Just a quick post today....

I know I have been doing a lot of non crochet crafts lately, but that is just because I am trying to give my hands a rest. They have seem to be hurting more and more when I crochet. But with that said at least once a week I am still working on my small granny square scrap blanket. I really need to count how many squares I have now. I am sure, I still don't have nearly enough.

It's a HOT Mess

And not because it was over 100 degrees outside this weekend.

I work part time at a YMCA, and this time of year, there are children everywhere, all the time! The Y has camps all summer long, and with camps, there are craft supplies. I was like to rummage through them (as I usually do when I get bored) to see what they have and what the kiddos are making. I came around a plastic bag of....well of a HOT MESS! Take a look and judge for yourself.

Yeah, that's what I said! This picture really doesn't do it justice, it was worse than it looks.

I had a few hours to burn since apparently no one wanted to come out in the heat to workout so I dove right in and got to work....untangling.

Once I got some of it done, I needed some way to get it organized and possibly prevent it from happening again.

I found some old pieces of card stock, and cut them into little squares, and then cut a little slit on the one side.

Then I just cut little notches out of each side, so then it kind of looked like an "I".

Kind of like the ones you buy in the store, only not as neat LOL but a lot cheaper, and just as effective.

I worked on it for a couple of hours on Friday....

Recruited some help from a co worker on Saturday afternoon (when I went back to work), and finished it up.

Yeah, I was pretty proud of myself at this point.

I had a lot of short pieces that I just tossed, and I had to double up on some of the colors, because I ran out of cards.

When I went into work yesterday (my daughter had swim practice) I saw them sitting on high on a shelf totally away from the kids (along with the beads that I sorted the weekend before -I get bored)...LOL...I guess they don't want them to mess it up again.

It's SUMMER! and this is the summer hair style. It took about 3 hours to do, but it will last about 4-6 weeks. She loves it becasue she can WHIP HER HAIR BACK AND FORTH. :)

Summer Writing

I'm still on my summer learning kick for my daughter, I went online and found (Pinterest, duh) a lot of different creative writing prompts. I printed and cut them up into long strips and folded them up.

Uh, now I need somewhere to store them...I'm sure I have a container laying around somewhere...LOL

Yep, a Pringles can...it's one of the short ones.

Grabbed some scrapbook paper (this one is called DOODLE, thought it was fitting) and my little paper cutter. I also got these cute precut flowers from Michael's clearance dollar bins, I think I paid 40 cents for it.

I was going to glue the paper to the container, but double sided tape was so much easier and faster. And I'm all about fast and easy... That didn't sound right :)

Pretty cute, huh?

All of the slips of paper fit inside perfectly

Layered the flower (which was easy considering I had all the pieces in one package) and stuck it on the center of the container.

I even added a little ribbon around it.

Another container redo under my belt. :) I think it is so cute, that my daughter wan to write, so she can use the container. Score one for Momma.

My daughter competed in her first Triathlon....she came in 4th (and her number was 4....must be lucky). Bless her little heart,when he finished they told her that she is now a Triathlete. She sid oh o, how can I even be something I can't pronounce! It is so funny to hear hr try to say it. I think her brother is rather proud too.

Container Freak

Yep, that's me! Even name a board about it, like to see it, here it is... It's a Pinterest Board, of course.

It is pretty bad, I keep all kinds of boxes, and containers, and if it has a lid, I am definitely keeping it. I have shelves in the garage, with containers lined/stacked up on them. If we need to put something in something, I usually have it covered. My daughter regularly has to reel me back in from buying random baskets and such. LOL Which brings me to the topic of this day. Ever heard of Birch Box? Well it's this cool "club" like thing, basically you fill out a short survey, pay $10 a month (actully they have different plans to choose from) and they send you samples of different products. This month is my second shipment, but they both had things in them that I had never heard of, or would have never bought on my on. So that is pretty cool! When I opended it up, I was so excited about the box, I wasn't even thinking about the items that was inside.

It's a small box, but it is made out of really sturdy cardboard....and it has a lid. KEEPING IT! :)

Moving right along.... One day while I was out on a "I'm bored, let's go to Target" trip....I found these cool products called Kid Made Modern (Todd Oldham) They had a whole line of stuff...paint, brushes, paper, duct tape, painted tape. What? Painted tape... yes, and it came home with me. I had no idea what I was going to do with it, but....

Nine rolls, 20 feet long, and 3/4 in wide. I bet you can see where this is headed, right? Plain-ish box. colorful sticky strips....done and done. LOL

Cute huh?

Birch Box gets Colorful makeover. Not sure what the heck I have got on it, who knows, it's still cute. I figure they will make a nice gift box for someone. Well, off to cover another box.

