One morning Jasmine Rodgers sends her children off to school, only to have her marriage of ten years turned upside down. Her husband, Reginald, tells her that he is leaving her and the children for another woman. Jasmine is devastated.
Do Unto Others by Marcia Wynn is a post from: APOOO

Jasmine Rodgers is shocked to find out her husband, Reginald, of 10 years is leaving her for another woman. In DO UNTO OTHERS by Marcia Wynn, we get a chance to also hear from the cheater. Reginald feels as though his wife is not attentive to his needs. After having two children and running a non-profit organization, Jasmine has put her focus on all but Reginald. Reginald does not talk to Jasmine about their problems: he allows her to go on thinking they are the happiest couple alive. Instead he confides in Yvette about his marital problems. Well, this is when the emotional affair begins. And this only leads to a sexual affair months later. Jasmine has to figure out how to pick up the pieces and move on with her life…without Reginald.

Jasmine’s best friend, Giana, also appears to be in a loving marriage. But on the inside she feels as though her husband, Patrick, has been cheating on her for years. They married when she was young and now more than 10 years later, she is no longer the young hot girl he married. Is Patrick really looking for the next hot thing? Or is it all in Giana’s mind? On top of her worry about Patrick she is faced to deal with some devastating news.

Wynn manages to give the prospective of both the husband and the wife. I enjoyed hearing both sides to each story. It seemed to be a self-help and a novel tied in one. This storyline was written in a narrative format and had too much telling vs. showing. It really could have been a short story. Wynn appears to have great knowledge when it comes to relationships. It is a possible good book for those marriages that may be on the brink of separation.

Barely off the plane from Africa for two minutes and some American sensationalism is there to greet her. Glad not to be in public relations anymore, Trina Michaels plans to ignore the headline. Until she recognizes the faces of the accused.
Selling My Soul by Sherri Lewis is a post from: APOOO

Selling My Soul is the long awaited sequel of Sherri L. Lewis’s debut novel, My Soul Cries Out. Trina “Tree” Michaels has returned from Mozambique, Africa; where she has lived as a missionary for two years. Besides returning to a more fast-paced, technology dependent, and wasteful society, Tree returns to find all is not as she had left it. The first headlines she sees in the newspaper, right there in the airport, brings memories of an unhappy time for her best friend, Monica. She realized how much she had missed her friend, but most of all she had missed her mother and her sister, Tiffany.

Tree had kept in contact with her family as best she could while in Africa. However, her family could not say that they had always kept her abreast of everything that was going on in their lives. Tree was not only returning to an environment she no longer felt connected to, but she was also returning to changes in the lives of the people she loved. Her mother was diagnosed with cancer and Tree felt she needed to take care of her. She also needed to take care of get caught up in her own financial debacle. All the plans she had made in her mind before returning to Washington were crumbling before her. She so desperately wanted to head back to Mozambique, but that now seemed like a dream that would never come to pass. Tree’s life was slowly unraveling and she had to make certain decisions that might her soul. What price would she have to pay to put everyone’s life back in order? Could Tree live with her decisions?

I must admit the only book of Lewis’s I have not read is her debut novel. Now more than ever before, I want to read it. No, it has nothing to do with me feeling as though I was missing some thing. My desire to read it is so I can read more about the characters that I enjoyed and my curiosity of such a strong subject matter. Lewis wrote a story unveiling controversial issues within the church. I take my hat off to her for being so bold. I recommend Selling My Soul and any of Lewis’ previous works to readers of Christian fiction; this is not the preachy stuff but deals with real life issues.

I received this book for review purposes from the publisher.

Nutritional Racism by Rambling Raven

There is a disturbing trend going on here in Chicago. The recession as we know, has hit nearly all American businesses hard, causing many companies to close stores or reduce the merchandise that they offer. The African American community, especially on the south side of the Chicago, has seen an alarming drop in one type of store in particular– grocery stores. I don’t mean little corner stores I am talking about big chain supermarkets. Jewels and Dominick’s, the two largest chain supermarket stores in this city, have over the past few years closed many of their stores. Sadly most of the store closings have been in the African American community.

