New iPad Air: Lighter, thinner 9.7-inch tablet weighs just 1 pound, arrives Nov. 1 (CNET REVIEW )

Apple announced the iPad Air, its fifth-generation iPad, October 22 in San Francisco at thecompany's annual unveiling event. Thinner, lighter, and with a more powerful processor, the 9.7-inch iPad Air with Retina Display brings some design and performance enhancements to the best-selling tablet, but not as many additions as we had hoped for, or as rumors suggested.

In fact, we'd say that Apple missed some opportunities to wow us with a tablet that could have perhaps had a larger screen with higher resolution, a higher-megapixel camera, or laptoplike accessories. At the very least, this was Apple's chance to recapture its spirit of innovation and give us something different, rather than what amounts to a polished iteration of what we already had.

For instance, there's no gold-hued version as with the iPhone 5S, and Apple mentioned nothing about incorporating the Touch ID fingerprint sensor that uses biometric data to unlock the phone and approve purchases. Also, by keeping many key specs on par with last year's model, Apple's full-size iPad and iPad Mini are now more similar than ever, except that the Mini costs $100 less.

Design and in-hand feel
From the moment you first pick it up, the iPad Air's weight and slimness are two of its most significant new features. Tipping the scale at just 1 pound, the iPad Air's heft is down from the 1.44 pounds of the fourth-generation iPad. It also measures an extremely thin 7.5 millimeters (0.29 inch), as opposed to the predecessor's 9.4mm depth (0.37 inch) -- that's a 20 percent slimmer build, if you're keeping count. The bezel is also much narrower, too; 43 percent so, in fact.

A tablet's heft plays a crucial role in how quickly your arms tire holding it. In this update, Apple has managed to reduce its hardware's weight by almost half a pound, an impressive feat that you're only likely to notice because you hardly notice it at all. In fact, even though we knew the specs, nothing can prepare you for how light and slim the iPad Air actually feels in real life.

The weight makes it much easier to hold with one hand, and the pared-down bezel makes the screen absolutely pop. Our first impression: the iPad Air is like the iPhone 5S of iPads: refined, reduced, and overall improved.

Performance and other hardware
A new A7 chip inside makes the Air eight times faster than the iPad 4, according to Apple. For reference, this is the same 64-bit chip populating the iPhone 5S. Like Apple's latest smartphone, the Air's A7 also comes with the M7 motion coprocessor, which promises graphics that render at twice the rate of the previous iPad.

In terms of graphics, that means that this iPad Air is 72 times faster than the original iPad in GPU performance, but who's counting? All that really matters is how it stacks up against today's top tablet performers (and more on that to come when we actually get review units in-house.)

In terms of Wi-Fi, there's MIMO wireless technology onboard, but the Air is using the 802.11n standard, not the the more current "ac" Wi-Fi designation.

We're sorry, but nobody looks cool taking photos with a tablet. However, if you must (and it's quite possible that your tablet contains the best camera you own), then the iPad Air has a 5-megapixel iSight camera on the rear that Apple says takes improved low-light shots. On the front, video-chatters will find the refreshed FaceTime HD camera, which gives you larger pixels to make images look clearer, according to the claim. Dual microphones will help capture even sound.

Apple is always cagey when it comes to sharing battery capacity details, but the company does list a 32.4-watt-hour rechargeable lithium battery, and promises to keep up its 10-hour battery life rate on the Air.

On the software front, free and redesigned versions of core Apple apps -- like iPhoto, iMovie, Keynote, and GarageBand -- have been reworked for iOS 7 and the iPad.

iPad Air or iPad Mini 2?
With the iPad Mini 2's Retina Display and updated specs, the iPad Air becomes a little less dominant in this space. Its similarity to the $399 iPad Mini with Retina Display makes us wonder if Apple is cannibalizing iPad sales for the smaller, cheaper device.

Are you willing to pay $100 more for a larger screen? Yeah, you might be, if you value more expansive screen real estate and rely on that virtual keyboard.

As with past models, the iPad will come in both Wi-Fi and cellular versions that support LTE.

The iPad Air ships November 1 in space gray and black, and silver and white colors (but no gold, sorry). Prices start at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi version, with the cellular model coming in at $629. In addition to a wave of other first-release countries, it's coming to China with Wi-Fi, a first for Apple.

BlackBerry’s Good News On BBM Android/iOS Downloads (10M In A Day)

Timing is everything. Too early and your product will shrivel; too late and it will be overlooked no matter how shiny. Just ask BlackBerry — a company with spectacularly bad timing in recent memory. A string of hesitations and bad decisions made the BlackBerry maker too late to the mobile party again and again.

Clinging stubbornly to old QWERTY keyboard habits left its hardware out of touch — literally — when it came to competing with Android and iOS, and allowed RIM to delay the necessary refocusing of its mobile platform for too long. That next-gen platform arrived eventually in BlackBerry 10, but the BlackBerry faithful had already mostly departed for pastures new, leaving the company with a load of unsold BB10 handsets and a $965 million hole in its books.

That story is so much water under the bridge now, as the company appears to be on the point of break-up, shopping itself around to potential buyers. But its bad sense of timing persists. Old habits die hard.

The latest case in point is a small example, but a telling one nonetheless. BlackBerry finally started rolling out its BBM messaging client to iOS and Android yesterday — weeks later than originally planned, after a botched earlier attempt. And years late from a market point of view. If BBM had launched on Android and iOS back in 2010, how many users might it have now? And how many might mobile messaging giants like WhatsApp not have?

Yesterday was also the day Apple selected for its October iPad launch event. This date has been circulating as near-certified rumour since early October and had been officially confirmed since October 15. Yet despite that highly unfortunate marketing clash — a David and Goliath one when you’re going up against the hyperdrive of the Cupertino marketing machine — BlackBerry went ahead with its rescheduled BBM launch anyway. Why, BlackBerry, why?

Turns out there is still appetite for BlackBerry’s veteran messaging client — or at least people curious enough to take a look. But that story didn’t get a decent airing yesterday. The iPad Air stole its oxygen.

Into this attention vacuum, BlackBerry tweeted yesterday that BBM for iOS and Android had had 5 million downloads eight hours after launch. This was followed up by another official announcement saying BBM downloads had exceeded 10 million within 24 hours of its release. And that it had become the No. 1 free app in more than 75 countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Indonesia and “most of the Middle East.”

It’s just a shame that BlackBerry decided to bury this flicker of relatively good news under a tsunami of Apple-related PR. Once more unto the terrible timing breach.

