Grab This! There are a lot of sad stories and charities that tug at your heartstrings and purse-strings, but a story featuring Ukraine Orphans with Down Syndrome being placed in a mental institution with adults at the ages of 4 and 5 really got to me. As much as I'd like to be able to adopt one of these children, I'm not at a place in my life where I can. There are lots of ways to help Reece's Rainbows Adoption Ministry help these children without adopting or giving money on their site, but if you are able there are contacts for that on their website as well. Reece's Rainbow has a page on Facebook, Twitter, and Blogger, too.

Honor Society, once a warm up act 2 years ago for The Jonas Brothers, is now joining the Salvation Army for the second time on the "Rock The Red Kettle" tour.
See the link above for more info on the tour. Not only are the band members of Honor Society helping rase awareness for the Salvation Army's Kettle Campaig, but the Salvation Army blog states that they frequently volunteer and make surprise visits at their centers. Volunteering at centers in your area, donating and buying items at the thrift stores, going to a concert on this tour, volunteering to ring a bell for donations or even setting up an online kettle are ways that you can help the Salvation Army help others in need. You can also donate to Salvation Army through my online kettle.

As reported by CBS News, Prince William was seen dancing at a charity event for a homeless shelter. He and his wife Kate had attended the event on December 21st, 2011. Centrepoint had been one of the late Princess Diana's favorite causes and now is among Prince William's favorite causes, as well.

Creative Giving Challenge #3:An Extra Week-What Will You Do?

Occasionally a year will have 53 Weeks, but most have 52 to 52 and a half. I just looked at the calendar on my cell phone today and it listed 53 full weeks. Granted that the 53rd comes between Christmas and New Year's Eve, how will you spend your extra week? You could spend a few hours of the week volunteering at a local charity or have an extra week to send donations in in time for an IRS deduction. These are a few ideas. Most folks will be busy celebrating the holidays and entertaining friends and family- My challenge is not to spend the whole week volunteering or donating but at least a few hours or even 1 day of the week. We don't often get extra time, but here is one of the ways that we do. Remember that when I challenge you-I also challenge myself. So what will you do? I'm not sure what I will do yet. Please let me know in the comments.How have you done with the past 2 challenges/ Did you finish them? It's okay if you didn't do them on time- but these are projects to inspire you and me to give more. I didn't finish the last one. I've had a really bad cold for nearly a week- but I'm going to catch up when I'm feeling better.

In the latest episode of Extreme Home Makeover, the crew helps a family not only with a new home, but to take a stand against bullying. The Walker's son was a young bullying victim. They joined the movement "Stand Together" to fight against bullying. You can join the effort, too, by going to http://www.standtogether.tv/ . When you register, they will give you a number in a pdf file. Then you take a picture of yourself with your number and upload it to the site. Kids and others are bullied for a variety of reasons; size(being either larger or smaller than their peers), race, gender, sexual orientation, and other various reasons. Most experts say that the reason someone bullies another person is that it gives the bully a temporary feeling of being superior .

` If there is a nursing home, children's home, or a home for children with special needs, consider "adopting " them this season as a family, group or individual(not in a literal sense). Then, visit them and consider giving a small gift such as socks or something else(first check with the center as to what they are allowed to have)
If you are in a church choir, ask the choir director if the group can go caroling at a local nursing or children's home.
The Ronald McDonald House collects tabs from Coke cans. Consider saving those and dropping them by your local Ronald McDonald House when you have a substantial amount.
If you knit, crochet or do any type of sewing; there are charities in need of your skills; for abandoned babies, for US troops, and other charities

Between the investigation against Jerry Sandusky and new allegations against Wycleaf Jean for misappropriating funds meant for his charity to help Haiti(check out Jean's defense here); it's a wonder anyone is willing to trust or donate to a charity again. Still, there are great causes and charities that are trustworthy. Checking them out on sites such as Charity Navigator may help prevent falling victim to charity scams.