The closing of the supermarkets are troublesome in our community for many reasons. The stores were easily assessable by public transportation, and for a community who relies heavily on public transportation that was very important. Now, in many neighborhoods, people have to travel miles outside of the community for groceries. The distance is a problem when you have to deal with Chicago’s weather, and it is expensive. One bus ride costs $2.25 a ride; it can easily cost a family over ten dollars to just get to and from a store. That can be a costly trip to people on a fixed income. It is even harder on the elderly in the community.

The stores that are easily accessible now in the community are the corner stores that are usually ill equipped to handle a variety of groceries. The corner stores usually only carry junk food. They often are limited in space and therefore mainly stock chips, candy, juices, some toiletries and a limited amount of processed foods. You may find a few that have “meat counters” but the meat is usually questionable in freshness and quality. And the prices at those corner stores are ridiculously marked up.

The other food sources that are left in the communities are the fast food restaurants. Nearly every corner in the African American community has a McDonalds, Burger King, a variety of fried fish shacks, and a host of other cheap food stands that sell low quality, high fat fast foods. And every now and then a neighborhood may get a discount food warehouse store that specializes in generic food brands. However, these stores mostly sell processed (boxed) foods and little fresh produce and meats.

So where are the fresh meats, fruits and vegetables? The African American community has some of the highest rates of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity in this country. Most of those illnesses are attributed to poor dietary health. How can a community heal itself if it doesn’t have access to quality food? In some of our neighborhoods a person can not get the basic daily allowances of fruits, vegetables and grains because there is nowhere to get them from.

I personally have seen four big supermarkets close within the communities I live and work in. And nothing has been put in their places. I have chosen to live and work within the African American community on the south side of the city Yet, I do not shop there. The stores I have gone into do not measure up to the stores in other parts of the city. The produce is lacking and there’s no variety. I eat a lot of tofu, sushi, whole grains and organic produce and meats. I have a difficult time finding them on the south side of the city. Therefore, I travel miles and miles outside of my community to find quality food. And yes I pay more for the quality and the transportation; thank God I can do that. I shudder to think what families who can not afford to travel outside of the community do.

I am not sure why so many of the big name supermarkets have decided that the African American community is the place to slash stores. And I am not sure why in this politically charged city no politician within our community has spoken up. The only places I have seen the problem addressed has been on the evening news, due to the release of a recent study pertaining to access to adequate nutrition within Chicago’s black community. And a popular radio station took on the issue due to high call volumes on the topic from its listeners.

So it looks like we will have to continue to fight for the bare minimal in our communities. We will never tackle all those health issues that plague us because there appears to be few alternatives to the low quality foods in the community. It amazes me that the issue of health care rages on in Washington based on mere politics. If we are really concern about the health care in this country we must take a hard look at preventative measures. And there is nothing as preventative as ensuring that all Americans have access to quality food.

Some leaders are born, but most leaders are made—and The Little Black Book of Success will show you how to make it to the top, one step at a time.
The Little Black Book of Success by Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood and Rhonda Joy McLean is a post from: APOOO

Ismiled when I saw the title of the book, The Little Black Book of Success by Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood and Rhonda Joy McLean, thinking, `Another self-help book for sisters.’ However, the fact that Elaine Meryl Brown was one of the co-authors intrigued me because I had read her fiction titles. I will say that The Little Black Book of success is definitely a self-help book, but it is so much more. It is filled from cover to cover with life instructions, career information and simple common sense revelations. What I really enjoyed were the Mama-isms at the end of each chapter such as, `All is fair in love and business,’ and a personal favorite, `There is no elevator to success; you must take the stairs.’ While the book is filled with advice, it is also witty and interesting.

The Little Black Book of Success is targeted to black women, but every woman under the sun could benefit from reading it and heeding what it offers. I recommend it for all women, of all ages, persuasions or ethnicities.

“Checkered Fences” is Alma Hudon'sfirst novel. She was encouraged to write by her high school teacher, Mr. Walker. He saw much potential in her and encouraged her to continue writing. At each high school reunion, he would ask, “Are you writing?” Hudson enjoys writing urban stories that affect the lives of everyday people.
On the ‘Net with Author Alma Hudson is a post from: APOOO

Greetings Alma and welcome to APOOO!