Ten million downloads in a day isn’t bad. For BlackBerry it’s spectacular good news — the kind of news the company has been lacking for years. So squandering the impact of having something positive to say for once seems like a seriously wasted opportunity.

Of course 10 million downloads does not mean BBM is alive and kicking, even as the company that created it heads for the breakers yard. The key test will be how many of those downloads turn into sustained usage. For some context, mobile messaging giant WhatsApp has some 300 million monthly active users, for instance, while Chinese messaging app WeChat has circa 190 million MAUs.

Mobile messaging is now a very packed and fiercely competitive space, being attacked by giants like Facebook, as well as startups of all stripes. BBM’s 10 million downloads in a day is therefore a win, but a very small one. How many monthly active users would BBM have had on Android and iOS if it had launched three years ago?

It’s such timing-related questions that will haunt the company’s founders for years to come.

One more thing: BlackBerry is having to ration access to BBM — presumably so its servers don’t fall over again — meaning that people who have downloaded the app have to wait in a queue for an email notification before they can start using it.

Really, you can’t make this stuff up.

A Few things of New iOS 7 Users Should Know

At long last, iOS 7 has arrived. That is, it arrived for everyone who didn’t say “Developer? Oh, yeah, I’m totally a developer. Cough” and wiggle into the Beta months ago.

iOS 7 is a strange new land, especially on day one. Out with the gradients, in with the trippy fluorescents. Your favorite app? It probably looks completely different now.

It can be confusing, but we’re here to help. iOS 7 has all sorts of nifty little tricks tucked away in places that are in no way immediately obvious, especially if you haven’t followed Tim Cook’s every word along the way.

If you’ve been using iOS 7 for a while, you might know some of these. Hell, you might know most of these. But we tried to cover the bases to make sure that most people learn a thing or two. (Know all of these? You’re way cool, high five. Share another trick down in the comments!)

Swipe Down For Search:

Gone are the days of having to swipe or tap your way to iOS’ dedicated search page. You can now access Spotlight search from anywhere on the homescreen. Just swipe down in the middle of the screen.

You can use Spotlight to quickly search across your device’s apps, emails, and contacts — but curiously, it seems that Apple has removed Spotlight’s ability to search the web. I’m pretty sure I never actually used that, but this is the Internet so I’m supposed to complain now that it’s gone.

Swipe Up For Toggles:

Toggles! At last!

Fixing what is perhaps one of iOS’ most glaring, long-lasting omissions, iOS 7 puts one-click access to things like Airplane mode and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth toggles just one swipe away, instead of hiding them in settings.

To get to the new Control Panel, just swipe up from the bottom of the screen anywhere you might be. You’ll get buttons for Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, Orientation lock, and sliders for brightness and media control. Oh, and there’s a flashlight in there. So if you were thinking about building a dedicated flashlight app, now is probably not a good time.

(Pro tip: The control panel is available from the lockscreen. Also: if the control panel is sliding out and interrupting your Candy Crushin’ time, you can block it from sliding out while in an app in your settings.)

Reveal iMessage and SMS Timestamps:

iOS has always been kind of weird about telling you when a message was sent or received. It’ll tell you when somemessages came through — but only if it’s the first one that’s come through in a while in a given thread. If you sent a bunch of messages around 12:45, for example, you’d normally only get that first 12:45 timestamp.

With iOS 7, you can reveal the timestamp for each and every message. Just grab one of the speech bubbles in a thread and swipe to the left. Tada! Timestamps! Never argue about exactly when a message was sent again! (Because, yeah, I’ve had those arguments. Seriously. Sigh.)

Built-In Level:

Building a house boat? Hanging a picture? Just want to show off one of the stranger new tricks that your iPhone has picked up?

iOS 7 has a built-in bubble level, of all things. I thought it was a pretty strange addition at first… but then I found myself using it one day. Then again the next.

To get to the level, open the compass app. Though not immediately obvious, there’s a second page to the app; swipe to the left, and you’ll be at Apple’s level.

(Pro tip: Double-tapping the screen resets the level to consider whatever angle the phone is currently at to be 0°. That design choice, expressed through a series of colored flashes, isn’t super intuitive.)

Swipe To Close Safari Tabs:

Safari has a new, scrolling 3D tab interface that allows for just about as many tabs as you want.

Alas, these tabs also have new, tiny “X” buttons that make closing them quickly a bit of a pain.

Forget the X button — it’s for chumps. Swipe the tabs away to the left, instead. It’s a whole lot faster, and requires less precision when you’re trying to dump a bunch of tabs on the go.

Call/SMS/Facetime Blocking:

“Surely, there’s got to be a way to block phone numbers,” said every iPhone user ever.

Really, just type “How to b” into Google and let it autocomplete. First result? “How to block a number.” Second result? “How to block a number on iPhone.” Third result? “How to be happy.” This feature is in greater demand than happiness! Happiness!

Yet, until now, there hasn’t really been an easy way.

With iOS 7, it’s finally a pretty straightforward process to block people from calling, messaging, or FaceTime-ing (FaceTiming? Facing? Agh.) you. You can find the block list at either Settings > Phone > Blocked; Settings > Messages > Blocked; or Settings > FaceTime > Blocked. Note, however, that the block list is universal — block them in the phone settings, and they’re blocked on FaceTime, too.

App-By-App Cell Data Usage/Blockage:

Want to see which app is using up all of your cell plan’s precious megabytes? Want to keep Pandora from streaming unless it’s on Wi-Fi?

Pop into Settings > Cellular and scroll down to the bottom. You can see which apps have used the most cell data and block any app from using cell data at all. (Note: An app needs to have used cell data at least once for it to show up in the list.)

How To Close Apps:

We’ve had a bunch of requests for this one since this post first went up, so here you go.

Apple changed the App Switching/App Closing mechanism up a bit with iOS 7. It used to be that to close an app, you’d double tap the home button, wait for the app drawer to slide out, then press and hold on an icon until the little “X” appeared.

With iOS 7, the whole thing looks and works a bit more like webOS of yesteryear. Double tap the home button to bring up the fullscreen app switcher, which provides a screenshot of each running application in a sideways-scrolling carousel. To close an application, simply swipe the app’s screenshot up and off the screen.

(Note: You really shouldn’t need to close apps all that often. Unless the app has crashed and refuses to fix itself or it’s doing something that is eating your battery, iOS 7 is designed so that most apps use little to no resources when in the background.)

