Springing Forward by Rambling Raven is a post from: APOOO

Springing Forward by Rambling Raven

The only thing I dislike about the coming spring season is the time change. I don’t sleep as I should to begin with, so taking an hour away can be very difficult to adjust to in the beginning. However, spring is the time when we emerge from our winter hibernation. The cold weather begins to turn mild and the Earth starts to come alive. Trees start to bloom, birds begin chirping, grass begins to grow and flowers start to bloom. It is also the time in which I seem to come alive as well.

Winter is a tough season for me due to the cold, the snow and the lack of sunshine. The Earth seems dead and barren. The winter skies are mostly gray and black. It takes effort for me to get out and do things in the winter. However, spring brings a renewed sense of self. I can get out and walk about and enjoy some sun. I can start to do things I associate with better weather. I can begin cleaning out and putting away all the old winter stuff. I can start a new exercise routine that incorporates outdoor activities. And I can begin to expand my diet with fresh fruits and vegetables by visiting local farmers’ markets.

Spring awakens my senses; I love the smell of fresh flowers in the air. I am inspired by the splashes of color that Mother Nature amuses us with. I enjoy the crisp air upon my skin. The new season allows me to shed some of those dreary winter clothes in exchange for lighter, brighter ones. My creativity comes to life as well. There is nothing more inspiring than being able to take my journal out to sit and write as the world passes me by. I even like the rain that come and goes throughout this season. The smell of fresh rain is intoxicating as are the mini-rainbows it leaves behind.

I must admit that after I get adjusted to the time change spring has some of the best nights for sleeping. I open all my bedroom windows a few inches to take in the night air and snuggle underneath the covers. The air seems to cleanse the room of all its winter heat. And there is nothing more melodic than being serenaded by the sound of birds in the tree outside my bedroom window.

Springing forward is a welcoming part of the year for me. It indicates the end of one season and the beginning of another. It indicates the continual cycle of life. It is a chance of renewal, a chance to appreciate the many wonders of nature as it beings to unfold before our very eyes.

In Jason McCammon’s The Ancient Lands: Warrior Quest: Search for the Ifa Scepter, Bomani wants to be chosen as the next king, but his brother, Mongo, is the one praised by everyone. When another boy in the kingdom of Ufalme challenges Bomani, he sees this as the opportunity to prove to his father that he should be the next king. In order to save the kingdom, Bomani needs to retrieve the Ifa Scepter. At the beginning of his journey, Bomani meets Farra, a young sorcerer, and her wolf, Pupa. Together on this mission they are tested in ways that are so mentally and physically strenuous, that even an adult would give up and return home as a failure. How much will Bomani and Farra endure before they return home? Will they, as children, be able to complete this mission?

While reading The Ancient Lands: Warrior Quest: Search for the Ifa Scepter I wished I was watching a movie instead of reading it. The description of the different people, creatures, and lands that Bomani and Farra came in contact with were very interesting. When I came to the end I wanted more; I wanted to go on another adventure with these characters. Not only did McCammon pen a story that would hold the young mind captivated, he also incorporated underlying messages of will, determination, friendship, and most importantly self-belief. I recommend The Ancient Lands: Warrior Quest: Search for the Ifa Scepter to pre-teens and older, even adults.

Do You Wanna Be Made Whole is about a pastor who mentors three men through thier life crises. It explores the themes of forgiveness, male relationships and mentoring.
Do You Wanna Be Made Whole by Bernard Boulton is a post from: APOOO

Pastor James Maxwell understands firsthand what it is to lose his family due to his own personal actions, and he also knows how important it is to find himself complete in the God he serves. In Author Bernard Boulton’s, Do You Wanna Be Made Whole, Pastor Maxwell shares the lessons God taught him because of past mistakes.

Under the pastoral tutelage of Pastor Maxwell, three young men grew from childhood to manhood together and found direction in life in different ways. However, Michael, Adam and Theo would find their way back to the ministry and teaching of the man who was instrumental in providing the male role model they all needed and the guidance to become the men that God had called them to be.

Michael suffered a tragedy that he never took the time to come to grips with, and hid a secret that threatened to overtake his life; Adam’s womanizing ways cost him a job he loved and Theo struggled with his wife’s infidelity and could not find it in his heart to forgive her and work on repairing their marriage. These three young men who grew up together would learn how valuable their longtime friendship would be at such a crucial time in each of their lives with the help of Pastor Maxwell.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Pastor Maxwell’s ministry consisted of helping men from all walks of life through a program he started at his church to help them identify the root of their problem and work on allowing God’s deliverance to take place in their lives. He fasted, prayed and counseled these men, and through learning from his own past mistakes, Pastor Maxwell was instrumental in helping many men overcome the obstacles in their lives that kept them from becoming the men that God called them to be.