In 140 words or less, tell readers a little about Alma Hudson.

I work in legal management and I’m actively involved in community and environmental issues. I live with my husband, Eugene, and two children in Lancaster, California and “Checkered Fences” is my first novel. I have an Associate’s and Bachelor of Arts Degree. I was encouraged to write by my high school teacher, Mr. Walker. He saw much potential in me and encouraged me to continue writing. At each high school reunion, he would ask, “Are you writing?” I enjoy writing urban stories that affect the lives of everyday people. My dream is to make Mr. Walker proud, to retire from my job, and write full time.

In 140 words or less, tell readers why Checkered Fences would make a great addition to our personal library.

Imagine a young black woman, Diane Jones, falling in love with a white man in the early 70’s during a time of turbulent change. The war in Vietman is ragging; the civil rights and the women’s rights movements are in full bloom. Diane fights against racism, poverty, domestic violence, and dreams of going to college. To complicate matters further, militant Diane falls in love with a white man but believes that she should be with her own kind. Then imagine that this was the author’s true situation. Which choice would you make? This story explores the ugly racism that propelled our nation’s conscious to change toward a more diversified culture.

With the election of our first African American president, society has evolved to become more acceptant of interracial relationships and marriages then 50 to 100 years ago. The 1960s and 1970s were a period of political and social change with the civil rights, women’s rights, Vietnam War, and labor union movements in full bloom. These movements had a direct effect on changes we see today. Many young people today read about these changes, but can’t relate to what it was like to have lived in that time or understand the hardships and sacrifices people made to bring about these changes. My book details two families’ lives and struggles during this time of change and is based upon my personal experiences. I feel it’s important to document this time from a personal perspective for future generations to read.

How did you come up with the plot for Checkered Fences?

The plot is based upon my life growing up in the 1960’s and 1970’s and a real interracial relationship. My book also addresses other real issues such as domestic violence, women issues, race relations, and diversity. Many of these issues still affect the lives of people both young and old, but aren’t discussed in the classroom or in a public setting. By telling my story, I want to put my life experiences in the public eyes for all to read in hopes of helping other people affected by these issues.
Are you working on another book and, if so, can you share a brief summary with us?

Yes, I have written a second book called the “The Trouble With Change”. It’s a crime story that makes a strong stand against domestic and sexual violence. It is also bases upon my personal experiences. Here’s the synopsis of the book. Sondra’s only dream in life is to complete college and make her family proud. But when she moves into an apartment she can barely afford near the University of Southern California, her dreams start changing.

After paying for school with an academic scholarship and barely surviving with very little money, her suspicious and somewhat creepy neighbor Vick shows an interest in her. But Sondra still has her mind set on the goal of completing college. After Vick’s many attempts to force his attentions on her, she gives in and starts a relationship with him, a relationship filled with domestic and sexual violence. Sondra thinks that if only she could change Vick, their relationship would work and she could finish her education.

Will Sondra be able to change Vick’s violent behaviors and settle back down into the life she’s always wanted for herself, or will Vick end up changing her forever?

Thus far, what has been your favorite 2010 moment?

My favorite moment was a reflection of the first year of accomplishments by our first African American president, Barack Obama in his “State of the Union” speech. Up until then, I didn’t feel as a part of the American dream. It makes me feel proud to known that the president was elected by all races of people and thus the acceptance of me as a black African American citizen.

Which living person do you most admire?

I would say I admire my mother more than any living person I know. My mother married at thirteen years old with only an eight-grade education. She worked hard all her life to raise me and my brother’s and sister’s. She survived domestic violence, poverty, and went back to school obtaining both a high school diploma and an AA degree. She is now retired from her job and is still actively involved in her community. What greater example could I have in my life than my mother?

What are your most overused words or phrases?

My favorite phrases are, “Let’s get busy” and “Why put off for tomorrow what you can do today”.

If you could meet any historical character, who would it be and what would you say to him or her?

