BACKGROUND:

Built from the ground up in the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan, Tactical NAV (also known as TACNAV-X) was developed by a U.S. Army Field Artillery officer with the vision of crafting a low-cost and highly accurate mobile navigation platform tailored for the U.S. military.

Tactical NAV’s journey began in the Pech and Korengal Valleys of Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Capt. Jonathan J. Springer, a Field Artilleryman serving as a Fire Support Officer with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), embarked on the development of this tactical navigation platform immediately following the memorial services for Spc. Blair D. Thompson and Spc. Jared C. Plunk, who were killed in action on June 25, 2010.

Despite initial rejections by the Department of Defense, Captain Springer remained steadfast in his mission to continue developing Tactical NAV — even to this day. His ultimate goals were (and still are) to make a positive difference for other soldiers and service members and to honor the men and women killed and wounded in battle.

He used his life savings to fund and develop TACNAV-X, all with the ultimate hope of saving military lives, and helping his fellow service members in accomplishing their missions at home and abroad.

Tactical NAV officially launched on the App Store on February 14, 2011.

TACNAV-X’s performance accurately matches that of the AN/PSN-13 Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR).

Using Pinbox on an iPod Touch or an iPad:
Like other map apps, Pinbox uses GPS to determine your location. iPods and Wi-Fi-only iPads do not have a GPS receiver. On these devices, Pinbox provides your approximate location using information based on your proximity to known Wi-Fi networks (when on and available). The more accurate the available information, the smaller the circle identifying your position on the map. This feature is not available in all areas. Known Wi-Fi networks are predominantly in urban areas. An internet connection is required to load maps, look up addresses, and search. Although Pinbox can be installed on iPads, it’s not formatted for the larger iPad screen - it runs doubled like all other iPhone apps.

The app uses photon accumulation in low-light conditions, so the number of frames per second may be quite low. This behavior is not lag or a bug, but a necessary process that works around the physical limits of a standard smartphone camera.

The final image quality also depends heavily on your specific smartphone model and the amount of available ambient light.

For the app to work correctly, it needs at least a minimal light source, such as a starry sky or moonlight outdoors. In complete darkness, such as an enclosed room without windows, the app will not be able to create an image. Conversely, in daylight or bright light, the screen will turn completely white because the sensor is oversaturated.

What is an E6B?

An E6B flight computer is traditionally an analog device resembling a combination slide rule and slide wheel that performs calculations specific to aviation. For example, an E6B can be used to calculate heading and groundspeed after taking into account forecast winds. An E6B is also used to calculate data used for performance planning such as density altitude. Our version goes beyond the analog E6B and even beyond all other E6B apps by including functionality to calculate time, rate and radius of turns, pivotal altitude (great for flight training use), and more.

Most users, however, will prefer to let ezAlmanacOne do all of the work. Simply enter the basic sight parameters, make and enter your observations, and ezAlmanacOne will do the rest. It performs all of the steps to correct your observation, find GP of the object, do the sight reduction, and plot the LOP. No steps are skipped and all details are shown. Click where the LOPs cross in the plot and you have found your fix!

Besides finding your fix, ezAlmanacOne is one of the best tools available to perform compass checks from a bearing observation of one of the navigational bodies. The compass check function supports checking up to 5 devices from a single bearing observation. ezAlmanacOne will also create a report of your compass check that can be saved as a PDF file or printed for the ships records.

Celestial navigation instructors love ezAlmanacOne because it does celestial navigation exactly as they teach it. Values obtained from the Nautical Almanac and Pub. 229 are clearly identified with an icon of the book. When you press the book icon you are taken to the page that has that value with the row, column and value highlighted. Even when ezAlmanacOne is doing all the work, it can teach you how to do it manually using the books.

For manual celestial navigation you can generate and print Nautical Almanac pages to use as a backup on a passage. You can even print the sight reduction forms and plotting sheets you will need.

ezAlmanacOne performs all astronomical calculations using the NOVAS 3.1 software from the US Naval Observatory (USNO) and a JPL ephemeris that covers the years 1960 through 2059. The About screen provides links to all of the open-source resources used in the app and gives a little information about the developer GeoPOI. The Map Settings screen is where you can change between one of four different basemaps, download offline imagery, turn on geolocation, and toggle specific point categories. Finally, the Map screen is where it all comes together!