Made My Day

I came home yeserday from getting my hair cut, and my dughter handed me this:

LOL...and if that wasn't enough, she lead me to the kitchen where she gave me this:

Totally made my day! She (my daughter) took little crackers and made me peanut butter sandwiches (I ate them at lunch today). I kept waiting for her to ask me for something (usually that's how it works), but she never did, this time it was just becasue. :)

Anyway, School is out, but we still have to stay on top of reading and writing...math too! The teacher sent home a list of 247 high frequency words from the past school year...yeah 247.

She took a test on these words at the beginning of the school year (well the bginning for her, she changed schools in September). The ones highlighted in yellow are the ones she missed, then they took it again in January, the one with checks are the ones she got right the second time. I think she ended up with only 13 that she missed both times.

So I decided so make flashcards! I found these index cards at Office Depot, already cut in half. I wish I could say that I cut them myself, but....the uncut ones were $1.57 and the cut ones were $1.87. Thirty cents was so worth it. LOL

So I got out the hole punch, one of those binder ring thingys, and a sharpie (not pictured) and went to work. Good time waster, and crazy simple.

I even gave it a front and back cover. Had to give it a cute factor :)

I added blank cards on the end to add words that she misspells when she is doing her creative writng (more on that later this week)

Even More Bracelets

My son graduated from high school a couple of weeks ago..YAY!!

And of course his sister never misses a moment to get her pose on...LOL

She's so stinking cute! Notice those cute bracelets and earrings she's rockin"? Here, let me give you a closer look....

Button bracelets,and some colored tiny woodedn beads we found laying around.

We had a few extra beads,so I made them into earrings for her.

I used clear elastic string for all the bracelets, the hardest part about the button bracelets, was making sure I put them on facing the same direction....

Wooden Bead Necklace

So I still seem to be on my jewerly kick! This ime it's not just a bracelet...

The other day I pulled out this really cute bracelet and earring set to wear..and realized that I didn't have a necklace to match. I had a couple of necklaces wth wood beads on them, but not an all wood one.

Light bulb!! I remember I had bought some wood beads for another project (that was an epic fail), dug them out along with a wood finish stain marker (you know the kind you use to cover up the dings in the wood furniture?). Here is what the beads looked like before I "stained" them:

I literally just colored them and let dry. It took a couple of days for the smell to go away :) Then I use some beadig wire (also from my stash) two small clear beads between the crimp bead and the woden ones. The hole in the wood beads it pretty big, I didn' want them sliding over the top of the crimp bead, hence the reason or the small clear ones. Added a clasp, and done. Here is the end result:

Cute, right?

It turned out great. And is a very near match for the other two pieces.

I love it!

New Bracelets

I am such a bracelet junkie....although I only wear them in the warm weather months. There's something about long sleeves and a bracelet, that gets tucked under, and is never seen, that bothers me. :-)

So my first bracelet day of the year was Saturday, and that just got me in the mood to make more. Because clearly I don't have enough. hahaha!

And of course being all about some Pinterest, I saw and pinned this, and figured it could just be make a smaller version for a bracelet.

About a year ago I bought a ton of these beads on clearance for about 50 cents each and I had plenty of thread leftover from making ruffled socks for my daughter (I will have to show those on another day). I was ready! In her tutorial, I think she made single strands and then grouped them together....but I was being super (and I mean super) lazy yesterday, so when I got the first strand done, I realized the scissors where on the other side of the room, and I didn't wanna get up to get them....I know, I know... #don'tjudgeme :-) Anyway, it actually worked out great. I just slipped stitched back and started a new strand. So all of my strands are connected to each other.

This picture is rather crappy, sorry

The only clasps I have on hand are sliver, so I had to go into Michael's to get some more.
I really like the way they turned out, so much so, I think I am going to make more.

These pictures really don't do them justice.

I found this purple thread in my stash, and these beads at Wal Mart for a buck!

Here is what I did:

Add 100 beades to the thread (if you want more strands, add more beads in the beginning)

Chain 8

Add 1 bead, chain 1, until I had 20 beads (I have super tiny wrists, so small in fact that I can not wear bangles...ever. All my bracelets are the elastic ones, like I'm a kid). You will probably need to add more

Chain 8

Slip stitch down the other side 8 stitches

Add 1 bead, chain 1, until I had 20 beads

Slip stitch down the side 8 stitches, turn and slip stitch downt he other side 8 stitches

And repeat

I had some of the orange and yellow yarn left over from the dish towel, so I decided to make a potholder to match.