The historical character I would love to meet is Harriett Tubman. I would like to ask her what gave her the drive to help so many people? I would also like to know if at any time, in her life, she was afraid to put herself in danger time and time again? And if so, what did she do to overcome this fear? I would also like to thank her for the dedication she gave to so many issues and people in her lifetime.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

My biggest pet peeve is a person who has a gift and doesn’t use it. I see people suffering great adversities such as illness, being homeless, blindness, and cripple working hard to achieve their goals. Then there are those people born with a gift and don’t use it. They make every excuse they can think of as to why they can’t use this gift and don’t even try to accomplish any of their goals.

What is your most surprising talent or interest – the one that makes people say, “I didn’t know you (did/liked/knew)…”?

I think that my most surprising talent or interest is I like to stretch and paint. This is an interest that most people don’t know about except my immediate family.

What’s one song that people would be surprised to know is on your IPod (or in your music collection)?

The one song that people would be surprised to know that’s in my music collection is the Carpenters, “Close To You”. I love all of Karen’s music and I think that her music is timeless.

Name five things that make your world go round.

I would say that on the top of the list would be people. I have a great love of people and the more diverse the better. The second would be recycling. I want to save the earth for my grandchildren and future generations. The third would be education. I strongly believe that the way out of poverty is through education. The fourth would be getting involved in your community. The fifth would be hard work and not giving up on your dreams in life. Whatever your dreams are in life, you should work hard to obtain them and surround yourself with positive people.

Miki, Valencia, Teela Raye, and Brandi share one thing...they are all addicted to sex. United through Sexaholics Anonymous, these women try to recover from their dependence on wild, spontaneous, and even sometimes, dangerous sex. From whips and chains, to sex in public, they have done it all!
Sexaholics by Pynk is a post from: APOOO

Sexaholics by Pynk
Amazon.com rating: 4
APOOO rating: 4
Freak McNasty

Pynk’s sophomore novel, Sexaholics, expertly delivers on its title. The novel examines four women from different walks of life who have one thing in common; sexual addiction. Each woman has her own sexual indulgence. And each entices the senses with her wild experiences.

Miki Summers’ addiction leads her to share her body with various people; creating spicy sexcapades with anonymous suitors. When her indiscretions confront her, she is changed forever. But is it for better or worse?

Valencia Sanchez gets her groove on with men and women. One would think having a well-to-do fiancé, who wants her all to himself, would be enough to quench her sexual appetite–at least until she has the ring permanently on her finger. But when she is unable to give up the one thing he forbids, will her fiance’ give her walking papers or indulge in her lifestyle for old time’s sake?
Teela Raye’s voyeurism comes with two advantages; providing her visual stimulation for sexual pleasure and adventures in sex for her mate. But how long can looking get her off? And what happens when she finds out her mate is not necessarily sharing anymore?

Brandi Williams is the plain Jane sister-girl. A school teacher by day and certified freak by night, she gives a new meaning to one-hitter-quitter. Brandi does not realize how deep her addiction runs until she begins to mix night and day; placing her freaky ways at the top of her list of priorities.

The common ground they stomp on is Sexaholics Anonymous meetings where they share their stories, receive the support they need to venture into recovery, and confront their addictions one day (or even one hour) at a time.

Pynk, once again, delivers a great novel. Although I could not personally relate to the characters, I am sure there are many who can. It is a very timely piece of fiction and in the right hands will help others who suffer from sexual addiction. I love how Pynk weaves education and entertainment without it seeming preachy. Erotica lovers will definitely appreciate such a gratifying read, but be warned-Sexaholics is definitely for the freakiest of freaks. I recommend this novel to erotica lovers who like hard-core, steamy sex scenes and Pynk supporters.

My Mother’s Child Blog Tour with Dwan Abrams

Dwan Abrams is a full-time novelist, freelance editor, and publisher. She’s the best-selling author of My Mother’s Child (the sequel to Divorcing the Devil), Married Strangers, Divorcing the Devil, Only True Love Waits, and The Scream Within. She’s the founder, publisher, and editorial director of Nevaeh Publishing, LLC a small press independent publishing house. She’s currently signed to Urban Christian, an imprint of Urban Books/Kensington. Her sixth novel, the second book in the Married Series, is set to hit national bookshelves in 2011. Visit Dwan online at http://dwanabrams.com.

