Will’s Creek Exhibition of Fine Art Opens at Allegany Arts Council

The 21st Annual Will’s Creek Exhibition of Fine Art opens Saturday, August 29 in
the Saville and Schwab Galleries of the Allegany Arts Council and will run through Saturday,
September 26. A virtual awards ceremony and juror talk will be held Saturday, September 12, at
7:00PM on Facebook Live!

This national exhibition and competition focuses on contemporary art, showcasing a wide
variety of art forms, mediums and expressions. It will be juried by Jessica Beck, Milton Fine
Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and will offer more
than $4,000 in prizes.

The theme for this year's Will’s Creek exhibition is "Shelter," a subject that has become
increasingly relevant as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Shelter can be synonymous with
home and physical space or it can be found abstractly through personal connections. The
boundaries of our private spaces have now become blurred as homes are becoming
multifunctional spaces for living, working, schooling, and caring for immediate and extended
family members. This exhibition will offer various perspectives on shelter by straddling both
physical realms of refuge and protection, and the psychological, emotional bonds constituted
by human connection.

In addition to in-gallery viewing, people will be able to view the works included in this
exhibition via an online gallery that will available via the Allegany Arts Council website at
www.alleganyartscouncil.org.

Nancie King Mertz, who was slated to jury the 2020 event, will remain as juror of the 2021 exhibition. A national and international award winner, Mertz has spent her career painting in oil and pastel. For the Azenadaga family, that tradition has included three trips from their home country of Ghana in West Africa to watch three of four brothers graduate from Frostburg State University. Brother number four is in his first year at FSU, so another trip may be coming up in a few years.

As international students attending Frostburg State, the four brothers now share a common experience. Three brothers, Raymond, Raphael and Reagan, are now alumni ? Reagan graduated in December 2019. The youngest is Richmond.

Recommended by an uncle who worked in the University System of Maryland, Raymond majored in electrical engineering and minored in physics and mathematics.

“When my oldest brother, Raymond, started to do research about schools, he came here and realized that Frostburg is a very quiet place,” explained Reagan. “And in Ghana, when you want to study, when you want to learn, you want an environment that is very enabling; you want an environment that is quiet, and Frostburg seemed like the best environment for that.”

Majoring in information technology, Raphael, the second son to attend Frostburg, from 2013 to 2017, made it into a tradition.
