Meet Liz! Liz is our new goldsmith at our Regent location! At the age of 15, she quickly found her passion for goldsmithing while working after school and on weekends at A. Kavanagh where she learnt how to polish and solder jewellery! She picked up the skills very quickly at a young age and was apprenticed by other goldsmiths, including our very own Thai who is currently our goldsmith at our Kenaston & Ness location – Winnipeg is a small world. Through hands on learning and reading tons of books, Liz began to perfect her technical skill in goldsmithing. Her passion for art and drawing naturally helped her creativity in the job. One of her favourite parts to the job is to help people fix or take something sentimental to them and making it new or wearable again. She also loves a good challenge of creating something new! In fact, one of her dreams for the future is to design and create her own jewellery. She is also interested in taking the GIA gemology course to expand her knowledge in gemstones. But for now, she is really enjoying working with customers at Appelt’s and taking special care of their jewellery for them.

Apart from work, Liz is a wife and a mother of two! Her son’s name is Foster (9) and her daughter’s name is Solleil (3) and she has an amazingly supportive husband, Jean. They love to spend their summer weekends at their family cottage in Ponemah, Manitoba and they are a huge hockey family in the winter! They also enjoy going for dog walks in the forest during the week with their husky.

Fun Facts:
Favourite Metal: Yellow Gold
Favourite Stone: Sapphire (so many ranges of colours)
Favourite type of repair to do: Claw work
Favourite food: Thai, specifically the Green Curry Soup at Magic Thailine
Favourite dessert: A good old strawberry cheesecake at Baked expectations

We are proud to present this cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division for $1581.95 which was raised from our Mother’s Day Gemstone promotion in May 2017!

The weeks leading up to Mother’s Day are always a very special time at Appelt’s. Children who are 12 years or younger can come in with their hard earned toonie and pick out a unique and authentic gemstone for their Mom for Mother’s Day. Picking the perfect gemstone can be tough when there are so many different colours and styles to choose from. Some Mom’s like purple amethyst and other Mom’s like blue topaz. Some Mom’s prefer round gemstones and other Mom’s prefer pear shaped gemstones. Luckily our staff at Appelt’s love to help find the perfect, special gemstone for Mom. And once the gemstone has been picked, we carefully wrap the gemstone in a special package so it’s all ready for Mom to open up on Mother’s Day. In many cases, the gemstone if often the child’s first purchase that they have ever made so we are thrilled to be part of that very special moment.

The gemstone promotion for Mother’s Day is very special for many different reasons but the best part of all is that all proceeds go the Canadian Cancer Society. “The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer”. To learn more, please visit the Canadian Cancer Society website: http://www.cancer.ca/en/about-us/our-mission/?region=mb#ixzz4kfa6zfgN

We want to send out a HUGE thank you to all the children that earned and donated their $2.00 to the Canadian Cancer Society this past May! Each and every dollar is going towards eradicating cancer and enhancing the quality of life of people living with Cancer in Canada.

There is nothing more precious than seeing someone you love come through a trying situation and be the overcomer you knew they were. In the middle of chaos, not being able to see a way out, but from your perspective its an opportunity waiting to be taken ahold of.

Its like they are trying to find the switch to a lamp in a dark room. They know it is there but cannot find it, even when it is right beside them. But you see it, and continually tell them how close they are. Anxiety.

Our lives are riddled with friends, family members, maybe even a spouse or a child who deal with it everyday. It makes no sense to those who do not have it or haven’t had to help a loved one navigate it’s treacherous ups and downs. Irrationally it will pull them to a dark place that you cannot help them out of.

Ashley knows this all too well.

A dear friend named Lisa lost her dad after only reconnecting a couple years earlier. Her Grandparents who cared for her like parents both died shortly after that. A failing relationship with a mentally unhealthy mom. On top of all that, Lisa and her husband are trying to cope with not being able to get pregnant.

It became so overwhelming she could not breathe at times. Ashley felt led one day to buy her a Giving key. The one with the word BREATHE etched on it. As Ashley placed the key around her neck, and the BREATHE giving key sat on her chest right near her heart; tears began to run down her face and she said: “I feel like I can breathe again!”

Lisa wears this key every day to remind her to “breathe”, anytime life’s stress comes her way which could lead to her anxiety.

The Giving Keys is an amazing way of giving back and paying it forward.