Dwan, would you say you are an extrovert or introvert?

Depends on the occasion. I can be outgoing and sociable when I need to be and feel quite comfortable doing so. Most people would consider me to be extroverted, although I think I can be a bit introverted too.

Do you like to cook? If so, what are your favorite dishes to cook?

I know how to cook, but I don’t cook that often. When I do cook, my signature dishes are lasagna and Jambalaya.

Are you a sports fan? If so, tell us about your favorite sports and/or sports team.

I’m not fanatical about sports. However, I like basketball and this past Super Bowl. Since I live in Atlanta, I attend some of the Hawks games, but I prefer the Lakers. As for football, I like the Cowboys and the Saints.

Are there any other hobbies you wish to share?

Every time I visit a new state, I collect a souvenir spoon.

What movie(s) have you watched recently that you would recommend?

My favorite movies are horror films. Not everyone can get into my recommendations, so I won’t mention those. Most recently I enjoyed The House on the Left and Avatar.

Do you like books being turned into movies? If so, what is your favorite book-to-movie?

Yes. There have been many good ones. Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison comes to mind.

If My Mother’s Child was turned into a movie, who would you cast to play your characters?

Here goes… I’d cast Kerry Washington to play the lead character, Lyric Stokes, and Gary Dourdan would be perfect as her husband, Michael.

Which social networks do you enjoy the most?

Facebook hands down. I go on the site regularly.

What’s next for you?

On the writing front, my publisher, Urban Christian, an imprint of Urban Books/Kensington, has accepted my latest book proposal. That book is slated to be released in 2011; it’s the second book in the Married Series. The first book was Married Strangers. The second book focuses on the newly married Shania and Greg. I’m also releasing an ebook about publishing.

As the founder, publisher, and editorial director of Nevaeh Publishing, a small press independent publishing house, we’ll be releasing 10 fiction and 2 non-fiction titles in 2010. We’re currently accepting 2011 submissions.

About the Book

Lyric Stokes lives, by most standards, a charmed life. Married to Michael Stokes, a prominent heart surgeon, she has financial security and lives in the lap of luxury. All is not perfect, though. Lyric feels inadequate because she gave birth to a daughter, rather than the son that her husband so desperately wanted.

After an unexpected turn of events, Lyric discovers that she’s pregnant again, but now she has to decide whether she even wants to keep the child she has longed for. She seeks solace in her church, where her daughter also feels at home; but they can’t get Michael to join them. Disagreeing with organized religion, he has put his job before all else, including God. The distance between the couple grows further every day.

Nigel Fredericks has a history of stalking women. He’s been accused, but never convicted. Now he’s set his sights on Lyric. She’s at a low point in her life, and Nigel knows just how to take advantage of that vulnerability. Lyric’s life is turned upside down; Nigel is like a cancer eating away at her mental stability, her marriage, and ultimately, her life. Will Michael reevaluate his priorities and his faith in time to save his family?

A wealthy boyfriend, designer clothes, exotic vacations, and a Central Park penthouse-these are a few of Eva Cantrell's favorite things. But when her sugar daddy turns out to be an investor swindler and goes on the run, he leaves an unsuspecting Eva without a couture bag to her name.

All About Eva by Deidre Berry is a post from: APOOO

Eva Cantrell meets Donovan J. Dorsey by chance. She is out with her friend and is introduced to him and immediately she is taken in by him. He is handsome, educated and, most importantly, paid. Within a short period of time, Eva discovers that Donovan has no problem sharing his wealth, especially sharing it with her. Eva becomes used to the good life and for a couple of years she lives in the lap of pampered luxury. However, when it is discovered that Donovan may be on the left side of the law, the party ends and Eva ends back up on the south side of Chicago. All About Eva by Deidre Berry tells the story of Eva’s rise and fall and her eventual growth.

All About Eva is a page-turner that is filled with details about the high life and the low life. It also shows how easily life can change and that while it is good to be taken care of, one must know how to take care of one’s self. I recommend this novel to all who love drama-filled, contemporary storytelling.

When Xavier meets his fanatical fan, Pilar, he gets much more than he bargained for. What starts out as an erotic one-night stand quickly spirals out of control into a dangerous game of obsession and pain with both parties playing to win.