Bonus Tricks:

Folders can now be paged, allowing them to hold a huge number of apps.
Safari still has private-browsing mode, it’s just in the app itself now instead of hidden away in settings. Find the switch in Safari’s tabs screen.
Airdrop, Apple’s much touted system for wirelessly transferring files to other nearby iPhones, only works with the iPhone 5 and later. (I’ve spotted many a 4S user wasting time trying to figure out how the heck to turn it on, when the option simply isn’t there for them. Don’t worry, I wasted a good 10 minutes myself.)
Miss the “List” view in the calendar app? It’s still there, just not immediately obvious. Tap the search icon to bring up a scrollable list.
If you’re into using default ringtones, give Apple’s list another look. They’ve added a bunch of new trancy ringtones and chiptuney text alerts.
Siri has picked up a bunch of new tricks. You can toggle settings (“Turn On Do Not Disturb”), ask for recent tweets (“What is TechCrunch saying?”), show you pictures (“Show me pictures of cats”) pulled from Bing, provide Wikipedia info inline (“Tell me about TechCrunch”), post to Facebook, play back voicemail, list recently missed calls, and find restaurants on Yelp and make OpenTable reservations.
iOS 7 keeps tabs on where you hang out most, allowing it to cache relevant nearby data. It’s neat, if a bit spooky. Once you’ve used iOS 7 for a while, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services to view a list of your frequent haunts. You can also turn this feature off at the same location.

WinterBoard app is simply how you theme anything on your device. One very cool feature with winterboard which many forget about is the ability to stack themes on top of each other. For example i have the ayecon theme placed under iOS Colorful Statusbar and Glasklart battery, as seen in the video.

ayecon is one of the most classy, elegant and subtle themes there is. Introduced in mid 2012 ayecon still seems to be one of the most popular themes of all time.

Zeppelin is very simple, it allows you to change your borring carrier logo. The best feature of zeppelin is how many add on packs there are available,

Double At is a incredibly simple tweak and you might not need it. For what i do with my iPhone on a daily basis this tweak saves me a bunch of time. With double at all you have to do is input your email address in it’s settings panel and whenever you need to type your email just click the @ button twice and it will paste!

With this very simple tweak just download and install it and your done, you can now tap the battery icon to display the percentage. The percentage will vanish on its own after a short while.

Universal Video Downloader

Universal Video Downloader is a very powerful application. This application will give you the option to download and save any video on your device. Use this app at your own risk. Universal Video Downloader works with Netflix, Hulu+, YouTube or ANY video you can watch on your device. The moment you start playing any video you will receive a popup notification asking if you would like to download this video!

Notification Center

NCSettings is an absolute must! A widget packed with toggles and adjusting sliders such as volume, brightness, wifi, 3G, Bluetooth and many more. NCSettings is another one of my absolute most used packages from cydia. You can download this benchmark widget from the modmyi source for free.

NCDate & ncRam for Notification Center are 2 great widgets to have at hand. Also with both widgets you can fully customize the font displayed color, size and style.

FlagPaint

FlagPaint will paint your notification banner background to match the application icon color you are receiving the notification from! It’s just cool looking.

AppCent

Another one of those tweaks created that leaves you thinking… why didn’t apple do this in the first place? AppCent is a no brainer tweak that will display how much an app from the app store has been downloaded instead of a loading bar that states Loading.

Unfold

There are many lockscreen unlock tweaks found in cydia, Unfold is the best in my opinion. You have a few options within it’s settings such as unfolding it horizontally or vertically and how many times it folds.

TypeStatus

Having the replying bubble icon within the messages app when somebody is currently typing to you is very cool, but who is really going to sit in the messages app and wait? TypeStatus will put that icon in your statusbar! Kind of a peace of mind seeing it while you are anywhere on your device, just another tweak that reminds you why jailbreaking is so awesome.

Torch

No more stupid flashlight apps! Torch puts a little lighting bolt icon on your lockscreen, simply tap flash on and now you can see in the dark. One of my most used tweaks ever since it’s release in cydia.

Springtomize 2

Your not a real jailbreaker unless you have Springtomize 2! This is the Swiss Army Knife of jailbreak tweaks. There are so many adjustments you can make to your device with this tweak it’s just crazy. I used springtomize to display my battery on the lockscreen overlaying my wallpaper, instead of the boring stock black background. You can also change icon size, dock layout, slide to unlock text, statusbar elements and much much more!

Barrel

When i try to think back in the day of the iPhone 3GS and iOS 4 jailbreak one tweak always comes to mind, Barrel. It’s a tweak that has been around for a long time, very straight forward allowing you to have animated page scrolling effects.

Auxo

This tweak was a dream come true, the concept art of auxo was brought to attention awhile ago, i believe summer of 2012. I even wrote an article about the auxo concept!

Zephyr

The final epic tweak on this list is Zephyr. With zephyr, for the most part you no longer have to even touch your home button. Zephyr is a swipe gesture based tweak allowing you to close apps by swiping up from the bottom of the page. Also with a swipe up from the bottom of your homescreen zephyr will open your switcher. App switching multitasking with swipes side to side.

Apple Suffers Largest Stock Decline in 11 Months

Apple has suffered its largest stock decline for 11 months amid waning demand for the iPhone 5.

On January 14, shares of Apple decreased to below $500 for the first time since February. The stock did, however, end the day at $501.75. On January 15, though, it settled for a low of $485.92.

The Wall Street Journal recently said sources indicated that Apple reduced screen orders for the iPhone 5 by almost 50 percent due to weakened demand, as well as decreasing component orders.

Back in December, 2012, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich reduced his iPhone sales estimates for the March, June, and September 2013 quarters by 5 million units within each quarter, noting that the company is unlikely to enjoy the same success it experienced during 2012.

Following the iPad 4 and iPad Mini's launch, Apple lost $35 billion in market valuation in what turned out to be its largest share price decrease in four years. Its highest market valuation was over $700 billion, but that figure has been dropping ever since the launch of the iPhone 5.

Nearly six years after the debut of the iPhone, mobile applications are beginning to mature. The best mobile apps of 2012 – with a few notable exceptions – are more about refined practicality rather than anything revolutionary.

So while this year’s list lacks medium-defining breakthroughs like Instagram and Shazam, it showcases new and meaningfully updated apps that simply work better than their competitors. In this age of algorithmic aggregation, we also salute titles that have a decidedly human touch.

Of course, any attempt to rank the “best” apps within any period of time will be questioned and debated. Ask 100 different people to rank their favorites, and you’ll likely get 100 different variations.