I really enjoyed reading Do You Wanna Be Made Whole because it ministers to men from all walks of life, especially to those of the household of faith who have not identified certain areas of their lives that hold them back from walking in the way the Lord would have them to walk. We rarely hear about anything for the men in our churches and communities, and I found the read to be so refreshing and encouraging. I recommend this book to pastors and those who minister to men.

When Dorian Tobias, ace reporter for the Pine Bluff Farmers' Voice in Pine Bluff Arkansas, heads to England to find her missing twin sister, Adrian and set her free. While posing as her twin, she doesn't expect to be attracted to the man who she thinks put Adrian in jail.

Scandalous by Renee Alexis is a post from: APOOO

If you asked her what inspired her writing, she would tell you it all comes from first-hand experience. So when she tells her twin, Dorian, that she is headed to England to meet Stuart Westlake, Dorian thinks she is out of her mind. Stuart is a notorious playboy and Adrian is about to start something she cannot finish. Renee Alexis’ Scandalous takes readers on an adventure thru England’s country as Dorian sets out to find what happened to her twin.

Alexis short story is intriguing and full of suspense. The description of England was breathtaking; however, portions of the story dragged and became redundant. Towards the end, I found myself reading only to finish the story and not in hopes of a happy ending.

Niobia Bryant

1 writer with

3 Publishers

15+ books

4 Genres

Celebrates 10 years of being an author with 2 award nominations and 3 new book releases in 2010

Message from a Mistress is your 15th novel since you started your career as a published author in 2000. What was the inspiration behind this book and its storyline of a woman sending a text message to alert her friends of her affair with one of their husbands?

My first book that was published ten years ago was a romance and I enjoyed–and still enjoy–telling these really great stories about the love a black woman and black man have for each other. But I always wanted to tell more drama driven fictional stories where there was no guarantee of a happy ending. Where people dealt with real meaty and complex issues in their lives. So I had to one day cross over into the commercial or mainstream fiction genre.

Message from a Mistress is my third mainstream work and it is a look at the dynamics of both marriage and friendship and how they can be affected by secrets, lies and betrayals. My main inspiration was not just to deliver drama and scandal but to really travel the road many marriages take that leads to that ultimate betrayal and then to examine the effects of it. More than my previous mainstreams novels, I truly believe that Message from a Mistress is the one that most captures the reason why I wanted to write more than just romance fiction.

Message from a Mistress was loosely inspired by the 1940’s film A Letter to Three Wives, and your Hoodwives series was inspired by the television show Desperate Housewives on ABC… it seems that you find inspiration in TV and film to influence your writing. Are you inspired to tell stories that share views of what women of color aka “sistahs” would do in particular scenarios?

Definitely. Although the vast majority of my books are completely original I have been influenced by my own desire to see “you know what would a sistah do in this same situation.”

For the Hoodwives series, my co-author and I were like “Desperate? Puh-leeze. Living in a beautiful subdivision in a great neighborhood? They want desperate? How about the wives in the projects? We’ll show you desperation.” The idea for the series was born and then we came up with four original storylines for the wives.

I loved, loved, loved the movie “A Letter to Three Wives”. I enjoyed the concept of three wives learning that their mutual friend has run off with one of their husbands and then have the entire day to ponder which one of them has been betrayed. It’s really clever and it intrigued on so many levels. So I wanted to modernize the story and give it some new perspectives– like adding the wives having secrets of their own. I really just wanted to see where I could go with it. Again the general premise is the same but the actual stories for each character are original and I had a lot of fun bringing those characters to life in Message from a Mistress.

You write in 4 genres… and are signed to 3 different publishing houses… very impressive…how did that happen for you?

I am definitely ambitious and very focused on living my dreams. The same way that I write in different genres, I read different genres. Black, white, whatever. From non-fiction by Cornel West to street-lit by Donald Goines. Sci-fi, young adult fiction, romance, commercial fiction, literary fiction and those like Tina McElroy Ansa and Gloria Naylor who have found a nice blend of commercial and literary fiction–I read it all. I wanted to try my hand at a lot of it. People always say to write what you enjoy. Well, I enjoy a lot of different things and it transitioned over into my writing.

I started out in romance because I did my research and discovered it was easier to get published without agent in this particular genre. Those books did well and I eventual got the agent. I had these different stories in me that I wanted in print so I came up with proposals over the years and my agent got to work making the deals happen.

This year you are nominated for the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Award for Best African American Romance for your 9th full length romance novel “Make You Mine” as well as the Best Steamy Romance in the 2010 Emma Award presented by Romance Slam Jam. Congratulations on those accolades. As a national bestselling author, how important are these award nominations to you?