On the Map screen, there are a series of circle clusters at distant zooms that indicate how many points are within a given cluster. As you tap the clusters to zoom in, individual points and icons become visible, along with trails, roads, and boundaries. These features can be clicked on to reveal the name, location, and other useful information. The map screen also has two search tools - the left one can be used to look up addresses and towns, while the right one will allow you to query the names of the features in the database.

Calculo de Rutas por Micros
En un lapso no mayor a 10 segs. el usuario obtiene todas las opciones posibles que hay para transportarse en las rutas de micro ingresadas en la base de datos, las diferentes opciones muestran el tiempo de viaje, el nombre ó número de la ruta ó las rutas a tomar para llegar a destino y la ruta que seguirá la ruta escogida para llegar hasta su destino desde el origen que haya señalado, el origen será tomado de la información GPS del dispositivo.
Al hacer click sobre las rutas de la opción deseada, aparecerá la fotografía de un micro de esa línea, para dar una información gráfica del como luce el micro que tiene que tomar, luego al hacer click en la opción “ver ruta” el usuario podrá ver la ruta que describirá la línea hasta el destino indicado. Los resultados están ordenados de tal manera que la opción con el menor tiempo de viaje aparezca primero.
Rutas
El usuario introduce la ruta a buscar al hacer click sobre el resultado aparecerá la fotografía de un micro de la ruta, y 2 opciones, “Ver Ruta” y “Puntos de Interes” , en “ver ruta” aparecerá la ruta georeferenciada del micro en cuestión sobre un plano de la ciudad de santa cruz, en “puntos de interés” aparecerá los puntos mas importantes sobre la ruta en cuestión con los tiempos de viaje de punto a punto, para darle una idea al usuario del tiempo aproximado de viaje de punto a punto.
Algunos puntos de interés tienen las coordenadas conectadas a la ubicación georeferenciada de estos y cuando el usuario le da click a estos puntos le aparece la ubicación de este punto referenciada en el plano de santa cruz, asi mismo le pregunta el como llegar a este punto, si por taxi o por bus, cuando el usuario da click en alguna de estas opciones, la aplicación enlaza esto con los modulos “calcular ruta en micros” o “Taxi” según sea la opción indicada.
Taxi
En este modulo el usuario es presentado el mismo plano de calcular ruta de micros, mostrando la ubicación georeferenciada de la ubicación actual por medio del GPS, el usuario escoge el destino deseado, la aplicación trazará la ruta mas directa al lugar indicado, y presentará la opción “tarifas y móviles” al hacer click sobre esta opción tenemos un cuadro que nos muestra la distancia hacia el lugar, el tiempo aproximado de viaje y la tarifa aproximada que cobrará el móvil por el servicio.
Paradas
Si el usuario está dentro de zona central le indicará la ubicación de las paradas a 400 metros alrededor de su ubicación georeferenciada.
Al hacer click en una de las paradas aparecerá las líneas cercanas a esta ubicación, asi el usuario podrá ver donde tomar la línea deseada de esa parada, ver la fotografía del tipo de micro, la ruta del mismo y los puntos de interés de esa línea, pudiendo realizar las mismas acciones que son permitidas en el modulo “Rutas”
Al hacer click en “Puntos de Interes” entra a una búsqueda simple, en la que puede buscarse por letras que estén incluidas en los puntos de interés o simplemente darle click en buscar para que aparezcan todos los puntos de interés.
Puntos de Interes
En este modulo el usuario puede buscar puntos de interés clasificados por categorías, y podrá tener acceso a información pormenorizada de los lugares allí indicados, del mismo modo enlazará con el modulo Paradas, en su sección “puntos de interés” para poder acceder a esos puntos de interés ya sea por taxi o bus, enlazando esto con los modulos “Taxi” y “calcular ruta por micro”

LINZ TOPO250 series maps are used at lower zoom levels for easier navigation.

Trail Treker is a map viewing tool for use with the Trail Treker map publishing service. Trail Treker works with clubs, tourism agencies and municipalities to make their maps work offline on end user smartphones. Once the map is loaded, you no longer need phone service; the GPS receiver in your phone will operate without phone service. In fact, we recommend that you place your phone in Airplane Mode if you are in an area with limited or partial phone service to conserve your battery.
Trail Treker will also electronically, via GPS location, show local businesses and points of interest. You can store your own points of interest as well. Key points such as survival shelters, supplies, or emergency evacuation points may be shown on various maps.

The Trail Treker app will allow you to download any member map. If you have a member map code, the map will be free. If not, the map will be an additional purchase.

Continued use of GPS in the background can decrease battery life.