The apps we selected were either released or significantly updated between January 1 and December 21 of this year. Titles that debuted on iOS or Android in 2012 that were previously available on another platform are eligible for inclusion. All of our selections were sourced, ranked and finalized by Appolicious advisors and members of our community. In all, about a dozen members of the Appolicious editorial team offered their favorites. We also surveyed the most active and influential users of Appolicious sites and applications. We did not account for the number of app downloads or overall popularity. Our qualitative assessment is based primarily on the production value, utility and creativity baked into each cited application.

Here goes.

Google Maps (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
While Tim Cook was a runner-up to President Obama for Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2012, the app of the year comes from Apple’s primary nemesis. Google Maps was far from broken when Apple, for business reasons, elected to go with its own Map app for iOS 6. When the iPhone 5 came out, users tapping into the iOS 6 Maps app couldn’t see the Statue of Liberty. This was just one of countless Apple Maps fails. Of course, it’s easy to lambaste Apple for laying an egg here. Yet the larger point is that we take for granted the reliability, clarity, and ease of use of Google Maps. This stuff is hard. That is why we are thankful that Apple earlier this month approved a brand-new version of Google Maps for iOS 6 devices. New competition from Apple, which will inevitably improve its mapping capabilities, pushed Google to develop the best map app yet for any device.

Camera Awesome (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad free)
During our mid-year check-in, we had Camera Awesome as the best new app to come out during the first half of 2012. Developer SmugMug is not resting on any laurels. Since that time, Camera Awesome became universally available on all iOS devices and is inspiring many of us to snap pics with our iPads. Camera Awesome – which is superior to the pre-installed iPhone camera and all other third-party photography apps – also integrated with Tumblr. The app’s “1-Tap Share” feature is now accessible with all major social networks.

Slices for Twitter (iPhone, iPod touch $4.99 Android free)
From reading commentary during live news and sporting events, to sharing information about public transportation during Hurricane Sandy, to finding out what your friends are up to this weekend, Twitter in 2012 emerged as a (if not the) primary resource for real-time news and information for mainstream users. With millions of feeds to follow, however, it’s challenging for five-year veterans and newbies alike to keep this vast flow of information organized. While there are many third-party apps that help users categorize who and what they follow on Twitter, Slices is the best one for smartphones right now.

Flipboard (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
The worldwide leader in socially curated news had a busy year after being named our favorite app of 2011. Highlights from 2012 include Flipboard’s arrival on Android devices, YouTube, and Google+ integration, as well as a picture-perfect partnership with the New York Times. I’d argue that it’s better to read all the news that’s fit to print via Flipboard than anywhere else.

Khan Academy (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad free)
Touchscreen devices will revolutionize education in the months and years ahead. In early 2012, Salman Khan took his library of more than 3,500 lesson-specific educational videos to iDevices. The Khan Academy app enables users to easily navigate their way through comprehensive and engaging tutorials on subjects that range from raising venture capital to the Baroque period in art history. Khan Academy also lets users view the transcripts from each lesson, and easily find and drill down on passages that are most insightful.

Songza (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
Audio streaming services like Pandora, Slacker and Spotify are changing the ways in which we consume music. Rather than listening to albums or pre-programmed playlists, we now have access to entire “stations” on our computers and mobile devices built around our favorite artists and songs. This year, the Songza app added a human element to this kind of algorithmic-driven music curation with a major update that showcases playlists created for particular moods or times of day. Best of all, even after hundreds of hours of happy listening, I still haven’t heard an ad on the free service.

Viggle (iPhone, iPod touch, Android free)
You no longer need to feel guilty about wasting the day away curled up on the couch watching television. With the Viggle iPhone app, you can get compensated from the likes of Amazon.com, Starbucks and the Gap merely for watching and checking in to many of your favorite programs. Viggle uses audio recognition technology similar to what is found in apps like IntoNow and Shazam to do much of the work for you. Just sit back and appreciate that you are getting rewarded for doing absolutely nothing.

Brewster Address Book (iPhone, iPod touch free)
Keeping track of all your contacts across email, telephone numbers and social networks is challenging. Brewster is an uber contact-management tool that syncs to your iPhone’s contact list, but also Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail and Foursquare. The app has a simple and visually striking interface that showcases the images and names of your contacts as you scroll across the screen. Brewster will automatically determine your “Favorites” based on activity, and lets you easily search for contacts or create your own distinct lists.

Next Draft – The Day’s Most Fascinating News (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad free)
While there is nothing technologically groundbreaking about this app, which publishes daily email newsletter content from satirist and current events junkie Dave Pell, you will feel smarter and happier after you download it. There are hundreds of apps that let you filter and curate news around your particular interests, but there is only one that compiles 10 of the “Day’s Most Fascinating News” stories with Pell’s unique wit and insight.

Action Movie FX (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad free)
From the production company of producer J.J. Abrams (Lost, Super 8, and the latest iteration of Star Trek) comes this entertaining app, which lets users superimpose special effects into video clips they record with their iDevices. While Action Movie FX suffered from early stability issues and is not really an app you’ll need to use every day, its playful production values and Skywalker-inspired sound effects make it worthy of top billing.

Atlas by Collins (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad $6.99)
The world is at your fingertips with Atlas by Collins. This robust app features satellite mapping images, physical maps, political maps with states and territories marked out, environmental maps, population statistics and even mobile technology and Internet usage maps. Atlas By Collins also features street-level viewing for any location on the map, in-depth country profiles, and 200,000 data points for cities, towns and major natural landmarks.

Crackle – Movies & TV (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
While there were no technological breakthroughs from this Sony-developed video-streaming service in 2012, we salute Crackle for its exclusive programming. In August, Jerry Seinfeld returned to the small screen with his “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” online series that was shown exclusively on Crackle. Netflix and Hulu may be splashier, but neither could show Seinfeld riffing with Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner while eating Chicken in the Pot soup and watching Jeopardy.

Vyclone (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad free)
Vyclone may be the next big video-editing app thanks to its social take on video recording. When users take a video with Vyclone, the app looks for others who are shooting video nearby and then edits the video clips together so the same footage can be seen from multiple angles. Ideal for large events like sports games, events and concerts, Vyclone could create a new socially focused, video-editing standard.