The award nominations are great. They are testament that the hard work you put into a book is appreciated and respected. It’s a great way, besides having a great sell through percentage, to know that you’re getting it done; that people enjoy what you’re doing. I’ve been up for a lot of awards in the past ten years and I’ve won some, but I’m always just as excited as if it was my very first nomination because I have great passion and love for this writing game.

For someone who is celebrating her 10-year anniversary in book publishing and has over 15 novels of your own, what is your greatest achievement to date and what would you like to accomplish in the next 10 years?

I think the fact that I once dreamed of getting published and having just one book deal and to now have four is a great achievement for me. I’m a girl from a single-parent household from Newark, NJ who use to sit on the back of the public bus and tell stories to my friends and anyone who would listen. I used to write short stories in my notebook. I used to say I will have a book published before I turn a certain age. I did it. But I have even more dreams. I am a national bestseller which means I have hit some bestseller lists across the country but I definitely want to hit the New York Times or USA Today. Also, like any other author I would like to see one of my books turned into a major movie or television show. So in a nutshell, New York Times and a movie deal. Point blank, those two things are definitely on my to-do list.

Book trailers…your trailers for Message from a Mistress and Fabulous are really great. How important is this promotional tool to bringing awareness to your books? Where can we find other trailers from your previous books?

The book trailers are commercials basically. They are a more innovative way to let people learn about your book and see what it’s all about. The visual aspect of it is very important and it if done properly it can convey the tone of the book to the reader.

I do have a YouTube channel for all of my trailers. It’s:

http://www.youtube.com/user/niobiabryant. The trailers are also on my website www.niobiabryant.com and on my networking pages like MySpace and Facebook.

For those who have never read one of your books please suggest a book in each one of the categories that you write in for them to begin reading–

Let’s see for one of my “sexy, funny and oh so real” romances, I suggest my GIVE ME FEVER. It comes out in May of this year and its book 3 in a series centered on the Strong family.

For the teen fiction of course I recommend my debut book, FABULOUS. I am writing under the name Simone Bryant. It’s about a clique at a private school for children of celebrities.

For urban fiction, my solo book as Meesha Mink debut in January 2011 so I suggest starting with the book that kicked off the series, DESPERATE HOODWIVES.

For mainstream, I suggest MESSAGE FROM A MISTRESS. It really is a smart, well-written, emotional, drama-filled roller coaster ride in the pages of the book.

What writers inspire you and why?

I am most inspired by authors Tina McElroy Ansa and Gloria Naylor. Tina’s book, The Hand I Fan With and Gloria’s novel, Mama Day are two of my all time favorite works of fiction. What I love about them is the blend of literary and commercial fiction. They both write very smart, entertaining, character driven books that remained with me so many years after first reading them. As a writer I want to be able to create that kind of lasting connection between my books and readers.

Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Message of a Mistress?

I loved, loved, loved the 1940’s movie “A Letter to Three Wives”.

With seventeen novels under your belt, how have you changed in terms of your growth in the book industry? Was Message of a Mistress easier to produce for you?

I’ve learned so much in the past 10 years as an author. My first book took me a year to write and now I can definitely complete a well written book in less time. Writing in multiple genres allows me to continuously work towards perfecting my craft as a storyteller too. I’ve grown in my business acumen. I am a knowledgeable author. I research the industry, who’s doing what, and I keep abreast of what sells, where and why… this all helps me stay fresh and relevant to what avid readers want from authors. Writing Message of a Mistress was a smooth and timely process. I concentrated on keeping it entertaining since the entire story takes place in one day. There are many character flashbacks, but overall writing the book was not difficult at all.

As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to Message of a Mistress getting out to the public?

The internet has been such a fun way of promoting the release of Message from a Mistress and I’m sure will prove itself vital in the upcoming sales success as well. I have my Twitter pages, I have my Facebooks pages, MySpace and my personal blog www.niobiabryant.com; I use them all to keep my fans updated and to invite new ones. Tweetdeck is a must for me. I simply love the way it works.

As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish Message of a Mistress?

Since I write in multiple genres it helps me stay organized by creating a synopsis and an outline for each of my books. I write a full synopsis of the entire story and the first chapter which I usually have to submit to the publisher. Afterward I begin writing with the use of an outline chapter breakdown. Message from a Mistress took a few months not including editing.

What’s next for Niobia Bryant?

I am working on promoting my three 2010 book releases, Fabulous my first teen fiction/young adult novel on Kimani Tru, Message from a Mistress on Dafina/Kensington and in May I will release Give Me Fever on Dafina. I’m doing my first virtual book tour starting March 1st. Readers can keep up with the itinerary on my blog and by following me on Twitter and Facebook.