It took me a few tries to get the hole the way I wanted it, but finally I got it close to how I was picturing it in my head. It's hard to tell in the picture, but I used the Waffle stitch (and a size F hook). Here is a close up:

Popsicles....

I'm a pinterest junkie (like almost everyone else, rght?). I pin and pin and pin.....Every once in a while, I actually try out one of those pins. :)

This one is pretty simple, and looked really cool. So here is my take on it.

1.Went to Walmart and bught some Capri Suns (well, the Walmart version) and some strawberries. I didn't want to but a bunch of different fruits and then the thing turn out gross. Although I guess we could have just eaten the fruit alone. LOL

2. Walmart had these popsicle makers for $1.99.

3. I cut up the strawberries and dropped them into the the holder...I only used one and a half juice pouches, so we will be able to make plenty more.

4. The fruit was trying to float to the top. But once I added the tops, it kind of pushed it back down.

5. Had to run them under hot tap wate to loosen it up, and then they popped right out.

6. I used regular popsicle sticks for a couple of them, I figured my 17 year old didn't wanna be walking around with the colorful sippy straw handle.

7. Notice the ones that had the sippy hande kept the fruit down better.

As soon as she got in the car from school, the first thing out of her mouth was, "We need to hurry home for those popsicles." She really liked it!

My son (and I), were a little undecided. We determined later that the odd taste may have been the flavor combination. Also he doesn't like strawberries. I did make one without any fruit in it, and he said that it was really good.

Okay, so I finished the dish towel! It took longer because I thought I was going to have to order more yarn. Then one day I was going through a bag that had been living in the car forever and found two more balls of that color....along with a project that I started last fall and never finished. Anyway, I was able to finish without spending any more money. Yay Me!

It was looking a bit wonky so I decided to actually block it. I have never ever blocked anything before. I always wondered if it actually makes a real difference. Well, and I'm pretty lazy when it comes to that kind of "after the fact" work, so if I can get away without doing anything extra.... This time I figured I would give it a try. I had read around the web about it, so I had some kind of idea about what to do....not really :)

I had no idea if I should use a few pins or a lot of pins... I went with a lot. Pinned it to the mattress, sprayed it down (wasn't sure how wet to make it), and walked away. That night I went back and it was dry....hmmmm....I thought it was supposed to take longer, guess I didn't make it wet enough. Oh well, I unpinned it, and couldn't believe how much better it looked. The stitches looked great, the shaped was way less wonky. It made me happy. :)

I think I might start blocking everything now.

I'm a believer!

Duct Tape And A Little Magic

Not that kind of Magic, this kind:

It's a card game that my son plays. Some days, he will randomly send me a text from school saying that he and some friends are playing and that he is winning. Of course my reply text is always...."What class are you in right now?" It's usually something like Pottery or Keyboarding so I just let it go. :)

Anyway, the box that they came in was pretty worn out from being carried around in his pocket,so he asked me to make him a new one. It always cracks me up, that my kids think I can make anything. After I gave it some thought, I took the box apart and traced it onto a file folder, folded it up, and then added duct tape to make it sturdy.

I didn't put a top on it at first. That took another day to decide how I wanted it to close. I cut the top flap out separately and covered it in duct tape, the added it to the box. Attached Velcro dots, and it was done.

I probably could have done a better job at hiding the seams, but oh well.

My son seems to be happy with it!

It's safe to assume that purple is my favorite color. The square container holds paper clips, the little round one has change in it (for the vending machine), and if you look in the back where the markers are, you can see my diamond encrusted (gumball machine) ring HAHAHA. Oh and YES, there is a Zebra hugging my tape. I found him at a thrift store many moons ago!

What I'm Working On Now

Nothing major these days. I had been thinking bout making a dish towel after I saw this post. I have one (store bought) that I use all the time, literally wash an reuse, and it shows....this is well over due.

I originally was going to use a waffle stitch, but then I saw this,and really liked the way it looked. So I just aded a few more chains and went to work. Color choice...well again I already had two-ish balls of this orange yarn, so why not, right? It's Knitpicks Shine Sport in Cementine, and I think I will trim it with the yellow up in the corner of the above photo. It is also Knitpicks, Comfy in Crème Brulee. I think I might run out....bummer....I will have to order more yarn. LOL

I also pick out my yarn for my next amigurumi project. It was on sale for $1 each!

I basically got one o each color hey had left (except the creme, I already had that one) then I was back in the store for something else and added a couple of more colors.

I think I can name them all: Soft Ecru, Hot Green, Light Blue, Hot Orange, Hot Blue, Mod Green, Lavender (Scents), Yellow, and Hot Pink. Dang, that was some work, I don't have the yarn with me while I'm doing this post. Anyway....kind of excited to get started o his one.