Stitcher Radio (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
Although podcasts don’t have the same pop-culture cachet as apps, the digital audio files are a godsend to talk-radio junkies and anyone who appreciates the spoken word. From past episodes of This American Life and Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! to comedy programs like The Nerdist and WTF with Marc Maron, to long-form interviews from your favorite sports commentators, there are podcasts that appeal to virtually every interest. Regrettably, the Podcasts app that Apple debuted earlier this year is buggy and – if not monitored correctly – can eat up a lot of storage. The best bet for podcast discovery on iOS and Android devices comes from the fifth-generation edition of Stitcher Radio, which rolled out earlier this year.

Highlight (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
Highlight, which alerts you when a Facebook friend or individual with similar interests is in your vicinity, was the most successful app of its kind to emerge from South By Southwest in March. Since that time, Highlight has significantly improved with new features that let users send group messages to those nearby and comment on their friends’ profiles. The app’s notification system is also vastly improved.

Clear (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad $0.99)
What separates Clear from hundreds of other task-management apps are its ease of use and beautiful design. A recent update enables the app to work alongside iCloud, so you can share task lists between your MacBook and iPhone seamlessly. Other newer features include the ability to switch lists quickly, and paste text into Clear and have it auto-format into a list.

Pocket (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
While many were predicting the demise of Pocket with the arrival of iOS 6 and the ability to read articles offline in Safari, the app remains the best “Read it Later” alternative for all iOS and Android devices. Accessing content through the app is a pleasure. Its other features – such as changing text size, sharing through myriad services, and archiving finished content – are simple and intuitive.

Showyou (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad free)
A fully operational Apple TV is at least six months away — likely longer. In the meantime, there are a handful of great video-discovery apps that can be viewed on the big screen thanks to Apple TV and AirPlay Mirroring. Showyou is the best. This year, Showyou completely revamped its iPhone application, making it easy to locate videos shared by Facebook and Twitter contacts, as well as via search and a curated directory. What separates Showyou from its competitors are clever in-app messaging features and a vibrant community.

Paper by FiftyThree (iPad free)
Doodlers and more serious artists alike can embrace this beautifully designed iPad application, also named by Apple as one of the best of 2012. Created by the Microsoft team that brought us Courier, Paper cleverly labels drawing tools by utility (“sketch”) rather than their actual name (“pencil”). There is a lot here that can be enjoyed for free, with extra tools on sale within the app.

Zinio (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android free)
Although Zinio first appeared on iOS devices in 2009, the digital magazine application is more recently pioneering how consumers purchase advertised and editorially curated products on touchscreen devices. A partnership with ShopAdvisor lets readers purchase and learn more about products they are interested in without leaving the page they are reading. Zinio has a roster of more than 5,500 publications that can be read seamlessly across any mobile and desktop device worth owning.

Experiencing Wi-Fi problems in iOS 6? We’ve got a fix

Like other sites, we’ve been getting a lot of tips this evening that Wi-Fi in iOS 6 is acting up. Several of our readers have informed us that their Wi-Fi quit working after attempting to connect to a faulty Apple page shortly after updating to the latest version of iOS.

Don’t worry, the problem has been pinpointed. As explained by developer Steve Streza, iOS devices are programmed to ping a test URL upon connecting to a Wi-Fi network to see if it’s protected by a “captive portal.” And that test page has been down all afternoon…

Here’s more on that from Errata Security:

“When an Apple iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod) connects to a WiFi network, the first thing it does is make a request to the URL http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html.

The purpose of this request is to discover if there is a “captive portal” in the way. A captive portal is when, after connecting to the WiFi, any web request you makes gets redirected to a login/ToS page. In order to continue, you must either login with a username/password (or sign up, then login), and/or access the Terms of Service.”

Anyway, it sounds like Apple was able to correct this issue on their end, so no update will be necessary. But if you’re still having Wi-Fi problems, you can try the following:

Toggle your Wi-Fi off and on – Settings app > Wi-Fi OR
Set your device’s HTTP Proxy to Auto – Settings app > Wi-Fi > Blue icon next to the network you’re connecting to > Scroll to the bottom

How to Copy Your Contacts From Your iPhone to a SIM Card

If for one reason or another you want to copy your iPhone contacts from your phone to your SIM card, you’re pretty much screwed because Apple doesn’t let you do that easily.

When there’s a will, there’s a jailbreak app! It’s called SIManager and it will help you move your contacts from iPhone to SIM.

SIManager is available on Cydia for free from the iSpazio repo. Simply download the app and launch it to get started…

To import your contacts from your iPhone to your SIM card, hit the little settings icon at the bottom, then hit “Copy iPhone to SIM”. All the contacts you have on your iPhone will be backed up to your SIM card.

Now if you want to move these contacts that are on your SIM to your iPhone, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Import SIM Contacts. All the contacts that are on your SIM card will be transferred to your iPhone.

Free and easy!

How to Get Better iPhone 5 Battery Life

The iPhone 5 features a new 4-inch display, 4G LTE data speeds, and a new battery that Apple claims lasts longer than the iPhone 4S despite the larger display and the 4G LTE capabilities. And while iPhone 5 battery life reviews have been mostly positive, there are always ways to improve battery life with the iPhone and we wanted to share some tips about how to get better battery life with the iPhone 5.

The company claimed that the iPhone 5 gets better battery life than the iPhone 4S in its iPhone 5 announcement and initial tests reveal that it gets about the same, if not a little better mileage than the iPhone 4S.

Users are seeing anywhere from 8 to 12 hours of usage with the iPhone 5 and that’s downright impressive for Apple’s first attempt at an 4G LTE smartphone.

We show you how to get more out of your iPhone 5 battery.

And while impressive, there are some things that users can do to help improve the battery life on the iPhone 5. They might not add an extra five hours, but they should help to add some extra minutes, something that is often crucial while on-the-go.

Here are a few tips for improving the battery life on the iPhone 5.

Turn Off Wi-Fi/4G LTE

One of the ways I used to conserve battery life on my iPhone 3GS was by turning off the Wi-FI when I was out and about. This way, the phone wasn’t trying to connect to Wi-Fi networks I wasn’t going to use. With the iPhone 5, users will not only want to turn off Wi-Fi when not using it, but 4G LTE as well.

By turning both of these off when you need them, you’ll be saving yourself some extra battery life.

Fortunately, turning both of these off is quick and easy. For Wi-Fi, head into Settings and at top, you’ll want to click your Wi-Fi network. You’ll be taken to a new menu where you can toggled Wi-Fi On or Off. Switch it to Off.

Toggling off 4G LTE and Wi-Fi will help preserve battery life on the iPhone 5.