A. What is your favorite charity(name and describe the charity and what it does)?. If you have volunteered there and have video or photos and permission to use them, that might help. If you use music- make sure it is copyright free and royalty free.
B. Why did you choose this charity?
2. Post the video to this post comments or you cam email it to ccolhimc@gmail.com with the subject "ApplaUSe4ACause Video Contest” with the link ato the video and your, name, email address and website address.
3. Contest entry is limited to the residents of the continental United States. Sorry. Contest is open from now until Deccember 31st, 2011. The 3 best videos will be announced by January 7th, 2012.
4. The three winners will receive: A. Mention of their name and website in a blog post on ApplaUSe For A Cause, B. Their video will be shown in the post mentioned above, C. Free publicity for their charity, and D. 1 custom ApplaUSe For A Cause mouse pad per winner- made by Cafe Press.

Penny Missions -Easy Fundraiser

One way to raise money with a small to midsize group is with a "penny mission." I did this before with a church for a children's home run by our denomination. The girls competed against the guys(the children did it with some help from adults) and the winning team got served dinner by the losing team. We did this over a few months and raised over 300 dollars in a small church. Everybody has pennies or coins so it was easy to get donations. Money was collecrted and added up each week. At first, I counted each week-then let the bank count the pennies later. A little goes a long way. I know a friend online who is an individual saving money for the National Inclusion Project.

Give The Gift of Life- Donate Blood

You can make a huge difference or even save a life by donating your blood to am area blood bank, like Chattanooga's Blood Assurance or American Red Cross. If your religion doesn't permit it or you can't give due to medical reasons-you can donate funds to the Red Cross or encourage others to donate. Check out the Red Cross website to see if you're medically eligible to donate. I was surprised to learn that my having diabetes doesn't exclude me from donating blood as long as my levels are in control. I was given a transfusion after birth due to a Rh factor incompatibility.

Music That Moves The World

Since I was a teen in the 1980s, I heard a lot of music that was written and recorded to promote giving to charity, such as We Are The World and Band Aid's music. But these haven't inspired me to give or be a better person as have "Man In The Mirror" by Michael Jackson, "Seed To Sow" by Michael W. Smith and a small number of other songs. Music has a way of reaching to our soul and affecting how we think. It can be used for good and for bad.

Before you cook that turkey for Thanksgiving or plan your Black Friday Christmas shopping, go to your kitchen and prepare to raid your refrigerator and pantry. Go to the pantry first with an empty cardboard box and put any canned goods that you don't plan to use in the next 2 months. This food is to be given to your local food pantry. Once the box is full, label it and put it in the back seat or trunk of your car and take as soon as possible to your nearest food bank. You can find your closest food bank at Feeding America's website.The next part of "..your mission should you decide to accept it...,"

is to raid your refrigerator. Be sure to get rid of any food in your fridge or freezer that you suspect might be bad and throw it out! This time go through your food and check to see if it can be used in a casserole or other recipes that you can cook and freeze ahead and take to a sick fruend or neighbor , or to an elderly friend who might need company and a good meal, or to a funeral or other occasion. If you find some odd ingredients, many recipe websites such as Krafts, Allrecipes, and food,com have a search by ingredient feature. Go and let me know what happens!

These days, most folks are inundated with more pleas to give to charity than they can handle unless they're a mega millionaire! From letters, emails, tweets, Facebook and blog :D posts, to cell and house phone calls. If you are getting a lot of cell and phone calls for charity, Charity Watch has an article you might want to see. I just hope my blog is an encouragement to give and is not bothersome. As much as I'd like to give, sometimes I have to say no due to a limited income. In a fantasy, or if I won the lottery; I'd love to do more-but you can only do your part and encourage others to give, also. There are lots of other "tips" on the
site, also.

Bullying has existed for ages in the schools, but the kids of this age who bully can hurt their victims not just at school but at home through Facebook and other social media(excellent tools if they are used properly). Kids and others pick on other children for a variety of reasons: size(big and small), gender, sexual orientation, religion, race and many other reasons. This week, and in recent times, victims of bullying have taken their own lives. The federal government has a website- StopBullying.gov and a campaign to help end bullying and provide help or ways to help others for kids, young adults, teens, parents and the community.

Sparked is an online volunteering site that you can sign in with Facebook. I found out about this site through the Charity Ideas blog. When you sign up for the site, you select the types of charities that you are interested in(i.e. Environment or Youth) and your skills(blogging, videos, art and etcetera) and then you are presented with various challenges, from reviewing a charity's letter or blog to posting videos or blogs or artwork for a particular charity. The other members give thumbs up and thumbs down to your responses and the charity makes the final decision for what best suits them. It's a convenient way to give without even leaving your house(with the exception of a few charities).