Diary of a Stalker by Electa Rome Parks is a post from: APOOO

The acknowledgement in the front of Electa Rome Parks’ newest release, Diary of a Stalker, states it has been two years since her last literary offering. Well, she came back with a bang. Ms. Parks has penned a fast-paced, seductive, hot and steamy book. When I opened the bold, red cover with the piercing brown eyes, I stepped into the world of Pilar.

Pilar claims that she is the number one fan of bestselling author, Xavier Preston. Something about Xavier captures her heart through his stories and his kindness toward his readers. Because Xavier is sexy and tall, he believes that he can hit it, then quit it. However, what Xavier cannot see is her determination to have him as her man, no matter the cost. Everyone of Xavier’s actions triggers a reaction from Pilar. Are all of her reactions healthy for either of them? Will one of them regret any of their decisions?

Aside from one of the main characters sharing a name with my son, there were also some other minute details that made me smile. Everything from the settings to the characters’ believability and the strong subject matter had me wanting more. I could not turn the pages fast enough in an attempt to figure out whose life would be forever changed due to compulsive behaviors. Ultimately, a great example of how a stalker behaves and thinks is delivered through the pages of Diary of a Stalker, a book I recommend to readers of erotica and suspense.

I received this book for review purposes from the author.

How Can I Motivate A Teenage Mother? by Rambling Raven

I am tutoring an eighth-grade student who is out of school for the next six weeks because she just gave birth. Yes, that is correct. I am tutoring a 13 year-old who is now the mother of a three week baby girl. As a teacher, to this student, the only thing that I am in charge of is giving this child an one hour tutoring section five days a week. However, the person that I am, I can’t just clock in for an hour a day and not get to know this young lady. I am very pleasant to the young lady and have tried to establish a rapport with her. I try very hard not to come across as judgmental. In fact, I have not even brought up the subject of the pregnancy. The only thing I told her was that although she has a lot more responsibilities now, it is not impossible to succeed. I told her that now more than ever she has to stay focused on her dreams and goals. I have spoken to her about the high schools she would like to attend, and what she would like to be in life. However, I don’t think that is enough.

On one of my visits, the student didn’t want to do much of anything. She was in a funky mood to say the least. I later detected that she and her mother had an argument before I arrived. I couldn’t dig deep as to what the issue was so I went out and purchased the young lady a journal. The next day I told her that the journal was a place to store her thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams. I told her that she doesn’t have to let anyone see the journal. It was just a place for her to release her frustrations. She later told me that she loves to write in it and she has been writing in it since the day I gave it to her.

My next discussion with the student was about books. She said that she doesn’t like to read. She said that read a lot from first to fifth grade, and then she stopped. I asked her why; she stated that reading got boring. She said the last book she read was by Zane. I told her that I was not ever going to bring her a Zane book at her age (I don’t care if she is a mother or not). I tried to extract from her what type of genres she likes. She just continued to put up a wall concerning reading. I have a book called Make Lemonade, about a 17 year-old mother who finds friendship and hope in a 14 year-old schoolmate. Yet, I am reluctant to give the book to this particular student because I don’t want to offend her or her mother with the subject matter of the book.

I have to admit that I am at a lost with this student. Through the conversations that I have had with her I know that she is embarrassed to return to school. I know that she is frustrated with having to complete her schoolwork and performing the tasks of a mother. I am fearful that she may not make it through high school. I try to be motivating to this child, yet I don’t want to over step my boundaries. It was made clear to me before I took on the assignment that the child has some family and emotional issues, but my only job is to provide her with one hour of tutoring a day. The teacher in me wants to do so much more. I want to take her parenting magazines and give her inspirational materials and books. I find this to be a teachable moment. It is too late to preach to her about the ills of teenage sex but I sure would like to help her on this long and difficult journey. What can I do when my hands are tied by the school system and by a distant parent?

Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Are there any books you have come across that may be helpful? How can I help to motivate this young lady when she doesn’t have any hobbies? The only thing that she has shown interest in is writing but I don’t know what to do with that when her journal is for her personal thoughts? Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