To turn off 4G LTE data speeds, head into Settings, then General. Once there, tap Cellular. There, you will see an option for Enable 4G LTE which has a toggle. Toggle it to Off.

Turn Down Screen Brightness

One simple trick that could save you quite a bit of iPhone 5 battery life is turning down the screen brightness. The screen eats up a lot of juice and by toning it down a bit, the strain on the iPhone 5′s battery will ease a bit.

This is simple as well. Go into the Settings on your iPhone 5. From there, you’ll see an option that reads Brightness & Wallpaper. Tap that option and you’ll be taken to a screen that looks like the one below.

By default, it should be around 50% but you have the option to turn it lower or even toggle off Auto-Brightness which will keep your iPhone 5 at a constant level, perfect when you’re in an environment where there is consistent lighting.

Turn Off Location Services/Notifications

While many of the services offered in iOS are extremely useful, they can also eat up battery life when turned on. We recommend shutting down twoof these in particular if you wish to conserve battery life on your iPhone 5.

1. The first, Location Services. Location Services is the feature in iOS that uses GPS and crowd-sourced Wi-Fi to constantly determine your location. This is a particularly useful feature in the Maps application but it also is used by an assortment of other third-party apps. Turning this off could help save battery life.

To do this, first go into Settings. From there, scroll down to Privacy. Tap that and then tapLocation Services at the top. At the top of the next page is a toggle where you can flip Location Services to Off.

2. And second, it’s time to turn off Push Notifications which are the notifications that pop up on your home screen when something happens in one of your apps. For instance, when someone posts something on Facebook.

Go to Settings, then Notifications. You’ll then see a long list of applications to choose from. From here, you can either turn of Do Not Disturb which will disable all Notifications or you can manually turn the ones you don’t care about off when tapping on their name. Personally, I disable just about every single one.

You also might want to think about taking the Stocks and Weather widgets out of Notification Center. To do that, simply click on the appropriate one and toggle Notification Center to Off.

Switch Email to Manual

Another trick I have used in the past is to switch my Mail to manual. What I mean by that is, by default, your iPhone 5 will be fetching new data aka checking for new email automatically. This used to eat up battery on my iPhone so I turned it off, set it to manual and got great results.

To do this, go to Settings. Then, head to Mail, Contacts, Calenders. Scroll down and tap on Fetch New Data. There, you have the option of turning off Push completely if you want but I recommend scrolling down and tapping on Manually.

What this means is that you’ll now have to manually check for email. Fortunately, Apple just made this simple. In iOS 6, you no longer have to tap to refresh email. You just have to pull down and it will check for new mail. A fantastic trade-off for a little more juice.

Restart the iPhone 5

A simple trick to get better battery life is just to restart your iPhone 5 once in awhile to flush its system. If you’re like me, you’ll often leave your device on for weeks maybe even months at a time without restarting it. Just by holding down the power button and turning it off, you may be able to gain back some precious battery life.

Simply hold the power button and Slide to Power Off when it asks you to.

Reset All Settings

Something else to try in order to improve iPhone 5 battery life is resetting all of your settings. This will turn back the clock on your settings without deleting the apps and data found on the iPhone 5.

Reset all settings to get fix battery life issues on the iPhone 5.

To do this, head to Settings. Then, tap on General. Next, scroll to the bottom and tap on Reset. Tap on Reset All Settings. If you’re prompted, enter your Passcode. Wait for the reset to finish then use your phone until it gets down to 0% then shuts off.

Then, plug in your iPhone 5 until it charges to 100%. This should help to solve any battery life issues you’ve been having.

Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode isn’t just useful for when you’re on a flight. It can also be used to save precious battery. By putting your iPhone 5 into Airplane Mode, it will disable all data/cellular related services. That means no data, no phone calls, no texts. This makes it perfect for battery life emergencies.

To turn on Airplane Mode, head into Settings and toggle Airplane Mode to On.

Last Ditch Effort – Restore

If none of these work, there is a last ditch effort that iPhone 5 owners can perform in order to try and resolve battery life issues. Again, this should only be attempted if nothing else has improved your battery life and you’re not getting what you want.

First, you’ll want to make a backup of your iPhone 5 so you don’t have to reinstall all of your applications or move all of your files.

The backup process begins after you plug your device into a computer. If it doesn’t happen automatically, you can force a backup to occur.

Simply go into iTunes, right click on your device, and select Back Up. I recently did this with my iPhone and while it takes a bit of time, it’s going to be necessary for what you do next.

Make sure your device is still plugged in. Then, through iTunes, click your device on the left-hand menu which should being up a screen that looks like the one below.

Click Restore. This will transform your phone into the iPhone 5 it was when it first arrived. No files, no apps, nothing.

Once that is done, you will again want to right click your device in iTunes and you’ll want to selectRestore from Back Up. This should restore your iPhone 5 to the way it was before, apps and all, but with better battery life.

Less than a week after the end of tech extravaganza CES, Asus has quietly launched a new $149 tablet to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7. The Memo Pad features a 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution display, the 1GHz VIA WM8950 CPU, the Mali-400 GPU and runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), while its 4270mAh battery gives an estimated seven hours of battery life.
Internal storage starts at 8GB and goes up to 16GB, with expansion up to 32GB possible through the microSD card slot, while the tablet also comes with 1GB of RAM, a front-facing 1MP camera and supports direct access to Google Play.
The WiFi-only Memo Pad is expected to become available in the U.S. later this month, and is also expected to reach a number of emerging markets. Asus says that the device is a "tablet-only product", meaning it will not come with any kind of keyboard dock.

Fix White Screen Of Death on iPhone 3GS

Getting white screen of death on your iPhone 3GS? Error 28? Read on.

If you ever tried updating your iPhone 3GS from iOS 4.x.x to iOS 5.1.1 while on 06.15.00 iPad baseband, there is a chance you had to deal with tons of issues when "by accident" selecting the wrong bootroom when creating the custom IPSW.

Selecting the wrong bootroom at the creation of the IPSW and then "force restoring" your 3GS to that firmware creates a trunk load of issues that include:

1. Error 28 - many times used to identify the "connector" issue.
2. White screen of death. Just can't get out of it.
3. Numerous errors in iTunes (when trying to re-restore thinking that that will fix the problem 1, and 2).

The truth of the matter is if you have experienced any of those issues the possibility of restoring to Apple's stuck firmware isn't available ether. Your phone stuck in a limbo mode referred to as "bricked state".

There is a way to get your phone back to life. Don't freak out although it is easy to do at first.

Today I would like to share with you how I was able to get my phone back up and running without any issues.

Originally, my iPhone 3GS was on 4.1. I've decided to upgrade by creating the custom firmware (5.1.1). The tricky part was when I looked at my serial number... according to it, my 3GS was created on the 12th week and was considered as having the "old bootroom". I never bother with checking what bootroom I have with tools like redan0w or others out there. Which is where it all went wrong.

After creating the IPSW, I have successfully restore my device to 5.1.1. It worked for about 15 minutes and then I got a black screen. After "force reset" my phone booted up into the white screen. From there, all hell broke loose. I've started to get errors I never knew existed (< exaggeration, but you get my point) including the hardware failure error 28.

Nothing worked. I had success putting my phone into the pwndDFU with redsn0w, but it simply wouldn't restore.

Here is what I did to make my phone work. I do have to mention this though, the method described below is not an encouragement for you to do this. I am simply sharing what worked for me and am not responsible if you brake your device.

1. Taking the iPhone 3GS apart. Yep, you read it right. The purpose of this was to disconnect the logic board from the battery for about 1 hour.

There are many tutorials on how to take your 3GS apart on YouTube. Please search there. This tutorial is focused on a software fix.

Keep in mind though, disconnecting all the connectors and leaving the logic board screwed to the back case doesn't count. I actually had to completely take it out as there is no way to disconnect logic board from the battery without unscrewing it completely.

I waited for about 1 hour before I started to assemble it back together.

2. While waiting, create a new custom IPSW with the "new bootroom". You can triple check your bootroom (new or old) with redsn0w. Extras > Even more.

Important: I was updating to the 5.1.1 (which is the current iOS version signed by Apple) I didn't stitch the firmware (with redsn0w) as there is no need. In the future, stitching will be required (when apple releases a new update and no longer signs 5.1.1).

Important: Make sure your "hosts" file is not pointing to Cydia. To check if you have it setup properly, visit this page in your browser: http://gs.apple.com. If you get Cydia's page, you need to change a few things in your "hosts" file.

- Navigate to /etc/hosts (Mac, don't know where it is on Windows)
- Open hosts file in TextMate and add "#" in front of any domain ending with .apple.com.
- Save the file. Test the gs.apple.com in your browser. You should get Apple's 404 page.

If you get Apple's 404 (not found) you are good to go.

Advice to those who follow: Don't bother with TinyUmbrella at this point. You don't need it. Starting with the iOS 5, TinyUmbrella is useless unless you want to downgrade to iOS 4.x.x.

3. Assemble the iPhone without braking anything. Now this step is super important. After, refer to step 4 quickly!

4. Connect your 3GS to a mac and launch redsn0w. Go to "Extras" and hit "Pwnd DFU". After about 15 seconds redsn0w will inform you that your device is in pwnd state.

5. Launch iTunes. Again, don't bother with tiny umbrella. It might be the reason for 16xx errors. Press "Shift+Restore" and navigate to your NO_BB_NEWROOM IPWS. This time, you should be able to restore.

When your device is restored, you can relax. Everything went well.

6. At this stage, your device wont be activated. Absinthe jailbreak wont work. You will need to jailbreak with redsn0w. Do so.

7. After the jailbreak process completes, make sure you go back and "boot tethered" from redsn0w because the jailbreak will be tethered (will fix in a minute).

After your device is booted "tethered" open Cydia and install Rocky Racoon. This package will untether your device.

8. If you are a unlocker, install ultrasn0w. Then add this repo: http://repo.iparelhos.com and install 5.1.1 ultrasn0w fixer.

If you get "No Service" still, don't worry. There is a simple fix for that.

If on T-Mobile, make sure to turn off the 3G in Settings > General > Network.

Open redsn0w again and hit "Jailbreak". Yep, re-jailbreak. This time, when you get to the screen where it asks if you want to install Cydia, make sure you have it UNCHECKED and install the iPad baseband CHECKED! This process will simply flush the baseband.

Unfortunately this process will require you to "boot tethered" again and reinstalling Rocky Racoon package (to make your jailbreak untethered).

So there you have it, those are the steps I did and now I have a perfectly functional iPhone 3GS on 5.1.1 with iPad 06.15.00 baseband on T-Mobile.

The Nexus 4 has enough advantages over the iPhone 5 to make long-time iPhone users consider Google’s latest Android phone. The Nexus 4 has several hardware and software features that are simply not found in Apple’s offering.

Google’s Nexus 4 is built by LG and is the first Nexus phone launched with the updated version of Jelly Bean (Android 4.2) baked in. Most mobile users are rightfully concerned with how much gadgets cost, both in terms of upfront costs and long-term costs. The Nexus 4 costs $299 (8GB) to $349 (16GB), but that’s the full unsubsidized price. This means Nexus 4 owners aren’t tied up with two-year contracts. iPhone 5 buyers can get the base model (16GB) for $199, which sounds relatively cheap at first glance, but users have to agree to stick with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon to get that subsidized price. Without a two-year contract, the 16GB iPhone 5 costs $649. Carriers bake the iPhone 5′s $450 subsidy into subscribers’ monthly service contract over time, so it’s not like you’re actually getting a free lunch.

Nexus 4 owners can get some ridiculously cheap service plans without signing up for a two-year contract. One of our favorites is T-Mobile’s $30 pre-paid plan. It’s perfect for people that use their smartphones as little computers more than actually placing calls since it has unlimited data (5GB at 4G speeds) and unlimited messaging, but just 100 minutes. Extra minutes are 10 cents each, but you’d have to spend an awful lot of time talking with friends to make it more expensive than AT&T’s cheapest iPhone 5-compatible plan with similar features. The $199 iPhone 5 will cost individual users $109.99 per month with 450 minutes, 5GB of 4G data and unlimited messaging.

If you’re in Germany, but need to call London you’re out of luck. With international SIM cards you generally have to pay more to call out of whatever country you’re in, but at least it’s doable. The Verizon and Sprint iPhone 5 can be used with international SIM cards when traveling, but they are locked to either Sprint or Verizon while in the U.S.

The iPhone 5′s Maps are good enough for some tasks, lulling users into relying on the app until it throws a serious wrench into their plans by guiding them to the incorrect destination or worse. Apple’s maps app simply can’t accurately find emergency rooms, which is important for obvious reasons. Apple’s improved the specific search for emergency rooms since we first wrote about the issue, but the results are still muddled with non-emergency businesses, such as private doctor offices and pharmacies.

iPhone 5 Maps:Suggest Bank 3,000 Miles Away

Perhaps an emergency room search isn’t in your immediate future? Apple’s Maps still struggles with basic searches, producing inexplicable errors. For example, after going to the dentist yesterday in Pacifica, a town about 10 miles south of San Francisco, I needed to deposit a check and get some cash. I searched for a Bank of America branch on my iPhone and the maps app suggested I go to Broadway and 72nd, a couple of blocks west of Central Park (yes, that park in the middle of Manhattan), which is only about 2,950 miles away from Pacifica. I haven’t been to New York for five months and my iPhone 5′s never been there. I most recently searched for a San Francisco business with the Maps app. Instead of running another search I asked my dentist’s office assistant for help and she directed me to a Bank of America branch a few hundred feet away.

5) Nexus 4 Wireless Charging and NFC

The Google Nexus 4 features Near Field Communication (NFC) and can charge wirelessly, while the iPhone 5 has neither. Both of these features are a little premature, but they are requisites for power users looking for the latest and greatest mobile tech.

The Nexus 4′s NFC Feature Allows for Mobile Payments

NFC allows the Nexus 4 to communicate with other phones and other objects, such as payment terminals at stores. The Nexus 4 can run Google Wallet, an app that allows users to checkout with their phones and have the charge passed on to any credit card or debit card.

The iPhone 5 can be used to pay for some items, but it relies on barcodes generated through apps and Passbook.

Google and LG built in wireless charging, which means Nexus 4 users don’t have to fiddle with charging cables. The technology’s nowhere to be found in Apple land.

The Nexus 4′s wireless charging feature is based on the Qi standard. This means it’s compatible with any Qi-enabled wireless charging station, including Google’s own charging Orb. Unfortunately, the Orb still isn’t available for purchase quite yet.

We expect wireless charging surfaces to become much more prevalent in the coming years, making it easier to keep the Nexus 4 juiced up. Of course you can charge the Nexus 4 the old-fashioned way with any micro USB cable. The iPhone 5 has the new-fangled Lightning connector, forgoing the traditional 30-pin iPod/iPhone adapter, making it difficult to keep the latest iPhone juiced up unless you carry around your own charging cable or adapter.

6) Google Services

The Nexus 4 has an unfair advantage over the iPhone 5 competing for users that rely heavily on GMail or use Google’s Apps for Business.The Nexus 4 runs all of Google’s mobile apps beautifully, including Gmail, YouTube, Google+ and Talk. Since the phone’s already tied into users’ Google accounts, all of Google’s services just work out of the box.

While Google generally makes its apps available for iOS, Apple doesn’t integrate them into the core experience. For example, YouTube used to ship with every iPhone, but the app now must be manually installed. You can download Chrome on the iPhone 5, but users can’t make it their default browser. Apple, of course, would rather have its customers use its own apps and services rather than Google’s.

Google Now is another service that shines on the Nexus 4. It’s not perfect, but it’s much more multidimensional that Apple’s Siri. Google Now predicts what information users need and presents it proactively rather than waiting for users to ask for it.

7) More Options in Nexus 4 Camera app

The Nexus 4′s camera app offers a lot more control than the iPhone 5′s stock camera app. The Nexus 4 allows users to quickly make adjustments with a single tap on the display. Users can quickly switch to the front-facing camera, turn on HDR mode, adjust the flash settings, adjust exposure compensation, correct white balance and go to advanced settings using a single gesture.

While the iPhone 5 camera app has panorama mode, the Nexus 4 allows users to capture 360-degree Photo Spheres. There are tons of iPhone 5 compatible apps that match or exceed the Nexus 4 camera app’s capabilities, but it’s a nice treat to have these features ready to go in the phone’s native camera app.

Huawei Blames 'Lack of Innovation' on Loss of Steve Jobs

During the Consumer Electronics Show, Huawei consumer CEO Richard Yu blamed the supposed "lack of innovation" in the technology market due to the death of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

"Steve Jobs is gone. Now there is a lack of innovation," he said. Jobs was seen by many as one of the few worthy of being a visionary, with the late Apple co-founder helping the firm become the most valuable company on the planet via the launches of the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Yu also criticized South Korean technology giant Samsung, stating that it doesn't utilize high-end materials: "their plastic is cheap".

He then referred to why Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei is the best company in terms of design for two reasons. One being it mixes Asian and European design and the other being it has spirit. "We're a globalized company, so that's why we can do better. And behind all that, we have our spirit. It's very important."

"In the past people understood that the best products came from Apple or Samsung. We want to change this so that people understand that the best products come from Huawei. That's my target."

Due to the firm's history of building lower-end handsets, Yu acknowledged that it'll take time for U.S. carriers to accept its high-end devices. Huawei announced the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate phablet during CES, which it claims to have the world's largest phone screen, as well as the world's most powerful smartphone in the form of the Ascend D2. It also announced its first Windows Phone with the W1.

Responding to comments regarding the sheer size of the Ascend Mate smartphone, as echoed in our hands-on CES 2013 preview, Yu stressed that the device was "more comfortable than the Galaxy Note" due to its design, as well as one-handed mode available for the device's keyboard.

Apple has released an iOS update that prevents developers from changing app screenshots as often as they'd like on their App Store listings.
The move, which is necessary to combat fake app scammers, won't allow developers from switching screenshots unless there's a legitimate software update that accompanies them.

App Store scammers have been successful in tricking users into downloading fraudulent apps by making them appear they are variants of popular apps through utilizing the real app's screenshots.

"Beginning January 9, app screenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect once your app has been approved," Apple said. "New screenshots may be uploaded when you submit a binary for an update to an existing app or a new app."

DELL LAUNCHES $499 WINDOWS 8 TABLET

U.S. PC manufacturer Dell has launched a $499 Windows 8 tablet in the form of the Latitude 10.

Dell claims the device is the "first full-featured, enterprise-ready Windows 8 tablet experience at a price below $500." It runs on a 32-bit Windows 8 version and is powered by a dual-core Intel Atom 1.8GHz Z2760 processor.

Its 10.1-inch IPS (1,366x768) LCD boasts Corning Gorilla Glass technology, as well as capacitive 10 Finger Touch support. 2 GB of SDRAM and 32 GB of solid-state storage are also included.

Dell pointed out that the Latitude 10 "does not require new mobile device management or software licensing, supports new and legacy Windows applications, is compatible with Adobe Flash and connects with existing peripherals."

During CES 2013, Dell unveiled an upgraded model for its XPS 13 ultrabook, which will launch later this month.
